YETI IN THE UNDERGROUND… AND A PLAGUE IN NEW YORK! SPECIAL EDITION
Candy Jar Books is pleased to announce a special edition version of Times Squared featuring a brand new story by Rick Cross and updated cover by Martin Baines.
The story features the return of the Great Intelligence, and its foot soldiers the Yeti, but this time the action moves to the USA, with the Yeti overtaking the New York City Subway.
The Great Intelligence and the Yeti first appeared in the 1968 Doctor Who serial, The Abominable Snowmen, written by Mervyn Haisman & Henry Lincoln. It was such a success that the two authors were quickly commissioned to write a sequel, and in 1969 both the Intelligence and the Yeti returned for The Web of Fear, a story which also introduced Lethbridge-Stewart himself!
It was many long years before the Great Intelligence returned to Doctor Who; Christmas 2012. Two more appearances followed in 2013. This trilogy of stories (The Snowmen, The Bells of St John and The Name of the Doctor) was penned by Steven Moffat and introduced viewers to a future version of the Intelligence.
Shaun Russell, head of publishing at Candy Jar Books, says:
“Times Squared is one of our most popular Lethbridge-Stewart books and has been out of print for a while now. We’ve had many emails requesting a new print and, for a while we made it available via Amazon’s POD service, but now it is time to give this wonderful book a new burst of energy.”
Times Squared takes place some eight months after The Web of Fear, transferring the Yeti from the London Underground to the New York City Subway. On bringing back the Yeti, Rick says: “I had this brilliant idea about the rats in the sewers of New York, and their connection to various plagues throughout the years. What if one such plague was the result of the Intelligence? And in these days of COVID-19, this story is more pertinent than ever. ”
Cover art is provided by Martin Baines, whose Lethbridge-Stewart artwork includes Downtime: Child of the New Earth, the Lethbridge-Stewart Colouring Book, and the upcoming Kiss of the Ice Maiden. Martin was really thrilled to revisit the artwork, and says:
“Times Squared was my first cover for the Lethbridge-Stewart range. With Yeti robots covered in rats coming out of the New York underground, I couldn’t believe my luck. When Shaun asked me to revisit the artwork for this new format, I jumped at the chance. The changes are subtle, but I truly believe that the final version is much better than the original.”
Blurb:
When Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, his fiancée Sally Wright, and nephew Owain Vine, embark on a much-needed holiday to New York City, the last thing they expect to find is a puzzling mystery involving coma patients, a stranger from a distant land and a dark menace lurking in the bowels of the city’s labyrinthine subway system.
Before long, they’re battling an ancient evil pursuing a deadly campaign of terror that could bring Manhattan under its control… and the world to its knees.
