First Look at Ncuti Gatwa with Varada Sethu and Millie Gibson ahead of Series 15

Like many Doctors who have come before him, one is not enough for the Fifteenth Doctor and in season two, he will have two companions by his side as Varada Sethu steps aboard the TARDIS.

Varada joins the Whoniverse from a galaxy far, far away after starring in the Disney+ Star Wars series Andor. Now she straps in for another journey through time and space alongside Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor and Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday.

Sethu says:

“I feel like the luckiest person in the world. It is such an honour to be a part of the Whoniverse, and I’m so grateful to the whole Doctor Who family – because that is what they are – for welcoming me with open arms and making me feel so at home. I couldn’t ask for a better team than Ncuti and Millie to be on this adventure with, this is SO much fun!”

Showrunner, executive producer and writer Russell T Davies says:

“I first worked with Varada on a BBC production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and it’s a joy to welcome her on board the TARDIS. Right now in the studio, shooting for 2025, we’ve got Ncuti, Millie and Varada fighting side by side – we need all three, because the stakes are higher than ever!”

Sethu is best known for her standout role as Cinta Kaz in the Disney+ Original series Andor. Her additional credits include Jurassic World Dominion, Annika and Strike Back.

Currently in production Doctor Who series 15 is set to debut in 2025 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK and Disney+ in the U.S. and around the world (where available).

Filming begins on Doctor Who season 14.

Filming has officially begun on Ncuti Gatwa’s first full season of Doctor Who, with the news being announced across the sci-fi series’s social channels.

The posts featured the first clapperboard for the new season, which noted that filming began on 5th December 2022 and that the season’s first director would be Dylan Holmes Williams, known for his previous work on M Night Shyamalan’s Apple TV+ series Servant.

While we know that Gatwa has already filmed some scenes for the show, expected to air as part of the 60th anniversary specials next year, this will be his Fifteenth Doctor’s first full season.

It will follow both the departure of Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor earlier this year in The Power of the Doctor, and David Tennant’s return to the TARDIS as the new Fourteenth Doctor.

Meanwhile, season 14 will also be the first to feature Millie Gibson’s new companion character Ruby Sunday, as was first announced during this year’s Children in Need appeal night in November.

Gibson posted to her social accounts a picture of flowers with a card featuring the now commonly used sequence of emojis, this time including two hearts and a diamond.

She captioned the post with: “First day… officially a Cardiff resident ;)”.

Meanwhile, returning showrunner Russell T Davies also posted his reaction to the start of filming on his Instagram, saying: “FILMING BEGINS on the next season! So many mysteries to come. Who is the X? What is the Y? And what the hell is the spinning Z?!? You’ll find out! On BBC One, BBC iPlayer and Disney+”.

The 14th season will be the first to stream internationally exclusively on Disney Plus, after a deal was made between the platform and the BBC earlier this year.

Millie Gibson has landed the role of Ruby Sunday, the Doctor’s new companion. Starring alongside Ncuti Gatwa, Millie will make her debut over the festive season in 2023 when the Fifteenth Doctor takes control of the TARDIS. Recently, it was announced that the BBC and Disney Branded Television have joined forces to make Disney+ the new global home, outside of the UK and Ireland, for future seasons of Doctor Who.

Best known for her role as Coronation Street’s Kellie Neelan, 18 year old Millie was the recipient of the Best Young Performer Award at The British Soap Awards earlier this year. Millie has also appeared in dramas Butterfly (ITV) and Love, Lies and Records (BBC).

Speaking of her new role, Millie Gibson says:

“Whilst still being in total disbelief, I am beyond honoured to be cast as the Doctor’s companion. It is a gift of a role, and a dream come true, and I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have travelled in before me. And what better way to do that than being by the fabulous Ncuti Gatwa’s side, I just can’t wait to get started.”

Ncuti Gatwa adds:

“Millie just is the companion. She is full of talent, strength, she has a cheeky sparkle in her eye and is sharp as a razor. From the moment she walked into the room she captured all of our attention with her effervescence and then solidified that attention with the sheer torque of her talent. This adventure is going to be so wild and so fun, I cannot WAIT to sail the universe with Millie!”

Russell T Davies, Showrunner, says:

“It’s the great honour of my job to find the next generation of talent, and Millie shines like a star already. She’s brilliant, dynamic, clever and a wonderful actor. As a Coronation Street fan, I’ve seen Millie survive chases, guns and sieges, but that’s nothing compared to what lies ahead for Ruby Sunday.”
