Speaking to io9, showrunner Russell T Davies confirmed that a new documentary will look back on the making of Doctor Who‘s return–and why it’s happening a little later than you might expect.

Last week, Doctor Who marked a major milestone—the 20th anniversary of the airing of “Rose”, the landmark episode that brought the show back to TV after 16 years in hiatus, kicking off a whole new era. But it did so in a relatively quiet manner compared to Who‘s usual recent grand anniversary overtures. But it turns out there’s a reason for that—and that soon enough, it’ll be rectified.

Speaking to io9 over Zoom ahead of the series’ latest return in a few weeks, showrunner Russell T Davies exclusively confirmed there are plans for an hour-long episode of Doctor Who Unleashed, the series’ behind-the-scenes companion show, that will explore and celebrate the making of Doctor Who‘s revival era. It will air in the coming months on the BBC iPlayer in the UK, and worldwide on Doctor Who‘s YouTube channel.

The reason it didn’t arrive timed to the anniversary of “Rose”? Well, in part, Davies himself.

“To be honest, [the anniversary wasn’t on my mind]. I’m very much aware how on Disney+ worldwide, going to some territories that have never had Doctor Who before,” Davies told io9 as he reflected on the latest season of the show airing so close to the 20th anniversary of “Rose”. “There are some people watching this to who Ncuti is the Doctor—the number one, their Doctor, and so you’ve got to bear that in mind. That’s always been the case, for many years, to look for that new audience. So I actually thought it’d be a bit backward, be a bit heavy handed to [acknowledge]… and now we’re here and I’m kind of slightly kicking myself, because everyone seems to be full of joy about it!”

Seeing that joy in the build up to the anniversary ultimately spurred Davies into realizing the series should also celebrate in some way too, and chose to do so with the new documentary. “It’s coming out late, because I was the one saying ‘let’s not do anything!’,” Davies laughed. “And then quite late in the day I changed my mind! ‘Everyone’s talking about it, let’s do something!’. So we are.”

Over the years, I meet so many people who were inspired to find careers in TV, because of the behind-the-scenes material the BBC would show. And now it’s back, in the grand old tradition of Doctor Who Confidential, but in a brand new form, Unleashed! So a whole new generation – and faithful fans of old – can see what the stars and the crew get up to behind the cameras.

The reported show will begin with the 60th anniversary special and the surprise return of David Tennant and Catherine Tate.

Returning Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has commissioned a special behind-the-scenes series ahead of the next season with new Doctor Ncuti Gatwa, according to reports.

The BBC Three Doctor Who spin-off series will be titled Doctor Who: Unleashed and give fans a sneak-peek at the filming process, beginning with the 60th anniversary special next year and the surprise return of David Tennant and Catherine Tate, according to The Mirror.

The series will apparently be similar in format to Doctor Who Confidential, the behind-the-scenes sister show that ran from 2005 to 2012. It will reportedly continue to air alongside the next full season.

A source told the publication that Davies is “aware that Doctor Who fans can never get enough content” and that he thought “the time was right to bring back a behind-the-scenes show which will document their comebacks and show how the special was made”.

Speaking earlier this year ahead of the broadcast return of BBC Three, the channel’s controller Fiona Campbell teased “potentially very exciting things under discussion” when asked whether former shows such as Doctor Who Confidential could make a return.

“But we’re in this new world, we’ve just come out of COVID and everybody’s schedules are being reassessed so it changes all the time,” she added. “It’s very exciting but it does change – it’s very fast-moving at the minute.”
