Equity Calls On Government Regulator To Punish Mad Dog Casting After Agency Collapsed Owing Creditors $2M

Equity Calls On Government Regulator To Punish Mad Dog Casting After Agency Collapsed Owing Creditors $2M

Doctor Who

It is being reported by Deadline.com that British actors union Equity has written to a government regulator urging it to take action against Mad Dog 2020 Casting, a 25-year-old UK agency that collapsed last month owing creditors more than £1.5 million ($1.9 million).

Paul W. Fleming called on Ben Bruten, boss of the Employment Agencies Standards Inspectorate, to exercise its powers against Mad Dog, which includes fines, prosecutions, and the ability to ban individuals from running agencies in the future. Mad Dog’s parent company, Cinextra Limited, lists directors including CEO Graham Beswick.

“Equity would like to ask … how the EASI intends to use its powers to ensure that the individuals behind Mad Dog are held accountable for systematic breaches of their statutory obligations and treatment of artists, and so that they cannot continue their behaviour,” Fleming said.

Deadline chronicled the issues at Mad Dog last year, with clients complaining that they were owed thousands by the agency that supplied background actors to productions including Call the Midwife and Doctor Who. Mad Dog continued to trade despite failing to observe multiple county court judgments in favour of supporting artists owed money.

Fleming told Deadline that the company’s collapse had been “horrendous” for Equity members, adding that the “scale [of damage] is extraordinary for people with precarious incomes.” He acknowledged that it was unlikely that actors would be paid money they are owed, but said this will not stop Equity fighting for justice. “If we can’t get a pound in cash, we can get a pound in flesh,” he added.

Mad Dog filed for liquidation in February. MHA, the accountancy company, is overseeing the process and has called a meeting of creditors on Friday morning. A statement of Mad Dog’s affairs, seen by Deadline, shows the agency owes £1.66M ($2.1M) to creditors, including £1.3M to trade and expense creditors and £67,400 to employees. MHA said there was a “large number of creditors.”

A spokesperson for the Department for Business and Trade, which oversees the EASI, said: “We take all relevant complaints about agencies seriously and ensure they are thoroughly investigated.” The spokesperson declined to comment on the EASI’s industry-wide investigation into agencies in the entertainment space.

Last year, Mad Dog apologized to clients and stressed that it was committed to clearing its backlog of payments. The agency blamed the twin U.S. writer and actors strikes for its financial issues. Under UK regulations, it is unlawful for an agency to withhold payment from clients for more than 10 days after receiving funds from a producer, broadcaster or streamer.

EXTERMINATE! REGENERATE! The Story of Doctor Who by John Higgs

Bath Literature Festival presents this exclusive Bath pre-publication event with leading cultural commentator John Higgs about his first biography of the infamous Time Lord from Doctor Who.

On screen, Doctor Who is a story of monsters, imagination and mind-expanding adventure. But the off-screen story is equally extraordinary – a tale of failed monks, war heroes, 1960s polyamory and self-sabotaging broadcasting executives.

From the politics of fandom to the inner struggles of the BBC, thousands of people have given part of themselves – and sometimes, too much of themselves – to bring this unlikeliest of folk heroes to life.

This is a story of change, mystery and the importance of imaginary characters in our lives. able to evolve and adapt more radically than any other fiction, Doctor Who has acted as a mirror to more than six decades of social, technological and cultural change while always remaining a central fixture of the British imagination.

In Exterminate / Regenerate, John Higgs invites us into his TARDIS on a journey to discover how ideas emerge and survive despite the odds, why we are so addicted to fiction, and why this wonderful wandering time traveller means so much to so many.

John Higgs is the author of I Have America Surrounded, The Klf, Stranger Than We Can Imagine and Watling Street to name a few.

Doctor Who Headlines BBC Annual Report 2023/24

Doctor Who Headlines BBC Annual Report 2023/24

The BBC’s annual report has praised the impact of Doctor Who – as ratings for the recently concluded season 14 continue to grow on BBC iPlayer.

The beloved sci-fi series was mentioned several times throughout the report, which spotlighted it as one of the shows driving the corporation’s “huge audiences”, while also mentioning its “economic impact” in Wales and across the UK.

Meanwhile, there was also a mention of the Whoniverse, which launched towards the end of last year to create a “dedicated home for all shows within the orbit of Doctor Who”, including hundreds of episodes from the classic and modern eras.

The report spoke of Doctor Who’s “explosive return” to TV for its latest run, explaining that the BBC and Disney had come “together to transform Doctor Who into a global franchise for UK audiences and the rest of the world”.

The 60th anniversary specials were also mentioned as one of the year’s “content highlights” alongside Eurovision coverage and the third season of Planet Earth.

The latest figures for the new season, as reported by The Times, now make it the highest-rated drama for young viewers (under 35s) across the BBC this year.

Overnight ratings for the season had been lower than is typically the case due to the show’s new release strategy – which saw each episode debut on BBC iPlayer at midnight on Fridays, several hours before the BBC One broadcast on Saturday evening.

But a spokesperson for the show explained that this had always been the expectation, saying: “Overnight ratings no longer provide an accurate picture of all those who watch drama in an on-demand world.

“This season of Doctor Who premiered on iPlayer nearly 24 hours before broadcast, and episode 1 has already been viewed by nearly 6 million viewers and continues to grow.”

DOCTOR WHO LANDS THE TARDIS AT MADAME TUSSAUDS LONDON THIS SUMMER

DOCTOR WHO LANDS THE TARDIS AT MADAME TUSSAUDS LONDON THIS SUMMER

The Fifteenth Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, will join Madame Tussauds London’s out-of-this-world line-up this summer.

The hit show’s highly anticipated new season lands on UK screens on the 11th May. Ahead of this, the Baker Street attraction has released behind-the-scenes imagery of Ncuti Gatwa working closely with its highly skilled artists to capture his perfect likeness for the upcoming figure of the Fifteenth Doctor.

Ncuti Gatwa took over the TARDIS in the 2023 Christmas special, The Church on Ruby Road. The BAFTA-nominated actor, known for playing Eric Effiong in Netflix’s Sex Education and one of the Kens in last summer’s Barbie, has been hailed as the Doctor for a new generation.

Ncuti Gatwa says:

“I’m very excited to be joining the iconic lineup at Madame Tussauds London. The process was amazing to witness, I can’t wait to see the final result.”

While details about the new Doctor Who figure remain under wraps as Madame Tussauds London’s expert artists work their magic, the world-famous attraction has confirmed the figure will appear within a specially created Whoniverse-themed set. Due to be unveiled this July after the final episode of the new series, fans will be able to continue their adventures through time and space and meet the Fifteenth Doctor alongside the famous TARDIS.

Steve Blackburn, General Manager at Madame Tussauds London said:

“Doctor Who has been loved by millions around the globe for over 60 years. We all have our favourite Doctor and we’re beyond thrilled to see Ncuti Gatwa bring this next chapter to a new generation, and his star power to Madame Tussauds London. We can’t wait for Whovians – old and new – to get up close and ‘meet’ the Time Lord in his latest form.”

Jeff Parker, Creative Producer, BBC Studios, added:

“It’s great to once again be working alongside the fantastic magic makers at Madame Tussauds London. It feels fitting that the longest-running sci-fi show in the world should have a place at one of London’s oldest and most iconic visitor attractions where we can be sure to give our global fanbase a chance to get up close to the Doctor. I can’t wait to see guest reactions when the installation is revealed.”

Madame Tussauds London has a rich history with Doctor Who, from appearing in series seven’s Spearhead from Space serial in 1970 to creating figures of the Doctor, beginning with the Fourth Doctor, played by Tom Baker, in 1980. This upcoming figure of the Fifteenth Doctor is the first to be announced for the attraction’s brand-new film and TV-themed zone, which will feature fellow screen icons such as James Bond and E.T. when it opens this summer.

Doctor Who season one premieres at midnight on 11th May in the UK on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Outside of the UK Doctor Who begins streaming 10th May at 7pm ET on Disney+ where available.

Part-missing adventure ‘The Celestial Toymaker’ to be completed with new animation

Part-missing adventure ‘The Celestial Toymaker’ to be completed with new animation

The Celestial Toymaker

THE CELESTIAL TOYMAKER will be returning as an animation and will be released on DVD and Blu-ray, coming soon.

The two-disc set contains the third season story as well as special features. This classic series stars the First Doctor, William Hartnell and companions Peter Purves as Steven Taylor and Jackie Lane as Dodo Chaplet, with Michael Gough as the Toymaker.

Fans of Doctor Who have long lamented the loss of the original 1966 master recordings of all except one of THE CELESTIAL TOYMAKER. BBC Studios have carefully created an animated presentation of this lost classic story using off-air audio recordings of the missing three episodes.

The Celestial Toymaker sees the Doctor and companions separated when they come up against the Toymaker. While the Doctor plays the Trilogic Game, Steven and Dodo are forced to play seemingly childish but ultimately dangerous games with the aim of being reunited and getting back to the TARDIS.

All episodes have been animated in both colour and black and white and include original film elements which have been fully restored.

Special features include:

Disc One

  • Episodes 1-4 – Animation – Black and White
  • Episodes 1-3 – Reconstruction
  • Episode 4 – Original 1966 Episode newly restored
  • New Audio Commentaries

Disc Two

  • Episodes 1-4 – Animation – Colour
  • Making The Animation
  • Doctor Who Escape Room – Team First Doctor
  • Sylvester McCoy Introduction for episode 4 as per the original VHS release
  • Photo Gallery
  • PDF Material including camera scripts
