The Ninth Doctor and Rose Tyler return for a new series of audio adventures

The Ninth Doctor and Rose Tyler return for a new series of audio adventures

The Ninth Doctor and Rose

Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper star in a brand-new series of full-cast audio dramas, beginning in August 2025 from Big Finish Productions.

In 2005, Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper, as the Ninth Doctor and Rose Tyler respectively, took a whole new generation of Doctor Who fans on the trip of a lifetime into time and space.

Twenty years later, the trip continues, as they’re set to star in a brand-new series of twelve, hour-long, full-cast audio adventures, due to be released from August 2025.

Christopher Eccleston said:

“I am so happy to be back recording more adventures for the Ninth Doctor with Billie. I don’t think my Doctor exists without Rose. He’s a ‘one man, one companion’ kind of alien. We’ve explored him on his own at Big Finish, as a loner. But there’s a resilience and a bravery and a deep empathy to Billie as Rose, that’s why I do this. They complete each other.”

Billie Piper added:

“I can’t think of a better time for Rose to reunite with her first Doctor than now. Twenty years after she first ran into the TARDIS and towards adventure, here we are again, me and Chris, ready to have fun facing the universe – and the monsters – together.”

Producer Matt Fitton said:

“Twenty years after the Ninth Doctor and Rose burst onto our screens, Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper are back with that brilliant dynamic – the Doctor showing Rose the universe, and Rose showing him the best of humanity.

“Across twelve episodes, slotting neatly into that 2005 series, we have more Jackie Tyler, more Powell Estate, plus friends and enemies old and new through time and space. Our writers have done an amazing job recapturing the spirit of that very special season, and Chris and Billie have embraced these scripts with delight and gusto. They’re having a blast, back on that trip of a lifetime – and they sound fantastic!”

You can now pre-order Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures on CD + download (or download only) exclusively from bigfinish.com.

Genesis of the Cybermen

Genesis of the Cybermen

A lost Cybermen story for the Fifth Doctor
Genesis of the Cybermen, due for release in March 2025.

Big Finish’s acclaimed range Doctor Who – The Lost Stories takes ideas proposed during the classic era of the TV show and adapts them into full-cast audio dramas. The next release in the range reveals the origins of one of the Doctor’s greatest enemies – the Genesis of the Cybermen

This story comes from the mind of one of the Cybermen’s original creators – Gerry Davis, the writer who, with Kit Pedler, first devised the Mondasian monsters and went on to write several of their TV stories.

The intended origins of the Cybermen never made it to screen; Davis pitched a story about their creation in the early 1980s, but it was rejected by producer John Nathan-Turner. Doctor Who fans may remember details of this adventure being printed in the 1988 book Cybermen by David Banks.

Now, the story has been adapted by David K Barnes into a full-cast audio drama. The Lost Stories: Genesis of the Cybermen stars Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, alongside Janet FieldingSarah Sutton, and Matthew Waterhouse as his companions Tegan, Nyssa, and Adric, with Nicholas Briggs as the Cybermen.

Doctor Who – The Lost Stories: Genesis of the Cybermen is now available to pre-order as a collector’s edition 2-disc CD (+ download for just £16.99) or download only (for just £13.99)

A King lies dying in his castle. His eldest son Prince Sylvan is an artist with no desire to inherit a kingdom, while Prince Dega toils in his laboratory, dedicated to saving their dying people from extinction. They will all burn unless he succeeds.

When the TARDIS arrives, its crew believe they can help. But this planet is Mondas. And this is the Genesis of the Cybermen…

Producer and director David O’Mahony said:

“The Cybermen have been one of the Doctor’s greatest opponents throughout the ages. They are brutal, uncaring and dedicatedly vicious.

“Gerry Davis’s ideas about their origin never made it onto TV, so it’s a total pleasure to bring this story to life with Peter Davison’s Doctor. Setting it pre-Earthshock gives it the feel of a brilliant prequel to the impending Cybermen stories that we know and love.”

Big Finish listeners can save money by pre-ordering Doctor Who – The Lost Stories: Genesis of the Cybermen together with 2025’s second Doctor Who – The Lost Stories adventure (title TBA, due for release in September 2025), in a multi-buy bundle on collector’s edition CD (+ download for just £32) or download only (for just £26).

All the above prices include the special pre-order discount and are subject to change after general release.

Please note: the collector’s edition double CDs are strictly limited to 2,000 copies and will not be repressed.

Please note that Big Finish is currently operating a digital-first release schedule. The mail-out of collector’s edition CDs may be delayed due to factors beyond our control, but all purchases of this release unlock a digital copy that can be immediately downloaded or played on the Big Finish app from the release date.

Doctor Who spin-off with Inside No. 9 star announced by Big Finish

Doctor Who spin-off with Inside No. 9 star announced by Big Finish

Reece Shearsmith.
Reece Shearsmith – Big Finish.

Another Doctor Who audio drama is coming our way, and this time around it’s welcoming a TV legend into its mix.

That’s right, it’s been confirmed that The League of Gentlemen and Inside No. 9 star Reece Shearsmith will be making his Big Finish debut in brand new audio series Planet Krynoid.

Of course, this is not Shearsmith’s first foray into the Whoniverse as the actor and writer has previously starred in season 9 episode Sleep No More as Gagan Rassmussen.

The episode saw Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor and Jenna Coleman’s Clara Oswald take on Shearsmith’s character, who was a space station crew member left orbiting Neptune in the 38th century.

Now, Shearsmith will be starring in this new audio series, which will also feature a classic Doctor Who body horror monster – the eponymous man-absorbing alien plant creature that was first seen on our screens in the 1976 Tom Baker story The Seeds of Doom.

In the new adventure, Shearsmith will play Robert Hodan, the governor of Sunlight, “a paradise planet infested by the Krynoid”, according to the synopsis. It continues:

“When two seed pods are discovered lodged in a satellite, things swiftly go from bad to worse…”

On the announcement of his role in the series, Shearsmith said:

“I know a lot of actors on Big Finish’s roster – David Warner was a great friend, and he used to love doing them and would tell me about them: ‘Why haven’t you done one?’

“So I was thrilled to be asked to be in this. It’s a really huge drama, it feels a proper disaster movie of the 1970s, like The Poseidon Adventure – things just get worse and worse.”

As well as Shearsmith’s governor, the characters for the new audio series include xenobiologist Bryn Forrester (Melody Chikakane Brown) and the impoverished Hart family comprised of Sarah Whitehouse, Ian Conningham, and Nye Occomore.

And there’s also a special appearance in the second episode of the series, with Paul McGann (aka the Eighth Doctor) set to be included. The series will be made up of three episodes: Sunlight by Jonathan Morris, Sunset by Jonathan S Powell and Darkness by Chris Chapman.

On the announcement of the series, producer Jonathan S Powell said:

“Planet Krynoid is Doctor Who’s answer to The Last of Us and The Walking Dead, a heart-stopping vision of society’s collapse under the weight of one of television’s most terrifying creations: the Krynoid.

“The Krynoids themselves are terrifying because they do that great sci-fi thing of inverting the ordinary and making you petrified of pot plants. More than that though, they’re a sentient infection utterly antithetical to our existence, for which we are woefully unprepared, which makes them the perfect monster to explore today, half a century on from their debut.

“I adore The Seeds of Doom – not just for its B-movie brilliance, but for the creeping feeling it evokes that this time, for the first time, the Doctor really might lose. That’s what we’ve tried to convey in this set, that the gloves are off and nobody is safe.”

The Worlds of Doctor Who – Planet Krynoid: Nightfall is now available to pre-order at BigFinish.com and the box set is due for release in April 2025.

New audio adventures await the Fugitive Doctor in 2025

New audio adventures await the Fugitive Doctor in 2025

Doctor Who: Most Wanted

Jo Martin and Alice Krige star in a brand-new box set of full-cast audio drama due to be released in January 2025, as the long-awaited Fugitive Doctor lands at Big Finish Productions.

The Fugitive Doctor, played by Jo Martin, is the mysterious incarnation from the Doctor’s past first seen in 2020 TV episode Fugitive of the Judoon. Having worked as an agent for the secretive Division, she’s now on the run from her Time Lord employers in THE FUGITIVE DOCTOR: MOST WANTED.

In three exciting audio adventures, Martin’s determined Doctor encounters ruthless bounty hunters, a mythical Russian witch, and even the Daleks (Nicholas Briggs). All the while, she must evade the hot pursuit of Time Lord agent Cosmo, voiced by Alice Krige (best known for her role as the Borg Queen in the Star Trek franchise).

Jo Martin said:

“Doing these audios has been super fun! There wasn’t enough time in the TV episodes to see all the different sides of the Fugitive Doctor. She’s gung-ho, but there’s a softer side to her. With these episodes, the listeners will hear her vulnerability, her kindness and her loyalties. She’s a lone wolf, and that can’t be easy.”

The three episodes in this box set are:

FAST TIMES (by Robert Valentine)

When the mysterious Division tries to arrest their equally mysterious agent, the Doctor, she evades capture and heads out in search of answers… but trouble is never far behind.

Captured by bounty hunters and imprisoned in a maximum-security hulk ship, the Doctor is about to learn that there’s no time to stand still when you’re a fugitive. And times are about to get very fast indeed.

THE LEGEND OF BABA YAGA by Rochana Patel

On the run from the Time Lords and in serious need of help, the Doctor heads for 17th century Russia in search of the legendary witch of Slavic folklore… Baba Yaga.

But while trying to gain assistance from this powerful entity, the Doctor finds herself embroiled in events from the most famous of Baba Yaga’s tales when the tries to help a beautiful young woman called Vasilisa retrieve a burning ember to save her family from the bitter Russian winter.

What is real? What is fantasy? And will the Doctor be able to tell the difference in time?

THE DIMENSION OF LOST THINGS by Lisa McMullin

Fleeing Cosmo through the Vortex, the TARDIS gets sucked down a temporal plughole, and the Doctor emerges into a weird landscape. Finding other lost souls in the form of mountaineer George Mallory and scavenger Athelia, the Doctor soon stumbles across another, more surprising denizen of this strange dimension – herself!

With Cosmo still in pursuit and memory-stealing winds threatening to wipe her mind for good, the Doctor senses a complex trap in action. But whose trap is it, and how can she possibly escape?

Producer David Richardson said:

“This was an absolute treat to work on. The Fugitive Doctor is such a brilliant, head-turning twist in this amazing long-running show we all love, and script editor Robert Valentine and I had such fun making plans.

“Thirteenth Doctor showrunner, Chris Chibnall, very generously gave up his time and met with us on Zoom while we threw around ideas and he gave us some clarifications about this most enigmatic era of Doctor Who. We came out of that meeting elated, full of purpose and sure of our direction.

“Chris told us that Jo was fantastic and a gorgeous person to work with, and he was absolutely right of course – she came into the studio full of joy for the part, always smiling, always brilliant and charismatic. The Fugitive Doctor now has her own audio series – and as the saying goes, it’s about time…”

Matthew Jacobs returns to the world of the Eighth Doctor

Matthew Jacobs returns to the world of the Eighth Doctor

Matthew Jacobs returns to the world of the Eighth Doctor

Paul McGann stars in the forthcoming full-cast audio drama box set, Deadly Strangers, which includes a story by the writer of his very first adventure, the 1996 Doctor Who TV movie.

The Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) and his companions Charley Pollard (India Fisher) and Lady Audacity Montague (Jaye Griffiths) have three brand-new audio adventures in store in The Eighth Doctor Adventures: Deadly Strangers, due for release in December 2024.

The Doctor, Audacity and Charley visit many times and places, always with the best of intentions. But others have a different agenda.

An alien princess takes an interest in Puccini, a visitor to Iceland causes chaos, and a lethal interloper slips into the dreams of a sleeping population. Some strangers have deadly intent…

The first of the three stories, Puccini and the Doctor, is written by Matthew Jacobs, the screenwriter of 1996’s Doctor Who: The Movie. Jacobs was the first person to write for Paul McGann’s Doctor and this audio drama marks his first time penning any Doctor Who media since then.

In Jacobs’ story, the TARDIS arrives in Milan at the turn of the twentieth century, where the time travellers encounter legendary opera composer, Giacomo Puccini (voiced by Tim McInnerny, known for Blackadder, Game of Thrones, and Doctor Who: Planet of the Ood). But the Doctor’s not the only alien around with an interest in the music of love.

Doctor Who – The Eighth Doctor Adventures: Deadly Strangers is now available to pre-order as a collector’s edition 3-disc CD box set (+ download for just £22.99) or as a digital download only (for just £18.99), exclusively here.

The three new adventures for the Eighth Doctor and his companions are:

Puccini and the Doctor by Matthew Jacobs
Women’s Day Off by Lisa McMullin
The Gloaming by Lauren Mooney & Stewart Pringle

Producer David Richardson said:

“How brilliant to have Matthew Jacobs return to the series to write Puccini and the Doctor – a man so dedicated that he woke up at 4am in Los Angeles to listen in to our studio recordings! He’s given us a lovely and imaginative tale, which feels very much in the spirit of the Eighth Doctor TV movie.”

Matthew Jacobs said:

“This is the first time I’ve written a Doctor Who adventure since 1996. The Doctor is such an integral part of my life, so it’s been fascinating over the years to see it grow and grow. Paul has kept the Doctor alive at Big Finish in a marvellous way and he has become so much more sophisticated as a character than when we were starting.

“I was over the moon when script editor Matt Fitton asked me to put together a story. We discussed that this version of Paul’s Doctor is a bit closer to the TV movie Doctor – inquisitive, not as embittered as he gets through the Time War.

“The idea that stuck out was one where I got to deal with some unfinished business from the TV movie. In the movie, the Doctor says how sad it was that Puccini never got to finish Turandot, and it was the bane of his life towards the end. I wanted to tell a story to do with the nature of how we use music and how we search for love.”

Big Finish listeners can save money by pre-ordering Deadly Strangers in a multi-buy bundle with the previous Eighth Doctor Adventures box set, Echoes, for just £44 (collector’s edition CD + download) or £36 (download only) exclusively here.

All the above prices include the special pre-order discount and are subject to change after general release.

Jodie Whittaker and Mandip Gill return to Doctor Who in new Thirteenth Doctor adventures.

Jodie Whittaker and Mandip Gill

The Doctor and Yaz are off to see more of the universe in a new series of audio dramas from Big Finish.

Big Finish Productions, in partnership with BBC Studios, today announces a full series of Thirteenth Doctor audio dramas as Jodie Whittaker returns to the Whoniverse alongside Mandip Gill as Yasmin Khan.

First seen on screen in 2017, Jodie Whittaker made TV history as the first female incarnation of the beloved Time Lord in Doctor Who.

Now she’s back in a brand-new series of twelve, hour-long, full-cast audio adventures in time and space, due to be released from July 2025. By her side in the TARDIS, as ever, will be her best friend Yaz, once again played by Mandip Gill.

Jodie Whittaker said:

“I’m over the moon to be joining Big Finish for more adventures in the TARDIS. Recording the Thirteenth Doctor and Yaz is a really lovely thing to revisit. One of the things Mandip and I used to love on Doctor Who was getting in, doing a new episode and meeting a brand-new cast. I just can’t wait to step back into the boots, pull on the coat and get cracking. One thing’s for sure, it’s going to be brilliant.”

Mandip Gill added:

“Doctor Who has been a huge part of my career and personal life and I am looking forward to seeing how I can further enrich my character through this exhilarating series. To be able to work with Jodie again is a dream come true, we have such a special friendship, I’m sure the recordings will be filled with laughter.”

Big Finish’s Chairman, Jason Haigh-Ellery said:

“This year Big Finish is celebrating its 25th anniversary of producing full-cast Doctor Who audio drama – so, when we were granted the licence to create new stories set during the Thirteenth Doctor’s era, we immediately set to work.

“I am delighted that the inimitable Jodie and Mandip have decided to return to their roles with us and I’m excited to welcome them to Big Finish. Alongside our two other forthcoming series for the Fugitive Doctor (played by Jo Martin) and the Master (played by Sacha Dhawan), 2025 has never looked brighter for the Thirteenth Doctor and her fam.”

Big Finish’s Creative Director, Nicholas Briggs added:

“Jodie and Mandip were so welcoming to me when I worked on set with them in the TV show, so I’m looking forward to repaying the compliment. They’re lovely people and they’re full of enthusiasm for this project.”

Doctor Who fans can now pre-order The Thirteenth Doctor Adventures at bigfinish.com.

Doctor Who - The Art of the Audio Adventures

Big Finish founder and chairman, Jason Haigh-Ellery said: “Over the past 25 years I have often been asked by fans of the Doctor Who audio dramas whether we would ever do a book featuring some of our best covers.

“I am always amazed at the works of art that are created by the cover artists that work with Big Finish. Whether they are depicting a dystopian future, providing a glimpse of the past or strange and wonderful new worlds, they capture a moment contained within the audio drama and provide it as an invitation to come and join the Doctor and his companions on their adventures. This book pays tribute to these artists and to the productions they are depicting.”

Big Finish creative director and executive producer, Nicholas Briggs, added: “The cover artwork is the first encounter our listeners have with our stories, before they’ve even started listening to them. So, the artists who create them must capture the essence of what each particular story is, or, more importantly, the essence of it that we want to convey.

“The covers must engage the imagination of the audience, and to do that they must also first engage the imagination of the producers. I’ve had some of my most interesting creative discussions at Big Finish with cover artists. We’ve been blessed with many brilliant artists who have the gift of bringing the essence of Doctor Who to life.

“Recently, I’ve particularly enjoyed commissioning far simpler, but arguably even more evocative pieces which instantly sum up an era of Doctor Who. It’s where the audio inspires the visual, creating a gallery of imagination.”
