Pearl Mackie has met new Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall… but she’s not giving anything away about Bill’s future
Last night (June 24) saw the first episode of a Doctor Who two-part finale that will act as both lead actor Peter Capaldi and showrunner Steven Moffat’s penultimate adventure. But what about Bill?
Well, actress Pearl Mackie appeared live on Graham Norton’s BBC Radio 2 show and said absolutely nothing that could be taken as concrete evidence about her future on the series.
But she did drop a few tidbits that could hint at her character staying on, including talking to future showrunner Chris Chibnall (or she’s just doing that whole acting thing really well and leading us all on).
“[Chris] said some nice things, he was very pleased about the series and how Bill’s been received,” she said, adding the she didn’t know if he has a game plan for what to do when he takes over.
Graham also asked if Pearl or the people in charge of the show will make the decision if Bill were to go, to which Pearl coyly replied: “I don’t know! I think, hopefully, we will make the decision.”
Pearl rightly mentioned that companions have stayed on after the Doctor has regenerated before (Rose and Clara being the two Nu-Who examples) but, you guessed it, only said that Bill could stay on.
So what are we thinking, people? Total departure, or leaving it open for cameo appearances as an independent badass a la Martha Jones?
Whatever Pearl does or doesn’t know, it’s clear she’s pretty good at keeping her secrets for now.
Doctor Who concludes next Saturday at 6:45pm on BBC One.
