An auction of Doctor Who props and costumes raised £245,243 for Children in Need.

Auctioneer Propstore, based in Chenies, Buckinghamshire, said more than 2,000 global fans and collectors bid on more than 170 lots.

The biggest earner was a Dalek – used on screen for actress Jodie Whittaker’s final episode as the doctor – which sold for £16,380.

Stephen Lane, founder and chief executive of Propstore, was delighted and said:

“From Doctors to Daleks, the dedication and passion of Doctor Who fans supporting this auction has been second to none.”

“It’s amazing to be able to share parts of Doctor Who with the fan community, and we hope they enjoy owning a piece of TV history.”

Tommy Nagra, director of content at BBC Children in Need said:

“The Doctor Who family have been long-time friends of the charity and we are so thrilled to see them come together once again to support BBC Children in Need”.

Doctor Who Series 15 arrives on BBC and Disney+ on April 12 2025 with Alan Cumming to guest star

Doctor Who Series 15 arrives on BBC and Disney+ on April 12 2025 with Alan Cumming to guest star

It’s time to set your alarms! The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) is on his way back to your screens, this time with a new addition to the TARDIS, Belinda Chandra (Varada Sethu).

Series 15 will officially launch on Saturday 12 April at 8am on BBC iPlayer and later that day on BBC One in the UK. At the same time, those outside of the UK can watch the Doctor and Belinda on their epic adventures on Disney+ where available.

And that’s not all… Emmy Award winner Alan Cumming will guest star in the second episode as Mr Ring-a-Ding. He’s a happy, funny, singalong cartoon, who lives in Sunny Town with his friend Sunshine Sally. However, in 1952, after years of repeats in cinemas across the land, Mr Ring-a-Ding suddenly looks beyond the screen and sees the real world outside – and the consequences are terrifying.

Russell T Davies, Showrunner says:

“Only Alan Cumming could give a runaway cartoon so much wit, malice, danger and fun. He makes the whole universe of Doctor Who wilder and madder than ever, and it’s an absolute honour to welcome him on board the TARDIS.”

The new season stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor, Varada Sethu as Belinda Chandra, and Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday. Also adventuring through time and space this season are Rose Ayling-Ellis, Anita Dobson, Christopher Chung, Michelle Greenidge, Jonah Hauer-King, Ruth Madeley, Jemma Redgrave, and Susan Twist.

Doctor Who is produced by Bad Wolf with BBC Studios for the BBC and Disney Branded Television.

Doctor Who Convention Gallifrey One is Coming to an End

Doctor Who Convention Gallifrey One is Coming to an End

Gallifrey One 36 (c) Gallifrey One

Gallifrey One, the largest dedicated Doctor Who convention in the world, will take place for the final time in 2028. The non-profit convention has been running since 1990, taking place each year (2021’s covid lockdown excepted) in Los Angeles. However, Gallifrey One co-founder and program director Shaun Lyon has announced that Gallifrey One 38, in February 2028, will bring the beloved convention to a close.

Writing on the Gallifrey One site, Lyon explains the decision. It comes as key members of the team plan on retiring from running the convention. It will be the conclusion of almost 40 years of tireless volunteer work. Rather than hand over the title and reputation to a new team, the existing board are instead bringing the event to a definitive end. The advance notice is deliberate, in recognition of how far some fans travel to attend the LAX Marriott based festivities. Many Doctor Who fans had a trip to Gally, as it’s affectionately known, on their wish list to achieve ‘one day.’ This announcement is timed to give those fans up to three years to make that dream a reality. Similarly, previous visitors will have a chance to make plans for a last hurrah, or two, or three.

It may be the end of Gallifrey One, but the moment is being prepared for by a new Showmasters LA event

Meanwhile, while the Gallifrey One title and event are being retired, plans are already afoot for an unofficial successor. Jason Joiner and Paul Jones of Showmasters Events have been involved with Gallifrey One for a number of years, proving vital in helping the American team bring in top guests from the UK. John Hurt, Christopher Eccleston, and Jodie Whittaker and among those Showmasters have helped bring to Gally in years gone past. They’ve also been responsible for some of Gally’s most popular strands, where fans can perform script readings with Doctor Who stars, or attend evening receptions with them. The Showmasters team are now making plans to provide the established Gally community with a new convention from 2029 on.

Showmasters are organisers of several tentpole events in the Britisth convention calendar. Their flagship convention London Film and Comic Con takes place twice a year, along with Glasgow Film and Comic Con, and Cardiff Film and Comic Con. They’re also the organisers of CollectormaniaLondon Film Fair, and London Comic Mart. Altogether, almost every month of the year features a Showmasters event, big or small.

The name of the Showmasters Los Angeles event is still unknown, but won’t contain the word “Gallifrey.” In contrast to the current convention, it won’t be a non-profit. However, given that the express intent is to service the existing Gally community, that costs and charges will be more in line with what those fans have come to expect. It will likely be months, or even years, before Showmasters are ready to reveal further details. So we’ll have to wait some time for information like the location of the new convention.

The Mill was the company responsible for the VFX of around 150 episodes of Doctor WhoThe Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood until 2013, the same year a group of artists and producers from The Mill’s TV department formed their own company, Milk VFX.

The post-production and visual effects company launched in 1990. Along will providing visual effects, they designed the Doctor Who title sequence introduced in the first 2005 Doctor Who story Rose.

According to a letter from the Technicolor Group to their team, the Group has been experiencing difficulties linked to a variety of factors including the difficult operational situation resulting from post-covid recovery, a costly and complex separation from the previous group followed by the writers’ strike leading to a slowdown in customer orders causing severe cash flow pressures.

Doctor Who radiophonic archive made available for first time

Doctor Who radiophonic archive made available for first time

Delia Derbyshire at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in the 1960s

The BBC has announced that its groundbreaking Radiophonic Workshop archive has been made available to musical artists and producers for the first time.

The archive includes samples of sounds and music made for a huge range of BBC shows from Doctor Who to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, all of which were created using the Workshop’s unconventional methods – including hitting lampshades and manipulating tape loops with milk bottles.

The work done at the studio has been cited as an influence by a number of major musicians including Brian Eno and Hans Zimmer, and the BBC has said that by making the archive available, it will preserve “an important musical heritage for generations to come”.

The key features of the new library include authentic sounds from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop archives, new recordings and experiments by Workshop members and associates, and a wide range of sounds, including archival content, found sounds, junk percussion, tape loops, and vintage synthesisers.

You can get a closer look at the Workshop by watching the below trailer:

Describing the Workshop as “a department at the BBC that was purely for making bonkers noises”, archivist Mark Ayres explained further why the decision had been made to open up the archive.

“I’m the youngest member of the core Radiophonic Workshop – and I’m 64!” he said. “We’re not going to be around forever.

“It was really important to leave a creative tool, inspired by our work, for other people to use going forward. I hope we’ve made an instrument that will inspire future generations.”

He added:

“This instrument is all formed from the work, processes and equipment that the Workshop created and used.

“You know, sampling now really looks like sampling then, but with a few more twiddles. I’ve been saying for years that Workshop composers such as Delia Derbyshire and John Baker were really samplists.”

Meanwhile, Harry Wilson, head of recording at Spitfire Audio – which has collaborated with the BBC on the project – said:

“We’re not just looking back at what the members were doing way back when. We’re projecting a strand of their work into the future and saying: if the Workshop was engaged with a similar process now, what would it sound like?”

And Dominic Walker, global business director for BBC Studios, said:

“We are thrilled to be collaborating once again with Spitfire Audio in bringing the legendary sounds of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop to a new generation of musicians and composers with this valuable online library.”

Access to the library costs £149 at full price, although there as introductory offer of £119 that will run until 17th March – you can access it now.

Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper star in a brand-new series of full-cast audio dramas, beginning in August 2025 from Big Finish Productions.

In 2005, Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper, as the Ninth Doctor and Rose Tyler respectively, took a whole new generation of Doctor Who fans on the trip of a lifetime into time and space.

Twenty years later, the trip continues, as they’re set to star in a brand-new series of twelve, hour-long, full-cast audio adventures, due to be released from August 2025.

Christopher Eccleston said:

“I am so happy to be back recording more adventures for the Ninth Doctor with Billie. I don’t think my Doctor exists without Rose. He’s a ‘one man, one companion’ kind of alien. We’ve explored him on his own at Big Finish, as a loner. But there’s a resilience and a bravery and a deep empathy to Billie as Rose, that’s why I do this. They complete each other.”

Billie Piper added:

“I can’t think of a better time for Rose to reunite with her first Doctor than now. Twenty years after she first ran into the TARDIS and towards adventure, here we are again, me and Chris, ready to have fun facing the universe – and the monsters – together.”

Producer Matt Fitton said:

“Twenty years after the Ninth Doctor and Rose burst onto our screens, Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper are back with that brilliant dynamic – the Doctor showing Rose the universe, and Rose showing him the best of humanity.

“Across twelve episodes, slotting neatly into that 2005 series, we have more Jackie Tyler, more Powell Estate, plus friends and enemies old and new through time and space. Our writers have done an amazing job recapturing the spirit of that very special season, and Chris and Billie have embraced these scripts with delight and gusto. They’re having a blast, back on that trip of a lifetime – and they sound fantastic!”

You can now pre-order Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures on CD + download (or download only) exclusively from bigfinish.com.
