Many recalled him as one of their favourite Doctors from the Doctor Who series, in which he starred in from 1970 to 1974.

He was the third incarnation of the titular character.

“The man who put the Lord in Time Lord, he was charming, dazzling, quick witted and glittered like the star he was. We were lucky he not only joined the Who family, but embraced it too. Much missed,” wrote one fan.

A tribute written about Pertwee, who also starred in The Navy Lark, on the Doctor Who News website said:

“One of the greatest stars of Doctor Who and one of programmes greatest ambassadors, Jon Pertwee is remembered with as much affection today as he was when he hung up his velvet jacket and shrugged off the character of the Third Doctor at the end of his tenure in 1974.

“The fact that over forty-five years later the character lives on, remembered in Comic strips and Audio Books, on Blu-ray releases and in fan fiction, is a great tribute to the man who brought the incarnation to life.”
