The actor Johnny Dennis has died.

Johnny Dennis played the bus driver Murray in the 1987 Doctor Who story Delta and the Bannermen.

As well as Doctor Who, Dennis appeared in television shows such as The Bill, The Devil’s Crown, The Enigma Files, Prospects, Dempsey and Makepeace, Surgical Spirit and Conjugal Rights. On film, he appeared in Billy the Kid and the Green Baize Vampire, The Great Escape II: The Untold Story, and Il giovane Toscanini.

An actor by trade, Dennis was affectionately known as the ‘Voice of Lord’s’, having been MCC’s senior announcer for 18 years.

He started at the Home of Cricket during the late 1970s as deputy announcer and his unique, warm tone quickly became part of the Lord’s experience.

Dennis’ Lord’s career began after a chance meeting with Test Match Special commentator Brian Johnston, while playing for the Lord’s Taverners.

Johnston recommended Dennis to Alan Curtis, who was the full-time Lord’s announcer and, like Dennis, an actor.

Curtis had been called off to work on a Carry On film and asked Dennis to step in to cover him.

This was the first of many occasions on which Dennis would deputise throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s and he flourished instantly, becoming very popular amongst MCC Members and other supporters at Lord’s.

He also worked as announcer at Test matches and One-Day Internationals at other grounds across the country during a long and illustrious career.

Even after scaling back his announcing commitments in 2014, Dennis remained closely involved with MCC and compered the Lord’s Tales evenings of that year to celebrate the bicentenary of the current Ground.

Johnny also had a long association with the Player’s Theatre Music Hall in Leeds and took over from Leonard Sachs as the host of The Good Old Days in 1988.
