Jodie Whittaker wants to bring you “hope” with her first series of Doctor Who.

The former Broadchurch star steps into the TARDIS for series 11 to usher in a brand new era as the first-ever female Doctor, having debuted in an explosive final scene in the 2017 Christmas special.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jodie jokes that the dramatic theme of her Doctor’s regeneration will definitely be carrying over into the full series.

“Well, I would say that [the series is] hopeful and fizzing with wonder,” she explained. “I have absolutely shot myself in the foot for any ADR, because I get in there, and realise I speak at a hundred miles an hour. If a plane goes over I’m like, ‘Are you kidding?’

“I’ve got to try and match that speech of ‘Di-didda-di-didda-di-didda’? But essentially I think the big theme is hope!”

Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall described the 13th Doctor as “warm”, “inclusive” and “energetic”, while Jodie’s co-star Mandip Gill — who plays companion Yasmin — compares her performance to another notable Doctor.

“She has a similar energy to Matt Smith’s Doctor,” Gill explained. “Very high energy. Jodie has that about her Doctor.”

Chibnall recently said that there “wasn’t even a question” about picking a female Doctor for his first series as showrunner because “the time was right” for the groundbreaking change.

Doctor Who‘s 11th series will premiere on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US this autumn.
