Good news for anyone who wants more Doctor Who, the new documentary Doctor Who Am I has earned itself a UK cinema release.

According to Variety, the documentary is getting a UK release sometime in October and will be distributed by Kaleidoscope, with the potential to release internationally as well.

The documentary, directed by Vanessa Yuille, tells the story of the infamous 1996 Doctor Who film which was made during a gap in the TV series.

Talking about this exciting development, Yuille said, “We’re a small movie with a big heart, and Kaleidoscope saw that right away. Teaming up with Kaleidoscope is a perfect match for us because even though we’re an American movie, they understand the Doctor Who franchise and the global reach of the fandom. They can bring our documentary from the ‘Whoniverse’ to the universe.”

Paul McGann starred as the Time Lord in this film, but it wasn’t well received by fans as they were upset by the notion that Doctor Who was half human, especially after he kissed his assistant, Grace Holloway.

Matthew Jacobs, who wrote the original film and is co-directing the documentary, talks about the process of making that film as well as the fan reactions that followed in this documentary. McGann also features in it.

Speaking about the film’s release, Kaleidoscope CEO Spencer Pollard said in a statement: “We at Kaleidoscope are delighted to be working with Matthew and Vanessa on this fabulous film. It’s a real fan piece. Festivals and distributors around the world hopefully will enjoy it as much as we did.”

Jacobs added: “Now, more than ever, we need a positive movie about Doctor Who fandom as we move towards the show’s 60th anniversary. We’re so excited Kaleidoscope, like audiences have, recognise that our documentary is essential viewing for all lovers of storytelling.”
