Doctor Who

According to a report in The Radio Times, while Doctor Who series 13 filming is already underway, we still don’t know a lot about the continuing adventures of Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor.

Sure, we know John Bishop is joining the gang as Dan and we’ve heard a few rumours about returning monsters and Jodie Whittaker’s potential exit, but overall the new episodes have been kept pretty much under wraps, leading eagle-eyed fans to look all the harder for any hints or details online.

And now they might have found something. Deep in the recesses of the internet, a few Doctor Who fans have unearthed a synopsis for a planned graphic novel tie-in, written by regular Who comic scribe Jody Houser and illustrated by Roberta Ingranata.

The reason for its significance? The story stars John Barrowman’s Captain Jack Harkness – and apparently it ties in directly with series 13’s second episode.

“A thrilling new Doctor Who Graphic Novel which stars fan-favourite Captain Jack Harkness as he goes up against the insidious Torchwood institute!” the synopsis reads.

“In the midst of kicking alien butt – and looking good doing it – Captain Jack Harkness is suddenly transported through a time-window to 19th Century Cardiff… again! Realising there’s more than one thing afoot, he sets out to uncover what the Victorian-era Torchwood Institute team are up to behind closed doors, hoping to solve the mystery of why time-windows are cropping up everywhere.

“But what he finds is very unexpected, and will certainly leave him needing a hand from some old friends…

“Bursting straight out of the long-running hit television series, this bold new tale ties in directly with episode two of the hotly-anticipated series 13. Buy it, read it, then travel back in time to read it for the first time all over again…!”

The synopsis was originally found on the official Penguin Random House website, and while it has since been removed it is still publicly available to view on other sites. When contacted the BBC declined to comment on “speculation.”

John Barrowman Daleks

But of course, this synopsis does open up some intriguing possibilities – perhaps most notably the potential return of John Barrowman’s Captain Jack Harkness for series 13. In some ways this wouldn’t be too big a surprise given that Barrowman reprised his fan-favourite role in series 12 and (more extensively) the 2021 New Year’s special Revolution of the Daleks, but it’s the first real hint that Jack could be back again since the Doctor waved him off in January.

Alternatively, it could be that the “tie-in” to episode two is working slightly differently, with Jack thrown onto the fringes of a story that he’s not necessarily a huge part of in the main series. Perhaps the Victorian setting of the graphic novel crops up in the series, or maybe this story is a prequel to episode two, shortly before another surprise return for the galaxy’s most charming Time Agent.

Then again, it could be that the “time windows” sending Jack back in time are the real issue to watch here, rather than Jack himself. Who knows? Perhaps some incident causing the “time windows” is a crucial storyline in series 13, with gaps in space and time opening all over the place and kicking off adventures in other stories and spin-off media (i.e. this Jack story could be just one of many similar spin-offs). With that in mind, Jack might not be back in the main series at all.

Still, whether it’s a plot-related or character-based spin-off from the next series, one thing is for sure – series 13’s second instalment looks to be like an episode worth watching. If only we had our own time windows to jump ahead and watch it…

Doctor Who returns to BBC One later this year.

According to The Daily Mail newspaper in the UK, Doctor Who will battle old villains the Cybermen in a plot that is the stuff of classic horror.

Jodie Whittaker’s Time Lord clashes with them in the 19th century in a “darker” new series out next year.

And the plot involves the part-human, part-machine monsters inspiring author Mary Shelley to write iconic horror novel Frankenstein.

A source said:

“This new run is much scarier than Jodie’s first year and will definitely put the frighteners on fans. Things are about to get darker for the Doctor.”

The Cybermen have not been seen since they shot Peter Capaldi’s 12th Doctor in 2017, causing him to regenerate as Whittaker. They first appeared alongside original Time Lord William Hartnell in 1966.

Mary Shelley has been in audio plays as a companion of the 8th Doctor, played by Paul McGann.

Chris Chibnall, who took over from Steven Moffat  as showrunner in 2018, did not use any “old monsters” in his first series – but put a Dalek into the Christmas special.

He has since dropped hints that Whittaker’s second run will feature some familiar faces.

DOCTOR WHO devastated fans when it was revealed the show wouldn’t be returning to screens until 2020 after Jodie Whittaker’s first series as the Time Lord. However, there are claims floating about suggesting a special Christmas episode could be airing this year.

Doctor Who caused controversy when they announced there would be no Christmas Special and instead a New Year’s on-off episode was show.

Following that, BBC fans were further disappointed when show runners explained season 12 wouldn’t be returning to screens until 2020.

However, to tide viewers over until the new series, there is reportedly going to be a Christmas Special airing later this year.

It comes after the Daily Star claimed the broadcaster was considering creating a mid-season instalment after being ‘disappointed’ only 5.5million fans tuned in for the January one-off.

A spokesperson added to the publication:

“This is just speculation. It is far too early to say what the schedules will be at that time of year.”

The upcoming series will be the second with Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor, the thirteenth in the show’s run.

Nevertheless, it has been confirmed that Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill will be reprising their roles and joining the Time Lord on more adventures.

And one other thing they can expect to see is the Daleks.

The New Year’s special showed a revamped look of the iconic alien, which divided some fans, but Jodie defended the change.

“I really can’t wait to step back in and get to work again. It’s such an incredible role. It’s been an extraordinary journey so far and I’m not quite ready to hand it over yet,” she told the press.

It has been previously suggested the actress has signed a similar deal to her predecessors, Matt Smith and David Tennant.

Should this be the case, season 13 could be Jodie’s last as the Doctor.

Doctor Who returns to BBC One next year.

** Spoiler Alert (Possibly) **

According to Wales Online, mysterious signs have started appearing around Cardiff Bay , prompting great excitement among fans of Doctor Who that the hit sci-fi series’ greatest villain is about to make a return.

Mock ballot posters emblazoned with the message ‘Vote Saxon’ have been spotted popping up in Tiger Bay and along Lloyd George Avenue, leading some to believe that the Master – or, at least the incarnation played by John Simm – is to stage a comeback on the long-running BBC show.

If that’s true it’ll mark the first time The Doctor’s 13th regeneration  (played by the franchise’s first female actor, Jodie Whittaker) will have faced the rogue Time Lord – the previous face-off with him having taken place during Peter Capaldi ‘s stint in the TARDIS.

Played by numerous actors over the decades, The Master was first portrayed by Simm in 2007 when he was picked by show runner Russell T Davies to go up against David Tennant.

Simm debuted as the Master in a trio episodes – Utopia, The Sound of Drums and Last of the Time Lords – in the guise of slimy politician and wannabe Prime Minister Harold Saxon, who eventually went on to cause chaos after being voted into Number 10 Downing Street.

However, in the final scene of Last of the Time Lords, the Master gets killed, but his ashes were used to resurrect him two years later.

The last time we saw Simm was in 2017 when, via some time travel loophole, he was brought back to star opposite Michelle Gomez , who had succeeded him to play the role, thereby making it the first time two different versions of the Master had turned up together on the series.

And with the next season of Doctor Who currently filming around Barry Island, it certainly looks like the Vote Saxon posters could be legit.

What is more, Simm himself has never ruled out another return to the part.

Doctor Who set for massive change next series over fall in ratings?

According to The Daily Mail newspaper in the UK it seems Doctor Who will be taking her shortest time trip ever, from a Sunday to Saturday…

BBC bosses are planning on moving the show to its original evening slot after a steady ratings slide during Jodie Whittaker’s debut series.

An insider revealed:

“There is a feeling families are freer to watch on Saturdays than Sundays, when kids have homework to finish”.

“While the show rated well overall, there were concerns over the decline in audience.

“Returning to Saturdays is being discussed as a likely option.”

The series averaged a respectable 5.7 million across the 10 episodes.

Episodes for the new Doctor Who series, out early next year, are already being filmed.

Whittaker’s run had a mixed response. Some said storylines were too politically correct but others loved the joy she brought.

The Gallifreyan Newsroom would like to stress that the above story has not been confirmed by the BBC, so should be treated as rumour at this stage!.
