BBC launches new Wonder Chase experience on Roblox.

The BBC has entered the world of Roblox today, as it launches BBC Wonder Chase. People enter a free, fun, vibrant world, featuring some of the biggest BBC shows like Match of the Day, Doctor Who, EastEnders, and The Next Step. They will also meet some of the BBC’s most famous faces – including Gary Lineker, Zara McDermott, Louis Theroux, Hacker T Dog, and the Fifteenth Doctor.

People can play fun mini games, collect BBC iPlayer-themed coins, learn interesting nature facts and complete tricky obstacle courses. Along the way, they can challenge themselves to find and collect limited edition stickers or just take it easy, relax and chat with pals in their friends list while watching clips from some of their favourite BBC shows in the cinema area.

The new BBC Wonder Chase experience aims to reach young people where they are and bring the BBC to them. Roblox is enormously popular with younger audiences, and is used by over 71 million people every day. The experience is free on Roblox, and available on PC, mobile (iOS, Android), PlayStation, Xbox. To find it, just go to Roblox and search for BBC Wonder Chase.

Fiona Campbell, controller of youth audience, BBC iPlayer and BBC Three, says:

“BBC Wonder Chase brings some of the biggest BBC shows from the worlds of sport, drama and the natural world alive in a game space that encourages play and social interaction between friends and also the show’s leading characters. Showcasing the breadth of BBC content on a platform with more than 71 million users.”

Patricia Hildalgo, Director of Children’s and Education, says:

“As the children’s media landscape is constantly evolving, we want to meet kids wherever they are. We know Roblox is hugely popular with children and we’re giving them the chance to interact and play with their favourite CBBC shows and characters, and discover more to love from across the BBC.”

The journey begins in Wonder Central, a fantastical city set on the water. Here, people will run into documentarians Louis Theroux and Zara McDermott, have a laugh with CBBC’s Hacker T Dog, or a red nose game from Comic Relief. From Wonder Central, they can also find portals to other parts of the experience – including:

  • Total Sport – a collection of sporty islands people can adventure around, surrounded by giant inflatables and activities, where they can meet and chat to Match of the Day stars Gary Lineker, Micah Richards and Alan Shearer.
  • Deep Space Zone – an otherworldly planet where people will find Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor and Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday as well as a mischievous Goblin.
  • Tiny Planet – here people will enter an English country garden, but they’ll be the size of a bug! An interactive space for fun and learning about nature, and where players can chat to some of the BBC’s best known nature presenters, including Liz Bonnin and CBBC’s Deadly 60’s Steve Backshall.
  • Festival Park – a celebration of music, art and culture all set in a chilled out, magical festival. People can find and chat to Michelle, Kenzie and Eldon from the hit CBBC show The Next Step, or visit the BBC News rave tent.

BBC Wonder Chase world will evolve across the coming year with new content added and new worlds developed.

The experience was made by the BBC with Bristol based games developer Mobile Pie. The BBC has also used a number of accessibility tools for the experience, which are available on the Roblox platform. This includes the option to stop or pause motion such as grass or wind to reduce animations for those who may find them distracting. There is built-in support for Adaptive Controllers for people using PlayStation or Xbox, plus the ability to change what the buttons do so that users can control their experience. And there is a feature where users can automate a double jump, a key action, to help those who may have issues tapping twice in quick succession.

BBC Studios has announced that it has teamed up with Reality+ to launch a collection of immersive experiences in the metaverse, which will be based on BBC brands including Doctor Who.

Nicki Sheard, president of brands & licensing for BBC Studios, said: “I’m delighted that BBC Studios is partnering with Reality+ and The Sandbox on this exciting venture.

“While the metaverse is still in its infancy, it may shape how we consume and experience entertainment in the future and I’m looking forward to seeing how fans interact with our brands in this space.

“This project forms part of BBC Studios’ broader ambitious plans to grow our brands into new categories, with innovative technology and platforms forming an integral part of this.”

Doctor Who – creative mode map in Fortnite

Doctor Who has become the latest entertainment brand to crash into the wildly unpredictable world of Fortnite, with a set of Creative mode maps officially backed by BBC Studios.

The new content will allow players to go on adventures and missions involving locations from the world of the show – including the iconic TARDIS.

The story justification for this crossover involves a mysterious entity known as the Reality Virus, which causes the TARDIS to malfunction and suddenly appear on a Fortnite island.

Players will be tasked with finding Dynamorphic Generator Crystals spread across the exciting terrain in order to repair the Doctor’s legendary mode of transportation.

Mat Way, Global Director of Gaming & Interactive at BBC Studios, said:

“Developing an island in Fortnite is new territory for Doctor Who and we’re excited to welcome the game’s established players into the Whoniverse.

“This is a great opportunity to introduce a gaming audience to Doctor Who and also for the existing community to experience a brand-new adventure. Players can expect a fast-paced, unpredictable journey with familiar friends and foes making appearances along the way.”

Options included in this new feature include a box fighting map inspired by the season 11 episode Kerblam!, an escape map featuring the destructive Pting from The Tsuranga Conundrum, and a rumble map featuring Time Lords and Daleks.

If you’re in the mood for a break, the game also includes a virtual Doctor Who museum, where fans can learn more about the friends and foes who have appeared throughout the long-running series.

Face a CyberReaper with the Thirteenth and Tenth Doctor

Face a CyberReaper with the Thirteenth and Tenth Doctor

The Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) and the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) need your help to save reality in the new console and PC game, The Edge of Reality, releasing on the 14th October 2021.

Compatible with current and next-gen consoles as well as PC, The Edge of Reality reimagines and expands on previous VR-only game The Edge of Time, with a completely new and compelling adventure.

The creators of this new Doctor Who console game gave some of the behind the scenes away before the Chaosverse is unleashed!

Doctor Who - Edge of Reality Concept Art

Writer Gavin Collinson, explains the excitement and teases more about expanding of Doctor Who: The Edge of Time, for non-VR consoles and PC.

“I wanted to take everything we knew people liked about the previous game (Doctor Who: The Edge of Time) and say, ‘Fantastic, more of that please!”

Doctor Who - Edge of Reality Concept Art

The Edge of Reality contains many thrills and excitements, including a brand new design of Cybermen. On the CyberReaper, Gavin says:

“I’m a huge Doctor Who fan, so as a writer a brief like this is fantastic, because all the things that you want to see in a game, you can create. It makes my heart sing to be able to have two Doctors in this story, to have the Cybermen and the Daleks, and not only that, but a new version of the Cyberman; a new enemy which adds to the mythology of the Cybermen. They’re an enemy that does evolve, and this latest iteration is something very different and macabre. Terrifying!”

And one of the developers, Stuart Gilray, notes:

“We wanted to explore the idea of a Cyberman that was more aggressive than ever before, so we looked at why Cybermen are the way they are and imagined what could make them even more dangerous. So if you look closely at the CyberReaper design, you’ll see that it is made up of different versions of the Cybermen – how this happened and why it happened, all will be revealed in the game.”

Doctor Who - Edge of Reality Concept Art

But what is the Chaosverse? Gavin explains:

“The Chaosverse is a geographical place, but also a state where the normal laws of physics have ceased to exist. It is an area of extreme danger, because everything that you think you can hold true, you can no longer hold true. As a gamer that’s enormous fun, because you simply don’t know what to expect. There are still plenty of elements there to make it recognisably Doctor Who, but it’s Doctor Who with a twist. I think it’s a section of the game people will really enjoy, because Doctor Who at its best is unexpected, but maintains all those motifs that we enjoy.”

Stuart adds:

It’s a chaotic universe, where the Reality Virus has hit and is breaking everything down. Things appear that don’t belong or aren’t where they’re meant to be, and we played upon that. It’s been unique, it’s been fun, and it’s opened up some great possibilities, such as introducing the Tenth Doctor.”

Doctor Who - Edge of Reality Concept Art

On writing for the Tenth and Thirteenth Doctor:

“Working with those characters was fantastic. With the Doctor, she’s always going to be the brightest person in the room, which is fun. But it’s also difficult to write because if she’s already got the answers, where’s the problem?! And so it’s just about balancing that: having the stakes high enough, putting her in a position where she is in peril, and then letting her go. Working with Jodie Whittaker is like a one-woman adrenaline rush, she immediately sweeps you up in the story. “David Tennant was also a joy to watch, particularly as we move the Tenth Doctor’s story forward, and we see a different side to him.”

Writer of the music for the games The Edge of Time and The Edge of Reality, Richard Wilkinson, told us how he went about for this style of a Doctor Who adventure:

“It was kind of like doing a sequel, with all of these ideas and themes and motifs ready to use as ingredients. It’s the first time that I’ve done something like that, where I’ve been able to reinterpret my own stuff and build on it. It’s like a tiny little legacy, being able to give something to the world Doctor Who and then revisit that and think about some fresh new twists on it.”

“Being able to record a new version of the Doctor Who theme for the game was an absolute honour – if you’d have told nine-year-old me, his head would have exploded. When you play the game, and the theme kicks in, it’s my new version with an orchestra and loads of weird sounds and synths, which was just so much fun to do. I’m excited for people to hear that as well as the rest of the soundtrack.”

Plus he shares an exclusive first listen of the CyberReaper theme…

“I knew we needed a theme for the Cybermen that would tie together all their narrative threads, but I also needed a distinction between the sound of the Cybermen, and the new character of the CyberReaper, who has a very jagged, aggressive motif. It needed to be something that was quite short and quite impactful, because you never know when you’re going to run into the CyberReaper. And it’s not the kind of character where you want something that’s slow and evolving and builds a sense of dread, because it’s a relentless pursuit and a relentless enemy. It’s a short, jagged, low strings, double bass and cello thing that you’ll hear, and then you’ll know you’re in a situation that you want to get out of pretty fast!”

Not long to wait now! Prepare to enter the Chaosvere with The Edge of Reality here: https://www.doctorwhotheedgeofreality.com or find out more here.

Doctor Who - The Lonely Assassins

…Merciless as ever, the Weeping Angels are back with a vengeance. Will you be able to uncover the truth and avoid their clutches? Now that the Weeping Angels have the power to infiltrate technology, no device is safe…

Developed by the award-winning studio Kaigan Games (Sara Is MissingSIMULACRA), The Lonely Assassins thrusts players into a dark mystery amidst a series of sinister events occurring at Wester Drumlins, a decrepit and supposedly uninhabited house in London. Filmed in London and Cardiff, the game sees players interacting with a mysteriously discarded phone in order to uncover its secrets and that of its former owner.
