MARK GATISS BEHIND THE RETURN OF DALEK FOES FOR SERIES 10

MARK GATISS BEHIND THE RETURN OF DALEK FOES FOR SERIES 10

Watch Doctor Who
The Movellans from Destiny of the Daleks (1979)

Doctor Who boss Steven Moffat has been discussing this week’s return of an alien race from the ’classic’ era ahead of the Series 10 debut.

The opening episode, The Pilot (written by Moffat), sees an appearance from one of the Daleks’ greatest foes, the Movellans.

Talking to Doctor Who Magazine 511, the showrunner said:

“It was actually Mark Gatiss who said, ‘Ooh, make them Movellans. That would be funny,’ so I said, ‘Okay, they’re Movellans.’

They’re dirtier and more frightened than the ones we saw in Destiny, so I set it long ago in the past, when they might have been slightly more human Movellans. It’s the way that kind of continuity should work: it’s a fleeting moment that doesn’t impede the story, while giving a little moment of pleasure to the long-term fan.”

Their only on-screen story came in 1979’s four-part adventure with the Fourth Doctor and Romana, Destiny of the Daleks. The two races had been locked in a brutal war until the return of Davros though, according to 1984’s Resurrection of the Daleks, Skaro’s finest lost that particular war to the Movellans.

However, don’t get too excited for their return as Steven warns, “blink and you’ll miss ’em in the actual episode.”

Watch the return of the Movellans from April 15, 2017 in Doctor Who Series 10, The Pilot with new companion Bill joining the Twelfth Doctor and Nardole.

MEET PEARL MACKIE THE DOCTOR’S NEW COMPANION – IN ISSUE 511 OF DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINE!

In her most revealing, in-depth interview to date, Pearl Mackie tells DWM how it feels to be stepping on board the TARDIS as the Doctor’s new companion…

“Every day. I have about a million different emotions,” Pearl says of her fast-approaching, eagerly awaited Doctor Who debut. “I’m excited. I’m nervous. I’m full of anticipation, really. Probably the same as most of the fans. Also, we’re still filming at the moment – we’re wrapping up the series so I’m trying to fit in all those emotions between, like, learning my lines. Which is fun. And a bit mad.”

Describing her character, Bill Potts, Pearl says, “Bill is very inquisitive, but she’s also very, very real and very human, so she does ask those kinds of questions – about him having two hearts, and where the toilet is in the TARDIS, and she says the TARDIS looks like a kitchen because it’s all shiny. She’s not, like, a sci-fi veteran. She likes sci-fi, but in her head it’s very ‘fi’; it’s completely fictional, and then she’s thrown into this amazing world where actually it’s all real and everything – anything – is possible. For something who’s human and 100% of this Earth, it’s completely mind-blowing.”

STEVEN MOFFAT: DOCTOR WHO SHOULD ‘REBOOT’ REGULARLY

STEVEN MOFFAT: DOCTOR WHO SHOULD ‘REBOOT’ REGULARLY

Doctor Who Series 10

In the latest edition of Doctor Who Magazine — issue 511, out now — showrunner Steven Moffat has been speaking about the opening episode for Series 10, The Pilot.

The story, which airs from April 15, 2017 around the world, is written by Steven and introduces new companion Bill Potts (played by Pearl Mackie). Moffat reveals to DWM that this episode is a “reboot” and a “very easy jumping-on point” for the show. He states:

“Well, I think Doctor Who probably should reboot itself every so often while maintaining its fragile continuity.”

The Doctor and Bill in ‘The Pilot’

Rose [2005] is definitely a reboot. The Eleventh Hour [2010] isn’t really; you sort of have to know that the Doctor used to be David Tennant for it to make any sense. It’s a fairly good jumping-on point, but you have to be aware that it’s not the first episode of all time. But Rose behaves as if it is. Obviously An Unearthly Child [1963] does. And The Pilot does. All the information is there. Maybe tonally it isn’t quite.

In 2005, they rebooted an old show, and it’s harder, over time, to gain viewers than it is to lose them – that’s one of the absolute realities of television – so you want to give people another reason to start watching.

So why not? Let’s call it a reboot.”

Doctor Who Series 10, The Pilot stars: Peter Capaldi (The Twelfth Doctor), Pearl Mackie (Bill Potts), Matt Lucas (Nardole), Stephanie Hyam (Heather), Jennifer Hennessy (Bill’s foster mum, Moira) and Nicholas Briggs (voice of the Daleks).

Doctor Who boss Steven Moffat chats ‘classic’ Doctors

Doctor Who boss Steven Moffat chats ‘classic’ Doctors

In the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine — issue 510 out this week, read all about it here — showrunner Steven Moffat talks about meeting the actors who played the Doctor throughout the years.

In the regular DWM feature Ask Steven, the writer unveils his “Classic Doctor Meet Sheet” which reveals that he has met all but two of the actors to play the Time Lord; those being the First Doctor, William Hartnell, and the Second Doctor, Patrick Troughton.

Speaking about his encounter with Third Doctor actor Jon Pertwee, the Doctor Who boss said:

“He was incredibly nice, and signed a picture for me, and told how he’d loved doing Doctor Who, and would always miss it. I said, with the tact that has never left me, ‘Oh well, Tom Baker next!’”

Speaking of the Fourth Doctor, Steven queued up to meet Tom Baker in Glasgow in the 1970s (fans may be delighted to know that a very young David Tennant was also present). He recalls:

“‘He handed me a Target Books badge, which I treasured for most of that week, and signed my copy of Planet of the Spiders, which I have to this day.”

Moffat also fondly discusses meeting Doctors Five through Eight in his monthly column for Doctor Who Magazine. Issue 510 also includes tributes to the late actor, Sir John Hurt, known to Who fans as the War Doctor.
