Steven Moffat on Series 10 finale: ‘exciting as Doctor Who has ever been’

Steven Moffat on Series 10 finale: ‘exciting as Doctor Who has ever been’

The Doctor Who showrunner has been discussing the first part of this year’s series finale, World Enough and Time, in the latest edition of Doctor Who Magazine.

During the exclusive Series 10 preview in issue 513 (out now), Steven discusses the notion of ‘time dilation’, horror in Doctor Who, and the beginning of the end…

World Enough and Time features an idea from the writer’s son Joshua (who has a keen interest in physics) – time dilation. In the penultimate episode of Doctor Who Series 10, the “four-strong TARDIS crew” (The Twelfth Doctor, Bill, Nardole and Missy) find themselves on a spaceship being sucked into a super massive black hole. This causes the ship to suffer from time dliation which means that “two days have passed at the front of the spaceship, thousands of years at the back.”

Not only that, the ship features a “grim, ghostly hospital” in which much of the episode is set, Steven told DWM:

“We had to make sure that our hospital didn’t look very much like any hospital you’d ever actually go to. So it’s quite operatic. Huge hospital sets. Huge wards. That’s not where kids will go and visit their grannies. It doesn’t look like that. At the same time, Doctor Who is in the business of making every dark corner and creepy cupboard seem extra scary – kids expect it to be a bit scary – so you’ve got those two things sort of at war with each other. But that’s the nature of the show.”

When asked how far Doctor Who could go with horror on BBC One on a Saturday evening, Moffat replied:

“Exactly as far as we’ve gone, I would say. Doctor Who is quite horrific, so you’ve got to deliver on those things. But you try to push it away from real-life horror.”

Finally, the Doctor Who showrunner enthused about the reception of the finale:

“When you see these episodes, I think you’ll love them – because we love them. I love them. Episode 11 is as properly exciting as Doctor Who has ever been, and, I suppose, it’s the beginning of the end…”

THE NEXT FOUR EPISODES ARE PREVIEWED IN ISSUE 513 OF DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINE!

The Ice Warriors and the Cybermen are on their way back to Doctor Who – so we have a choice of TWO monsters covers for our latest issue! Inside Issue 513, we preview the next four episodes to air, The Lie of the Land, Empress of Mars, The Eaters of Light and World Enough and Time.

Empress of Mars script writer Mark Gatiss tells us why he wanted to bring back the Ice Warriors in his new episode – but are they his all-time favourite Doctor Who monster?

The Cybermen are my favourites and yet I’ve never written for them, but the Ice Warriors are among my favourites: a great monster,” Mark smiles. “I always loved the pride of them, their Viking qualities and the voice. Even though they’ve had so few appearances, they loom so large. So I’d always wanted to bring them back, because I thought I could do something with them. You can just do a bit of worldbuilding, because there’s so much to play with…”

Doctor Who Crossover Featuring Four Doctors Announced

Doctor Who Crossover Featuring Four Doctors Announced

Doctor Who: The Lost Dimension:

Doctor Who fans are deep into the 10th season of the beloved BBC series, but they’re going to want to take a break to check out Doctor Who: The Lost Dimension, a crossover event featuring four Doctors from Titan Comics.

The Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Doctors will need to come together to face a threat that no one Doctor could face alone.

The event kicks off in the Alpha issue being released on Titan’s “Doctor Who Comics Day” global event on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2017. The story continues in the Ninth Doctor special on the same week.

According to Titan’s description, Doctor Who: The Lost Dimension, “is an epic event – comprised of eight chapters over three months – crossing over all four ongoing series (Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Doctor comics). The event will begin a new era for Titan’s Doctor Who comics, and will find the Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Doctor playing their part to battle The Void!

“The Void has always existed: ‘No place. The silent realm. The lost dimension.’ But the Void is no longer empty. The Void is hungry and devouring our universe – through time and space. Now, the four Doctors must join forces to save…everything!”

Doctor Who: The Lost Dimension will begin with the Alpha issue, which is being designed as a jumping on point for new readers, from writers George Mann (Eleventh Doctor), and Cavan Scott (Ninth Doctor), with art by Rachael Stott (Twelfth Doctor) and Rod Fernandes!

Doctor Who: The Lost Dimensions’ Alpha Issue will ship with three covers, including a special embossed foil TARDIS cover, a photo cover by Will Brooks, and a multi-Doctor mash-up by Rachael Stott and Luis Guerrero.

More details on Doctor Who: The Lost Dimension are still to come.

While Doctor Who: The Lost Dimension will feature the four modern Doctors, the BBC is busy casting the thirteenth. The tenth season of Doctor Who will be the final season for Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor. It will also be the final season for producer and showrunner Steven Moffat, who will hand the job over to Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall, who will introduce a new Doctor in Doctor Who’s eleventh season. It is unclear if new companion Bill Potts, played by Pearl Mackie, will stay with the series.

THE ESSENTIAL DOCTOR WHO: ROBOTS

THE ESSENTIAL DOCTOR WHO: ROBOTS

THE ESSENTIAL DOCTOR WHO: ROBOTS

THE ESSENTIAL DOCTOR WHO: ROBOTS

Panini’s lavish series of publications devoted to key aspects of the Doctor Who universe continues with an issue devoted to robots. The Doctor’s deadliest adversaries include mechanical killers such as the Yeti, the Voc robots and the clockwork droids. For more than five decades the series has realised some of our darkest fears about artificial intelligence and mankind’s relationship with its automated servants.

This 116-page bookazine includes interviews with:

Chris Boucher (writer of The Robots of Death)

Michael Kilgarriff (Robot)

John Leeson (voice of K9)

Tom MacRae (writer of The Girl Who Waited)

Dave Martin (K9’s co-creator)

Paul Murphy (director of The Caretaker and Robot of Sherwood)

Paul Tams (co-creator of the K9 television series)

Kate Walshe (visual effects producer)

The classic story guides include The War Machines, The Web of Fear, The Android Invasion, The Girl in the Fireplace, The Husbands of River Song and many more.

Among the other highlights are The Vampire Planet (an unproduced William Emms story from 1969), the strange story of the Mechonoids, a look at the Out of the Unknown episode that gave us the Mind Robber robots, Douglas Adams’ original notes for the Polyphase Avatron, the rise and fall of Kamelion and the history of robot comic strips.

Editor Marcus Hearn says: “2017 marks the 40th anniversary of K9’s first appearance in Doctor Who, so he looms large in our journey through more than 50 years of the series’ robots. It must be said that most of the mechanical characters we’re featuring aren’t quite as friendly as the Doctor’s dog…”

The Essential Doctor Who: Robots is on sale now at WH Smith and all good newsagents, price £9.99.
