Doctor Who series 11 cast confirm secretive South Africa filming

It’s fair to say that the filming of Jodie Whittaker’s first Doctor Who series has been kept under wraps, with the BBC working hard to stop any series 11 leaks or photos appearing that might spoil the upcoming adventures for the Thirteenth Doctor and her team.

However, as we get closer to the series 11 air date this autumn, more and more information is being released – and that includes some new details about the filming, with the Doctor Who cast finally confirming the long-running rumours about them shooting in South Africa.

Describing the experience as “absolutely amazing,” Jodie Whittaker explained that it wasn’t her first time shooting in South Africa, though it was probably the most ambitious.

“I played a British backpacker in a film called White Wedding,” she told Doctor Who Magazine.

“It was shot over 18 days. We started in the middle and drove to Cape Town, basically stopping and shooting. It was incredible. But I only spent about two days in Cape Town, whereas the Doctor Who shoot was three weeks.”

“It was warm, so that was good,” she continued.

“The ambition was huge and the landscapes there – you couldn’t have got that here. But it required a lot of focus because we knew we had a lot to do in three weeks.

“We were working with a really great South African crew. They recommended things for us to do on our days off!”

“They were in the middle of a drought,” her co-star Tosin Cole added, also noting that they “had to have two-minute showers” to preserve water supplies.

“But other than the water crisis, we had a really good time out there.”

The interview with Whittaker also confirms that the above picture is from the episode filmed in South Africa, which based on the companions’ outfits matches up with trailer footage of the Tardis team (see main image) facing new threats in mid-20th century America (rumoured to involve the civil rights movement and Rosa Parks).

And hey – if nothing else, it was a good chance for the new TARDIS crew to pick up some rays.

Doctor Who Magazine Issue 528

In the new issue of Doctor Who Magazine, showrunner Chris Chibnall describes the meticulous preparations to reveal Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor in the original trailer. Despite all the secret plotting, the plan nearly came off the tracks when their cover was in danger of being blown by a wedding and a Velothon…

In the exclusive article, Chris recalls his anxiety:

In my mind I’m thinking: are we really doing this? A secret shoot, with only nine people involved? Will this work? Can we reveal the new Doctor this way? Are the BBC really going to put it out during the Wimbledon Men’s Singles Final? Is it crazy? Will people even watch or notice? (Turns out, the answer to all those questions is yes).

Somewhere on a train, Jodie Whittaker is making her way towards us, having told people she’s off to make a low budget Scandinavian film this weekend.

Recce done, we hole up in a hotel. Some of us are checked in under fake names, I can’t work out whether that’s for security, or because we’re all enjoying the cloak and dagger. When I go to check in, I forget my fake name. I’m not very good at this.

The hotel is quiet. Great. As we walk across reception we notice lots of champagne glasses. The staff explain: preparations for the massive wedding reception that’s going to be happening tonight. Right. Uh-oh.

To get to the car tomorrow, Jodie will have to walk through this big reception, where the hungover wedding guests will be checking out in the morning. How do we get the new Doctor from her room to the car park, in the costume she’s wearing for the shoot, without anyone spotting? We’re just going to have to style it out.

Sunday morning. Jo Pearce (Social and Digital genius) has gone out early, done a dry run driving from the hotel to the location checking the route. And she comes back alarmed: there’s a Velothon on the route! Some of the roads are closed! Her brilliantly planned shortest possible route from hotel to location won’t work. What’s more, the car will be passing hundreds of cyclists. What if we have to stop at traffic lights? What if somebody looks in and sees the new Doctor? Hopefully Velothon cyclists will have other things to think about. We manage to smuggle the new Doctor into the back of Jo’s car. Hood up in the back, like she’s cosplaying The Matrix, sandwiched between two others.

The week rolls towards the Wimbledon final. Calls are made. Who needs to know the identity of the new Doctor before the rest of the world? Most importantly, Peter Capaldi. We set a time, I call him…

The full story revealing more details about the secrecy that went on, how the shoot happened and who else received those all-important calls is in the new issue of DWM.

Jodie Whittaker wants to encourage the “other half” of the population as the first female Doctor

After over half a century onscreen, Doctor Who is facing one of its biggest changes yet, with Jodie Whittaker set to appear as the first female version of the ever-changing lead character when the series returns this autumn.

And in an exclusive Radio Times interview Whittaker has revealed exactly how much it means to her to be the first woman given the role, hoping that she can inspire female fans as a character they could truly imagine themselves being for the first time.

“Now it isn’t just attainable for half of the population,” Whittakers says in the latest edition of the Radio Times magazine, which is on sale from Tuesday 17th July.

“The other half can be the Doctor as well. Girls will no longer just think, ‘Oh, I could be a companion.’

“Being the first female Doctor and showing children that their heroes in shows don’t always look the same is a huge honour for me.”

Meanwhile, new Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall has revealed that his decision to cast a female Doctor stemmed from a desire to keep the series up-to-date, citing worries that it could be left behind if it didn’t change and innovate.

“I felt the time was right for a female Doctor – I felt the audience were ready for it, the world was ready for it,” he tells Radio Times.

“I think if we hadn’t done it, we would have been behind the world – and Doctor Who has to be out front leading the world, showcasing all the amazing things out there. So it was never a question in my mind. It was time.”

But despite the momentous nature of her casting, Whittaker says she didn’t feel too pressured reinterpreting the Doctor for a new generation.

“The pressure is less for me because I can only do this my way,” she explains.

“All the rules are out the window! That’s what makes it so fun.”

Radio Times’ special Doctor Who preview issue, including interviews with Jodie Whittaker and the new Doctor Who team, is on sale from Tuesday 17thJuly.

DOCTOR WHO STARS WENDY PADBURY, CAROLE ANN FORD AND SOPHIE ALDRED TALK EXCLUSIVELY IN DWM!

Wendy Padbury, who played Second Doctor companion Zoe, recalls how the part she played in Doctor Who was ahead of its time: “She was a strong character for the period. I didn’t quite realise at the time … She thought she was cleverer than the Doctor, brighter. Zoe would never get offended by the Doctor; she knows she’s the brightest and doesn’t see what the problem is. I’ve met two or three people who became astrophysicists because of Zoe, and that’s quite a thing. It’s amazing how the show has that influence. Extraordinary.”

As her character returns for Big Finish’s Class, Sophie Aldred reflects on playing Ace alongside the Seventh Doctor: “I know some Doctor Who assistants weren’t happily served by their characters or by their writers, but I was so well served, at that early age, by everyone around me. I was given a lot of chance for my own input, I was allowed to make my own choices about how to play her, and that was amazing, when I think about being 24 and let loose on one of the most-loved programmes on TV. It gave me a lot of confidence, I think.”

Meanwhile, Carole Ann Ford, who played the First Doctor’s granddaughter Susan, says she would most like to meet… “Jodie Whittaker. I really would like to meet her. Wouldn’t it be fun?! What would I say to her? “Hello grandma!” Jodie’s got a very strong presence. I saw the moment she arrived [in Twice Upon a Time]… The TARDIS is spinning around in space now, but in my time, in the olden days, you could never have the doors of the TARDIS opening in space while it was in flight.
