‘The Abominable Snowmen’ cover art and special features revealed

The cover art and special features of the animated version of the missing Doctor Who adventure, releasing on DVD, Blu-Ray and Steelbook on 5th September 2022, have been revealed.

DVD cover of 'The Abominable Snowmen'

Most of the original 1967 master recordings of the six-part adventure ‘The Abominable Snowmen’ were lost soon after the programme’s original transmission. However, audio-only recordings of all the episodes have survived and have been used here to create six brand new fully animated presentations of this lost classic, as well as the one surviving segment, Episode Two.

In the 17th century, an old Tibetan friend of the Doctor’s reached out and touched the mind of an alien disembodied energy, known only as the Great Intelligence, giving it a conduit to Earth.

300 years later, the Doctor revisits the Himalayas because he wants to return the Holy Ghanta, an ancient relic he was given many centuries ago by the grateful monks and their Master, Padmasambhava, at Det-Sen Monastery. On arriving however, the Doctor is treated as a villain –blamed for a series of brutal murders in the area. Jamie and Victoria meanwhile discover the true culprits –the previously peaceful Yeti that live in seclusion on the mountainside have apparently turned violent.

The Doctor must convince the monks that not only is he not their enemy, but the real foe –and the power controlling the Yeti –is living amongst them.

NOW ON THE BIG SCREEN – IN COLOUR! (AGAIN)

NOW ON THE BIG SCREEN – IN COLOUR! (AGAIN)

Dr. Who and the Daleks (1965) - Backdrops — The Movie ...

At the moment you can already enjoy Doctor Who on TV and on the BBC Sounds app – but this summer, you’ll also be able to enjoy it on the big screen. Well, sort of.

You see, it’s not Doctor Who coming to the multiplex but ‘Dr. Who’ – aka the two ‘Daleks’ movies starring Peter Cushing that were created as big-screen remakes of the BBC sci-fi series in the 1960s (and which made a few changes to the original William Hartnell-starring TV stories).

Now, nearly 60 years after they were first released in 1965 and 1966, Dr. Who and the Daleks and Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. will be back in cinemas.

Remastered and restored in full 4K, they’ll be released theatrically in the UK from 10th July 2022 together with an exciting new trailer for the films, showing off the restoration and sure to intrigue a new generation of fans.

The Cushing movies are to date the only big-screen outing for a Doctor Who adventure (barring a few screenings of the 50th anniversary special in 2013), and this release will give Whovians another chance to see them as they were originally intended.

However, a home release option is also planned to give viewers a chance to watch at home.

According to StudioCanal, both films will be released on 4K UHD Collector’s Editions, steelbooks and digital platforms, with Dr. Who and the Daleks releasing first on 20th June followed by Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. on the 18th July.

The DVD releases will include booklets with a brand new essay, a 32-page Titan mini-book, two new posters and behind-the-scenes features including audio commentaries from cast and Doctor Who experts (including Mark Gatiss, Rob Shearman, Kim Newman, Bernard Cribbins and Gareth Owen) and new featurettes including The Dalek Legacy and Restoring Dr. Who in 4K among others.

In other words, even as the main Doctor Who series is winding down and less regularly on TV ahead of Jodie Whittaker’s regeneration, there’ll be plenty for fans to enjoy in the wider Whoniverse throughout 2022. Hip hip, Who-ray!

Dr. Who and the Daleks and Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. return to UK cinemas on 10th July 2022.

The Abominable Snowmen could be the final animated offering?

Doctor Who: The Abominable Snowmen Podría Ser El último ...

The remaining Doctor Who animated specials, which have been restoring lost episodes for a new generation, have reportedly been scrapped by the BBC.

The latest entries in the series of releases include last year’s The Evil of the Daleks and Galaxy 4, following Patrick Troughton’s Second Doctor and William Hartnell’s First Doctor respectively.

The collaborative project between BBC Studios and BBC America had made much progress towards giving die-hard Whovians a complete library of stories, but that looks as if it might now be cut short.

The Mirror reports that BBC America has pulled its funding from the project, meaning only the one story already in development will be released this year: The Abominable Snowmen (which recently dropped a teaser trailer).

If the report proves to be true, no doubt it will provoke an outcry from Doctor Who fans, for whom the missing episodes are a long-standing frustration.

Certain Doctor Who serials have been left incomplete due to the archiving practices of the ’60s and ’70s, which saw numerous programmes deleted for logistical reasons.

Fortunately, audio of all the missing episodes remains thanks to the diligence of the show’s fans, a number of whom have donated their recordings to the restoration effort.

If BBC America has withdrawn its support of the Doctor Who animated specials, it’s possible that another funder could step in to save the project.

Among the candidates is streaming service BritBox, which has become a haven for Doctor Who fans with its vast library of classic episodes, as well as the animated specials released thus far.

The strongest way to make a case for future entries in the series would be to throw support behind upcoming edition The Abominable Snowmen, which is currently scheduled for release on DVDBlu-ray and Steelbook this year.

Doctor Who animated specials are available to stream on BritBox.

Season 26 will be re-issued in The Collection Blu-Ray standard packaging

Season 26 of Doctor Who: The Collection is the next Blu-ray title to be re-issued in standard packaging after Season 23.

The Collection: Season 26

The Collection offers fans the opportunity to build their own home archive of classic content, and has proved hugely popular with collectors and fans of the TV series. The new standard packaging range is being introduced in response to this success, offering fans a second opportunity to fill gaps in their collection, and enjoy the classic era of Doctor Who.

Releases within the Doctor Who: The Collection Limited Edition Packaging range will continue to offer fans bespoke, premium packaging featuring a beautifully presented box containing the discs and a full-length, premium-printed booklet which includes illustrations and in-depth, behind the scenes insight.

Whilst this new, standard packaging Doctor Who: The Collection range will feature a standard, plastic Blu-ray case inside a slipcase, with a condensed, standard-printed 12-page booklet featuring disc-breakdowns and selected illustrations. The new range will include all of the watchable content and special features included in the original Limited Edition Packaging release.

The Collection Season 26

Season 26 featured four epic adventures traversing a future Britain invaded by inter-dimensional knights, a strange Victorian house haunted by ghosts from Ace’s past, an alien world populated by Cheetah People and a 1940s army camp under siege from monstrous vampires.

With guest stars including Nicholas Courtney (Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart), Anthony Ainley (The Master), Jean Marsh, Nicholas Parsons, Anne Reid, Ian Hogg, Sylvia Syms and comedy duo Hale & Pace, this fondly-remembered set of stories saw the end of an era for Doctor Who and set the stage for its hugely successful revival.

You can pre-order the standard packaging edition of Season 26 from Amazon ahead of its release on the 17th January 2022.

‘The Abominable Snowmen’ to be animated in 2022

The Abominable Snowmen will be released in 2022 on DVD, Blu-ray and as an exclusive Steelbook, filling another gap in missing Doctor Who episodes.

Doctor who - The Abominable Snowmen

Doctor Who: The Abominable Snowmen is a six-part story based on audio recordings of the original episodes. Most of the six-part adventure story was lost soon after the programme’s original transmission in 1967 and only the audio recordings of the episodes survived.

Doctor Who: The Abominable Snowmen follows the Doctor as he returns to the Himalayas 300 years after his first visit to the Holy Ganta, an ancient relic he was given many centuries ago by the grateful monks at Det-Sen Monastery. On arriving, the Doctor is blamed for a series of brutal murders in the area, however companions Jamie McCrimmon and Victoria Waterfield discover the true culprits – the previously peaceful Yeti that live in seclusion on the mountainside have apparently turned violent.

The Doctor must convince the monks that not only is he not their enemy, but the real foe is living amongst them. Their ancient Master, Padmasambhava, is being controlled by an alien entity known only as the Great Intelligence.

The release gives fans the opportunity to enjoy the six new fully animated presentations of this lost classic, which will be released alongside the one surviving segment episode two.

Russell Minton, Executive Producer of The Abominable Snowmen, said:

“We’re delighted to announce Doctor Who: The Abominable Snowmen, something Doctor Who fans have been waiting patiently for over the years. We’re grateful for the surviving audio-only recordings, which we are very lucky to have courtesy of several Doctor Who fans, which have allowed us to create another exciting and action-packed chapter in the Doctor’s story.”

The most-watched episode of Doctor Who ever, which had over 16 million viewers when first shown in 1979 is coming to the big screen in December.

The reason that City of Death is the most-watched episode isn’t because it was co-written by Douglas Adams, or that it stars Julian Glover, nor that it was filmed in Paris — but simply that ITV was on strike at the time, and with the Saturday evening alternative being a choice of a community activity show on BBC2 or Doctor Who on BBC1, it’s not a surprise that Doctor Who won.

The story, City of Death was set in 1970s Paris and is one of those legendary Doctor Who stories, that was at the time panned by critics and Doctor Who fans for its comedy aspect, and has since become a firm favourite.

It was reputedly a very difficult story to film, being done in Paris and seemingly no one checked for French bank holidays meaning they arrived when a lot of filming locations were closed for the holiday. Tom Baker was also surprised to be left alone when in the UK he was more used to being followed around by fans. John Cleese also agreed to a cameo in the show along with Eleanor Bron, as he was filming in the BBC on the same day as they would shoot an indoor scene they needed an extra actor for.

The story was not well received at the time, especially amongst the Doctor Who fans, who are never shy at expressing their opinion about the show, criticising the light-hearted tone of the story. More recently that’s become its main appeal, along with a fairly decent plot.

Tickets to see the show on the big screen will go on sale on the BFI website at 11:30am on Thursday 4th November.

Tickets £15, concessions £12 (Members pay £2 less), restricted to two per booker.

Season 17 announced as the next instalment in The Collection Blu-ray range.

The penultimate season for Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor, with a full season of Lalla Ward as Romana, is the next release to come to Blu-ray with Season 17.

Doctor Who, Dr Who, Season 17, Tom Baker, Lalla Ward, Romana, K9

In 1979, Tom Baker’s Doctor was in full flight. With Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy) as script editor, the series leaned into Baker’s penchant for humour, and paired his Doctor with a regenerated Romana (Lalla Ward) as his traveling companion. Together, they would form one of the most popular Doctor/companion duos of all time.

Although Season 17 was crippled behind-the-scenes by strike action (resulting in the season finale being abandoned part-way through production), it remains a beloved slice of Doctor Who history, featuring the return of Davros and the Daleks, and one of the all-time classic stories, Douglas Adams’ own City Of Death.

Missing adventure ‘Galaxy Four’ to be animated in 2021

Missing adventure ‘Galaxy Four’ to be animated in 2021

Galaxy Four, the mostly-missing serial starring William Hartnell as the First Doctor, has been given the animation treatment.

It will be released on 15th November 2021 on DVD, Blu-ray and as an exclusive Steelbook this year, filling another gap in missing Doctor Who episodes.

Doctor Who - Galaxy 4

Galaxy 4 (alternatively spelled Galaxy Four) is the mostly-missing first serial of the third season of Doctor Who, which originally aired in four weekly episodes from 11th September to 2nd October 1965.

Audio-only recordings of all four episodes have survived from this classic story, and have been used to create a brand new, fully animated story, filling the gaps alongside the original surviving Episode 3 and over five minutes of original footage from the otherwise lost Episode 4.

The Doctor and his travel companions, Vicki and Steven land the TARDIS on a planet which is on the verge of total annihilation, as it drifts too close to the three suns it orbits. Trapped on the planet with them are the Drahvins, a race of warrior women, and the Reptillian Rills.

The Drahvins want to steal the Rills spacehip to escape the planet’s death throes, and enlist the Doctor’s help, which he is forced to give when Maaga, the cunning Drahvin leader, keeps Vicki and Steven as hostage. Even though the Doctor is determined to broker a peace deal between the two sides, Maaga doesn’t trust him, or the Rills…

This two disc release gives fans the opportunity to enjoy the four new animated episodes of Galaxy Four in either colour or black and white. The release will also include:

  • Remastered surviving original footage of Episode 3
  • Remastered surviving clip from Episode 1
  • Telesnap reconstructions of Episodes 1, 2 and 4.
  • Audio commentaries
  • A Making Of documentary
  • Finding Galaxy 4 documentary
  • Photo gallery
  • Production subtitles
