Rani Chandra Goes Beyond Bannerman Road

Rani Chandra Goes Beyond Bannerman Road

Story details are today revealed for the first boxset in the brand-new Doctor Who audio spin-off range, Rani Takes on the World, due for release in April 2023 by Big Finish Productions.

Rani Chandra Goes Beyond Bannerman Road

Life on Bannerman Road was always an adventure for Rani Chandra and her friends. A childhood of mystery and wonder, of meeting aliens, time travellers, lost princes, intergalactic robots and so much more – all alongside Sarah Jane Smith.

Sarah Jane is gone. Childhood ends. Everyone grows up eventually. But the story doesn’t stop there. When Rani and Clyde are reunited, adventure finds them once again – ready and waiting to take on the world!

In three full-cast audio dramas, Rani (Anjli Mohindra), now an award-winning journalist, faces a mysterious alien spaceship, discovers the trust cost of a picture-perfect wedding day, and takes her podcast listeners behind-the-scenes of her most terrifying investigation yet!

The Worlds of Doctor Who – Rani Takes on the World: Beyond Bannerman Road is now available to pre-order for just £19.99 (collector’s edition CD box set + download) or £16.99 (download only), exclusively here.

The three adventures in this boxset are as follows:

Here Today by Joseph Lidster

Years after her adventures with Sarah Jane Smith and friends, Rani Chandra is a successful journalist – she’s brought down a government, and her podcast is making waves. And she’s about to be surprised by a visit from her best friend, Clyde Langer – who has an announcement of his own.

But, tonight, Clyde isn’t the only visitor to Ealing… In the skies above, a flying saucer approaches – and only one person on Earth can stop it destroying London!

Destination: Wedding by James Goss

Rani and Gita Chandra have been invited to a dream wedding on a luxury island resort. But how did Tiff from school end up marrying a film star? And why has she asked all the worst people from her life alongside the Hollywood A-listers?

While Gita samples the canapés and criticises the flower arrangements, Rani senses something amiss… The perfect wedding comes at a price – but who will be paying?

The Witching Tree by Lizzie Hopley

Chasing a podcast award, encouraged by a secret source, Rani investigates a ‘haunted’ restaurant built around a twisted tree. The owners could be faking the spooky activity, but Rani soon realises the tree is not what it seems.

As a terrifying threat to planet Earth is revealed, Clyde and Phoenix are dragged into the fight. Rani is torn between revealing the truth, or keeping a secret too terrifying to broadcast…

Script Editor Matt Fitton said: “For all those youngsters (and not-so-youngsters!) who were avid viewers of The Sarah Jane Adventures, it’s time to catch up with some old friends and see what they’ve been up to.

“Rani has of course followed in Sarah Jane‘s footsteps, with a successful journalistic career of her own. But when she and Clyde meet up for the first time in a while, there are surprises in store. Not least of which is the total destruction of Ealing!

“Then Rani and her mum are off to a wedding and Gita is most disappointed that it’s not Rani’s! An old school friend seems to have turned her life around and brought her friends to a paradise island resort, but what is it costing?

“Finally, we go behind the scenes on one of Rani’s investigative podcasts. But her friend and producer Samira is worried when Rani gets too involved in the story of a witching tree, with a malign influence over those who come into contact with it. Secrets will be revealed in an explosive finale!”

ME & HIM & WHO

ME & HIM & WHO

John Nathan-Turner presided over three distinct eras of classic Doctor Who, as the producer incarnate.

But his ability to juggle budgets, actors, and egos brought about his perceived downfall as he struggled to channel his talents after the BBC cancelled the show in 1989.

With his partner, Gary, unwell with cancer, and his own health sliding downhill due to drink, this is the story of the final three acts of John Nathan-Turner’s life as he attempts to write a ‘tell-all’ autobiography of his time on the show that came to define him.

Written by Stephen Wyatt, who knew them both, and performed with relish by Christopher Guard and Peter Noble, this is a waspish and witty tragedy of two men who loved and alienated so many others, including each other.

Duration: 1 hour 8 minutes

ME & HIM & WHO

He was the youngest Producer of Doctor Who. Or was he?

As he, himself, said, ‘Never let the facts get in the way of a good story’.

His name was John Nathan-Turner and, having worked bis way up the Doctor Who career ladder via since 1969, he took over as producer ten years later and set about putting his highly stylised mark on it.

Not only did he cast three Doctors – Peter Davison’s Fifth, Colin Baker’s Sixth, and Sylvester McCoy’s Seventh – but he also cast a whole host of memorable companions to go with them.

In fact, the BBC’s finale of Jodie Whittaker’s time as the Thirteenth Doctor, became somewhat of a celebration of those eras that John Nathan-Turner produced. Not only featuring the return of the Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Doctor, but also sizeable roles for Ace (Sophie Aldred) and Tegan (Janet Fielding) with a cameo from Mel (Bonnie Langford).

However, John Nathan-Turner became so synonymous with the television show, because of his ability to court the press and placate the fans, that he delayed moving on until it was too late.

When the show was cancelled in 1989, he was left out in the wilderness, struggling to channel his flamboyance into anything else, and with the nasty side of the fan base turning against him and his decade-long tenure on the series.

Towards the end of his life, he tried to write his autobiography but always fell at the final hurdle, whether it was because of his partner, Gary Downie’s cancer, or his own drink-related illness, or just a reluctance to bite the BBC hand that once fed him.

In his final few years, before passing away at the young age of 54, his relationship with friends became toxic because of his partner’s wicked turn of phrase and no holds barred approach to saying what he thought. We find them, both supporting each other and belittling each other in what appeared to be a love/hate relationship but was in fact an enduring and endearing romance.

In a sometimes bleakly comic tale, we see this two-man support network crumble and be rebuilt, with the desire always to be back in the limelight and put on a show. Any show. But the show we hear is the backstage gossip of a fading producer who’s still looking for his final Norma Desmond-esque close-up.

Christopher Eccleston talks 60th anniversary audio drama

Christopher Eccleston talks 60th anniversary audio drama

Why Christopher Eccleston's 'Doctor Who' return is "fantastic" news ...

Christopher Eccleston has confirmed his involvement in Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary celebrations, as he has recorded a brand-new audio drama for the occasion.

Eccleston, who played the Ninth Doctor in 2005, was announced to be reprising his role for Big Finish audio dramas in 2020, with The Ninth Doctor Adventures then confirmed to be returning for a second series in September 2021.

However, Eccleston has also now confirmed a 60th anniversary special, saying at a fan event:

“I’ve recorded something very special for the 60th anniversary. And for me it was all about working with this incredible actor and incredibly human being called David Warner.

“I think the 60th is my favourite and you’re gonna have to wait, but it’s gonna be worth the wait, because David Warner is extraordinary. And if any actor should have been the Doctor, it would have been David.”

Eccleston has previously said it’s “very doubtful” that he’ll return to the TV version of Doctor Who so it’s perhaps unsurprising that his involvement in the 60th anniversary looks set to be strictly in audio.

David Warner, Eccleston’s co-star in the 60th anniversary audio drama, has appeared in Doctor Who a number of times over the years, both on TV and in audio – for instance, he appeared in Eleventh Doctor episode Cold War, playing Professor Grisenko.

About this release

“They are hostile, these Sensorites, but in the strangest possible way…”

Demon Records presents a narrated TV soundtrack from the very first series of Doctor Who, starring William Hartnell as the Doctor.

The TARDIS lands on board a spaceship, in orbit around a planet known as the Sense-Sphere. The Doctor and his companions learn that the human crew have been imprisoned on their craft by the Sensorites, who blame them for the introduction of a fatal disease. When the Sensorites steal the TARDIS lock, the travellers are forced to go with the aliens to their planet and attempt to broker peace between the races. But many dangers lie ahead…

Presented across 3 x 140g Sense-Sphere marble vinyl discs, this 1964 TV adventure is narrated by William Russell, who also plays Ian Chesterton. The supporting cast includes Jacqueline Hill as Barbara and Carole Ann Ford as Susan, with Stephen Dartnell, Ilona Rodgers and Lorne Cossette. Incidental music is composed by Norman Kay, and the familiar strains of the Doctor Who theme are courtesy of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

An embossed, frameable art print accompanies the coloured vinyl LPs, presented in individual pockets which, when placed in order, reveal a double-sided composite illustration. An accompanying booklet supplies cast and credits, and inner bags featuring complete episode billings.

Jo Martin and Sacha Dhawan enter the world of audio

Jo Martin and Sacha Dhawan enter the world of audio

Jo Martin and Sacha Dhawan enter the world of audio in brand-new audio dramas.

Big Finish Productions today announces a brand-new series of adventures for the Fugitive Doctor as played by actress Jo Martin and a brand-new series of full-cast audio dramas starring Sacha Dhawan as the Master.

The Fugitive Doctor Adventures

The Fugitive Doctor Adventures

First revealed on screen in the 2020 Doctor Who episode, FUGITIVE OF THE JUDOON, the Fugitive Doctor is a previously unseen incarnation of the Doctor who quickly established herself as a popular character with viewers. Now she’s back, as Jo Martin stars in six exciting new full-cast audio dramas, due to be released across two box sets.

“Big Finish do amazing work – they are a vital part of the fandom. I’m over the moon to be joining this iconic show. I can’t wait to see what stories they have in store for the Fugitive Doctor.”

Jo Martin THE FUGITIVE DOCTOR

Story details, writers and additional guest cast are being kept under wraps at present but Doctor Who fans worldwide can now pre-order both volumes, which are available in two formats – collector’s edition CD box sets or digital downloads – exclusively from the Big Finish website.

Big Finish Chairman, Jason Haigh-Ellery said: “I first met Jo Martin at a Doctor Who convention in February of this year, where she wowed the crowds with her enthusiasm for the programme and the role of the Fugitive Doctor.

“Her excitement was palpable – Jo obviously loves the role and we are so excited to create new adventures for her to star in. As the Fugitive Doctor herself once said, ‘You’re going to love this…’”

Producer David Richardson added: “What a privilege to be producing THE FUGITIVE DOCTOR ADVENTURES. There’s a whole era to explore in these stories that follow on from FUGITIVE OF THE JUDOON, and I can’t wait to start work with the gloriously talented and charismatic Jo Martin!”

Each of the two volumes in DOCTOR WHO – THE FUGITIVE DOCTOR ADVENTURES will be released as a 3-disc collector’s edition box set or download containing three brand-new full cast audio adventures, plus a selection of behind-the-scenes extras.

THE FUGITIVE DOCTOR ADVENTURES marks the first in a range of spin-offs from the Thirteenth Doctor’s era of Doctor Who at Big Finish, with more new series to follow…

Call Me Master

Call Me Master

Hard on the heels of the announcement of Big Finish’s new THE FUGITIVE DOCTOR ADVENTURES comes news of another spin-off Doctor Who series, CALL ME MASTER.

Sacha Dhawan, who has played the latest incarnation of the Master on TV since 2020 and is due to appear in the Thirteenth Doctor’s final story later this year, will reprise the role in six new adventures on audio.

“I absolutely adore working with the fantastic team at Big Finish. So, when they asked me to play the Master in his own series, it was an offer I couldn’t refuse! The Master is such a joy to play on so many levels! I can’t wait to see what he’s going to be getting up to without the Doctor around to hold him back! Hold onto your seats, folks…!”

Sacha Dhawan THE MASTER

Big Finish Chairman, Jason Haigh-Ellery added: “Sacha Dhawan is already part of the family at Big Finish, having guest-starred in a number of Doctor Who and Torchwood audio dramas since 2014.

“Sacha’s enthusiasm for the Master knows no bounds – we are so excited to work with him and his rather unhinged alter ego at Big Finish.  It’s going to be a hell of a ride!”

Producer Heather Challands agreed: “Sacha’s Master was iconic from the moment he revealed himself to the audience. His performance has such charisma, such madness and can turn on a dime.

“I’m beyond thrilled and honoured to be the producer that gets to bring this incarnation of the Master to Big Finish listeners. It’s going to be very fun getting to peel back the layers and find out just what makes this Master tick…”

Each of the two volumes in CALL ME MASTER will be released as a 3-disc collector’s edition box set or download containing three brand-new full cast audio adventures, plus a selection of behind-the-scenes extras. Both volumes are available now to pre-order as a collector’s edition CD box set or digital download, exclusively from the Big Finish website.

The Fugitive Doctor Adventures and Call Me Master are now available to pre-order exclusively on the Big Finish website.
