Paul McGann to star in special live recording of Big Finish’s Eighth Doctor Adventures – UPDATED!

Celebrate 25 years of Big Finish’s Doctor Who audio dramas with a live recording of new Eighth Doctor adventure ‘The Stuff of Legend’.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of licensed Doctor Who audio dramas, Big Finish Theatre, in partnership with BBC Studios, Fourth Wall Live and AEG, is proud to announce a unique full-cast live recording event, taking place at Cadogan Hall, London on Saturday 14 September 2024.

For the very first time, Doctor Who fans will be able to watch an all-star cast take to the stage to perform a brand-new audio play, THE STUFF OF LEGEND, by Robert Valentine.

Leading the cast is Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor and India Fisher as his indomitable companion Charley Pollard. They’ll be joined onstage by Alex Macqueen as the Master alongside Nicholas Briggs, who voices the Doctor’s unstoppable arch-enemy, the Daleks.

Something is afoot in the lonely Cornish village of Merrymaid Bay. Rumours of dead men working in the tin mines have sent a chill through the community, and it’s up to the Doctor and Charley to get to the bottom of the mystery.

Can the legends of the Bucca that haunts the mines be true? And just what awesome power do the Doctor’s greatest enemies – the Daleks! – threaten to unleash upon the universe?

Big Finish executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery said:

“25 years? It feels like 25 seconds! Producing the audio adventures of Doctor Who has been such a joy that two and a half decades has flown by – almost as if we have all been in the time vortex with the Doctor.

“We’ve enjoyed ourselves so much producing thousands of hours of audio drama adventures – and now we have the chance to show fans of the series how the audio productions are made, with a new live performance – the first time Doctor Who has been performed live on stage since 1989.”

Dominic Walker, Global Business Director at BBC Studios, added:

“After 25 years of working with Big Finish on the Doctor Who audio adventures, BBC Studios is excited to now be bringing a live version to the stage. THE STUFF OF LEGEND is a fitting celebration and I am delighted that fans will be able to witness the recording of such a momentous anniversary story up close and personal.”

Cadogan Hall has limited capacity so fans are advised to book quickly to avoid disappointment.

Alongside the live stage show recording, a full-cast studio production of DOCTOR WHO: THE STUFF OF LEGEND will be released at bigfinish.com on 14 September 2024. This will also be available to purchase as a collector’s edition CD at the event.

Tickets are available to order from Friday 5th July at doctorwhoaudiolive.com.

Doctor Who fans hoping to get tickets for the upcoming live recording of The Stuff of Legend with Paul McGann are in luck – as two new dates have just been announced by Big Finish.

Additional performances of the full-cast live recording event have been added at 2:30pm and 6:30pm on Sunday 15th September 2024, with fans urged to book quickly to avoid disappointment.

The event – which is being held at London’s Cadogan Hall – will see an all-star cast led by McGann as the Eighth Doctor take to the stage to perform the audio drama live.

That cast also includes India Fisher as companion Charley Pollard, Alex Macqueen as the Master and Nicholas Briggs as the Daleks, and the official synopsis teases: “Something is afoot in the lonely Cornish village of Merrymaid Bay.

“Rumours of dead men working in the tin mines have sent a chill through the community, and it’s up to the Doctor and Charley to get to the bottom of the mystery.”

It continues:

“Can the legends of the Bucca that haunts the mines be true? And just what awesome power do the Doctor’s greatest enemies – the Daleks! – threaten to unleash upon the universe?”

If you’re looking to get your hands on some tickets, they’re available to order on the Doctor Who Audio Adventures Live website from 10am on Wednesday 31st July, with prices beginning at £18.

“Taking a Big Finish Doctor Who audio drama to the stage is something we’ve always wanted to do, and now it’s finally happening,” McGann said of the event.

“Raise the curtain, lower the house lights, and start playing the theme. It’s time to step on board the TARDIS and set off on a brand new adventure.”

Fisher added: “I love playing Charley, and she’s been part of my life for over two decades. Paul and I have shared so many amazing adventures, but always from a sound booth.

“I’m really excited to be performing in front of a live audience. It’s going to take it to a whole new level. It’ll be electric, I can’t wait.”

Meanwhile, Doctor Who brand director Vanessa Hamilton said that she was “delighted that the response to Doctor Who Audio Live has been so positive, and that we are able to provide additional opportunities to fans to watch an all-star cast take to the stage”.

The full studio production of Doctor Who: The Stuff of Legend will be released on 14th September 2024. Big Finish listeners can pre-order this adventure now for just £15.99 (collector’s edition double CD + download) or £12.99 (download only) at bigfinish.com. The collector’s edition CD will also be available to purchase at the event.

Doctor Who: Pest Control

“There goes my TARDIS!”

Demon Records celebrates David Tennant and Catherine Tate’s partnership as the Doctor and Donna with two audio exclusive stories on vinyl, read by the actors themselves.

In PEST CONTROL, read by David Tennant, the Doctor and Donna face monstrous insects and a ruthless robot exterminator when the TARDIS is lost in battle on a distant planet. The Doctor sets off in pursuit of his craft, while Donna finds herself accepting a commission in the Pioneer Corps. Something is transforming soldiers into monstrous beetles and she could be the next victim.

In THE FOREVER TRAP, read by Catherine Tate, the duo find themselves imprisoned in a complex of luxury apartments in space, and neighbours to a terrifying assortment of aliens. Deadly mobs wage battle in the corridors and on the stairwells, and the travellers must cross their paths as they search for the ultimate authority. Who, or what, lies at the heart of the Edifice?

Doctor Who: Pest Control

This stunning box set, with an illustrated lift off lid, features 6 x 140g vinyl LPs three in Transparent Red and three in Transparent Yellow each housed in a unique inner sleeve. A four page booklet features sleeve notes by authors Peter Anghelides and Dan Abnett, who reflect on the process of writing for the Tenth Doctor and Donna, and how they regard the stories 17 years later.

Now for the first time on vinyl, accompanied by original sound design and Murray Gold’s Series 4 arrangement of the familiar theme music, these two high octane adventures are a reminder of the excitement, humour and magical wonder of Doctor Who.

Children of the Circus

Children of the Circus

(from left to right, Toyah Willcox, Ian Kubiak, Christopher Guard, Barnaby Eaton-Jones, Dee Sadler, Kenton Hall, and Sophie Aldred)

Once upon a time, there was a circus. A Psychic Circus, to be precise. A glorious haven for the misfits of the universe.

But then, as is so often the way, it was hijacked by a trio of malevolent Gods.  Things grew unpleasant.

Now, years later, the Gods are gone, but the scars of those who survived the Circus remain. After all, you can’t change the past.  Unless you’re the Children of the Circus… and you’re willing to sing.

Based on Doctor Who’s The Greatest Show in the Galaxy by Stephen WyattChildren of the Circus is a brand-new, original, musical play on audio from AUK Studios; written by Kenton Hall (with songs by Christopher Guard) and based on an idea by Barnaby Eaton-Jones.

Starring Christopher Guard as Bellboy, Dee Sadler as Flowerchild and Ella, Sophie Aldred as Captain Gren and AJ, Toyah Willcox as The Band of Infinite Harmony, Ian Reddington as Delios and the Chief Clown, and Sylvester McCoy as the High Poet.

With Daisy Dunlop, Verity White, Kim Jones, Kenton Hall, Barnaby Eaton-Jones and Ian Kubiak.

Special guest appearances by Ricco Ross as The Ringmaster, Jessica Martin as Mags, Chris Jury as Deadbeat, Deborah Manship as Morgana, Gian Sammarco as Whizz Kid, Daniel Peacock as Nord, and Dean Hollingsworth as the Bus Conductor and Station Announcer.

Produced and directed by Barnaby Eaton-Jones, for AUK Studios.

Ever since producer/director Barnaby Eaton-Jones saw the original broadcast of The Greatest Show in the Galaxy, he was fascinated by the world that Stephen Wyatt had created…

“There was such a wild mix of horror, science fiction, music, and fantasy, that it blew my adolescent mind; with images and characters forever stuck in my head. I wanted to revisit some of the characters and introduce new ones. With the permission of Stephen Wyatt (who came up with the title for this new production), and the help of writer Kenton Hall and actor/musician Christopher Guard, we were able to create something rather unique in the audio medium.”

Kenton Hall himself says:

Like most swinging, modern people, I receive a daily deluge of emails that begin with the fateful words “would you be interested in…” As a result, I have developed a tendency to give them, at best, a brief, withering glare.

In this case, however, it read “would I be interested in playing in the sandbox of Stephen Wyatt’s marvellous ‘The Greatest Show in the Galaxy’?”

Does the lesser spotted gumblejack smell faintly of cinnamon?

Spoiler: the answer to both questions is yes.”

Songwriter, Christopher Guard, who played Bellboy in the original TV serial, added…

“As with all the best things in life, I don’t remember quite how or when it began. I think I’d sent some of my songs – recent and ancient – to Barnaby just as he was dreaming up a sequel to ‘The Greatest Show in the Galaxy’. It was more a shooting star than a light bulb moment. Irresistible synchronicity had struck, and ‘Children of the Circus’ was a THING!

It was just a question of time. Or timelessness.

Stephen Wyatt blessed us, Kenton Hall seized his cosmic pen, and the rest is mystery. Unravelled. With music.

How amazing to act and sing with so many of the original cast, to slip into Bellboy’s loons once more, and to travel seamlessly beyond our wildest dreams.”

Returning as his co-star, Dee Sadler (who played Bellboy’s partner, Flowerchild), got to not only play her original role but a completely new one as well…

“What a complete joy and a privilege it was to be reunited with everyone again after a mere 35 years, and on such a brilliant, funky script, too.

Nothing much had changed between us in the interim and the chemistry was still evident. Playing opposite Bellboy again, as Flowerchild (as well as her mysteriously connected Ella) was pretty special. More than!”

And it wouldn’t be a proper sequel without the return of Sylvester McCoy (the Seventh Doctor) and Sophie Aldred (who played the Doctor’s travelling companion, Ace). So, they’re here. But not as you’d expect. Sylvester gives us High Poet; all befuddled charm and with a whisper of duplicity and danger. Sophie gives us two magnificently different characters in the form of Captain Gren (the gruff owner of a Time Ship) and AJ (a sentient piece of rust, who navigates the Time Ship).

(Sylvester McCoy, with AUK Studios CEO, Paul Andrews)

Sylvester himself sums it up rather beautifully…

‘To return to the worlds of Stephen Wyatt’s imagination, but as a wholly new character called the High Poet, means I get to be involved with the Psychic Circus rather than fighting against it! As a lover of the circus myself, juggling this new role was a joy (though I’m sad I didn’t get to play the spoons).

What fun to be reunited with all the wonderful cast from ‘The Greatest Show in the Galaxy’ again, 35 years later, and I hope you’ll all enjoy this time-sliding, sidestepping sequel from Barnaby Eaton-Jones and his bunch of clowns!”

Producer and director, Barnaby Eaton-Jones, was delighted to reunite the entire surviving voice cast of The Greatest Show in the Galaxy

“The fact that everyone who was asked, without fail, did their best to accommodate my requests for a cameo, shows the love that they hold this Doctor Who serial in. Even with Ricco Ross living in America and being a big star there, and Gian Sammarco retiring form showbusiness 30 years ago, nobody refused, and everyone was delighted to be reuniting.”

Joining the cast in a major role was 1980’s icon (singer/actress/songwriter), Toyah Willcox. It’s long been known she was a fan of Doctor Who, as she appeared in Kevin Jon Davies’ acclaimed documentary 30 Years in the TARDIS, but to get her to create a multi-voiced role as The Band of Infinite Harmony (and get her own solo song, which can heard in full after the end credits as a bonus extra track) was something she clearly relished…

“At last, I get to play all four members of the band and still have the last say…. love it. Seriously it was wonderful to play THE BAND and equally wonderful to hear this rather fab story unfold, a rock and roll odyssey of comic proportions.”

(Christopher Guard, Barnaby Eaton-Jones, and Toyah Willcox – at Yellow Shark Studios)

Product description

Doctor Who – Revenge Of The Cybermen was the season 12 finale first broadcast on April 19th 1975.

As with so much television music of the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s, the original master tapes of Carey Blyton’s score for Revenge of the Cybermen were not retained. The only surviving copy is a set of four 7″, 7.5ips “composer’s copy” domestic 1/4-inch tape. It is from those digital transfers that this release is taken. Sadly, and to Carey’s obvious and understandable disappointment, the completed music did not meet with the complete approval of the production team, and much of it was not used. Peter Howell of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop added some electronic embellishments and arranged some additional cues for parts two and three but some of that was also left on the proverbial cutting room floor.

For this presentation, Carey’s original score is presented (and heard here for the first time) as written. This is followed by the additional, alternative, and “enhanced” cues, all of which were also on Carey Blyton’s tapes

“This is undoubtedly one of the most distinctive, mysterious, misunderstood, and even controversial scores in Doctor Who history, and it delights me to finally bring it, complete, to your ears!”

Mark Ayres – compiler and producer

Product description

‘Doctor Who – Time And The Rani’ was the opening serial of season 24, first broadcast on September 7th, 1987. It marked the debut of Sylvester McCoy and featured CGI, very much in a basic form as the technology was still in development. It also debuted a new computer animated opening title sequence with a new synthesiser version of the theme created by Keff McCulloch.

The composer was invited to create incidental music for the series and became a regular member of the team also writing music for Delta And The Bannerman, Paradise Towers, Remembrance Of The Daleks, Silver Nemesis, Battlefield, Dimensions In Time and Shada.

Keff, Dominic Glynn and Mark Ayres were the composers for the last three years of Doctor Who on its original run that ended in 1989, the latter compiling and producing this release.

From the remote nodes of a transmat network, to solving crimes at a spaceship service station, or helping a friend climb the political ladder – sometimes the journey is more interesting, and more dangerous, than the destination…
