‘Doctor Who’ spin-off ‘Class’ will air on BBC One after online debut
The new eight-part Doctor Who spin-off, created by YA author Patrick Ness, began filming in Cardiff in April and will premiere on BBC Three this autumn.
BBC Three became an online-only channel earlier this year, meaning that viewers need an internet connection to watch the channel’s content on BBC iPlayer.
However, Class writer Patrick Ness has previously confirmed plans for the show to air on BBC One following its debut on BBC Three.
He revealed: “The plan is, Class airs on BBC3 online, then on BBC1.
Class will air in the US on BBC America later this year.
The BBC’s synopsis for Class reads: “Like all sixth formers, these four Coal Hill School students have hidden secrets and desires. They are facing their own worst fears, navigating a life of friends, parents, school work, sex, sorrow – and possibly the end of existence.
“Coal Hill School has been a part of the Doctor Who Universe since the very beginning, but that has come at a price. All the time travelling over the years has caused the very walls of space and time to become thin. There’s something pressing in on the other side, something waiting for its chance to kill everyone and everything, to bring us all into Shadow.
“Fear is coming, tragedy is coming, war is coming. Prepare yourselves, Class is coming.”
The show’s cast includes Greg Austin, Fady Elsayed, Sophie Hopkins and Vivian Oparah as four Sixth Formers, with Katherine Kelly (Coronation Street) playing a “powerful” teacher at Coal Hill School and Doctor Who actor Nigel Betts reprising the role of Mr Armitage.
Peter Capaldi is also believe to have filmed a cameo role in Class as the Doctor.
