The Stuff of Legend – The Live Show

The Stuff of Legend – The Live Show
The Stuff of Legend – The Live Show

On 14 and 15 September, Doctor Who fans were treated to a live performance of a brand-new story, The Stuff of Legend by Robert Valentine, onstage at London’s Cadogan Hall.

Leading the cast were Paul McGann as the Doctor and India Fisher as his original audio companion, Charley Pollard. In a quiet Cornish mining town in 1963, the time travellers faced off against two of their most iconic enemies – the Master (Alex Macqueen) and the Daleks (Nicholas Briggs).

The stage show also featured live foley effects and audience participation, with the audience providing the voices of the Robomen enslaved by the Daleks. All of this has been captured on the official recordings of the performances, and this December, The Stuff of Legend – The Live Show will be available to own.

Doctor Who: The Stuff of Legend – The Live Show can now be pre-ordered as a collector’s edition double CD plus slipcase (+ download for just £15.99) or as a digital download only (for just £12.99), exclusively here.

Additionally, there are a number of limited-edition tiers, which come with The Stuff of Legend merchandise:

  • Silver (limited to 450 copies): The Stuff of Legend – The Live Show on collector’s edition CD, plus a T-shirt, for £40.99.
  • Gold (limited to 100 copies): The Stuff of Legend – The Live Show on collector’s edition CD, plus a T-shirt and a brochure, for £49.99.
  • Platinum (limited to 100 copies): The Stuff of Legend – The Live Show on collector’s edition CD, plus a T-shirt, brochure and tote bag, for £62.99.

Something is afoot in the lonely Cornish village of Merrymaid Bay. Rumours of dead men working in the tin mines have sent a chill through the community, and it’s up to the Doctor and Charley to get to the bottom of the mystery.

Can the legends of the Bucca that haunts the mines be true? And just what awesome power do the Doctor’s greatest enemies – the Daleks! – threaten to unleash upon the universe?

The cast list also includes Carolyn Seymour as Old Emily and the Light Bucca, Nisha Nayar as Emily Barnfather, Jason Forbes as Captain Montgomerie Césaire, Barnaby Edwards as Jago Penrose and Foley, and Gabriel Clark as Jory, Robomen and the Dark Bucca.

Big Finish executive producer, and voice of the Daleks, Nicholas Briggs said:

“There was a real electricity in the room during these performances. The reception we got was the sort of thing that could really go to your head – proper rock star welcomes! And then from the moment the shows started, the audience were riveted, picking up on every little nuance. It made the whole thing such a joy.

“I remember, as a teenager, being delighted with live recordings of Monty Python stage shows. There’s something really compelling about hearing a live performance, with audience reactions and performers pitching it up for a large, appreciative crowd. The enthusiasm in the auditorium somehow transmits through the recording, making you part of something joyous.

“I’ve had a listen to the live recordings of The Stuff of Legend, and that’s exactly what happens here. For those who attended, it’ll be a great way to relive the memories, and for those who couldn’t get to see the show onstage, this will capture so much of the atmosphere and sense of occasion.”

Director Barnaby Edwards added:

“Directing a Doctor Who audio adventure is always fun, but it’s done without any feedback from the listener. Not so The Stuff of Legend live, where the reactions of the audience dictated the pace and delivery of each performance. The live recording is a beast of a very different colour from the studio version: new cast members, new lines, new action, new live sound effects, new feel. I can’t wait for people to hear it!”

Praise for the live performances of The Stuff of Legend

“There are Daleks, the Master, lots of jokes and plenty of thrills, chases, explosions and exterminations… I’m gripped from start to finish.” – Who Review

“While it was doubtless fun to watch, the story works well as an audio drama in its own right. If you’re a fan of the Eighth Doctor and Charley’s exploits, or just a good, solid Doctor Who story, this one’s for you.” – Cultbox

“Perfect to sum up all that is great and good about the show.” – Bleeding Cool

Doctor Who: The Stuff of Legend – The Live Show is now available to pre-order as a collector’s edition double CD plus slipcase (+ download for just £15.99) or as a digital download only (for just £12.99), exclusively here.

All the above prices include the special pre-order discount and are subject to change after general release.

Please note that Big Finish is currently operating a digital-first release schedule. The mail-out of collector’s edition CDs may be delayed due to factors beyond our control, but all purchases of this release unlock a digital copy that can be immediately downloaded or played on the Big Finish app from the release date.

Dr Who meets The Scorpion

Dr Who meets The Scorpion

A Doctor Who fan feature film described as a ‘passionate tribute to the classic ’70s and ’80s series’ is nearing completion in Cardiff using local amateur actors and crew.

The movie titled ‘Dr Who meets The Scorpion’ is to be released as a non-profit film on YouTube purely for the pleasure of the fans to watch.

As of last week – only three scenes of the 70 minute film are left to shoot.

Nation Cymru spoke to the multi-talented man behind the movie, Phillip Roy – the film’s writer, producer, director, production designer, and prop maker – as well as the actor taking on the role of the famed Timelord. (He also jokes he makes all the sandwiches for lunch!)

What is the back story to the project and how did it come about?
I’ve been a Doctor Who fan since I was 3 watching Jon Pertwee in the role. I self tape auditioned at home in 2019 for the Doctor role in a fan film but never heard back from them. So it spurred me on to write and produce my own film. Covid put things back a bit but we started filming last July. Just the odd weekends filming here and there but we now have just three scenes left to film.

Was it your intention to stay faithful to the character of Doctor Who and his assistants?
You have to do your own version of The Doctor rather than try and copy Tom Baker or David Tennant but the character stays true and I try to give a nod to some of the previous Doctors with gestures and things they might say. The companion role has changed over the years. You can’t just have the character there to scream. Luckily Mandy Rose is a great actor and brings the character of Jennie to life. Yes, she gets scared but she gets The Doctor out of some difficult scrapes!

Are there any copyright implications in making something like this and how would you circumnavigate them?
There are literally hundreds of Dr Who fan films out there on Youtube. As well as Star Trek, Star Wars, James Bonds fan films. As long as you don’t try to make money out of something like Doctor Who that belongs to the BBC there has never been a problem. If you put it out on Youtube for free purely for the enjoyment of the fans then I don’t think the BBC is concerned. I’m not trying to compete with the BBC series and wouldn’t want to. How could we on our tiny budget? We’re trying to give a flavour of the 70s/80s series with a bit of the Peter Cushing Dalek movies thrown in as well. It’s my homage to the days of the classic series where the ingenuity of the designers faced with a tight budget produced some iconic sets and monsters out of nothing. Just like I’m having to do! That’s always been the charm of the classic series for me.

What is the plotline of Dr Who meets The Scorpion without giving away spoilers obviously?
The Doctor bumps into Jennie in a deserted warehouse at night, both there to find out more about the mysterious Scorpion company. They start to unravel a fiendish plot by the arch villain Scorpion and his right hand man Taylor which takes them from Earth to a planet far, far away! Thrills, spills, monsters, peril and adventure await them…and we couldn’t resist including the iconic Daleks as well. Guys with their own Daleks came from all Wales and Somerset to film with us.

Is your outfit all from your own wardrobe?
Yes, anyone who knows me won’t be surprised by my wardrobe in the film. I’ve always loved that 70s leather jacket look and raided my closet to come up with my Doctor’s outfit. For a man that can travel in his Tardis from year zero to the end of time, no clothes are retro, period or futuristic to him. It’s just what he thinks suits their character. Someone described the look as a bit of a Dennis Waterman Doctor in his Sweeney days which I loved. Although I won’t be chain smoking, quaffing Whisky at the Tardis controls and punching out villains!

What have been the biggest obstacles in making the film?
The biggest obstacle is my budget and also availability of the cast and crew which is why we film a couple of days on the weekend every couple of months. We can’t set aside a month of shooting as we all have day jobs and so far I’ve been financing the film out of my own pocket. Which means I have to save up a bit before we can continue. Through great kindness we’ve been given permission to film in a production facility and warehouse in Ely which has given our film some superb production values. But my budget is definitely more ‘Ely-wood’ than Hollywood!

Where did you find the rest of the cast and crew?
I’ve been so lucky with my cast and crew. As a Cardiff based actor I know a lot of South Wales amateur/semi professional actors and crew having filmed a lot of student films and independent short films and low budget features. We’ve had the same core team on the film since day one. This is my first time directing. I might have a particular shot idea in mind. Richard, our DOP/cameraman will usually better that idea. Because I can’t be behind the camera as well as in front, he sets up wonderful and inventive shots for me as he has more experience. He also puts great effort into lighting the set properly. Lighting is everything.

I take it there’s a certain irony in making this in Cardiff where the TV series is filmed?
I was delighted when Doctor Who was revived in 2005 and even more astonished when I heard they were going to film in my hometown. I’ve spent many a night standing on the sidelines watching location filming to get a glimpse of David Tennant or Catherine Tate. In fact it was Doctor Who that got me into acting and I eventually achieved my dream of working on the show as an ‘Extra’/Background Artist in a few episodes.

My script is also partly set in Cardiff so I could use the famous ‘Cardiff time/space rift’ plot from Doctor Who and Torchwood to get me out some sticky plot holes I was struggling with during the writing process.

When are you ideally hoping to release the film?
We’re looking to get the film out on Youtube for next summer.

WHO KNEW!
Phillip says this is technically his second time playing the Doctor. He actually played the 7th Doctor in portrait stills for the 50th Anniversary story ‘Day of the Doctor alongside Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt’. It doesn’t get much better than that!

BBC Cuts Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor Who Comment “Confirming” a Third Series for the 15th Doctor | Doctor Who TV
BBC Cuts Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor Who Comment “Confirming” a Third Series for the 15th Doctor | Doctor Who TV

When Ncuti Gatwa recorded The Graham Norton Show last Thursday, he delivered what appeared to be good news for Doctor Who fans: his third season as the Time Lord would shoot next year.

Gatwa’s comments were briefed to the press by The Graham Norton Show‘s publicity team on Friday morning, but his quote mysteriously changed when the chat show broadcast on BBC1 later that evening.

Speaking to Norton on the famous red sofa, Gatwa originally revealed:

“We did the second series this year, the Christmas special is coming up, and we are filming a third series next year.”

But when the show aired, this was edited to:

“We finished the second season earlier this year, we’ve got the Christmas episode coming out … at Christmas … But it’s been amazing.”

The Graham Norton Show warns journalists that it is not unusual for certain quotes fail to make the final cut, but the switch led some Whovians to question whether Gatwa’s remarks had been censored by the BBC amid uncertainty over Doctor Who’s future.

The truth is rather more mundane. Speaking with Deadline it was stated that The Graham Norton Show made the edit to liven up Gatwa’s answer and was not obeying a “sinister” request from BBC bosses.

Indeed, the Doctor Who team was not involved in brokering the interview, given the Sex Education star was promoting his appearance in The Importance of Being Earnest at the National Theatre.

The BBC has, however, distanced itself from Gatwa’s remarks, restating that Doctor Who will not be renewed until the actor’s second season has premiered next year on BBC1 and Disney+.

“As we’ve said previously, the decision on season three will be made after season two transmits and as always we don’t comment on speculation,” a spokesperson said. Season 2 will likely launch next spring.

There is said to be some confusion about why Gatwa made the comment, particularly given showrunner Russell T Davies has echoed the BBC’s position about future seasons.

“The decision to commission Season 3 won’t be made until after Season 2 has transmitted. And that’s always been the deal since the start,”

Davies said in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine. The writer has previously said he has started work on Season 3 scripts and that he is “very confident” about a renewal.

The Graham Norton Show incident has provoked another round of questions about Doctor Who’s future, not least a front-page story in The Daily Mirror from Nicola Methven, who is well-sourced on the Bad Wolf and BBC Studios-produced franchise.

Deadline reported in July that Disney is uncertain about whether it will continue to co-produce Doctor Who beyond 2025. The Mouse House’s commitment is critical to budgets, storylines, and casting, meaning its withdrawal could mean major changes to the show.

Liam Keelan, Disney’s SVP of original productions in EMEA, declined to comment on a future greenlight at the Edinburgh TV Festival in August. He did, however, hail Doctor Who as a “really good fit” for Disney+.

Gatwa’s own future on the series is also up in the air. A source told Deadline that “he might not be long for the job” as he explores other roles. His rep has been contacted for comment.

What seems certain is that Doctor Who fans will have to wait until 2027 before a follow-up to next year’s season. It remains to be seen in what form the sci-fi franchise will regenerate.

Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa reveals ‘we’re filming third season’ on The Graham Norton Show.

Recent press reports are stating that Ncuti Gatwa is returning to film a third series of Doctor Who in 2025. However, it appears the situation is not quite so clear-cut.

During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Ncuti Gatwa was widely reported to have confirmed his future involvement, indicating at a third run for his Doctor. However, this part of his comment was notably edited out from the final BBC broadcast, raising questions about the certainty of these plans.

Originally, Ncuti Gatwa was reported as saying:

“It is all going well. We did the second series this year, the Christmas special is coming up, and we are filming a third series next year.”

But in the final broadcast version of the interview, Gatwa said:

“It’s all going well. We finished the second season earlier this year, we’ve got the Christmas episode coming out … at Christmas … But it’s been amazing.”

While fans took his original comment as a clear confirmation of a future series beyond next year, the decision to omit the part about the third series filming suggests that things are still very much up in the air.

Adding to that, Russell T Davies reiterated that no official commission for Series 16—or “Season 3,” as he referred to it—has been made (yet).

“The decision to commission Season 3 won’t be made until after Season 2 has aired,” Davies said in this month’s DWM (released last week). “And that’s always been the arrangement since the start.”

It is entirely likely that there are at least plans for filming and Gatwa is just getting a bit ahead of himself. This all will likely be dependent on the Disney+ deal and their plans with the show after their two seasons have aired as it is far from clear at the moment whether Disney will extend their involvement with Doctor Who beyond their initial two season deal or whether the BBC will look for another partner, perhaps even bringing it back fully in-house, only time will tell!

Ed: Were you in the studio audience for this recording of The Graham Norton Show, can you let us know exactly what was said, if so, we’d love to hear from you!

Original Doctor Who star ponders ’emotional’ return

Original Doctor Who star ponders ’emotional’ return

Carole Ann Ford is the last surviving original cast member of Doctor Who

The last surviving cast member from the very first Doctor Who series said she would like to return to the show as the 60th anniversary of her final appearance approaches.

Carole Ann Ford, from Ilford, played Susan, granddaughter of the Doctor played by William Hartnell when the BBC show started in 1963. The character has been frequently mentioned in the recent series with Ncuti Gatwa.

During an appearance at Luton Comic Con, the actress said she wanted to return although she admitted it “would be very emotional.. very emotional”.

“I don’t know if I could survive the excitement actually, it would be intense beyond all intensity,” she said.

The 84-year-old is the last member of the original cast following the death of William Russell in June.

She said: “It’s not just returning, it would bring back all the memories of William Russell and Jackie and Bill [William Hartnell] and various other people who aren’t with us anymore.

“I might be a little bit overcome and start blubbing.

“I keep being reminded I’m the last one standing and it’s not something I’m happy to hear.”

Sixties City - Doctor Who
Carole Anne Ford (Middle) with Jacqueline Hill (left) and William Russell (right) as the original TARDIS team.

She appeared as the granddaughter of the original Doctor, played by William Hartnell, but was left behind after a showdown with the Daleks set in Bedfordshire and broadcast on 26 December 1964.

At the time, the Doctor promised to return for her, but despite an appearance in the 20th anniversary special The Five Doctors, a story that would address the reunion between the characters is yet to take place.

“He said he’d come back and get me and never did. I’d give him a good telling off if I saw him again,” she said.

“I understand their dilemma, how difficult it must be to write for me. It has been 60 years since I was first in it.

“I’ve met Russell [T Davies] a few times and I absolutely adore him. He is the man that would be the boss man to say yes or no – so hopefully it’s going to be yes.”

Last year the character returned to screens in a newly colourised version of the 1963 episode, The Daleks, which was broadcast on BBC Four to mark the show’s 60th anniversary.

The actress encouraged fans to be vocal in their support of her return if there was any chance of her returning.

In an interview on BBC Three Counties Radio, she hinted that she had had “one or two” conversations about returning in the past.

“I’ve had many conversations about going back, maybe not with the right people, I don’t know,” she added.

When it was suggested her character could be recast, she joked: “They better not, I’d burn the studio down.”

Genesis of the Cybermen

Genesis of the Cybermen

A lost Cybermen story for the Fifth Doctor
Genesis of the Cybermen, due for release in March 2025.

Big Finish’s acclaimed range Doctor Who – The Lost Stories takes ideas proposed during the classic era of the TV show and adapts them into full-cast audio dramas. The next release in the range reveals the origins of one of the Doctor’s greatest enemies – the Genesis of the Cybermen

This story comes from the mind of one of the Cybermen’s original creators – Gerry Davis, the writer who, with Kit Pedler, first devised the Mondasian monsters and went on to write several of their TV stories.

The intended origins of the Cybermen never made it to screen; Davis pitched a story about their creation in the early 1980s, but it was rejected by producer John Nathan-Turner. Doctor Who fans may remember details of this adventure being printed in the 1988 book Cybermen by David Banks.

Now, the story has been adapted by David K Barnes into a full-cast audio drama. The Lost Stories: Genesis of the Cybermen stars Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, alongside Janet FieldingSarah Sutton, and Matthew Waterhouse as his companions Tegan, Nyssa, and Adric, with Nicholas Briggs as the Cybermen.

Doctor Who – The Lost Stories: Genesis of the Cybermen is now available to pre-order as a collector’s edition 2-disc CD (+ download for just £16.99) or download only (for just £13.99)

A King lies dying in his castle. His eldest son Prince Sylvan is an artist with no desire to inherit a kingdom, while Prince Dega toils in his laboratory, dedicated to saving their dying people from extinction. They will all burn unless he succeeds.

When the TARDIS arrives, its crew believe they can help. But this planet is Mondas. And this is the Genesis of the Cybermen…

Producer and director David O’Mahony said:

“The Cybermen have been one of the Doctor’s greatest opponents throughout the ages. They are brutal, uncaring and dedicatedly vicious.

“Gerry Davis’s ideas about their origin never made it onto TV, so it’s a total pleasure to bring this story to life with Peter Davison’s Doctor. Setting it pre-Earthshock gives it the feel of a brilliant prequel to the impending Cybermen stories that we know and love.”

Big Finish listeners can save money by pre-ordering Doctor Who – The Lost Stories: Genesis of the Cybermen together with 2025’s second Doctor Who – The Lost Stories adventure (title TBA, due for release in September 2025), in a multi-buy bundle on collector’s edition CD (+ download for just £32) or download only (for just £26).

All the above prices include the special pre-order discount and are subject to change after general release.

Please note: the collector’s edition double CDs are strictly limited to 2,000 copies and will not be repressed.

Please note that Big Finish is currently operating a digital-first release schedule. The mail-out of collector’s edition CDs may be delayed due to factors beyond our control, but all purchases of this release unlock a digital copy that can be immediately downloaded or played on the Big Finish app from the release date.

Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa has been confirmed for an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, with the actor part of a stacked line-up.

For the episode on Friday October 11, Gatwa will talk about his stint in the TARDIS and his upcoming role on the stage in The Importance of Being Earnest, which gets underway in November.

He’ll be joined on the famous red sofa by Zoe Saldaña, who has appeared in the Marvel, Avatar and Star Trek franchises.

The star, who played Gamora in the Guardians of the Galaxy series, will be joined by her Emilia Pérez co-star Selena Gomez, with the pair chatting about the upcoming musical.

The final celebrity in the line-up will be Miranda Hart, with the comedian set to discuss her life ahead of the release of her memoir, I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest with You.

Gatwa, who has also starred in Sex Education and Barbie, had his first set of adventures as the iconic Time Lord earlier this year, with the series following his journey across space and time with companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson).

One notable aspect of the newest series was the emphasis on costuming, which Gatwa spoke to Digital Spy about earlier this year.

“The Doctor’s travelled throughout time and space. He’s been to a few thrift shops. He’s got a large, large wardrobe. You will see a lot of outfits,” he said.

“Pam Downe is our costume designer. She is incredible. She is a force of nature and just amazing. She would just present us with the most incredible designs and then we get to talk to her and we can choose and obviously we would speak about the episode and what is going to be needed practically but also what makes us look hot. It’s an important part.”
