Matthew Jacobs returns to the world of the Eighth Doctor

Paul McGann stars in the forthcoming full-cast audio drama box set, Deadly Strangers, which includes a story by the writer of his very first adventure, the 1996 Doctor Who TV movie.

The Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) and his companions Charley Pollard (India Fisher) and Lady Audacity Montague (Jaye Griffiths) have three brand-new audio adventures in store in The Eighth Doctor Adventures: Deadly Strangers, due for release in December 2024.

The Doctor, Audacity and Charley visit many times and places, always with the best of intentions. But others have a different agenda.

An alien princess takes an interest in Puccini, a visitor to Iceland causes chaos, and a lethal interloper slips into the dreams of a sleeping population. Some strangers have deadly intent…

The first of the three stories, Puccini and the Doctor, is written by Matthew Jacobs, the screenwriter of 1996’s Doctor Who: The Movie. Jacobs was the first person to write for Paul McGann’s Doctor and this audio drama marks his first time penning any Doctor Who media since then.

In Jacobs’ story, the TARDIS arrives in Milan at the turn of the twentieth century, where the time travellers encounter legendary opera composer, Giacomo Puccini (voiced by Tim McInnerny, known for Blackadder, Game of Thrones, and Doctor Who: Planet of the Ood). But the Doctor’s not the only alien around with an interest in the music of love.

Doctor Who – The Eighth Doctor Adventures: Deadly Strangers is now available to pre-order as a collector’s edition 3-disc CD box set (+ download for just £22.99) or as a digital download only (for just £18.99), exclusively here.

The three new adventures for the Eighth Doctor and his companions are:

Puccini and the Doctor by Matthew Jacobs
Women’s Day Off by Lisa McMullin
The Gloaming by Lauren Mooney & Stewart Pringle

Producer David Richardson said:

“How brilliant to have Matthew Jacobs return to the series to write Puccini and the Doctor – a man so dedicated that he woke up at 4am in Los Angeles to listen in to our studio recordings! He’s given us a lovely and imaginative tale, which feels very much in the spirit of the Eighth Doctor TV movie.”

Matthew Jacobs said:

“This is the first time I’ve written a Doctor Who adventure since 1996. The Doctor is such an integral part of my life, so it’s been fascinating over the years to see it grow and grow. Paul has kept the Doctor alive at Big Finish in a marvellous way and he has become so much more sophisticated as a character than when we were starting.

“I was over the moon when script editor Matt Fitton asked me to put together a story. We discussed that this version of Paul’s Doctor is a bit closer to the TV movie Doctor – inquisitive, not as embittered as he gets through the Time War.

“The idea that stuck out was one where I got to deal with some unfinished business from the TV movie. In the movie, the Doctor says how sad it was that Puccini never got to finish Turandot, and it was the bane of his life towards the end. I wanted to tell a story to do with the nature of how we use music and how we search for love.”

Big Finish listeners can save money by pre-ordering Deadly Strangers in a multi-buy bundle with the previous Eighth Doctor Adventures box set, Echoes, for just £44 (collector’s edition CD + download) or £36 (download only) exclusively here.

All the above prices include the special pre-order discount and are subject to change after general release.

Doctor Who Prom gets BBC release window

Doctor Who Prom gets BBC release window

Doctor Who Returns To The BBC Proms for 2024 season - The Gallifreyan ...

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has announced when the show’s BBC Prom will air on TV.

The musical tribute to the science fiction show will return to the BBC this year for the first time since 2013 to celebrate the iconic score created by composer Murray Gold for modern Doctor Who.

Davies was in the audience as the Doctor Who Prom was filmed at the Royal Albert Hall on Monday (August 27), with Catherine Tate on stage as the official host.

The producer wrote on Instagram:

“The Doctor Who Proms! So much happiness. Joy and laughter and thrills and songs. There was even a twist at the end. It’ll be on your TV at Christmas in the UK! Thank you to everyone.”

The BBC had previously promised that the Doctor Who Prom would be “a brand-new show celebrating the latest adventures of The Doctor”.

“Showcasing Murray Gold’s and Segun Akinola’s epic music for the series performed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Prom features sequences from the series on big screens, spectacular lighting and a host of special guest appearances – and, yes, there will be monsters! A concert like no other in all of space and time,” the BBC promised.

The Doctor Who Prom was, at one time, a semi-regular event, with shows taking place originally from 2008 to 2010. The musical event returned for Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary in 2013, but then it took a long break before this year’s Prom.

It’s an exciting time for Doctor Who fans, as Davies and his production team recently unveiled the guest cast joining Nicola Coughlan in the Christmas special ‘Joy to the World’.

The showrunner has also confirmed several Doctor Who stars will return for the upcoming spinoff series The War Between The Land And The Sea.

Doctor Who airs on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Classic episodes of Doctor Who are available on BBC iPlayer in the UK.

The Disney+ ‘Spotlight’ session at the festival was attended by Disney+’s Senior Manager of Unscripted Content, Gaby Aung; Director of Scripted Content, Lee Mason; and Senior Vice President, Liam Keelan.

Senior Vice President, Liam Keelan said:

“[Doctor Who] is a fabulous series. Obviously, in the UK it’s fully BBC, rightly so. We take rest of world rights. But really, really happy to have it. I think just, you know, the quirkiness of it, the fact that it’s in that sci-fi world and when you think about what Disney offers in other regards, I think it feels like a really good fit to me. I mean, you know, it’s great to have it.”

Last month it was announced the BBC and Disney+ had commissioned new Doctor Who spin-off The War Between The Land And The Sea. Leading the five-part series is Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. The series will also see the return of UNIT alumni Jemma Redgrave and Alexander Devrien.

Catherine Tate to host Doctor Who Proms

Catherine Tate to host Doctor Who Proms

Doctor Who: Why Was Donna Noble So Important?

According to an interview with Doctor Who composer Murray Gold in Radio Times magazine, Catherine Tate is set to host the Doctor Who Proms this coming 26 August at Royal Albert Hall.

“Oh God, she’s great,” Gold said of the Proms host.

Tate was last seen on Doctor Who reprising her role as the Doctor’s companion Donna Noble in three anniversary specials which aired in November 2023.

Gold promised fan-pleasing favourites but the text of the interview also stated, “cues from the recent Ncuti Gatwa series that haven’t been released yet.”

“There’s a lot of new stuff,” Gold revealed to RT. “This isn’t going to be a jukebox musical. People aren’t necessarily coming in already humming the pieces.”

With previous Doctor Who Prom events held in 2008, 2010 and 2013, this year’s Prom will be a brand-new show celebrating the latest adventures of the Doctor and showcasing Murray Gold’s beloved music for the series. The Prom will feature specially arranged pieces from the most recent series starring Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor and Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday and will also include music from the 60th anniversary specials, as well as favourites from Murray Gold’s long association composing for the series. Alongside Murray Gold, the Prom will also be featuring Segun Akinola’s music which was specially created for Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor.

Complete with specially edited sequences from the series shown on big screens around the Royal Albert Hall, audiences can expect appearances from monsters old and new and at least a surprise or two!

The Doctor Who Prom will be at the Royal Albert Hall on Bank Holiday Monday 26 August with two performances at 2.30pm and 7pm, with the later concert broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and available on BBC Sounds for 30 days. It will be audio-described by Timna Fibert and British Sign Language-interpreted.

The Prom has been co-commissioned for television by BBC Arts and BBC Cymru Wales and will be broadcast later this year.

Doctor Who Proms, hosted by Catherine Tate with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, conductor Alastair John King, and soprano Aida Garifullina will have two performances at the Royal Albert Hall Monday 26 August 2024 at 14:30 an 19:00, to be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. The Doctor Who Proms performance will also be available on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer this autumn/winter.

Doctor Who: On Ghost Beach

Doctor Who: On Ghost Beach

by Niel Bushnell

A haunting tale of mystery and adventure for the Fifteenth Doctor and Ruby Sunday!

The TARDIS arrives in County Durham, England, in 1958. Seaham Chemical Beach was once a scene of heavy industry, long since abandoned, but now local residents are having nightmares and seeing apparitions.

It isn’t long before the Doctor and Ruby are affected by the beach’s peculiar atmosphere. As they begin to forget exactly who they are, Ruby hears a distant voice calling her on.

Whose memories are filling the travellers’ heads, and what is the significance of Ghost Beach, in the Sea of Despair, on the planet Farfrom? Even more importantly – who is Reg?

Susan Twist, who played the recurring woman in the BBC TV series, reads this atmospheric original chiller by Niel Bushnell.

Doctor Who: Sting of the Sasquatch

by Darren Jones

A full-throttle adventure in America for the Fifteenth Doctor and Ruby Sunday

In a National Park in North-West America, the Doctor and Ruby are pursued by large, ape-like creatures who seem to literally disappear into the trees. When Ruby falls ill after apparently being stung, the Doctor believes the infection is extra-terrestrial in origin.

They meet Dixie and Greg, two Bigfoot hunters determined to track down the mythical Sasquatch. Standing in their way is Ranger Peone, who’s adamant that the forest is too dangerous to explore. Dozens of people have vanished, or reappeared with no memory, in the last month alone.

Then the ape creatures kidnap Ruby, and the Doctor is determined to both save her life and solve the mystery of the Sasquatch.

Genesis Lynea, who played Harriet Arbinger in the BBC TV series, reads this tense and dramatic original story by Darren Jones.
