Dr. Who Dalek movie 4K restorations preview at the BFI

Hosted at BFI Southbank in London, this unique event featured a screening of both classic Dalek movies separated by a Q&A session with members of the cast and crew. The venue has hosted screenings of the Doctor Who television series to tie in with releases of The Collection boxsets. It was an incredible thrill for these two iconic movie versions to be given the prominence they rightly deserve. Plus, it is a genuine thrill to see something intended for the big screen on the big screen. Even more exciting to see a full-size bright red movie Dalek in the foyer!

Q&A

Joining fans at BFI Southbank to see both films were special guests Roberta Tovey and Jill Curzon, as well as Anthony Waye (the assistant director of both films). After Dr Who and the Daleks had been screened, a Q&A session covered both films. Although the memories had faded slightly, there were plenty of enjoyable anecdotes.

Roberta Tovey had had difficulty completing her study sessions during recording breaks with Roy Castle down the hallway playing his trumpet and tap dancing away! Jill Curzon spoke of the Sherlock Holmes-inspired tweed ensemble with yellow suede boots with two zips on the front. The footwear wasn’t entirely suited for all the running required during the film! Similarly, Anthony Waye spoke of the difficulties of trying to coordinate multiple Daleks! Although it transpired that the panel were unfamiliar with the current incarnation of the television programme, their insight into their original productions was riveting.

Doctor Who actors spotted filming in central Bristol

Doctor Who actors spotted filming in central Bristol

Doctor Who stars David Tennant and Neil Patrick Harris have been seen filming in Bristol for the show’s 60th anniversary episode.

It was the first time Harris has been seen on set since his involvement was announced yesterday.

During filming, Tennant could be seen in his classic trench coat protecting the occupants of a car, while crowds of people were running away.

The show celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2023.

It was recently revealed that Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa will be taking over from Jodie Whittaker to become the show’s 14th Doctor.

But mystery surrounds Tennant’s involvement – having previously played the role between 2005 and 2010.

Eager fans crowded into Baldwin Street and Clare Street in the centre of Bristol to watch the production.

During filming, some cars were set on fire, and vehicles bearing the logo of UNIT, a fictional United Nations agency, have also been spotted.

Jack Trestrail, from Bristol, got up at early to see filming taking place.

“Its a really exciting spirit, the last thing you expect to pop up is Doctor Who filming here, I have the privilege of watching it being filmed and then seeing it next year,” he said.

Mr Trestrail staked out a good spot to watch filming take place.

Other fans, Diego Borja and Isabelle Peck, had skipped exam revision to come and watch filming take place.

“When I first moved to the UK it was the biggest cultural influence I saw,” said Mr Borja.

“It’s surreal being here. This only happens once in our lives so we can’t miss it.

“We’ve been whipping out the flash cards when shooting stops,” said Ms Peck.

SOB

The Doctor is delighted when his quest for the Key to Time leads him to his favourite planet, Earth. But his friends are less enchanted: Romana is nearly lured to her death by a sinister apparition, and K9 is all but destroyed by a belligerent boulder with the power to move – and a thirst for blood.

An ancient stone circle becomes a battleground as the Doctor must outwit the deadliest alien criminal this side of hyperspace – and her bloodthirsty silicon servants…

AOT

The Doctor and Romana’s search for the fourth segment of the all-powerful Key to Time leads them to the planet Tara, where courtly intrigue and romantic pageantry employ the most sophisticated technology.

Within hours of arriving, Romana is mistaken for a powerful princess and the Doctor forced to dally with robotic royalty – and both are quickly embroiled in the scheming ambitions of the wicked Count Grendel. Finding the segment of the Key is easy enough, but escaping with it in one piece will prove an altogether more colourful affair…

David Fisher was approached by script editor Anthony Read to write for Doctor Who and the result was the 100th story, THE STONES OF BLOOD, which transmitted in 1978. Fisher first met Read when the latter was setting up a series called THE TROUBLESHOOTERS in 1965. Fisher went on to write for ORLANDO (1967), DIXON OF DOCK GREEN (1969), SUTHERLAND’S LAW (1973) and GENERAL HOSPITAL (1977). As well as THE STONES OF BLOOD, Fisher also contributed THE ANDROIDS OF TARATHE CREATURE FROM THE PIT and THE LEISURE HIVE to Doctor Who. The first two stories were novelised by Terrance Dicks, but Fisher decided to pen the latter two himself for the Target range.

Following his work on Doctor Who, Fisher wrote for HAMMER HOUSE OF HORROR (1980), HAMMER HOUSE OF MYSTERY AND SUSPENSE (1984) and collaborated with Read on a number of historical books with subjects including World War Two espionage, the Nazi persecution of Jews and the Nazi/Soviet pact of the early 1940s.

‘Doctor Who: The Fires of Pompeii’ by James Moran

FOP

It is AD 79, and the TARDIS lands in Pompeii on the eve of the town’s destruction. Mount Vesuvius is ready to erupt and bury its surroundings in molten lava, just as history dictates. Or is it?

The Doctor and Donna find that Pompeii is home to impossible things: circuits made of stone, soothsayers who read minds and fiery giants made of burning rock. From a lair deep in the volcano, these creatures plot the end of humanity – and the Doctor soon finds he has no way to win…

James Moran is a British screenwriter for television and film, who wrote the horror-comedy SEVERANCE. He works in the horror, comedy, science-fiction, historical fiction and spy thriller genres.

‘Doctor Who: The Eaters of Light’ by Rona Munro

Available for pre-order here

TEOL

The Doctor takes Bill and Nardole back to 2nd century Scotland to learn the fate of the ‘lost’ Ninth Legion of the Imperial Roman Army. 5,000 soldiers vanished without explanation – how?

The search for the truth leads the Doctor and his friends into a deadly mystery. Who is the Guardian of the Gate? What nightmare creature roams the wildlands, darkening the sky and destroying all in its path? A threat from another dimension has been unleashed on the Earth, and only a terrible sacrifice can put things right…

Rona Munro was born in Aberdeen and has written extensively for stage, film, radio and television. Her breakthrough play BOLD GIRLS, won the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. As the writer of SURVIVAL and THE EATERS OF LIGHT she is the first (and only) writer of stories for both the classic 1963-1989 series of Doctor Who and the 2005 revived series.

All these Target novels will be released on July 14th 2022.

Centenary of BBC celebrated in Isle of Man stamp issue

BBC stamp issue, Isle of Man Post Office

A set of Isle of Man stamps featuring a range of popular BBC’s programmes has been produced to mark the broadcaster’s centenary.

The 12-stamp collection is set to be released by the Isle of Man Post Office on Thursday.

Each features a programme from the the BBC’s history, including Match of the Day, Doctor Who, and Blue Peter.

The post office’s Maxine Cannon said the broadcaster had an “indelible place in the hearts” of people on the island.

The set also marks the island’s connection to the corporation as Castletown-born Sir Frank Gill played “an integral role in its foundation”, she added.

The engineer has been recognised as playing a formative role in the creation of the British Broadcasting Company in 1922.

The “100 Years of Our BBC” stamp collection was designed in collaboration with BBC Studios.

Head of BBC History Robert Seatter chose the programmes featured on each piece after research into which programmes were most popular with the Manx public.

“Selecting just twelve moments was extremely hard, but we hope we have captured something for everyone,” he said.
