Doctor Who’s Legend of the Sea Devils set to air on Easter Sunday

Legend of the Sea Devils is the second in a trio of Doctor Who specials airing in 2022.

Doctor Who "Legend of the Sea Devils" Setting Sail Easter ...

The BBC has confirmed that Legend of the Sea Devils – the second in a trio of Doctor Who specials airing in 2022 – will land on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Sunday April 17.

In a swashbuckling special adventure, the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker), Yaz (Mandip Gill) and Dan (John Bishop) come face to fin with one of the Doctor’s oldest adversaries: the Sea Devils. Why has legendary pirate queen Madam Ching come searching for a lost treasure? What terrifying forces lurk beneath the oceans of the nineteenth century? And did Yaz really have to dress Dan up as a pirate?

Further transmission details will be announced in due course.

Legend of the Sea Devils is coming soon, and it looks like the Doctor has quite a fight on her hands.

Legend of the Sea Devils

Ahoy! The Doctor is about to get her sea legs in upcoming Doctor Who special Legend of the Sea Devils, which will see the TARDIS team take to the high seas as they battle the titular watery monsters alongside some historical pirates.

And now the BBC has released some first-look images for the extended springtime episode, giving us a better look at the episode’s villains as well as some new costumes sported by Whittaker and co-star Mandip Gill (aka the Doctor and Yaz).

First up, there’s another tease of a shifty-looking Sea Devil (see main image) – but he’s almost outdone in menace by the threatening presence of Madame Ching (Crystal Yu), looking armed (and fabulous) on the deck of her ship.

Both human and non-human villains look set to give the Doctor some trouble in this one, with the main story apparently focusing on a small village they’re terrorising.

Meanwhile, another shot gives fans a glimpse of a new-look costume change for Whittaker’s Doctor, who’s decided to pick an outfit that’s a little more era-and-geographically-appropriate than her usual get-up. We expect fans to be planning their cosplay accordingly.

Altogether, there’s not an awful lot new that we can learn from these pictures, but they’re sure to whet the appetite of fans who’ve not had much to go on about Legend of the Sea Devils since it was officially confirmed in January.

In one way or another, it’s a bit of a… sea change… in the promotion of this special (sorry). And based on what we’ve seen so far, it’s looking fairly shipshape (even more sorry).

Doctor Who: Legend of the Sea Devils comes to BBC One this April.

WHO: A HISTORY IN ART

WHO: A HISTORY IN ART

Who: A History in Art by Ken Tarling is published with the help and support of Candy Jar’s self-publishing partner imprint Jelly Bean Books. It is a personal artistic excursion into the history of Doctor Who.

jb_whoahistoryinartwrapcopycopy1

Ken has always been a fan of Doctor Who, and like most fans of the 1980s, he thoroughly enjoyed drawing characters from the series. One such favourite was the Terileptils from the Peter Davision story The Visitation. Over the years he has considered compiling a book of his art, but life has always seemed to get in the way.

In 1994 Ken had a major accident, which left him with no left thumb and bone cancer of the left hand. Ken says:

“Sadly I was left handed and I had to learn to write with my right hand. As you can imagine, this took quite a bit of time before I could master it (bit of a shame considering I wanted to become an art teacher). It took me two years before I could write again, let alone draw. I didn’t draw again for another eleven years. I guess it was a lack of confidence.”

When Doctor Who returned in 2005, Ken’s enthusiasm for art returned. Ken continues:

“I tried again, and then this time I couldn’t stop drawing until 2010. In particular, I really wanted to sketch a Slitheen from Aliens of London/World War III. Once finished, I thought it wasn’t too bad.”

Ken continued to draw, and then in 2019 he got some devastating news.

“2019 was the year I died. I kid you not. I had a AAA aneurysm (Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm). It’s when the main blood vessel that runs from the heart, through the chest and the tummy bursts, causing life threatening internal bleeding. This can happen in men and women over seventy. Odd really because I was fifty. I had a five percent chance of surviving. Five has always been my lucky number. I was in surgery for eight hours and had received thirty-six litres of blood. I was lucky to survive.”

“Then a week after coming out of hospital, I had a bad reaction to the blood thinning tablets and had a nosebleed that would not stop. I had a cardiac arrest. I actually died for seven seconds and slipped into a coma for about a day. My family were told that if I did not wake up by a certain time, they would have to turn off the life support machine. I woke up an hour before, thank goodness.”

Ken is keen to stress that this is a passion project to share with like-minded fans. He concludes:

“I hope people enjoy my interpretation of some of the Doctor Who stalwarts. My collection includes the Cybermen, Ice Warriors, Sea Devils, Omega, Morbius and the Toclafane. I hope it will encourage the next generation of fans to pick up a pen and draw.”

As Ken has suffered from cancer twice in his life and survived, he will donate a percentage of the profits to Cancer Research as a token of his gratitude for the help he received on both occasions.

Doctor Who has become the latest entertainment brand to crash into the wildly unpredictable world of Fortnite, with a set of Creative mode maps officially backed by BBC Studios.

Mat Way, Global Director of Gaming & Interactive at BBC Studios, said:

“Developing an island in Fortnite is new territory for Doctor Who and we’re excited to welcome the game’s established players into the Whoniverse.

“This is a great opportunity to introduce a gaming audience to Doctor Who and also for the existing community to experience a brand-new adventure. Players can expect a fast-paced, unpredictable journey with familiar friends and foes making appearances along the way.”

Options included in this new feature include a box fighting map inspired by the season 11 episode Kerblam!, an escape map featuring the destructive Pting from The Tsuranga Conundrum, and a rumble map featuring Time Lords and Daleks.

If you’re in the mood for a break, the game also includes a virtual Doctor Who museum, where fans can learn more about the friends and foes who have appeared throughout the long-running series.

First draft for tactile Doctor Who book delivered to visually impaired fan

First draft for tactile Doctor Who book delivered to visually impaired fan

Visually impaired fan Louis Moorhouse has received the first draft of the first book of Doctor Who Living Paintings for review.

Blind since he was 18 months old, 20-year-old Moorhouse from Bradford, England spearheaded a fundraising campaign to help the publisher Living Paintings create Doctor Who Touch-to-See books which would help blind fans like him enjoy and engage with Doctor Who on a whole new level. The publisher agreed if Moorhouse could raise the funds for research and development. Doctor Who Touch to See books will be sent out across the UK to blind youngsters like Louis — completely free of charge.

With the support and help of many generous people and a very special contribution from Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall, Moorhouse reached his fundraising goal and the books are now in the development stage.

“It was absolutely mad to wake up this morning and see that Chris Chibnall had given a donation! And a very generous donation too! To have such recognition from the man who literally runs Doctor Who at the moment means a lot. Thank you Chris, I really appreciate your support.”

As he ran his fingers over the tactile illustrations, Moorhouse marvelled at the detail in each one, exclaiming that he never before knew what a Sontaran looked like.

The raised illustrations will eventually be painted to enable the books to be shared and enjoyed with sighted friends, family and classmates. Touch- to-See books include raised tactile pictures and Braille, accompanied by atmospheric, educational and entertaining audio guides. The audio guides, often narrated by famous people, help fingers explore the tactile images, tell the stories of the pictures and describe their features. In this way, the senses of touch and hearing combine to make up for the missing sense of sight.

Moorhouse’s wonderful campaign officially ended on Monday 16 August, 2021 but this is not the end of his journey. Living Books will continue to involve Louis throughout the tactile and audio book production process, which will culminate in the publication of 3 Doctor Who Touch-to-See books provided free to visually-impaired children.

Young fan forced to leave collection behind in Ukraine

A Ukrainian mother has told of her teenage daughter’s heartbreak after she was forced to leave the majority of her Doctor Who collection in Kyiv.

As Russian forces invaded their country last month, Mari Sai’s family had to flee Ukraine’s capital and embark on a search for safety.

While her husband stayed behind, she took her teenage children, her own mother, her mother-in-law and two pets across 1,300 miles of European territory before finding refuge in Belgium.

In their Kyiv home, Mari’s daughter Sophia, 16, had amassed an impressive Doctor Who collection.

It included several Daleks, Cybermen, a Davros, multiple models of robotic canine K-9, a TARDIS, its central control column, a sonic screwdriver and a massive number of action figures.

Multiple versions of David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor featured in the collection alongside Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor, Peter Davison’s Fifth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, as played by Elisabeth Sladen as well as Rose Tyler and Martha Jones, who were played by Billie Piper and Freema Agyeman.

There was also a veritable menagerie of monsters which included an Ood, the Moxx of Balhoon from season one episode ‘The End of the World’, a clockwork robot from season two episode ‘The Girl in the Fireplace’ and some Slitheen.

By the time Mari and her family were pictured in Belgium, her daughter had just a Tenth Doctor, Eleventh Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, a clockwork robot and ‘The Only Good Dalek’ book.

“From a huge Doctor Who collection, now my daughter has got only this,” said Mari.

“But we are safe.

“From 25th of February to 2nd of March, we were on the road for 2,187 kilometres with two grandmothers, a cat and a dog and two teenage children.”

“[My daughter] is crazy about Doctor Who,” she added in a video recorded on her YouTube channel, which showed her daughter’s impressive drawings of Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor.

“She is very sad all her collection is in Kyiv. She has got only this book [and a few toys].”

The journey Mari and her family have taken from Ukraine to Belgium has been a hard one. Making the long journey, they were limited in what they could salvage from their lives in Kyiv.

On top of the clothes they brought with her, her daughter’s luggage was limited to a pair of boots, a laptop, a musical instrument called a kalimba, a pencil case and a notebook.

“I don’t know what happened with our house and with my mother’s flat,” said Mari.

“We don’t know anything about it.”

Mari herself brought very little beyond her laptop, hard drives and phone while her son brought a wrestling toy, a teddy bear and a book about defence equipment.

“My son is 14. He wanted to protect Ukraine,” said Mari.

In a YouTube clip, Mari shows drawings her daughter did of Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor.

“But he is too small for it. So we are here, but he is ready.

“He knows all about this book.”

One of the hardest parts of leaving behind her life in Ukraine was having to be apart from her husband, who stayed in the country.

“He is ready to protect our Ukraine,” Mari said.

“I wanted to stay in Ukraine too but I need to move our mothers and kids and pets and get them to a safe place.”

The journey Mari’s family has taken since leaving Kyiv last month has been a gruelling one, especially when they ran into some problems in Slovakia, which borders with Ukraine.

“There were difficulties in Ubl’a,” she explained. “I crossed the border with animals but in Ubl’a is absolutely nothing adapted for dogs.

“The others waited while I tried to find out what to do next.

“We had to find a lodging for the night and continue to travel with transfers by trains.

“My children were sitting outside with a cat and it was cold. I couldn’t spend the night, with a dog, where there are small children.”

Mari found that not everyone around her on this journey was as supportive as she would have liked.

“One volunteer said that it was necessary not to take animals from Ukraine,” she said.

“Other volunteers said to go somewhere by bus with children for eight hours and look for accommodation there for the night.

“One said that in general this shelter is only for 20 minutes and we have to leave the premises.

“In the end, I went outside with the dog.

“I stood there and just cried.

“I didn’t know what to do.

“I appealed to everyone. Many volunteers sympathised and brought blankets and food.”

Just when Mari needed it, the kindness of a stranger was her salvation during her hour of need.

Lynda Baron: 1939-2022

Captain Wrack | Doctor Who World
Lynda Baron as Captain Wrack “Enlightenment” (1983)

It has been reported today that actress Lynda Baron has passed away at the age of 82.  Lynda was well known to Doctor Who fans, firstly for lending her vocal talents in “The Gunfighters” (1966) singing  “The Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon” staring William Hartnell. She returned to the series for it’s 20th season in 1983 playing Captain Wrack in “Enlightenment” opposite Peter Davison and more recently “Closing Time” (2011) starring Matt Smith. A little known fact is that Lynda’s daughter Sarah Lee was John Nathan Turner’s production secretary in the 1980’s.

Lilian Baron (24 March 1939 – March 2022), known professionally as Lynda Baron, was an English actress, comedian, and singer. She is best known for having played Auntie Mabel in the award-winning children’s series Come Outside (1993–1997), Nurse Gladys Emmanuel in the BBC comedy series Open All Hours (1976–1985) and its sequel, Still Open All Hours (2013–2016), and the part of Linda Clarke in EastEnders in 2006 and from 2008 to 2009, with a brief return in 2016.

She was heard as a singer in the 1966 serial The Gunfighters. She appeared in front of the cameras as Captain Wrack in the 1983 serial Enlightenment, and again in 2011 in “Closing Time” as Val.

Baron is best known playing Nurse Gladys Emmanuel in the BBC sitcom Open All Hours with Ronnie Barker and David Jason which ran for four series in 1976, 1981 to 1982 and in 1985, and was subsequently voted eighth in Britain’s Best Sitcom in 2004.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Baron co-starred in the ITV sitcom Oh No It’s Selwyn Froggitt and the BBC sitcom A Roof Over My Head. On 26 December 2013, Baron reprised her role in a special one-off episode of Open All Hours on BBC One, entitled Still Open All Hours. Following the success of the Christmas episode, the cast made a full series, which began on 26 December 2014, followed by a second series in December 2015. A third series began in December 2016, but Baron was unable to return because of other commitments. Baron did not appear in the fourth series, and it is believed that she has quit the show.
