Lethbridge-Stewart THE OVERSEERS

Lethbridge-Stewart THE OVERSEERS

Candy Jar Books is pleased to announce the second book in it’s ninth series of Lethbridge-Stewart novels.

The Overseers is the first novel from author James Middleditch after two previous short stories for the series.

Range Editor Andy Frankham-Allen says:

“From the first time I read James’ first short story, Piece of Mind, I knew I had found a very good author. And it was after his second short, Latent Image for The Laughing Gnome anthology, that I knew it was time to test him on a novel. By that point plans were underway for the final eight Lethbridge-Stewart novels, which meant if I was going to use James, there would be no better time. James’ inventiveness is matched easily by his enthusiasm, and that shows in his writing. It took a few attempts to break his story, slotting in a few new elements and characters, but when the idea was locked down, James’ true skills came on full display.”

James Middleditch says:

“I’ve loved spending time reading about these characters over the past few years and was thrilled to be able to write a couple of short stories featuring some of them. I was then asked to pitch a story for a full novel, and was quite overwhelmed to be selected. This will be my first published novel. Nothing quite prepares you for the task, so I’m grateful for the guidance Andy has provided throughout.”

Andy says:

“It had been some time between finalising the outline and the first pass edit of the completed novel, time during which I had worked on a lot of other projects, so in many ways it was a nice surprise to read James’ book. I recalled only bits of the outline. What I discovered was some very sharp writing, in a book that exemplifies the what Lethbridge-Stewart (and indeed Doctor Who) does best, telling a good adventure story by playing on common fears and issues with modern culture. An even more clever task, considering the book is set in 1971.”

James says:

“Chapter planning was a great intermediate stage, although I’ve learned that these have to evolve as things progress and new ideas emerge. Spending an even more immersive time with these characters has been a pleasure. They have always felt so real, especially in the face of extraordinary things, and I feel privileged to have contributed one of their full adventures, especially as the series heads to its conclusion.”

As well as keying into some of the more disturbing sides of popular culture, The Overseers highlights some of the more interesting aspects of the South Coast of England.

James says:

“I’ve taken the chance with The Overseers to show off (and embellish!) some of our own local history here on the South Coast of England, while also exploring some very contemporary debates about surveillance and control. A few news stories have even broken during the time I’ve been writing that seem frighteningly close to the fiction. That blurry boundary between reality and speculation is an ideal one for our team of familiar characters to navigate. Likewise, the point between the past and the future, where each exerts a pull, is a great one to have taken them, and I hope readers enjoy going there too.”

The cover sees the return of popular artist Adrian Salmon, hot off his work on the latest Doctor Who animation, The Evil of the Daleks.

Adrian says:

“I loved the ICUs the moment I read the brief – it’s such a brilliantly simple idea, yet incredibly creepy: big brother on legs. I felt there should be a big bold drawing of an ICU with gun arm raised to catch the readers eye, whilst the rest of the montage hinted at scenes from the story. The speeding Volkswagen T2 Camper gave the cover a sense of movement, and all that was needed was Anne and Lethbridge-Stewart to complete the design.”

Blurb:

The Fifth Operational Corps is preparing for the future, but are horrified to see the shape of things to come.

A new form of surveillance is spreading across the South Coast of England. The British people are being shown a new kind of peace, but at what cost? Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and his team fear it may already be too late when this revolutionary method of control extends its reach through the ordinary city streets.

There are other secrets at work too, stretching from the past through the hidden world beneath the surface.

With nowhere to hide, Lethbridge-Stewart, Anne Travers, Bill Bishop and Samson Ware must find new allies. With their own histories part of the pattern and the fate of the country at stake, can they resist a force that’s closing in from every direction.

The next book in the series will be Blue Blood by Chris Thomas. The Overseers is due out at the end of October 2021, and can be pre-ordered now either on its own or as part of the series 9 bundle. The address to pre-order is: Lethbridge-Stewart: The Overseers – Candy Jar Books (candy-jar.co.uk)

Doctor Who announces Halloween air date for season 13

Doctor Who announces Halloween air date for season 13

Doctor Who

Doctor Who fans finally have a date for the return of the long-running sci-fi series, with Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor now confirmed to make her comeback on a spookily auspicious Sunday: 31st October, AKA Halloween.

Specifically, the first episode of Doctor Who series 13 will air on that Sunday, followed by new episodes on the five Sundays following, through to the finale on 5th December. And while this six-episode sprint is a shorter run than usual fans won’t have long to wait for more, with a festive special expected less than a month later around New Year’s Day.

This in turn will be followed by two more specials in the spring and then the autumn for the BBC’s centenary – altogether, rather a lot of Doctor Who to look forward to in the next year, even before the newly-announced return of ex-showrunner Russell T Davies in 2023.

The news was revealed in a new trail for series 13, which also revealed a special subtitle for this serialised series – Flux – on BBC One shortly before the latest episode of Strictly Come Dancing.

It’s currently unknown whether the choice of Halloween for series 13’s premiere has any particular significance. Doctor Who has occasionally dropped slightly scarier episodes around that time (for example, the Waters of Mars special in 2009) and we know at least some terrifying old monsters (including The Weeping Angels) are making a comeback for the new series.

However, it seems less likely that an explicitly scary episode would be used as the opener for a series, so it might be that the air date is more of a coincidence. Or the episode could be set on Halloween (fans had spotted some carved pumpkins on set during filming last year), and have a story that isn’t necessarily spooky all the way through.

Still, however much sofa-hiding they’ll need to plan for, we’d say fans will be glad to finally mark their calendars for their reunion with the Doctor and Yaz (Mandip Gill) and their first meeting with newcomer Dan (John Bishop). Not long to wait now.

Doctor Who returns to BBC One on Sunday 31st October.

Doctor Who unveils new alien spaceship as season 13 plot details revealed

Doctor Who has unveiled a new alien spaceship along with some series 13 plot details.

Series 13 of the BBC show is set to premiere later this year and will be the beginning of the end of Jodie Whittaker’s journey as The Doctor, while also introducing new companion Dan Lewis (played by John Bishop).

On Wednesday (October 6), a Doctor Who spaceship was projected across George’s Pier Head in Liverpool, England. The projection will be visible until midnight.

While there’s no details on who the spaceship belongs to, longtime Whovians may find its unusual shape very familiar. Something Sontaran, perhaps?

Along with sharing an image of the spaceship, the BBC also confirmed that series 13 will begin in Liverpool and it’s where we’ll first meet Dan, who will become “embroiled in the Doctor’s adventures”.

Bishop recently spoke about the instant rapport he developed with co-stars Whittaker and Mandip Gill, while adding it’ll be strange to soon no longer be working with Whittaker.

“They’ve been great to work with,” he said. “So welcoming and really supportive, particularly to someone like me who’s not done a run on a series like this before. I know everyone knows it, but as everyone says, Jodie is phenomenal.”

The comedian also acknowledged how strange it has felt knowing his time with Whittaker would be short, saying: “The way [Jodie] carries this show – the amount of responsibility that she wears so lightly on her shoulders – is staggering.

“The run’s coming to an end soon and we were all talking earlier about how weird it will be not seeing each other every week.”

The BBC has yet to announce who will be taking over for Jodie as The Next Doctor, but the BBC’s Director of Drama Piers Wenger has promised “radical” change is in the works for this new era.

Doctor Who airs on BBC One in the UK. In the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on HBO Max. Series 13 is due to premiere later this year.

Face a CyberReaper with the Thirteenth and Tenth Doctor

Face a CyberReaper with the Thirteenth and Tenth Doctor

The Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) and the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) need your help to save reality in the new console and PC game, The Edge of Reality, releasing on the 14th October 2021.

Compatible with current and next-gen consoles as well as PC, The Edge of Reality reimagines and expands on previous VR-only game The Edge of Time, with a completely new and compelling adventure.

The creators of this new Doctor Who console game gave some of the behind the scenes away before the Chaosverse is unleashed!

Writer Gavin Collinson, explains the excitement and teases more about expanding of Doctor Who: The Edge of Time, for non-VR consoles and PC.

“I wanted to take everything we knew people liked about the previous game (Doctor Who: The Edge of Time) and say, ‘Fantastic, more of that please!”

Doctor Who - Edge of Reality Concept Art

The Edge of Reality contains many thrills and excitements, including a brand new design of Cybermen. On the CyberReaper, Gavin says:

“I’m a huge Doctor Who fan, so as a writer a brief like this is fantastic, because all the things that you want to see in a game, you can create. It makes my heart sing to be able to have two Doctors in this story, to have the Cybermen and the Daleks, and not only that, but a new version of the Cyberman; a new enemy which adds to the mythology of the Cybermen. They’re an enemy that does evolve, and this latest iteration is something very different and macabre. Terrifying!”

And one of the developers, Stuart Gilray, notes:

“We wanted to explore the idea of a Cyberman that was more aggressive than ever before, so we looked at why Cybermen are the way they are and imagined what could make them even more dangerous. So if you look closely at the CyberReaper design, you’ll see that it is made up of different versions of the Cybermen – how this happened and why it happened, all will be revealed in the game.”

But what is the Chaosverse? Gavin explains:

“The Chaosverse is a geographical place, but also a state where the normal laws of physics have ceased to exist. It is an area of extreme danger, because everything that you think you can hold true, you can no longer hold true. As a gamer that’s enormous fun, because you simply don’t know what to expect. There are still plenty of elements there to make it recognisably Doctor Who, but it’s Doctor Who with a twist. I think it’s a section of the game people will really enjoy, because Doctor Who at its best is unexpected, but maintains all those motifs that we enjoy.”

Stuart adds:

It’s a chaotic universe, where the Reality Virus has hit and is breaking everything down. Things appear that don’t belong or aren’t where they’re meant to be, and we played upon that. It’s been unique, it’s been fun, and it’s opened up some great possibilities, such as introducing the Tenth Doctor.”

Doctor Who - Edge of Reality Concept Art

On writing for the Tenth and Thirteenth Doctor:

“Working with those characters was fantastic. With the Doctor, she’s always going to be the brightest person in the room, which is fun. But it’s also difficult to write because if she’s already got the answers, where’s the problem?! And so it’s just about balancing that: having the stakes high enough, putting her in a position where she is in peril, and then letting her go. Working with Jodie Whittaker is like a one-woman adrenaline rush, she immediately sweeps you up in the story. “David Tennant was also a joy to watch, particularly as we move the Tenth Doctor’s story forward, and we see a different side to him.”

Writer of the music for the games The Edge of Time and The Edge of Reality, Richard Wilkinson, told us how he went about for this style of a Doctor Who adventure:

“It was kind of like doing a sequel, with all of these ideas and themes and motifs ready to use as ingredients. It’s the first time that I’ve done something like that, where I’ve been able to reinterpret my own stuff and build on it. It’s like a tiny little legacy, being able to give something to the world Doctor Who and then revisit that and think about some fresh new twists on it.”

“Being able to record a new version of the Doctor Who theme for the game was an absolute honour – if you’d have told nine-year-old me, his head would have exploded. When you play the game, and the theme kicks in, it’s my new version with an orchestra and loads of weird sounds and synths, which was just so much fun to do. I’m excited for people to hear that as well as the rest of the soundtrack.”

Plus he shares an exclusive first listen of the CyberReaper theme…

“I knew we needed a theme for the Cybermen that would tie together all their narrative threads, but I also needed a distinction between the sound of the Cybermen, and the new character of the CyberReaper, who has a very jagged, aggressive motif. It needed to be something that was quite short and quite impactful, because you never know when you’re going to run into the CyberReaper. And it’s not the kind of character where you want something that’s slow and evolving and builds a sense of dread, because it’s a relentless pursuit and a relentless enemy. It’s a short, jagged, low strings, double bass and cello thing that you’ll hear, and then you’ll know you’re in a situation that you want to get out of pretty fast!”

Not long to wait now! Prepare to enter the Chaosvere with The Edge of Reality here: https://www.doctorwhotheedgeofreality.com or find out more here.

Season 17 announced as the next instalment in The Collection Blu-ray range.

Season 17 announced as the next instalment in The Collection Blu-ray range.

The penultimate season for Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor, with a full season of Lalla Ward as Romana, is the next release to come to Blu-ray with Season 17.

Doctor Who, Dr Who, Season 17, Tom Baker, Lalla Ward, Romana, K9

In 1979, Tom Baker’s Doctor was in full flight. With Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy) as script editor, the series leaned into Baker’s penchant for humour, and paired his Doctor with a regenerated Romana (Lalla Ward) as his traveling companion. Together, they would form one of the most popular Doctor/companion duos of all time.

Although Season 17 was crippled behind-the-scenes by strike action (resulting in the season finale being abandoned part-way through production), it remains a beloved slice of Doctor Who history, featuring the return of Davros and the Daleks, and one of the all-time classic stories, Douglas Adams’ own City Of Death.
