Doctor Who Makes The Cut in Nation’s Favourite Theme Tunes

Doctor Who Makes The Cut in Nation’s Favourite Theme Tunes

Delia Derbyshire who realised Ron Grainer’s original manuscript for the Doctor Who Signature Tune.

Distinctive theme music can make a TV series (Succession springs to mind) and can often be more popular than the show itself, or just as beloved.

The nation’s favourite television music has been revealed from a poll conducted by Classic FM’s TV Music Countdown, featuring tens of thousands of votes by the station’s listeners, visitors to ClassicFM.com, readers of Radio Times magazine and RadioTimes.com.

The dark and gothic theme tune to Inspector Morse, composed by Australian-born Barrington Pheloung, has been voted the nation’s favourite TV theme, 34 years after its debut on screen.

The ITV crime drama which starred the late, great John Thaw as the world-weary, classical music-loving detective, aired between 1987 and 2000, and is still repeated on TV and is a popular box set on streaming services. The music for the Inspector Morse spin-off Lewis, also composed by Pheloung, is the 20th most popular TV theme.

Composer Barrington Pheloung died in 2019. Heather Pheloung, his widow, said:

“Thank you to everyone who voted for the Inspector Morse theme and Lewis theme. I am sure Barry would have been overjoyed and honoured that the Inspector Morse theme has been chosen as the UK’s number one favourite TV theme of all time. It is such incredible news. I know he would have been quite humbled to be receiving this accolade given the many great, iconic TV themes that have been written for UK television.

“For Barry, writing music was a way he could bring joy and love to people, his music came from the heart, and composing music and bringing it to life with his colleagues and friends was his passion. The huge success of Inspector Morse, followed by Lewis and then Endeavour, allowed him to do what he loved in life, which he was always very grateful for. Barry regularly listened to Classic FM, and for him to receive the support and love from the Classic FM listeners is very special, and it makes me think of Barry with a lovely, beaming smile on his face. Barry’s children and I are so very proud of him.”

The nation’s second most popular choice is Aram Khachaturian’s Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia from the ballet Spartacus, famously used as the theme for BBC TV drama The Onedin Line, which was broadcast from 1971 to 1980. Downton Abbey (John Lunn), Game of Thrones (Ramin Djawadi), and Wolf Hall (Debbie Wiseman) all made the top five.

The top 1o also included Poldark (Anne Dudley), while the top 20 featured Blue Planet II (Hans Zimmer), Doctor Who (Ron Grainer), and Peaky Blinders (Nick Cave).

The top 20:

  1. Inspector Morse
  2. The Onedin Line (Adagio of Spartacus and Phyrgia
  3. Downton Abbey
  4. Game of Thrones
  5. Wolf Hall
  6. Band of Brothers

Doctor Who’s new showrunner and Doctor will bring ‘radical change’, promises BBC boss

Doctor Who’s new showrunner and Doctor will bring ‘radical change’, promises BBC boss

Piers Wenger, Director for Drama at the BBC

As is always the way when a Doctor and their showrunner leaves, there’s huge change a-coming for Doctor Who fans as reported by Radio Times.

Earlier in the year, Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chibnall announced they were leaving the TARDIS for pastures new, leaving plenty of speculation on who will be the 14th Doctor, and where the series will go next.

Speaking at the Edinburgh International Television Festival, Piers Wenger, Director for Drama at the BBC, has said that the change we will be seeing will be “radical” which does fit with the usual revamp that the show goes through whenever the main figures involve swap themselves out for new ones.

And there is even change coming before that as the show is trying something different for its upcoming 13th revived series, which will see John Bishop join the cast, as the whole season will be one continuous story.

“We’re gonna do the biggest story we’ve ever done,” said departing showrunner Chris Chibnall. “We’re going to go to all kinds of different places, and have all different characters and monsters, and it’s all gonna be part of a bigger whole.”

Fingers crossed it won’t be long until we find out what is next for the show with the news of who will be taking over still not out. Although we do know that Whoopi Goldberg is very keen on being the next person in charge of flying the TARDIS…

“I wanted to be Doctor Who and I still do,” she said at Edinburgh TV Festival. “I think it would mean an evolution into being American and I don’t know that that’s correct for Doctor Who. I don’t know I can usurp that. As much as I love it, I love watching it still in all the iterations. There are certain things that are blatantly all English. Doctor Who is like that to me. It’s like Marmite. It’s very English and needs to stay that way.”

THE CHILDREN OF JANUARY

THE CHILDREN OF JANUARY

Children of January

Candy Jar Books is pleased to announce that The Children of January, the latest instalment of The Lucy Wilson Mysteries, is now available for pre-order, exclusively from the Candy Jar and Lethbridge-Stewart websites.

Lucy Wilson is the granddaughter of the iconic Doctor Who favourite Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart, and the last four years have seen her contend with a succession of extra-terrestrial threats drawn to her home in the seaside village of Ogmore-by-Sea, Wales.

This time, however, Lucy is packed off on a school trip to Dartmoor, where to her surprise she encounters seven other young defenders of Earth.

Head of publishing at Candy Jar, Shaun Russell, said:

“Lucy and Hobo have really grown as characters since Sue Hampton masterfully introduced them in Avatars of the Intelligence. Since then we’ve seen them thwart an invasion of Mirror Clowns, end the TV career of Billy Bandrel, meet the Quarks, help the Brigadier save the universe, visit Fang Rock, and even witness Lucy’s birth. But now Lucy and Hobo are taking on their greatest challenge – and this time they need help!”

Enter Joshua Benton, Reisha Travers and many more – the Children of January!

Tim Gambrell, the author of The Children of January, is thrilled to be kicking off this new phase of the Lucy Wilson saga. He says:

“For one reason or another, I seem to have spent a lot of time with Lucy Wilson and Hobo over the past two years! It wasn’t planned that way, that’s just how it’s worked out. For me, at least, it’s been a joy. Lucy and Hobo are great characters to write for and build stories around. But since The Brigadier and the Bledoe Cadets was published, the next planned step for me was always The Children of January.”

The book is set in January 2020 (hence the title), before the impact of COVID-19. Lucy and Hobo are sent off to Dartmoor to represent their school, alongside various other pupils from schools nationwide. This adventure ties up a few loose ends from the previous books, and establishes a brand new mystery for our heroes.

Tim continues:

The Children of January was never going to be just another Lucy Wilson Mysteries book. Shaun gave me the title and a shopping list of things he wanted the book to contain. This included quite a large cast of characters. In fact, there’s even a guest appearance from a certain well-known warrant officer! Shaun then left me to turn his shopping list into an engaging Lucy Wilson Mysteries book. It was a challenge, for sure, but hopefully I’ve succeeded.”

Blurb of The Lucy Wilson Mysteries: The Children of January:

A new calendar year. A new term. A new set of challenges for Lucy Wilson and Hobo Kostinen.

The two of them discover they’ve been selected to represent their school at a national team event, that weekend.

But why such short notice? Who are the other seven children making up their team? And why are none of them bothered by the prospect of searching out concealed aliens on the frozen wastes of Dartmoor in January 2020?

Pretty soon, Lucy and Hobo realise that no one is quite what they seem on this particular weekend away.

The Lucy Wilson Mysteries is a Lethbridge-Stewart spin-off adventure inspired by characters created for Doctor Who by Mervyn Haisman and Henry Lincoln. It also features Sergeant Benton, created by Derek Sherwin.

UNIT: THE BENTON FILES

UNIT: THE BENTON FILES

COVER BOOK

Candy Jar Books is pleased to announce a very special book for 2021, the first of its standalone UNIT books, The Benton Files by Tim Gambrell and John Peel. It is also extra special because it features the very first meeting of the Brig and Benton, followed by Benton’s very first ever UNIT adventure.

Taking over as range editor from the hardworking and very talented Andy Frankham-Allen is the equally assiduous Tim Gambrell. Tim says:

“The Brigadier and Benton meeting for the first time seems such a momentous occasion in the Doctor Who universe. And we never saw it on screen. Of course, the Brigadier has a history of meeting much-loved characters off-screen. We never see the moment he first meets the Doctor in The Web of Fear, for example. And Benton is already a UNIT corporal when he shows up in The Invasion. But how did Benton join UNIT? The first story Into the Fire helps bridge that gap.”

To mark this occasion, Candy Jar recorded an audiobook version with John Levene. This will be released simultaneously with the paperback.

COVER CD

The second story has been written by popular Doctor Who author John Peel, and is quite literally a race against time around the streets of Birmingham.

Shaun Russell, head of publishing at Candy Jar, says:

“As we approach 2022, we will soon be wrapping up the Lethbridge-Stewart range of novels. It’s been a great journey, but it’s time to move on to our planned next phase.”

Authorised by the Sherwin estate, these UNIT new books will move the story onwards, to after The Invasion and beyond. Tim continues:

“Launching a series of books based around UNIT, and featuring the Brigadier and Benton, is by far my biggest creative challenge yet. But what an amazing opportunity it is! When Shaun telephoned and offered me the role of range editor, I remember thinking, ‘If I turn this down I know I’ll always regret it.’ So here I am, excited, enthused, immersed and loving every minute of it.”

The series will start in 2022, although The UNIT Files (similar to The HAVOC Files) will be released later this year.

Tim, who has written for both the Lethbridge-Stewart and Lucy Wilson series, is indebted to the outgoing range editor, Andy Frankham-Allen. He continues:

UNIT owes a debt to the work of Andy, and everything he established with the Lethbridge-Stewart books. UNIT won’t be a direct continuation of these novels, largely because the cast will change, and we don’t want new readers to feel they need to have read the Lethbridge-Stewart books first, but I hope the two ranges will complement each other. And if we get new readers jumping onboard with UNIT, it would be great if they feel they want to check out what else Candy Jar has done previously. Personally, I want to tell stories that will appeal to fans of Doctor Who, but also to readers who enjoy action-adventure stories in general. Character-driven narratives, grounded in their contemporary world, but with a modern inclusive awareness.”

The Benton Files novella and accompanying audiobook can be pre-ordered now and will be released in the next few weeks. Tim concludes:

“How wonderful it is to have The Benton Files narrated by Benton himself, the fabulous John Levene. You can hear John’s love and enthusiasm for the character of Benton as he narrates Into the Fire and Car Wars. I really hope people enjoy both versions of this release. Also, I’d like to thank Richard Young for such a gorgeous cover. He has really done us proud this time.”

Blurb:

Rifleman John Benton finds himself summoned to London, to the HQ of a brand-new organisation – UNIT – under Waterloo Station. There, he meets an old barrack room buddy, Major Bill Bishop, and UNIT’s Commanding Officer, one Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.

The young rifleman is about to learn that not everything is as innocuous as it appears. Major Bishop has specially selected Benton to assist him on a mission – a mission that could change Rifleman John Benton’s life forever.

This 13.5” tall, hand-painted statuette captures the iconic likeness of the Fourth Doctor, as portrayed by Tom Baker.

The Fourth Doctor was an energetic eccentric – a bohemian wanderer with no respect for authority, whose clownish antics veiled a powerful, brooding intellect. His fantastic adventures included many and much-loved companions such as Sarah Jane Smith, K9, Romana I and II, and Leela.

Reunited

Hero Collector Figurine Sixth and Peri Set

The Sixth Doctor was caustic, melodramatic and downright stubborn, a significant change from Peter Davison’s Fifth Doctor. His arrogance however concealed a core of empathy and passion, that saw him through countless challenges. His very first companion was Peri Brown, portrayed by Nicola Bryant.

Exterminate!

Yaz, Ryan and Graham discovered a disturbing plan to clone and weaponize salvaged Daleks into ‘Defence Drones’ in 2020’s Special, Revolution of the Daleks.

Faced with iron-fisted Prime Minister Jo Patterson and greedy US businessman Jack Robertston, their warnings fell on deaf ears. Fortunately, the Doctor was able to return in time to foil the cloned Dalek army – but in the end, the only thing that could defeat these new Daleks… was some even worse Daleks…

Excellent!

The Doctor’s past lives were reunited in The Five Doctors (1983) when a mysterious force drew five incarnations of the Time Lord together to the Death Zone on Gallifrey – along with some of their deadliest foes!

A squadron of Cybermen were among those brought to face the Doctor in the Game of Rassilon – ultimately, they proved no match for the more powerful combatants, including the Raston Warrior Robots…

Jody Houser elaborated on why this new arc reflects her love of writing for the Doctor Who comics:

“It’s always a blast to get to dig deeper into elements of the Whoniverse that we’ve only seen a bit of or haven’t seen in a while. It’s such an expansive playground to explore and tinker with.”

Tom Baker to star in audio adaptation of two lost Doctor Who scripts

Tom Baker to star in audio adaptation of two lost Doctor Who scripts

BBC One - Doctor Who, Season 12 - Tom Baker at 80

Tom Baker is set to reprise his role as the Fourth Doctor in Big Finish’s upcoming adaptations of lost Doctor Who episodes.

The two episodes – Doctor Who and the Ark and Daleks! Genesis of Terror – were written by screenwriter John Lucarotti and Terry Nation, creator of the Daleks, respectively and are set for release in March 2023.

Big Finish recently rediscovered the episodes’ original scripts and initial story outlines and will be adapting them into audio adventures as part of their series, Doctor Who – The Lost Stories.

A version of Doctor Who and the Ark originally aired in January 1975 as The Ark in Space, in which the Fourth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen) and Harry Sullivan (Ian Marter) explored a space station overtaken by alien insects The Wirrn, while Nation’s story Genesis of the Daleks was broadcast in March, with the trio heading to Skaro to stop the creation of the Daleks.

Sadie Miller, daughter of Elisabeth Sladen, will play Sarah Jane Smith while Christopher Naylor voices Harry Sullivan.

“This is something very special: Doctor Who archaeology brought thrillingly to life,” producer Simon Guerrier said in a statement.

“The Ark in Space and Genesis of the Daleks are among the best-loved TV stories ever. We’ve uncovered first draft scripts by John Lucarotti and Terry Nation that are exciting, surprising and very different.”

“Genesis is a very visual script packed with striking, stark images – Nation even makes the stage directions exciting. In Doctor Who and the Ark, the directions were more functional so Jonathan Morris has carefully adapted the script for audio. Though we’ve kept the original episode titles, such as ‘Puffball’ and ‘Camelias’ – I think Tom Baker enjoyed recording those! Oh, and wait till you hear that cliffhanger.”

Doctor Who and the Ark and Daleks! Genesis of Terror are both available for pre-order as a collector’s edition four-disc box set on the Big Finish website.
