NOTES

The Time War is not the first attempt that the Daleks have made at instigating a large-scale assault on the universe. Following the Doctor’s encounter with the Master during the Draconia-Terra skirmishes in the 26th century relative dateline (see CIA File QQQ/57), the High Council took the unusual step of assisting him directly, by remotely steering his TARDIS to Spiridon, a primitive world on which the Daleks had chosen to establish a forward base.

Initial intelligence showed that the Daleks were experimenting on the indigenous intelligent life form in order to establish whether their naturally occurring invisibility could be adapted for use on Dalek shock troops. We should consider ourselves fortunate that, although successful in their initial experiments, the Daleks were unable to solve the issue of light-wave sickness, which resulted in disorientation and ultimately death in all of their test subjects.

Once on Spiridon, and working alongside a Thal raiding party, the Doctor discovers that the invisibility experiments are not the primary reason for the Dalek presence on Spiridon. Using the planet’s frozen core and extensive network of ‘ice volcanos’, they have put a vast assault force into long-term suspended animation. Fortunately the Doctor is able to sabotage their plans, triggering an ice eruption that floods the entire Dalek base of operations.

It seems clear that, had the Daleks been successful launching a concerted surprise attack of such scale, it would have been difficult for any of the major space-going powers to have survived.

TACTICAL ANALYSIS

During this space-time event, the Doctor is successful in the use of sub-zero temperatures to defeat Dalek units, lowering their operating temperature at such speed that the Dalek creatures inside are killed by the sudden shock.

Whilst we have no reason to disbelieve this, it raises a possible operational inconsistency in Dalek functions, as we also know that they seem capable of functioning in the sub-zero temperatures of deep space without any obvious impairment of function. One theory is that Daleks must undergo special training for low-temperature operations; a more likely one is that the casings of Dalek forces on Spiridon had been specially modified either for experiments with invisibility or in order that they could be successfully placed into suspended animation.

Despite the Doctor’s success, it must be noted that the Dalek arsenal was not actually destroyed, merely rendered inoperable and the Daleks may yet muster enough resources to excavate this frozen army for use in the war against Gallifrey. It is recommended that reconnaissance TARDISes make regular sweeps of the Spiridon system, and that any increase in Dalek activity on the planet is reported to the War Council immediately so that appropriate action can be taken.

This stylish sci-fi noir adventure features her most famous characters: private detective Melody Malone and legendary time-travelling archaeologist River Song.

The Ruby's Curse by Alex Kingston

She’s got ice in her heart and kiss on her lips…

1939, New York. Private Eye, Melody Malone, is hired to find a stolen ruby, the Eye of Horus. The ruby might hold the secret to the location of Cleopatra’s tomb – but everyone who comes into contact with it dies. Can Melody escape the ruby’s curse?

1939, New York. River Song, author of the Melody Malone Mysteries, is forced to find a reality-altering weapon, the Eye of Horus. River doesn’t believe in curses – but is she wrong?

From the top-security confines of Stormcage to the barbarism of first-century Egypt, River battles to find the Eye of Horus before its powers are used to transform the universe. To succeed, she must team up with a most unlikely ally – her own fictional alter ego, Melody. And together they must solve another mystery: Is fiction changing into fact – or is fact changing into fiction?

Alex Kingston said:

“Having absolutely no idea of the journey I would be taking with River Song when I first uttered those words, ‘Hello Sweetie’, I cannot begin to express how excited I am to be able to continue not only River, but Melody’s adventures on the written page. A sassy private detective and a time travelling archaeologist joining forces to solve a mystery? What’s not to love!?”

Albert DePetrillo, publishing director of BBC Books, said:

“Working with Alex on this highly original new story has been such a delight, and we couldn’t be happier to be publishing her first Doctor Who novel. River Song is such an iconic character, and I think Alex’s many fans will be thrilled and amazed with what she’s come up with.”

The Ruby’s Curse is Alex Kingston’s first Doctor Who novel, and is released following the successful launch of Doctor Who adventures written by actors Tom Baker (Scratchman) featuring the Fourth Doctor and Sophie Aldred (At Childhood’s End) featuring the Thirteenth Doctor and Ace.

A Medley of Modern Masters

Doctor Who Hero Collector Figurines January 2021

Like the Doctor, the Master has had many faces throughout the years. This box set collects the Master’s most infamous incarnations from the modern Doctor Who series, as 1:21 scale hand-painted figurines (roughly 3.5” tall).

Derek Jacobi brought the Master back as the seemingly innocent “Professor Yana” (2007), before regenerating into the manic Prime Minister Saxon portrayed by John Simm (2007-2010, 2017). Michelle Gomez’ mocking and mercurial “Missy” worked with and against the Twelfth Doctor (2014-2017), and Sacha Dhawan’s vengeful, murderous spymaster brought Gallifrey to its knees (2020).

A winged Reaper!

Doctor Who Hero Collector Figurines January 2021

Winged gargoyle creatures, the Reapers lived in the Time Vortex and survived as temporal predators, feasting on paradoxes like bacteria taking advantage of a wound. When Rose Tyler went back in time to save her father’s life, the Reapers descended to feed – and were banished only when the timestream returned to its normal state.

This figurine is over 8.5” tall and 6” long, accounting for the Reaper’s scythe-like tail.

21st Century Police Boxes To Rematerialise in London!

21st Century Police Boxes To Rematerialise in London!

Gallery Inside A British Police Box

A new competition is being launched today [01 February 2021] calling on architects, landscape architects, designers and artists to submit ideas for a 21st Century Police Box to support interaction with residents, workers and visitors in the Square Mile.

The competition, being run by the City of London Corporation, the City of London Police, New London Architecture (NLA) and Bloomberg Associates, aims to provide a modern and engaging way to provide information and safety.

The ‘Digital Service Point’ will creatively reinvent the way residents, workers and visitors to the Square Mile can contact authorities and gain information. They will also store medical equipment for emergency response.

Up to six shortlisted teams will be awarded funding to develop their idea into a design proposal, with the winning design due to be revealed in the summer.

Chairman of the Streets and Walkways Sub Committee at the City of London Corporation, Oliver Sells QC, said:

“We are looking for ideas which will transform the traditional Police Box concept to something more suited to the modern day.

“Once the idea is developed and the Digital Service Points installed, these hubs will improve safety and security on City streets, helping to make the Square Mile even more appealing to our residents, workers and visitors.

“In keeping with the City’s ambition for our world-class public realm, we are encouraging designs that will improve the pedestrian experience while also being environmentally friendly and meeting the primary aim of keeping people safe.”

Temporary Commander at the City of London Police, Dai Evans, said:

“The digital service points will be an exciting additional means to help us prevent crime, deliver effective policing and keep our community safe; they will sit alongside our existing face-to-face contact with the public.

“City of London Police Dedicated Ward Officers continue to patrol the Square Mile, engaging with residents, visitors and businesses. Additionally, our Bishopsgate Police Station remains open for the public to get in contact with our officers.”

Managing Director at New London Architecture (NLA), Tamsie Thomson, said:

“This is such an exciting design competition, and we are thrilled to be working with the City of London Corporation, City of London Police and Bloomberg to offer an exceptional opportunity for architects, landscape architects, designers and artists to make a lasting impact on the City of London’s streets.

“The intersection of design and public infrastructure can be magical: think of Giles Gilbert Scott’s iconic red telephone boxes. And as any Dr Who fan knows, the old-fashioned blue police box has inspired many flights of fancy. Now we’re looking for another imaginative reinvention to grace the City’s streets and serve the public for years to come.”

Todd Asher of Bloomberg Associates, said:

“We commend the City of London and its partners for their forward-thinking initiative to better serve the public through the use of technology. We are pleased to provide insights from around the globe to help bring this idea to life in a way that serves all Londoners.”

Ideas for stage one of the competition must be submitted by midday on 1 March 2021, with the shortlist due to be announced the following week.

Doctor Who: The Lone Centurion from Big Finish Productions

The Weeping Angels return in mobile game The Lonely Assassins this March

The Weeping Angels return in mobile game The Lonely Assassins this March

The Weeping Angels and Osgood return this March in a cryptic ‘found-phone’ adventure game, The Lonely Assassins.

Following their encounter with the Tenth Doctor, the Weeping Angels were trapped in the basement of Wester Drumlins. That is, until now…

Doctor Who - The Lonely Assassins

…Merciless as ever, the Weeping Angels are back with a vengeance. Will you be able to uncover the truth and avoid their clutches? Now that the Weeping Angels have the power to infiltrate technology, no device is safe…

Developed by the award-winning studio Kaigan Games (Sara Is MissingSIMULACRA), The Lonely Assassins thrusts players into a dark mystery amidst a series of sinister events occurring at Wester Drumlins, a decrepit and supposedly uninhabited house in London. Building on the iconic Doctor Who episode Blink, all is not what it seems as ex-UNIT scientist Petronella Osgood (played by Ingrid Oliver) enlists the player’s aid in tackling a familiar and lethal foe.

Filmed in London and Cardiff, the game sees players interacting with a mysteriously discarded phone in order to uncover its secrets and that of its former owner. Blurring the line between live-action footage and gameplay, players will need to piece together clues and work with Petronella Osgood to trace connections to the first horrific encounter within Wester Drumlins.

Starting today, players can pre-register for access on iOS and Android devices, and pre-order or wishlist the game on Steam, with more news to follow on the Nintendo Switch version.
