YETI IN THE UNDERGROUND… AND A PLAGUE IN NEW YORK! SPECIAL EDITION

YETI IN THE UNDERGROUND… AND A PLAGUE IN NEW YORK! SPECIAL EDITION

Candy Jar Books is pleased to announce a special edition version of Times Squared featuring a brand new story by Rick Cross and updated cover by Martin Baines.

The story features the return of the Great Intelligence, and its foot soldiers the Yeti, but this time the action moves to the USA, with the Yeti overtaking the New York City Subway.

The Great Intelligence and the Yeti first appeared in the 1968 Doctor Who serial, The Abominable Snowmen, written by Mervyn Haisman & Henry Lincoln. It was such a success that the two authors were quickly commissioned to write a sequel, and in 1969 both the Intelligence and the Yeti returned for The Web of Fear, a story which also introduced Lethbridge-Stewart himself!

It was many long years before the Great Intelligence returned to Doctor Who; Christmas 2012. Two more appearances followed in 2013. This trilogy of stories (The Snowmen, The Bells of St John and The Name of the Doctor) was penned by Steven Moffat and introduced viewers to a future version of the Intelligence.

Shaun Russell, head of publishing at Candy Jar Books, says:

Times Squared is one of our most popular Lethbridge-Stewart books and has been out of print for a while now. We’ve had many emails requesting a new print and, for a while we made it available via Amazon’s POD service, but now it is time to give this wonderful book a new burst of energy.”

Times Squared takes place some eight months after The Web of Fear, transferring the Yeti from the London Underground to the New York City Subway. On bringing back the Yeti, Rick says: “I had this brilliant idea about the rats in the sewers of New York, and their connection to various plagues throughout the years. What if one such plague was the result of the Intelligence? And in these days of COVID-19, this story is more pertinent than ever. ”

Cover art is provided by Martin Baines, whose Lethbridge-Stewart artwork includes Downtime: Child of the New Earth, the Lethbridge-Stewart Colouring Book, and the upcoming Kiss of the Ice Maiden. Martin was really thrilled to revisit the artwork, and says:

Times Squared was my first cover for the Lethbridge-Stewart range. With Yeti robots covered in rats coming out of the New York underground, I couldn’t believe my luck. When Shaun asked me to revisit the artwork for this new format, I jumped at the chance. The changes are subtle, but I truly believe that the final version is much better than the original.”

Blurb:

When Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, his fiancée Sally Wright, and nephew Owain Vine, embark on a much-needed holiday to New York City, the last thing they expect to find is a puzzling mystery involving coma patients, a stranger from a distant land and a dark menace lurking in the bowels of the city’s labyrinthine subway system.

Before long, they’re battling an ancient evil pursuing a deadly campaign of terror that could bring Manhattan under its control… and the world to its knees.

GANGSTERS: DEATHTOUCH

GANGSTERS: DEATHTOUCH

Gangsters: Deathtouch

Candy Jar is pleased to announce the upcoming release of Gangsters: Deathtouch to coincide with the forty-fifth anniversary of this landmark series.

However, this announcement is tinged with sadness, after the death of Philip Martin in December 2020. Candy Jar’s Will Rees, who worked very closely with Philip on the book, says:

“Philip was very excited to have completed this final Gangsters book and was just going through the final proofs before he passed away. The second Gangsters TV series is famous for breaking the fourth wall. This was something Philip wanted to achieve in prose, and worked incredibly hard to make this possible. It is testament to his skill as a writer that has done this magnificently. In my opinion this book is a classic in the making. I just wish Philip was around to enjoy the positive reception the book will certainly get.”

Philip was also known for his various contributions to Doctor Who, which included the serials Vengeance on Varos and Mindwarp, multiple novels for Target and Telos, and the Big Finish audio productions The Creed of the Kromon and Antidote to Oblivion.

Philip had recently returned to the Doctor Who universe, revisiting his original creation, the unscrupulous Sil, in an independent production for Reeltime, Sil and the Devil Seeds of Arodor.

Starring original Sil actor Nabil Shaban, as well as Sophie Aldred, Devil Seeds proved a hit with audiences and critics alike, winning multiple prizes and earning an official selection from the Philip K. Dick Science Fiction and Supernatural Festival 2020.

Philip began his career as an actor. His first major screenwriting role was on Z Cars, on which he had once appeared. After writing seven episodes for the classic police drama, he contributed an episode to the seriesPlay for Today – a gritty depiction of underground violence in the streets of 1970s Birmingham. The episode’s popularity led the BBC to commission a two-series continuation: Gangsters, the show that made Philip’s name.

Airing in 1977 and 1978, these two six-part serials quickly earned cult classic status, garnering plaudits as one of the most singular shows ever broadcast by the BBC.

This reputation for originality is well deserved. Gangsters was at once a genre-blending deconstruction of crime drama, and a scathing polemic against the managed decline of industrial Britain.

Featuring one of the first truly multi-racial casts to be seen on British screens, Gangsters unsparingly depicted the exploitation of illegal immigrants, the complicity of a corrupt establishment, and the misery of heroin addiction.

At the same time, it featured magical kung fu assassins; Martin himself, pondering where to take the show next (memorably throwing the script up into the air in the show’s finale); and fight scenes choreographed to comic book POWS! and OOFS!

This iconoclastic blend of the high and the low, the serious and the absurd, the realist, the postmodern and the sheer surreal, won the opprobrium of Mary Whitehouse along with a legion of admirers.

Gangsters: Deathtouch is Philip’s return to the show that made his name. Over forty-five years since it was first broadcast, it will no doubt be welcomed by fans of his truly unique vision.

But this anticipation will of course now be bittersweet, as we commemorate a singular writer and his distinctive contribution to British culture.

POPULAR AUSTRALIAN AUTHOR JOINS LETHBRIDGE-STEWART

POPULAR AUSTRALIAN AUTHOR JOINS LETHBRIDGE-STEWART

Candy Jar Books is pleased to announce the second novel of its eighth series of Lethbridge-Stewart novels.

Fear Frequency is the first Lethbridge-Stewart novel written by popular Australian author, George Ivanoff, who previously wrote a short story for The Laughing Gnome anthology.

Range Editor Andy Frankham-Allen says:

“I’ve been in contact with George for a couple of years now, initially via Twitter, as is pretty normal these days for authors outside the UK. Over time it became clear that he wanted to write for the LSverse, so it just became about timing and finding the right slot for him. I was impressed enough by his short story in The Laughing Gnome that I immediately knew I was going to ask him to contribute to the final year of Lethbridge-Stewart novels. Indeed, Shaun (Russell, Head of Publishing at Candy Jar Books) was also impressed by the short story that he’s already got George working on a special Lucy Wilson Mysteries novel. But that, as they say, is another story.”

George Ivanoff says:

“Having written a short story for The Laughing Gnome anthology, I was eager to write more for the Lethbridge-Stewart range. So, when I was asked to pitch for a novel I jumped at the opportunity.”

George Ivanoff is a Melbourne author who’s written more than a hundred books for kids and teens, including the Gamers trilogy, the interactive You Choose series, the RFDS Adventures, the OTHER WORLDS series, and the non-fiction Survival Guides; as well as a ton of school readers and educational books. George’s books and stories have been shortlisted for numerous awards and he’s even won a few of them.

George continues:

“I’m a long-time Doctor Who fan. My favourite Doctor is Jon Pertwee, my favourite era is the UNIT era and my favourite supporting character is Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart. So, getting to write that character has been a fan-boy dream come true.”

Fear Frequency brings the team back together, including RSM Samson Ware, who hasn’t been seen in the ongoing series since The Man from Yesterday, and plays on a familiar theme from the 1970s, as well as tapping into some of the real-world resistance to Doctor Who in both the 1960s and 1970s.

George says:

“My main objective with Fear Frequency was simply to tell a good story. But I also wanted to be faithful to the characters created by other writers, and I wanted to make sure that, while the novel needed to fit in to the timeline of events in the Lethbridge-Stewart range, it could also be understood and enjoyed as a stand-alone.”

With his first Lethbridge-Stewart cover for 2021, Adrian Salmon returns once again for cover art duties with his own unique style.

Adrian says:

“My inspiration for the Fear Frequency cover began with the original posters for Hitchcock’s Vertigo and Hammer Films’ Hysteria. I very much liked the idea of using concentric circles to visually show the sound. Whilst sketching I was hit by the brainstorm of centring the circles with Trev Del’s single, and voila, I had a very strong central motif to hang the other images from. The Fear Frequency titles were of course a nod to 1960s Doctor Who, using wavy lines to indicate sound waves. Originally, I planned to add this digitally but decided to draw it in ink, only adding the text on the computer. The unknown woman with hands over her ears was referenced from Barbara Shelley in Quatermass and the Pit, who sadly passed away recently.I really enjoyed working on this cover as it hit so many of my personal touchstones.”

Blurb:

Former pop star turned entrepreneur Trevor Delacy and his Electric Soundscapes company are about to launch their new synthesiser onto the market. But all is not what it appears to be.

With much fanfare, a scary new science fiction series, Fear Frequency, premiers on British television. Cheaply produced and rather schlocky, it nevertheless makes an impact in an unexpected way, attracting the attention of Lieutenant Bill Bishop, who is still recovering from the events of ‘Domination Game’.

Discovering a connection between the television series and Delacy, Lethbridge-Stewart sends Regimental Sergeant Major Samson Ware to infiltrate Electric Soundscapes. Meanwhile, Bishop is eased back into active duty with a supposedly easy investigation of strange goings-on at an old persons’ care home.

Of course, nothing is ever easy for the Fifth Operational Corps, and Lethbridge-Stewart and his men soon find themselves battling against numerous opponents and frightening new weaponry.

ON TARGET: FANS SHARE TRIBUTES TO CHRIS ACHILLÉOS’ DOCTOR WHO ARTWORK

ON TARGET: FANS SHARE TRIBUTES TO CHRIS ACHILLÉOS’ DOCTOR WHO ARTWORK

Doctor Who News - NON-FICTION

In 2019 Candy Jar Books asked for fan memories of Chris Achilléos’ Doctor Who Target work (for inclusion in Kklak: The Doctor Who Art of Chris Achilléos). After receiving a plethora of contributions, Candy Jar is pleased to announce the final list of contributors.

Head of Publishing at Candy Jar, Shaun Russell, says:

“We were overwhelmed by the response, and the obvious love for Chris’ outstanding Doctor Who legacy. It was very difficult selecting the final contributions as Chris’ work is iconic and the heartfelt memories we received supported this. I just hope we’ve done him proud.”

The pieces selected are written by Stephen Pasque, Andrew Chalmers, David Bickerstaff, Russell Cook, Michael Nesbitt, Paul Pickford, Anthony Zehetner, Edward O’Hare, Steve Corke, and Jon Waudby. The dozen evocative pieces reflect on Achilléos’ enduring influence.

These sit alongside an exclusive foreword by the much-missed Terrance Dicks, extended contributions from David J. Howe, Colin Howard, Gary Russell and Jon Culshaw, and a testimonial by Peter Capaldi.

Newly released from Candy Jar, Kklak! collects the entirety of Chris Achilléos’ Doctor Who artwork for the first time. Alongside this are Chris’ recollections of working on the Target range, and full-page reproductions of his original compositions.

All the contributors share one thing: a lifelong love of Chris’ work and an understanding of the unique contribution he has made to Doctor Who fandom…

“They say you can’t judge a book by its cover, but with the launch of the Doctor Who Target range… this phrase was immediately dispatched to the darkest reaches of the constellation of Kasterborous.” – Russell Cook

In the days before video recorders or repeats, Achilléos’ covers defined a generation’s image of the Doctor and his adventures. Lavishly detailed, with psychedelic overtones and an unapologetically pulpy sensibility, his work both reproduced and reinterpreted the eccentric energy of the show’s golden era…

“As the years progressed, the Target books became my escape from reality… Arguments were frequent in my house, so… I’d stay in my room drawing the covers… I can’t stress how important the Doctor Who Target covers are to me now.” – David Bickerstaff

His work made the Target books collectables in their own right, objects that:

“No amount of baseball cards, Star Wars figures or assorted sweet combinations would prise away.” – Steve Pasque

Their visual flair was such that fans often remember their initial disappointment, when finally they got their hands on the televised originals, with the standard of their special effects!

“Anyone who has had the pleasure of watching The Web Planet could accurately describe it as ambitious and charming, but not as cool and slick as [Achilléos’] artwork promised it was… He gave the stories…visual production values which they could never have.” – Paul Pickford

By introducing a new generation to past adventures, the Target range was pivotal in expanding the Doctor’s domain outside of the TV set and into other media. More than anything, it was the Target range that established the importance of Doctor Who in prose, a medium in which the character has thrived ever since.

“Just as the works of Enid Blyton and Roald Dahl did for other children, [Target] led me to realise that reading was something to be enjoyed rather than dreaded.”– Edward O’Hare

Critical to their success was Achilléos’ visionary artwork:

“Usually I did judge the book by its cover. It had to look brilliant… My first? Doctor Who and the Cybermen. I didn’t know his name, but the man who illustrated my new Doctor Who book cover would be with me for the rest of my life.” – Andrew Chalmers

No retrospective of his work would be complete without these unique perspectives on how, with little more than an airbrush and a reprograph pen, one man introduced Doctor Who to innumerable young readers.

“To me, Chris Achilléos is one of the greatest fantasy illustrators of all time, and an iconic part of everything that is visual in the Doctor Who universe.” – John Waudby

Kklak! is the definitive collection of Chris Achilléos’ seminal Doctor Who artwork, a testament to his unique vision, and a unique insight into a pivotal moment in the evolution of Doctor Who.

“Chris Achilléos was the wallpaper of childhood for a couple of generations and his like will never be seen again.” – Anthony Zehetner

To this day, Doctor Who alumni tip their hat to the influence of Achilléos’ work. The opening of the 2016 exhibition of his cover art attracted the series’ then showrunner, Steven Moffat, as well as twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi.

Without Chris and his sublime work, I would not be a Doctor Who fan.” Michael Nesbitt

The paperback is available to buy now from Kklak: The Doctor Who Art of Chris Achilléos (Paperback) (freewebstore.org)

The hardback can ordered from Kklak: The Doctor Who Art of Chris Achilléos Deluxe Hardback Edition (freewebstore.org) (due to strict COVID-19 restrictions and paper supply Candy Jar only received half the order for the hardback. These books have been posted. The rest are due in the next two weeks).

Russell T Davies says Doctor Who should have Marvel-style shared universe of spin-offs

Russell T Davies says Doctor Who should have Marvel-style shared universe of spin-offs

A Doctor Who Movie? - Russell T Davies Interview on BBC ...

Russell T Davies has said that the BBC’s long-running sci-fi franchise Doctor Who should have a vast shared universe similar to that of Marvel and Star Wars.

The prolific screenwriter became a household name for his work on Doctor Who during the Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant eras of the show.

A decade on from his departure after handing the reins to Steven Moffatt, Davies’ opinions still holds a lot of sway among fans of the sci-fi series and his latest idea sounds very exciting indeed.

In light of the recent influx of streaming shows set in the Marvel, Star Wars and Star Trek universes, he believes that Doctor Who ought to be implementing the same strategy.

Journalist Paul Kirkley (who also writes for Doctor Who Magazine and RadioTimes.com) posted the comments on Twitter after interviewing Davies for the current issue of Waitrose Weekend.

“I was in the middle of running an empire,” Davies said of his time on Doctor Who. “And my god I did that 10 years too soon, didn’t I?”

The screenwriter is referencing the point at which his run on the show included spin-offs Torchwood and  The Sarah Jane Adventures, which ran alongside – and occasionally crossed over with – the main series.

Notably, this was before Marvel Studios enjoyed its meteoric surge in popularity, normalising the concept of shared universes in film and television.

Davies continued: “There should be a Doctor Who channel now. You look at those Disney announcements, of all those new Star Wars and Marvel shows, you think, we should be sitting here announcing The Nyssa Adventures or The Return of Donna Noble, and you should have the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors together in a 10-part series. Genuinely.”

The most recent Doctor Who spin-offs are 2016’s Class, which was cancelled after one season, and the recent YouTube series Daleks!, consisting of five episodes between 10-15 minutes long.

Needless to say, it’s not quite on the same level as the 10 blockbuster Star Wars shows currently in development or the numerous interconnected Marvel shows coming this year alone – but Davies has hope that Who can catch up.

He added: “You laugh, but did Star Trek fans ever think they’d be getting a Captain Pike series? Ever? That’s insane. The whole science fiction world is so creative and so money making right now, I think your wildest dreams can come true.”

For now, the BBC is working on its 13th series of Doctor Who (since the 2005 relaunch), which will see Jodie Whittaker return as the eponymous Time Lord.

At the start of the year, rumours emerged that she could be preparing to leave the role in a regeneration storyline, but there has been no official confirmation over whether that is the case.
