In April next year, David Tennant will return as the Tenth Doctor for a monumental new full-cast Doctor Who audio drama series from Big Finish Productions.
Dalek Universe comprises of nine hour-long episodes which will see the Doctor pulled out of time and sent back to the era before the last great Time War. Here he finds himself battling for survival in a universe full of Daleks, Mechonoids, Movellans… and Davros!
David Tennant said:
“It’s a big old epic sweep. It reminds me a little bit of those Flash Gordon serials that used to be on the TV during the school holidays when I was a kid. Each story has its own self-contained world, but the whole thing has an over-arching momentum. I’ve really enjoyed how varied it is, all within this one story, and the variety of worlds that we go to and environments that we’re in. And, as we go through this space opera, to have all these characters brought so clearly to life by a whole range of wonderful actors, it’s been a treat.”
Big Finish Senior Producer, David Richardson said:
“What is Dalek Universe? Well it is the first full season of Doctor Who adventures starring David Tennant as the Doctor in over ten years. It is also a huge celebration of the work and imagination of Terry Nation.
“This time the Doctor has no TARDIS for sanctuary and no Rose or Martha or Donna to help… but he is reunited with two faces from the distant past, two serving agents from the Space Security Service. Anya Kingdom (Jane Slavin) betrayed the Doctor in his fourth incarnation – can she make amends? Mark Seven (Joe Sims) is an artificial man with a mysterious history. Together the trio join forces to try and discover who has pulled the Doctor back in time. And more importantly – how can they help him get back home?”
The series will be preceded by a special prologue: The Dalek Protocol, a four-part Doctor Who adventure set on the planet Exxilon, starring Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor, and also featuring Leela (Louise Jameson) and K-9 (John Leeson).
Each of the three volumes in Dalek Universe will be released as a four-disc collector’s edition box set or download containing three brand-new full cast audio adventures, plus a selection of behind-the-scenes extras.
You can now pre-order all three volumes of Dalek Universe, which are available in three formats – collector’s edition CD, digital download or limited edition gatefold triple LP vinyl (limited to 1,000 per volume) – exclusively from the Big Finish website.

Candy Jar Books is pleased to announce that The Phantoms of Tusker Rock, the latest instalment of The Lucy Wilson Mysteries, is now available for pre-order, exclusively from the Candy Jar and Lethbridge-Stewart websites.
Lucy Wilson is the granddaughter of the iconic Doctor Who favourite Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart, and the last three years have seen her contend with a succession of extra-terrestrial threats drawn to her home in the seaside village of Ogmore-by-Sea, just outside of Bridgend.
Like several of Lucy’s previous adventures, the latest mystery is rooted in the area’s ancient legends. It was a concept that appealed to author Christopher Bryant, whose Welsh heritage has always informed his life and work.
Christopher says:
“One of the things I’ve always loved about Doctor Who is how it opens a portal – sometimes literally – between the everyday and the fantastic. In particular I’ve always liked the episodes that take the viewer into history. Whether it’s the Doctor’s flirting with Elizabeth I, or taking a jaunt around Dickensian London, it’s such a cool way of giving young viewers a sense of connection to their heritage. When Candy Jar approached me, I saw the opportunity to root around in that rich trove of folklore and myth and, hopefully, introduce it to a new generation.”
In The Phantoms of Tusker Rock we find Lucy and her superbrain sidekick Hobo encountering the ghostly cyhyraeth – a disembodied howl portending the death of the listener, which, legends say, can be heard emanating from Ogmore’s Tusker Rock to this day.
The Rock has long been a source of legend, the ruin of unwary ships for centuries. And where myths collide, and the supernatural threatens, Lucy Wilson is sure to be found.
South Wales, of course, has been a hotspot of all things extra-terrestrial, extratemporal and extraordinary ever since the BBC established the home of Doctor Who in Cardiff. As the capital of not only (unquestionably) the world’s most beautiful country, but also one of its most loved and enduring franchises, in recent years the city has drawn in tourists from all over the world, keen to see the real-life home of the Doctor’s adventures.
As Candy Jar’s Head of Publishing, Shaun Russell, puts it:
“You can go anywhere in the world and people know Wales because of the Doctor. When we started the Lucy Wilson series, we knew we wanted to build on this connection; not only did basing our stories in Wales help establish an internal logic within the wider universe, but being a Cardiff company built up Lucy’s adventures. Lucy is a mixed-race character, who moved to the area from London. Using her character as the means to explore Wales’ folklore, we hope to paint a picture of Wales in the modern day – a country proud of its traditions yet cosmopolitan, diverse, and entirely at home in the twenty-first century.”
Blurb of The Lucy Wilson Mysteries: The Phantoms of Tusker Rock:
Lucy Wilson might be the scourge of all things extra-terrestrial, but her latest opponent is a little closer to home. Try as Lucy might, her dad just doesn’t get it. Earth’s last line of defence doesn’t get to take days off, even if it means staying out on a school night!
Particularly when those nights are broken by the sound of supernatural howling. And ghostly Vikings stalking the streets. And a mysterious coven of druids, led by someone who looks awfully like the little old woman down the road…
Whatever her dad says, Lucy’s got a job to do. But with night falling, and the waters rising, soon she finds herself cut off from everyone she loves.
The Lucy Wilson Mysteries is a Lethbridge-Stewart spin-off adventure inspired by characters created for Doctor Who by Mervyn Haisman and Henry Lincoln.
Candy Jar Books is pleased to announce a very special book for 2020, the second of its standalone Lethbridge-Stewart hardback novels, Kiss of the Ice Maiden by Michael Sloan.
Michael Sloan has hundreds of TV credits to his name, including Battlestar Galactica, Kung Fu: The Legend Continues, Six Million Dollar Man, The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew Mysteries, andAlfred Hitchcock Presents. However, he is perhaps best known as the creator of the original The Equalizer TV series, which has subsequently been adapted into a billion-dollar franchise starring Denzel Washington.
In the late ‘60s, early ‘70s Michael spent a great deal of time in the UK and fell in love with Doctor Who, particularly the Jon Pertwee era.
Michael says:
“I have been a fan of Doctor Who for as long as I can remember. I wanted my Lethbridge-Stewart book to be a distinctive departure for his character. So, in my book the Brigadier falls in love! This is a thriller and, as you would imagine, the course of true love does not run smooth. Despite this, I thought it would make a change for the readers to see Lethbridge-Stewart wrestling with his emotions. He is vulnerable and his normal stalwart persona has been emotionally comprised.”
Kiss of the Ice Maiden is reminiscent of the early 1970s Hammer Horror films set in present day such as Dracula A.D. 1972. It has supernatural and horrific overtones, and is the kind of book that would expect from the creator of The Equalizer.
Shaun Russell, head of publishing at Candy Jar, says:
“A few years ago I worked together with Michael on Lost in Christmas, a children’s book about a family who become trapped inside Christmas cards and have to find a way to escape. While working on this, I sent Michael some Lethbridge-Stewart books and he devoured them. It wasn’t long before he pitched his own idea and I jumped at it. His story is certainly a different perspective on our hero. It also takes us right back to the 1970s, and picks up where we left off after A Very Private Haunting.”
The Kiss of the Ice Maiden delves deeper into the Brig’s past to find out what makes him tick. Alongside this, Anne Travers has lost her father to the Great Intelligence, and has turned her back on HAVOC. Michael’s story is an emotional punch-up and is reminiscent of The Equalizer.
Michael continues:
“The book does echo some of my screenplays I have written over the years, where the hero is flawed, but still very much a hero. I did this with some effect in the three Equalizer books. The Robert McCall character is tough, edgy and mercurial, all qualities that he shares with Lethbridge-Stewart. Particularly when he has been played with such strength and vision by Denzel Washington in the two Equalizer movies that have been shot by Sony/Columbia.”
The striking cover art is by artist Martin Baines, who created artwork for the Downtime hardback. Martin says:
“For me book covers need to convey the feel and mood inside a book. I don’t think you are treating the reader well if every cover looks the same with a generic photoshopped face of the hero on the cover and is often short sighted. When I was briefed by Candy Jar I instantly thought of the brilliant painted covers for Pan’s paperbacks in the sixties and posters for Hammer Horror. I do not normally use this type of palette so it was a bit of experiment but I really liked the poster of Hammer’s The Gorgan and thought it was a good starting point. I think it makes this cover slightly different and more special for the readers. The empty fairground also brought great images in my head”
Preview of the book:
“Lethbridge-Stewart moved through the overlapping shadows in the cemetery with his heart pounding in his chest. The coffin was shrouded by rain that sheeted across the ground. He knew what would be waiting for him, but he could not turn away from it. He approached the grave carefully, aware that one of the shadows could manifest itself into the shape of the creatures. Vines had wrapped their tentacles around the coffin. Lethbridge-Stewart stepped up alongside it, holding onto his revolver, and lifted the lid. He shoved it to one side, revealing the creature lying beneath. She was a scarecrow of the vision he had in his mind. Her skin was dry and flaked off when he touched it. She was a husk, wasting away as if ravaged by a deadly disease. Her eyes were obsidian, her long eyelashes a mockery of the once beautiful face. Its texture repelled him. It was his worst nightmare.”
A Lethbridge-Stewart thriller by Michael Sloan.

Dame Diana Rigg enjoyed a long and distinguished acting career on stage, in film and on television. The range of her roles was enormous, from serious drama to high camp.
She was the only Bond girl to get 007 to the altar. But for those of a certain generation, she will always be the desirable Emma Peel in The Avengers TV series.
Enid Diana Elizabeth Rigg was born near Doncaster on 20 July 1938. While still a toddler, she travelled to India, where her father worked as a railway engineer for the Maharaja of Bikaner.
By the time she returned to England after the war, she spoke Hindi as a second language. She was sent to a Yorkshire boarding school run by the Moravian church. “I felt like a fish out of water,” she said – although she later credited the experience with helping form her character.
On leaving school in 1955, she trained as an actress at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She made her professional debut in a production of Bertolt Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle as part of the 1957 York Festival.
She joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, where she played a number of roles, receiving much praise for her portrayal of Cordelia in a touring production of King Lear.
In 1965, she screen-tested for the part of John Steed’s female companion in the TV series The Avengers after the departure of Honor Blackman to play Pussy Galore in Goldfinger.
Diana Rigg as Emma Peel in “The Avengers”
In fact, the role had already been given to another actress, Elizabeth Shepherd. But Brian Clemens, the programme’s producer, was not happy with her performance.
“She’s not a bad actress,” he later recalled. “But she just didn’t have a sense of humour at all – that was essential in The Avengers. So we scrapped what we’d shot and got rid of her and then tested, and out of the tests came Diana Rigg, who was head and shoulders above everybody else.”
Her performance as the cat-suited Emma Peel brought her international fame. The surreal psychedelia of The Avengers made it as much a symbol of the Swinging 60s as the Mini and the Beatles.
Sexy, resourceful and self-assured – with a deadly knowledge of self-defence – Rigg’s character became an icon for the growing feminist movement. Her action-girl allure, coupled with her husky voice – the result of a 20-a-day cigarette habit – also brought her plenty of male admirers.
“We had no idea it would be defining,” she later said. “It was nose to the grindstone – working all hours that God gave.”
She also showed she was capable of taking on the establishment. During the first series, she discovered she was earning less than the cameramen and insisted on more money before making another episode.
But Rigg found the sudden fame as a TV star difficult to cope with. She recalled having to hide in a lavatory to avoid the attention of the crowds. It was partly her resentment at the invasion of her privacy that persuaded her that she would spend only two years with The Avengers.
She was also keen to keep her stage career alive. “Some weeks I’d spend four days on the set of The Avengers and then head up to Stratford to be Regan to Olivier’s Lear,” she said.
Dianna Rigg in “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”
Like Blackman, Rigg moved from the Avengers to 007, starring in Her Majesty’s Secret Service opposite George Lazenby. Rigg became the only Bond girl to get the secret agent to the altar, although the marriage was abruptly cut short when her character was shot dead soon after the wedding.
Her relationship with Lazenby was difficult, although she denied deliberately eating garlic before their love scenes.
She starred as Vincent Price’s daughter in the camp horror film, Theatre of Blood, but soon returned to the stage – nominated for a Tony Award for her performance in Abelard and Heloise.
In New York, her portrayal of Heloise was criticised by acerbic US critic John Simon, who described her in a nude scene as “built like a brick basilica with insufficient flying buttresses”. She later admitted she never felt comfortable removing her clothes on stage.
“I come from Yorkshire, and no-one from Yorkshire takes their clothes off except on a Friday night,” she said. The episode led her to later publish a collection of scathing theatrical reviews titled No Turn Unstoned.
She took a number of leading roles with the National Theatre Company at the Old Vic and gained a second Tony nomination for her performance as Celimene in The Misanthrope.
In 1990, she won a Bafta for the role of an obsessive mother in the BBC drama Mother Love. Four years later she won a Tony for best actress in one of her most acclaimed roles, that of Medea.
In the same year, Rigg was created a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
She appeared in a number of TV costume dramas, winning an Emmy for her role as Mrs Danvers in a Carlton TV production of Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca.
Her work in the theatre continued, including well-received performances in The Cherry Orchard, Pygmalion and Tennessee Williams’ Suddenly Last Summer.
Dame Dianna Rigg as Mrs Gillyflower in Doctor Who: The Crimson Horror.
In 2013, she appeared in a Doctor Who episode, The Crimson Horror, which was specially written for her by Mark Gatiss.
Her role as the evil Mrs Gillyflower was played alongside her daughter, Rachael Stirling. She was also required to use her native Yorkshire accent.
In her 70s, Dame Diana joined a long list of distinguished British actors who appeared in the HBO fantasy epic Game of Thrones, gaining an Emmy nomination. And she continued working until shortly before her death, appearing in the new remake of All Creatures Great And Small.
She was married twice, first to Israeli artist Menachem Gueffen, from 1973 to 1976, and then to Archie Stirling. The couple divorced in 1990 after Stirling’s affair with actress Joely Richardson.
In 2017, the 20-a-day smoker found herself seriously ill and undergoing a heart operation. During surgery, Rigg’s heart stopped and her life hung by a thread. “The good Lord must have said, ‘Send the old bag down again’,” the devout Christian later told a journalist. “I’m not having her yet.”
Although it was the role of Peel that brought her to public attention, Dame Diana was successful in casting off the character and carving out a distinguished career as a classical actress.
She never felt the need to return to the cat suit, steadfastly refusing to sign Avengers photographs that continued to be sent to her. Rigg excelled at playing sharp-witted female characters who carried steel fists in velvet gloves.
