Rory Williams, the Lone Centurion, gets his own audio drama series

Doctor Who - Rory Williams The Lone Centurion

Friend of the Eleventh Doctor, husband of Amy Pond, and guardian of the Pandorica, Arthur Darvill returns as Rory in his own full-cast audio series from Big Finish Productions.

Legend tells of the Lone Centurion — a mysterious figure dressed as a Roman soldier who stood guard over the Pandorica, warning off those who would attempt to open it; a constant warrior whose story appeared in the folk history of a dozen civilisations. Only… he seems to have misplaced it.

Arthur Darvill returns to reprise the character he first played on television in the first Eleventh Doctor story, The Eleventh Hour. This brand new series of adventures sees Rory alone, and takes him all over the world!

The Lone Centurion contains three super stories:

Gladiator by David Llewellyn The Unwilling Assassin by Sarah Ward I, Rorius by Jacqueline Rayner

Travelling to Rome in search of the Pandorica, Rory finds himself forced to perform as a gladiator in the Colosseum… where he attracts the attention of the Imperial household.

Arthur Darvill, who played Rory, said:

“It seemed like an offer I couldn’t refuse. As soon as I read the scripts, I was like, ‘Oh well, they totally get it, they’ve really nailed his voice’. It’s been a lovely way to revisit it in a very different way to what it was, but to do something more with this character. It’s funny but also quite epic, which is so lovely with what you can do on audio: to have these huge stories which in another medium would break the budget!”

Rory Williams’ adventures The Lone Centurion are available to pre-order from Big Finish.

Twinkl releases educational Doctor Who materials

Twinkl releases educational Doctor Who materials

Doctor Who Twinkl educational assets

The global educational publisher Twinkl and BBC Studios have created a ‘dalek-table’ range of free educational Doctor Who resources for children aged between seven and eleven years old.

Launched today in the UK, these are the first-ever resources based on Series 11 and 12 to be specifically mapped to the UK national curriculum.

BBC Studios and Twinkl have collaborated to create educational materials including activity sheets, interactive presentations and reading comprehensions, all inspired by the world of Doctor Who. The resources link the exciting escapades of the Thirteenth Doctor to units of study for school years three to six.

Covering core subjects including science, geography and history, the materials introduce children to figures such as Rosa Parks, Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison and teach children about a wide range of topics such as the Indian Partition, artificial intelligence and animals and their ecosystems. The resources can be used separately or alongside episodes watched at home or in class.

Twinkl and BBC Studios hope that by harnessing children’s interest in Doctor Who, children will be inspired to learn more about related topics in core curriculum subjects.

Free to use and accessible to everyone, the resources can be downloaded through the Twinkl website and are a valuable teaching tool for teachers, parents and carers. The materials, which includes PowerPoints, reading comprehensions, word searches and a range of other activities, are all created and checked in-house by experienced teachers from Twinkl.

THE SCHIZOID EARTH 2 ARRIVES EARLY

THE SCHIZOID EARTH 2 ARRIVES EARLY

Candy Jar Books is pleased to announce the sixth novel of series seven.

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the schedule for series seven has had to change slightly, with book six being released before books four and five. Fortunately, The Schizoid Earth: I, Alastair is not directly connected to the five-book Bloodlines sequence and can therefore be read before books four and five.

The Schizoid Earth: I, Alastair is a semi-sequel to David A McIntee’s 2015 Lethbridge-Stewart novel The Schizoid Earth, and is written by popular Lethbridge-Stewart novelist, Robert Mammone, returning for his third novel set in the LSverse.

Range Editor Andy Frankham-Allen says:

“We’ve been thinking of doing a follow up to The Schizoid Earth for quite some time. Of course, some of the threads set up in that novel have played a major role in other Lethbridge-Stewart novels, through the role of the Brigadier’s brother, James Lethbridge-Stewart. Since series seven is all about parallel realities, it seemed the perfect opportunity to do a novel set entirely within the Schizoid Earth. And Robert Mammone was the first and only author I considered for the task.”

Robert Mammone says:

“While daunting, writing a novel set on the Schizoid Earth opened up a lot of exciting possibilities.  I’ve long been a fan of alternative history science fiction, particularly authors like Harry Turtledove and especially the darker fiction of SM Stirling. The chance to use familiar characters, in unfamiliar ways, in a setting way worse than the timeline of ‘our’ Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart was one I couldn’t say no to. Of course, when you’re dealing with a villain, as the Column Leader clearly is, you have to ensure you’re not making them the hero of the piece, even if they are the lead. There’s a lot of fantasy/science-fiction writing out there today that embraces the anti-hero as being someone to admire. While that has its place, in no way is the Lethbridge-Stewart of the Schizoid Earth a hero – he’s a broken man ill used by his father and a servant of a monstrous regime intent on ensuring the last remnants of resistance are stamped out.’

As one would expect, with a book set in a parallel world, much like the Doctor Who serial Inferno which inspired it, The Schizoid Earth: I, Alastair features regular faces from the Lethbridge-Stewart range.

Robert says:

“Like what SM Stirling did with his Draka books, he made one small change to history, and the result was worse than anyone could imagine. The Republic is led by vile men who do vile things, and while the Resistance is admirable in their intent, their methods tend to ape that of the Party. I had a lot of fun throwing in bits and pieces that call back to events in the Doctor Who universe. Andy (Frankham Allen) is as always a font of information about the setting, and was a great sounding board when I found myself lost in the weeds.  His work editing The Schizoid Earth: I, Alastair has made it an even better book (he also supplied the title – it is better than my choice ‘I, Brigade-Leader’!), one I hope readers, new and old, of the range, will embrace and enjoy and celebrate!”

The cover is by regular Lethbridge-Stewart artist, Richard Young. Richard says:

“Evil Brig, who wouldn’t want to draw him. Inferno has to be in my top ten Doctor Who stories, and I love parallel universe, what if scenarios. Added to this, who doesn’t want to draw Big Ben blowing up?”

Talking about the change in the schedule, Andy says:

“When it became clear Chris (Lynch) would have trouble finishing off The George Kostinen Mystery in time, due to the increased work load of his day job brought on by the current crisis, Shaun and I sat down to discuss what was best to do. We needed to put a book out, but we didn’t wish to delay series seven any further. Bringing The Schizoid Earth: I, Alastair forward was an easy option, since the book does not follow on from, and isn’t impact by, the end of the Bloodlines sequence. You’ll find nothing in The Schizoid Earth: I, Alastair to spoil the final two novels of that sequence. Luckily I knew Robert had finished his book, and was holding onto it for a final pass. Which he promptly did, once I explained the new circumstances to him.”

In Conversation With John Fitton

In Conversation With John Fitton

Back in the 1980’s the Doctor Who merchandise landscape was a very different space, however one man, based in Goole, Northumberside was at the forefront of Doctor Who’s merchandise retailing, namely John Fitton, of John Fitton Books and Magazines. We’re thrilled to have been able to catch up with John to ask him a few questions in an exclusive interview.

John, how and when did John Fitton Books and Magazines start?

It started around 1980/81 and I went full time from August 1983 (Actually on my 33rd Birthday)

Is it true that you used to be in the police force before your mail order business?

This story has been going around for years. The simple answer is no. After Uni I lectured in Law. Then helped in the family building business, while running mail order part time. Then went full time in 1983. I heard a story that a policeman named John Fitton was killed in the early 2000’s when he was knocked off his bike. This was about the time I closed the business. So the story may have spun out of this.

Do you have any stories of your relationships with the BBC / merchandise suppliers?

I became licenced by the BBC in 1987/8 to produce a magazine binder, enamel badge, embroidered patch and button badge (never released) The binders were made in the UK but the enamel pin and patch were made in Taiwan. I had approached UK suppliers but the prices were outrageous. The BBC wanted to see actual samples (Not artist’s renditions) before licencing. The price quoted for a sample by a UK producer was £120, Taiwan $5.00. The merchandise producers in the early 1980’s were all small businesses and the relationships were very friendly.

What was the print run of your catalogues?

At the peak 6000 (this was people who had actually bought from us, not a random mail shot).

Do you have an interesting story from any of your customers?

I once had part of the Canadian Olympic Judo team turn up at the house and they were customers. People regularly visited from the USA.

Were any of your customers famous or became famous in later life?

That I would like to know. I see names on the credits of the DW episodes and I think he was one of our customers. I am never quite sure.

Did you ever get access / invited to Doctor Who at the BBC during the 1980s?

No.

Were you ever given news about the series before it was officially announced?

I tended to hear about merchandise rather than episode details.

What was the rarest piece of merchandise you ever sold?

I had costumes from Mysterious Planet, Planet of Fire and Blake’s 7. One thing I had that I didn’t sell was a spider from the Planet of the Spiders, it so poorly made and looked tatty that it wasn’t worth the price I would have to ask for it (A few hundred).  Somebody offered me Patrick Troughton’s recorder, I asked how was I to know if it was genuine and he replied he knew the bloke who nicked it from Patrick’s dressing room. I declined.

Where did you keep all the merchandise prior to selling?

All over the house, much to my wife’s annoyance.

What was your relationship with Doctor Who Monthly / and other Dr Who related magazines?

Always friendly, advertised regularly (Marvel Classified really helped the business get established) I was interviewed by them a couple of years ago.

How far and wide did you advertise and sell merchandise?

I only advertised in UK, but I sold worldwide.

Looking at the period in the 1980s what kind of market share did you have and who were your competitors?

Early in the 1980’s The Sheffield Space Centre and I had 14% of the UK DW video market.  Not many other dealers specialised on DW as I did, there were people like Bruce Campbell, 10th Planet Shop, Galaxy 4, Forbidden Planet and the Dr Who Shop (later The Who Shop).

Can you remember any interesting convention stories?

A kiss from Lis Sladen when I won an auction at Panopticon. Nearly crushing Frank Windsor in a lift when our stock trolley collapsed. (He survived untouched) The Dalek at Panopticon pressing a young waitress against a wall yelling ‘IMPREGGINATE IMPREGINATE’. The Pink Cyberman. Breakfast with Nick Courtney and Gail Bennett, Colin Baker carrying my 3 yr old daughter around the dealer’s room at Leisure Hive and them meeting her again when she was 18. My 7 year old daughter being chased by a Dalek at Panopticon in Brighton. A tip from a Star Trek Convention: “if two Klingon females are walking towards you down a corridor get out of the way, they’ll squash you”.

At one Con my wife was asked to model a Lela style costume, but when she checked it out it was more Playboy than Dr Who and declined.

The locations of the dealers rooms were sometimes not ideal. At the Adelphi in Liverpool the unloading of stock was a real pain and I noticed a fire escape that overlooked where I had parked my car.  Great. opened the door and set off every burglar alarm in one of the biggest hotels in Liverpool.

Also, at the same hotel at another event it was announced (I think by Nick Courtney) that Ian Marter had been found dead in his apartment. A really sad day.

Looking back to your mail order days what are the differences in the same market today?

The interest in DW merchandise from big manufacturers in the early 1980’s was very limited. This gave small businesses a chance such as Fine Art Castings, John McElroy, Sevan’s Models, myself, Andrew Skilleter and David Banks to get established and thrive. Today, it’s all the big companies. I tried to stock nearly everything that was produced, that would be almost impossible today. You would need a warehouse and very deep pockets. I ask, what is the appeal of Funko Pops?

Are you related to the Big Finish writer Matt Fitton?

Not that I am aware.

Why and when did the mail-order business cease trading?

Ceased trading 2001/2. But the decline started from end of 1995 when eBay and Amazon started. eBay enabled UK customers to buy direct from USA and Amazon discounted and offered free post. In the later years I concentrated on events rather than catalogues.

What did you do next?

I worked for British Gas (end up on their website) in parallel to the business for a few years, then BG full time until 2008 when I quit.

John, thank you very much.
