FIRST-TIME NOVELIST FOR FOREWORD TO THE PAST

FIRST-TIME NOVELIST FOR FOREWORD TO THE PAST

Candy Jar Books is pleased to announce that the fifth and final instalment in the five-book Bloodlines sequence of novels is now up for pre-order.

Continuing on from The George Kostinen Mystery, Foreword to the Past is written by first-time novelist Baz Greenland and sees our heroes finally joining forces as they travel through time to save the universe itself.

Range Editor, Andy Frankham-Allen, says:

“Originally entitled Back to the Past, this final part of the sequence was going to be co-written between me and Baz, but after seeing how effortlessly he wrote his short story, The Dinner Party, I decided to step back and let him write it on his own. Baz and I go back a few years now, 2014 I think, and we met when I did a talk at Rhydypennau Library on the companions of Doctor Who. His son displayed a remarkable knowledge of Doctor Who, and I soon got to talking to Baz himself. Since then we’ve often talked about writing, and Baz’s interest in such. As ever, it was just a case of finding the right story for him, the right opportunity. And here we are.”

Baz Greenland worked on his first unpublished novel at the age of ten, and has been working to develop as a writer ever since. He has written two plays for the Manchester Fringe theatre scene and a script for online comedy series Supermarket Matters. He regularly reviews TV, audio and film through his role as writer and TV editor for The Digital Fix. Baz first published prose work was with The Dinner Party in last year’s The Laughing Gnome: Havoc Files collection.

Baz says:

“As a big Doctor Who fan, writing for one of the show’s most iconic characters has been a dream come true. I am incredibly grateful for Andy and Candy Jar Books for giving me the opportunity. With their support, I’ve been able to achieve my dream of seeing my name in print. I cut my teeth into this world with The Dinner Party last year and it’s been an absolute pleasure – and a challenge – to go bigger with Foreword to the Past. Getting into the minds of Lethbridge Stewart, Anne Bishop, George ‘Hobo’ Kostinen and real-life hero Eileen Le Croissette has been a privilege. I’ve also had the duty of bringing to a conclusion a number of threads running through the Bloodlines series and I hope I’ve done it justice!”

Andy says:

“With four heroes it made sense to have two plot threads, and so from the outset of developing Bloodlines, it was essential that the threat not only be directed at Lethbridge-Stewart’s family line, but also Anne’s. The culmination of this sends our heroes into the past – specifically the 1967 Doctor Who serial The Abominable Snowmen and an event referenced both in Baz’s short story, The Dinner Party, and the book three of Bloodlines, An Ordinary Man. While one team of heroes have to avoid changing the past and interacting with established events, the other team have to ensure that Lethbridge-Stewart’s grandparents meet and fall in love. Both classic scif-fi tropes, and both wonderfully spun into a fun yarn by Baz in Foreword to the Past.”

Baz concludes:

Foreword to the Past is an epic adventure, filled with lots of wonderful character moments. Getting into their heads, understanding what makes them tick, is what really drives me as a writer and I’ve really put these four heroes through their paces. From a new twist on a classic Doctor Who story to nineteenth century France, I wanted to use real and fictional past events to shape the story. On screen, Anne and Lethbridge-Stewart never got to go travelling through time. In Foreword to the Past, I give these characters just that.”

The cover is a return engagement for the artist responsible for The Lucy Wilson Mysteries’ covers, Steve Beckett. Steve says:

Foreword to the Past is my third piece of cover art for the Lethbridge-Stewart series. Each cover I have worked on has called for a slightly different art style from me which is great fun and certainly stretches me as an artist. This cover gave me the challenge of developing the look of Hobo who first appeared on the covers of the Lucy Wilson series. The Lucy book covers are very cartoony and Hobo is very simply drawn, so for this book he needed to look more real. The author’s description of Hobo dictated his dress sense and included Hobo’s trademark hoody, but I had to develop his facial features, which was tricky considering his lack of hair and eyebrows! I settled on using my eldest son, Ethan, as a starting point, imagining him without his hair. I wanted to make sure Hobo still had his wide piercing eyes and I think it worked out well. Hobo is probably relieved that he is not being attacked by some alien beastie on this cover for a change!”

Blurb:

The Accord has assembled its team from various realities: Lethbridge-Stewart, Anne Travers, Eileen Le Croissette and Hobo Kostinen. They have been given their missions…

For Hobo and Eileen, it is a trip to 1935, and Tibet. There they must ensure that anthropologist Edward Travers is not killed. If they fail, he will not go on to meet the Doctor, nor will he go on to father Anne Travers, undoing decades of future history.

For Lethbridge-Stewart and Anne, it is a trip further back, to May 1896, Paris. There they must ensure that Lethbridge-Stewart’s grandparents meet and fall in love. If they do not, then Lethbridge-Stewart’s father will never be born, and neither will Lethbridge-Stewart himself.

But there is a mysterious force at work, targeting both time zones simultaneously. One determined to erase the bloodlines of both the Lethbridge-Stewarts and Traverses, and if it succeeds, the very future of the universe will completely fall apart.

Our heroes must use every skill they possess to protect and restore time, and make sure that the Lethbridge-Stewarts and Traverses go on to protect the future of Earth

Foreword to the Past will be followed by the final book in series seven, a sequel to 2015’s The Schizoid Earth and a final trip into parallel realities, I, Alastair by Robert Mammone.

ANOTHER FREE BRAND NEW LUCY WILSON STORY!

ANOTHER FREE BRAND NEW LUCY WILSON STORY!

Candy Jar is pleased to announce its latest free-for-download short story Sweet Revenge.

Prolific writer Paul W Robinson is new to the world of Lucy Wilson and, following in the footsteps of Jonathan Macho, has written a story especially for fans during lockdown. He says:

“I love science fiction and have always been a fan of Doctor Who, but I knew nothing about The Lucy Wilson Mysteries until I worked with Shaun from Candy Jar on my novel Charlie Abroad. Shaun was kind enough to send me the first three or four books and after that I was hooked.”

For Doctor Who fans that are unaware of Lucy Wilson, she is the granddaughter of the iconic Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, one of Doctor Who’s longest running characters. “The Brigadier”, as he is known to fans, was played by the late Nicholas Courtney. After the Brigadier’s death, Lucy Wilson assumes the mantle of her grandfather with the help of her best friend Hobo.

Sweet Revenge recognises that people, and even aliens, aren’t always what they seem. Paul continues:

“I have always liked writing about strong female characters to try to redress the balance. Lucy Wilson is strong, fearless, resilient and quick-thinking. And Hobo’s no pushover either!” Although only young, like the Brigadier, Lucy Wilson is a valiant hero. There is much more to her than meets the eye!”

Publishing co-ordinator at Candy Jar, Keren Williams, is excited to showcase Paul’s talent. She says:

“We’ve been working with Paul on a number of projects recently including something rather special to be released later this year. When we asked him to contribute a short story he immediately understood the tone we were after and delivered a cracking adventure for all of us who are stuck at home.”

 Blurb:

Lucy Wilson is stuck in isolation, away from her best friend Hobo Kostinen. Life for Lucy is boring and slow, especially when aliens aren’t following the lockdown rules! How can Lucy and Hobo defeat the monsters, but stick to the two metre rule?

The Lucy Wilson Mysteries is a Lethbridge-Stewart spin-off adventure inspired by characters created for Doctor Who by Mervyn Haisman and Henry Lincoln.

Doctor Who The Small Things

In a new short story by The Witchfinders writer Joy Wilkinson, Graham ticks something timey-wimey off his bucket list!

The Simple Things

Graham wasn’t keen on bucket lists. He didn’t want to be ticking things off as if there’d come a point where he’d had his fill, and he knew that when the darkness loomed, he found as much solace in the small things – watching the garden birds, dusting Grace’s frog ornaments, hiding the TV remote from Ryan – as he would in bungee jumping off the mountains of Mars.

But when the Doctor offered him the chance to go wherever and whenever he wanted, he knew exactly what to ask for. A small thing, and yet the biggest – a simple kickabout with the first West Ham team to win the cup.

He’d dreamed about it for years. A quick trip back to the glory days of 1964 to tackle Bobby Moore on the training ground. Graham was fully prepared to fall flat on his face in the mud. It would be an honour and a privilege. But this… this was just bloody typical!

“That TARDIS hates me,” Graham despaired. The TARDIS had turned up in a noisy, filthy factory corner, nowhere near Bobby Moore.

“That’s weird,” said the Doctor, checking the sonic.

“No it’s not. It’s exactly what I’d expect. It’s been like that ever since I brought my own cushion along, as if it’s a personal criticism. I tried to explain – it’s memory foam – ”

“No, it’s weird because we are in the right place,” she managed to cut in. “West Ham. Monday 20th April, 1896.”

“Did West Ham even exist in 1896?” Yaz asked, trying to give a stuff about football for Graham’s sake.

“The place probably did, but not the football club,” said Ryan, who had tuned out as much of Graham’s West Ham trivia as he could, but had unwittingly picked bits up.

“No, hang about…” gasped Graham, his eyes starting to sparkle. “Listen.”

They tried to, but it wasn’t easy to hear anything with the CLANK-CLANK-CLANK of the factory racketing on.

“This is an ironworks – that’s what they were called at first – Thames Ironworks F.C. That’s why they’re called the Hammers.” Graham’s heart was CLANKING now.

“Surely it’s Hammers because of the Ham?” Yaz said.

Graham shot her a withering look, but was soon sparkling again as he figured it out. “I never said which cup, did I? So it’s brought us to our first ever final against Barking – the Charity Cup. Last rematch after drawing twice. We win the trophy 1-0 in our first ever season – today!”

“Keep it down, Granddad,” warned Ryan. “If the players are around, you don’t want to give the game away. If you jinx it and they lose, you’ll change the club’s whole history.”

“Did they play here in the Ironworks?” Yaz risked another withering look, but Graham was too enthused to admonish now.

“No, but they worked here, so they must be having a last kickabout before heading to the match. I take it back – I could kiss that TARDIS. I’m going to train with Charlie Dove!”

“Or maybe not,” the Doctor was suddenly grave. “What does this place make, Graham?”

“Ships, mostly. Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company, if memory serves.”

“Warships?”

“That’s right. For the Navy. And some other countries – ”

“How about for aliens?”

He stared at her. They all did. She wasn’t kidding. They followed the trace the sonic had picked up, through the heat and cacophony of the ironworks to a large door that led into a vast workshop. Or that would have done, if it weren’t locked. A group of young men were hanging around outside, clutching a ball. Graham went quiet, like a shy little kid. The Doctor was still troubled – as were the men.

“Have you got us locked out?” said the man with the ball. “It’s the only empty space. We need to get in and practice, but the boss won’t let us because of some big customer.”

The whole team glared at them, suspicious of the strangers who seemed to fit the ‘big customer’ bill.

“Don’t worry, I’ve got a bone to pick with them too. Wait there, won’t be a tick,” the Doctor sonicked the lock and slipped inside. Yaz and Ryan followed, with Graham last, eyes riveted on his heroes, still unable to speak for fear he might only be able to squeak.

The gigantic room was indeed completely empty, until the Doctor revealed what was behind the perception filter. A leviathan of a spaceship. Iron-wrought like a WW1 dreadnought, but a very different shape, tooled for intergalactic skies not seas. Turrets rose on all sides, ready to be decked with alien armaments. A hundred canons at least.

“Draconian Galaxy-class battlecruiser,” the Doctor breathed in horror. “Early model, but I guess it’s another seven centuries before they use them to wage war on humans. I didn’t know you’d crossed paths yet.”

Before the others could get her to break that into bite-size chunks, another door opened and a man in a suit entered with a tall reptilian humanoid woman in a green robe. The gang needed no help to figure out that this was the boss with the big customer, who wasn’t happy to see them sniffing around her gunship. Before the Draconian could declare war, the Doctor was ready with her gambit, for once not even needing to fib.

“Morning! I’m the Doctor – your fifteenth Emperor made me a noble of Draconia. That’s all right, no need to bow, just tell me what on Earth you think you’re doing building gunships here on Earth?”

The Draconian frowned, but took her at her word and answered simply, “Where else should we build it? Our civilisation is too advanced to have our own people do such lowly labour. Our specialists will install the high-tech weaponry and systems, but the basic toil is best left to the basic species. It makes perfect economic sense for us both.”

The boss blushed at being dismissed as primitive and was keen to keep face. “Why wouldn’t she come here? We’re the best shipbuilders on the planet, and we’re almost bankrupt. I’ll take work wherever we can get it rather than see our people starve.”

The gang waited for the Doctor to lay into them both, to tell them the warship would be used against humans one day, and that any warship used against anyone was not good, and that humans weren’t expendable and exploitable by any empire that rocked up with a poxy chequebook… but the Doctor could see that the boss cared about his men, and that the Draconian was just a procurement clerk, and that warships would always be built by poorer worlds and used by richer worlds to destroy each other, and all of a sudden this nice day had nosedived and she felt the darkness loom and then she said –

“Brilliant! Makes perfect sense… except that I’ve brought my mate Graham here to have a kickabout with the guys waiting outside, so would you mind letting them in for fifteen minutes? Go on, you can stay and watch if you pop your perception filters back on.”

Graham never knew if it was the fifteenth Emperor’s honour or just the coolly authoritative way she said it that won them over, but before he knew it, the ship had vanished, the Draconian woman turned into another man in a suit, and soon the whistle was blowing and he was playing footie with Charlie Dove, and all the lads, booting the ball around the vast workshop, with Yaz and Ryan standing strategically to stop it hitting the ship.

The Doctor watched alongside the Draconian, commentating in such a way as to pass on all the fundamentals (including the offside rule) and a whole heap of passion, so that when the time was up, the ground was laid.

“Mind if I have this?” she stopped the ball on a rebound and booted it to the Draconian, who picked it up, curious.

“Such a simple object,” said she – or he, as the big customer guise appeared. “And yet, it’s quite fascinating. May I take this back with me to show the Emperor?”

Charlie Dove was about to protest – as was Graham, who’d hoped for a souvenir – but the Doctor cut in once more. “Please do. You never know, it might help you beat more people than a warship.”

She grinned. So did Graham, realising what she was up to. He reassured Charlie that the team would be fine without their lucky ball and gave them his West Ham pin instead.

“West Ham F.C.? That’s a good name for a team,” said Charlie. “Shame it’s taken.”

“It’s not – yet. I – uh – made it up. You can have it if you want,” Graham stammered, as the prototype Hammers thanked him and headed off to their match – to win the cup.

“Thank you!” Graham shouted, in the TARDIS, to the TARDIS, and to the Doctor and the universe, and whatever else had conspired to allow him to christen his favourite team. Who needed a bucket list when life could twist and turn and surprise you like this on a Monday morning?

The Doctor smiled. She doubted a quick kickabout could ever lead to saving the Earth, but sometimes the simplest things were the greatest things – like her favourite race, and like those beautiful, perfect spheres, on the pitch and spinning in all the solar systems. And if she’d learned one thing about the future, and the past, and the present, it was that she never really knew what would happen next. Which was why hope would always win.

Ten Doctor Who actors from the past 50 years will say thank you to real doctors and other NHS staff on a star-studded BBC fundraising telethon later.

Jodie Whittaker will be joined by a host of her predecessors as the Doctor on BBC One’s The Big Night In.

Little Britain, Peter Kay, The Vicar of Dibley and Catherine Tate will all also return during the three-hour special.

The show begins at 19:00 BST and will see Children in Need and Comic Relief join forces for the first time.

The Doctors have recorded a message thanking front-line staff for their work during the coronavirus crisis. It will be broadcast just before the weekly Clap For Carers at 20:00 BST.

The actors taking part range from Tom Baker, who played the role between 1974-81, to current Tardis-dweller Jodie Whittaker, and Jo Martin, who appeared as an alternative incarnation of the Doctor in two episodes earlier this year.

Other highlights of the night will include Matt Lucas and David Walliams doing Little Britain on TV for the first time in a decade.

Dawn French will revive The Vicar of Dibley, and Kay will unveil a new video for (Is This The Way To) Amarillo.

Tate will bring back schoolgirl Lauren – who is struggling with being remotely educated by her teacher, played by David Tennan

The three-hour show will aim to raise millions of pounds for vulnerable people around the UK who have been affected by the pandemic. The government has pledged to match all public donations, with a minimum of £20 million.

The programme also promises to “celebrate the acts of kindness, humour and the spirit of hope and resilience that is keeping the nation going”.

It will include the unveiling of a home-made video for a charity single featuring stars like Dua Lipa, Chris Martin and Rita Ora.

They – along with the likes of Ellie Goulding, Jess Glynne, Paloma Faith and Rag ‘N’ Bone Man – have recorded a cover of Foo Fighters’ 2003 track Times Like These.

Gary Barlow, Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon, Jack Whitehall, Romesh Ranganathan, Miranda Hart and the cast of People Just Do Nothing are among the others expected to appear on the show.

And the Strictly Come Dancing professionals have come up with a new routine for people to learn at home.

The programme will be hosted by Matt Baker, Zoe Ball, Sir Lenny Henry, Paddy McGuinness and Davina McCall.

‘Something positive’

“It’s so exciting to actually be able to do something positive… especially bringing Comic Relief and Children In Need together for one night only,” McCall told BBC Radio 5 Live on Wednesday.

“We’re actually going to be in a studio, which I’m personally extremely excited about – being in the same room as other people.

“We’re going to be in the BBC One Show studio, so there will be Matt, Lenny and me for the first hour and we will all be two metres apart.”

Sir Lenny told BBC Breakfast on Saturday: “We’re all going to be socially distanced, and then do a bit, and then move away from each other, and then nearly everybody else is doing stuff from home or from a remote location. It’s going to be great!”

The aim of the night is to let “the key workers and the care workers know that we really respect what they’re doing”, he said.

Speaking about the fundraising, he added: “A lot of the projects that we support have come to us and said that they’re really struggling in this time. They need our help.”

Sadie Miller voices Sarah Jane Smith

Sadie Miller voices Sarah Jane Smith

Doctor Who

As revealed in Doctor Who Magazine #550, Elisabeth Sladen’s daughter Sadie Miller has been cast in Doctor Who: Return of the Cybermen as Sarah Jane Smith.

Doctor Who: Return of the Cybermen is an unmade 1974 script from the pen of Gerry Davis, which eventually became the story Revenge of the Cybermen. The original script has been taken by Big Finish Productions, and realized in its original form as an audio drama.

Tom Baker reprises his role as the Fourth Doctor, joined by his companions from the televised Doctor Who season 12, Sarah Jane Smith and Harry Sullivan, originally played on screen by Elisabeth Sladen and Ian Marter, now portrayed on audio by Sadie Miller and Christopher Naylor respectively.

Actor Sadie Miller said:

“When Big Finish asked me to play Sarah Jane for this story, I was very nervous. I didn’t want to create a performance from someone else’s.

“So I tried to approach it as I would with any other role. I’ve tried to find my own piece of Sarah – the part of my mum that’s in me. But I have had a quick look on YouTube for Sarah Jane Smith screams, because I wasn’t quite sure how she would want me to do those. Other than that I just tried to keep it as separate in my mind as possible from the original.

“The fans of Doctor Who have always been so kind and generous to me and to my family. It was always a part of my life growing up, I was never not aware of it. People have always been very kind in letting us come along for the ride really, through conventions and now things like Big Finish and, after mum passed away, the outpouring of love for her has been lovely.”

Senior Producer, David Richardson added:

“How do you recast Sarah Jane Smith? Would you even want to? Those were the questions that bothered us – we love the character. We loved Lis Sladen. We worried it might be too soon and too difficult to go there. But then we realised that part of Lis lives on in Sadie, and Sadie has beautifully brought that to the role of Sarah – we all approached this carefully, and respectfully, and with love and I couldn’t be happier with Sadie’s performance. She’s done her mum proud.”

You can pre-order Doctor Who: Return of the Cybermen here from Big Finish. Plus, you can read more of Sadie Miller talking a bit more about her mother, and the reaction of the Doctor Who fandom to her return here.
