Doctor Who - Jodie Whittaker

Doctor Who fans can breathe easy, as controller of BBC drama commissioning Piers Wenger has insisted there are no plans for the series to take a break.

Speaking at a BBC Drama launch event, Wenger told the press that the BBC is “a very long way from wanting to rest” the sci-fi show.

The current series of Doctor Who – its 12th since the show was relaunched in 2005 – will draw to a close on Sunday (1st March), with star Jodie Whittaker and showrunner Chris Chibnall having already confirmed their involvement in another run of episodes, to begin shooting in autumn 2020.

But with overnight ratings having dipped below 4 million, Wenger – who previously served as executive producer on the show from 2010 to 2011 – was asked if there were plans to “rest” the show after that.

“I genuinely – I worked on Doctor Who myself, I produced it for many years, and I can honestly say that I don’t think it’s been in better health, editorially,” he said. “I think it’s fantastic and… the production values obviously have never been better.

“It’s an incredibly important show for younger audiences, still watched by families in a world where there are fewer and fewer shows that have the power to do that, so it will always be an important show for us.”

He concluded:

“I think we’re a very long way from wanting to rest it.”

Wenger also suggested that the cost of producing Doctor Who is not as significant as some might think, since the show is “not just funded by the BBC” but is “funded by lots of international partners”.

The 13th series of Doctor Who is expected to air sometime in 2021, though series boss Chibnall has hinted that the seeds for future episodes will be sown in this weekend’s series 12 finale.

“I’m coming back for a third season [and] we are already planning the stories,” he said. “Once you see the end of this series, you’ll realise there are some stories we’re already setting in train for next series. We have very big, ambitious plans for our third series together.”

According to attendees at this year’s Gallifrey One convention, producer Tracie Simpson revealed that pre-production on Series 13 begins in June 2020, with filming not starting until September 2020.

Filming on a series usually takes between 9-10 months to complete, when you factor in post-production. That logistically means the earliest we could potentially see Series 13 would be autumn 2021.

Doctor Who’s next series is planned to begin filming in the autumn, aiming for a 2021 broadcast.

Speaking at the Gallifrey One fan convention, producer Tracie Simpson suggested that shooting would start on series 13 in September.

GNR understands that while a September start date has not been officially fixed, Doctor Who is expected to go back in front of the cameras in autumn 2020.

This would mean that the next series would premiere next year – though again, an exact transmission date has not been officially confirmed.

hough filming itself might not begin for several months, Doctor Who will be in continuous production from now until then, with post-production still being finalised on the final episodes of the current series 12, to be followed by pre-production on series 13.

A special episode has also already been confirmed, to air at some point after series 12 has finished – likely during the festive period.

Jodie Whittaker has confirmed that she will star in the next series, telling Entertainment Weekly in January, “I’m doing another season. That might be a massive exclusive that I’m not supposed to say, but it’s unhelpful for me to say [I don’t know] because it would be a massive lie!”

Chris Chibnall will also be returning as showrunner, dispelling rumours of his exit last year. “It’s categorically untrue [that I’m leaving],” Chibnall told  the assembled press during a visit to Doctor Who’s Cardiff set. “We’re already planning the next series after this [12th] series.”

It is currently unclear which other regular cast members might be joining Whittaker, with the status of Bradley Walsh (Graham), Mandip Gill (Yaz) and Tosin Cole (Ryan) still unclear. Recently, Cole was cast in US courtroom drama 61st Street, playing a lead role in two eight-episode seasons.

Doctor Who continues on BBC One at 7:10pm on Sundays
