Jodie Whittaker returns to the Tardis for her second run of adventures as the Thirteenth Doctor and will once again be joined by friends Ryan (Tosin Cole), Yaz (Mandip Gill), and Graham (Bradley Walsh).

Anita Majhu, senior licensing manager at BBC Studios, said:

“This is such an exciting line and we’re thrilled to be offering Doctor Who fans the opportunity to be a part of the new series in this way.”

Two of The Doctor’s classic incarnations are set to team up in a new Doctor Who crossover, though not in the way you might expect.

Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor and David Tennant’s Tenth will cross paths in Titan Comics’ series, launching in January with the first issue of Doctor Who: The Thirteenth Doctor Season 2.

In issue #1, Thirteen and her companions will meet Ten and companion Martha Jones in a reimagining of classic Doctor Who episode ‘Blink’.

The Doctor in “Blink”

A new trailer gives us a neat preview of all the action as they face off against the Weeping Angels ahead of the comic’s January 8 release.

The comic coincides with the launch of the new series of Doctor Who, which will begin on New Year’s Day.

Ahead of series 12, showrunner Chris Chibnall has teased a theme for the episodes, though it seems it will be up to viewers to work it out.

“I don’t really want to talk concretely about what the theme is until after the series is over,” he said (via Radio Times). “You want to see the audience figure it out: that’s part of the viewing experience, how that evolves.

“I think it was pretty clear that the big theme of last series was family: different versions of family and different ideas of family.

“There is a different governing theme this year but I’m not going to talk about it at the start. People will be able to figure out what it is. It’s pretty clear by the end.”

Actor, James Buckley.

Doctor Who‘s 2020 New Year’s Day special, and the beginning of series 12, is less than a week away, but the BBC has been playing one bit of casting very close to its chest… until now.

The Beeb has just revealed that The Inbetweeners and White Gold star James Buckley will be appearing ‘in the upcoming series when it returns on New Year’s Day’, although we don’t think that actually means the New Year’s Day episode, ‘Spyfall, part 1’.

Although details about his character have not been revealed, executive producer Matt Strevens has stated that Buckley will put his “dramatic and comic talents” to use in what he calls an “action-packed” episode, which doesn’t help us narrow down which episode it is.

The actor himself says: “It was surreal to be on such an iconic show and I’m really happy to be part of something so well loved. Hope everyone enjoys it!”

The show has already announced a slew of guest stars for series 12, including Stephen Fry, Breaking Bad actress Laura Fraser, Anjli Mohindra (aka Rani from The Sarah Jane Adventures!), Hustle star Robert Glenister, ER‘s Goran Višnjić and Sir Lenny Henry. Phew!

Doctor Who Tops Ratings On Britbox This Christmas.

Doctor Who Tops Ratings On Britbox This Christmas.

LONDON, 27th December 2019: BritBox, the streaming service where the best of British creativity comes together, today announced the most streamed content over the Christmas period.

Tracking subscriber habits from Christmas Eve through to Boxing Day, it quickly became apparent that the most streamed series was Doctor Who Classic.

In the first 24 hours of its availability on the service, fans flocked to stream the 600+ episode collection, outstripping the popularity of other series by almost 20:1.

Social media quickly became awash with appreciation for the offering; the first time Doctor Who Classic has been available to stream in the UK.

‘Damn it, thanks to BritBox_UK and its app permitting me to watch classic #DoctorWho on my phone in bed, I may never sleep again’ said one fan.

Reemah Sakaan, group launch director for ITV SVOD commented:

‘We are so glad that subscribers are enjoying our fantastic Doctor Who Classic collection; the first of its kind available to stream in the UK. There has never been a better reason to miss a few nights’ sleep!

Jodie Whittaker’s New Year message as Doctor Who returns: “Don’t lose hope”

Doctor Who returns to our screens on the first day of the 2020s and Jodie Whittaker has spoken exclusively to The Big Issue about her hopes and dreams for the new year and new decade.

“What we should do going forward, and what I feel I need reminding to do, is take huge inspiration from the groups of young people who are putting their voices out there and articulating what we grown-ups can’t,” she says in our New Year edition of the magazine.

“We have Greta [Thunberg] putting herself at risk of criticism to say what needs to be said to move us forward – and we as grown-ups can take inspiration from a united massing of non-violent protest and voice. It’s inspiring.”

As someone who time-travels on television for a living – and does it better than ever judging by the electrifying New Year’s Day episode, Spyfall (Part I) – Whittaker offers a unique perspective on the new year.

She says: “However deflated we feel, throughout history, people have come together and got over massive hurdles. But the one we potentially can’t get over is climate change. So how can our generation think we shouldn’t be listening to the next one? I mean, they’re the ones that have to deal with all this.

“You are never too old or too young to give advice. So you need to be able to receive it from any age group. The new year needs to be open ears and open hearts. Don’t lose hope.”

Whittaker also explains how she takes inspiration from her television alter-ego, and how she feels fully at home in the Tardis as her second full series begins.

“What’s so incredible about playing the Doctor is that fearlessness,” she says. “Knowing the outcome could be devastating but doing it anyway, swimming out and not saving anything for the swim back. That is really extraordinary…

“I feel like I’ve been accepted as the Doctor,” Whittaker continues. “There was a pressure. If I’d have been a guy in this role I’d have only been representing my own casting as an individual. But it felt like I could hold people back if nobody liked what I brought to the Doctor.

“The gender question is now going away. Hopefully it won’t make the news next time.”

In a wide-ranging interview, the 37-year-old star reveals that there may be dark times ahead for The Doctor as she experiences more horrors and further heartbreaks…

“Some of those things take a particular toll,” says Whittaker.

“The new series is a huge learning curve… but I can’t tell you how. And this isn’t my last season so there’s no point cramming every single side of the entire character into every episode. We’re not in a rush because we hand these shoes on. For me it’s a transition through this universe. And it’s an epic journey.”

Sir Lenny Henry has criticised hit BBC One show Doctor Who for a lack of diversity in recent seasons.

The comedian – who is set to appear in the sci fi show’s upcoming New Year special – has claimed that TV bosses “would rather have a dog do Doctor Who than a black person” during an interview with London’s Colourful Radio.

“Why have we never had a black Doctor Who? They would rather have a dog do Doctor Who than a black person. There’s no black people in Doctor Who,” he said (via The Sun).

“When [former head writer] Russell T Davies was doing Doctor Who, there was so many black people in the show,” he continued, before adding: “I rang up and said, ‘There are too many black people in the show — put in some white people, it’s getting embarrassing’.

“Discussing how he thinks television can become more inclusive going forward, the 61-year-old said that the only way to achieve authentic representation is to make changes behind the scenes too.

Doctor Who season 11, episode 7, ‘Kerblam!’

“I only think when the decision-makers and the gatekeepers and producers and the executives look like the people you see when you’re walking down the street in your area will things change,” he said.

“We’re still a long way away. The ‘in’ group who are in charge of everything are getting complacent. They’re mistaking pro-black for anti-white.

“People have to stop being upset when racism gets called out. Not everyone is racist, but when we hear monkey chants at football matches somebody is doing it. Somebody has to take responsibility for it.”

When Jodie Whittaker returns for her second season as The Doctor in the New Year’s Day two-part special ‘Spyfall’, Henry is set to play a morally ambiguous tech guy.

“We don’t know what side he’s on but there’s something going on,” Henry teased, before adding: “I’m so glad they didn’t make me wear tentacles, I get to wear a tuxedo.

Doctor Who, Spyfall: screening at BFI Southbank

A screening of the Doctor Who, Series 12 opening episode Spyfall, Part 1 was held for the press and special guests at BFI Southbank in London, Wednesday evening, December 17.

A few journalists and a number of children where invited to the screening.

Jodie Whittaker, Bradley Walsh, Mandip Gill and Spyfall co-star Sir Lenny Henry were present at the screening, as were showrunner Chris Chibnall and composer Segun Akinola.

Only the children attending were allowed to ask questions of the panel after the screening, which featured Chris Chibnall, Jodie Whittaker, Mandip Gill and Sir Lenny Henry.

After the screening and the panel, guests socialised and enjoyed hamburgers with “DOCTOR WHO” branded on the bun.

There were very few comments by the journalists present on Spyfall, Part 1. We can expect to hear more from them when their reviews appear in various publications on an unknown date the BBC has chosen, possibly as early as a week from the screening.

Written by Chris Chibnall and directed by Jamie Magnus Stone, Spyfall, Part 1 airs Wednesday, January 1 at 6:55 p.m. on BBC One, and 8:00 p.m. on BBC America.
