Sophie Aldred returns as Ace in Doctor Who Blu-ray trailer

Doctor Who fandom went wild back in September when Sophie Aldred unexpectedly reprised her role of companion Ace, 30 years after she was a regular on the BBC sci-fi series.

A specially-shot trailer for Doctor Who: Season 26 – The Collection Blu-ray set saw Aldred play an older Ace – a teenager when she first appeared, the character was head of a philanthropic foundation called A Charitable Earth.

Ace’s fate was left in limbo when Doctor Who was originally cancelled in 1989, but the notion of A Charitable Earth (A.C.E. – geddit?) was first introduced by Russell T Davies in spin-off show The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Speaking at a BFI screening to mark the release of the Blu-ray set, Aldred revealed that she initially had some trouble imagining her tough, no-nonsense character taking up the path that Davies had suggested.

“When I first heard about A Charitable Earth, I thought, ‘Huh? Ace working for a charity?’

“And then I thought, ‘No, hang on a minute…’ because of her experience and the fact that Ace has… she has got a real heart… she wants to do right, I could see her heading up a corporation called A Charitable Earth. I thought that was just right.”

The ‘Ace Returns’ trailer was scripted by writer Pete McTighe, who also wrote the episode ‘Kerblam!‘ for Jodie Whittaker’s first Doctor Who series and will return to write another adventure for the upcoming series 12.

“I can think of no better tribute and celebration [of Ace] than Pete’s fantastic trailer,” Aldred said.

“I was just so thrilled when Pete sent through the script – in fact, I was so thrilled that I burst into tears, because it was really emotional.”

With a fan in the audience suggesting that the trail was the perfect set-up for a spin-off, Aldred responded, “Yes, isn’t it just? Let’s do it!”

Ace’s ultimate canonical fate is quite different to what had originally been intended for the character had Doctor Who continued into the ’90s – with the original intention being to write her out by having the teenager take up residency on the Doctor’s home planet of Gallifrey.

“There probably would’ve been a handover to a new companion in the course of that [next] season,” explained Andrew Cartmel, who served as script editor on classic Doctor Who’s final three seasons.

“[Writers] Marc Platt and Ben Aaronovitch had got together and they’d cooked up this great exit plan for Ace where she goes to the Prydonian Academy… and becomes like a Time Lord.

“Ace was such a fab companion, we couldn’t just let her disappear.”

Aldred added:

“I didn’t know [that plan] at the time, but what a great thing that would be!”

Doctor Who: Season 26 – The Collection is out on Blu-ray on January 20, 2020 and is available to pre-order now

Series 12 Trailer – First Look

Series 12 Trailer – First Look

Image result for series 12 trailer images doctor who

The first look that fans have been waiting for is finally here, after the BBC revealed that an official trailer for series 12 would be turning up on Doctor Who Day (Saturday, November 23) at 3pmGMT.

The first glimpse of the new episodes tease old monsters including the Judoon – and, as The Doctor declares

“something is coming for me, I can feel it”, the Cybermen…

A creature is also seen materialising through the TARDIS doors – to the Doctor’s surprise…

We also get firm confirmation that at least one episode of the new series will see the Doctor and companions end up in occupied Paris in 1943, right in the middle of World War II.

Saturday’s trailer launch follows a full week of huge Doctor Who announcements for 2020, starting with the casting of comedy legends Stephen Fry and Sir Lenny Henry in significant roles.

Fry’s character is seen telling The Doctor and co:

“The security of this entire planet is at stake. Can we rely on you?”

Then, Hustle star Robert Glenister and ER‘s Goran Višnjić were confirmed to be joining Jodie Whittaker and her companions Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill for their latest adventures.

The Doctor and her fam will need all the help they can get, because she will be squaring off with the Judoon and a host of “absolutely terrifying” new monsters designed to bring the series “up a level”, according to showrunner Chris Chibnall.

“I think we’ve got some amazing monsters. It’s probably a bit scarier,” Chibnall has said.

“The thing is with Doctor Who, you’ve got to hit all of the notes… We’ve definitely got some bigger action set pieces. We’ve got some old monsters coming back.

“We’ve got some really brilliant new monsters. And there’s a little thread trickling through. It’s not the same. We’re developing the story for the Thirteenth Doctor and this gang.”

Doctor Who returns in early 2020 on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US.

Doctor Who series 12 teaser

Set your atomic clocks: the first trailer for Doctor Who series 12 will materialise tomorrow, just in time for the show’s 56th anniversary.

A post on the official Doctor Who Twitter account has confirmed that the big reveal teased earlier this month is, as many fans had speculated, a trailer for Jodie Whittaker’s second series as the Doctor.

Not only that, but the tweet contains a teaser for the trailer, providing us with our first (brief) look at the new series!

There’s not much to go on, but we do see the Doctor’s loyal companions – Ryan (Tosin Cole), Graham (Bradley Walsh) and Yaz (Mandip Gill) – give her the nod before the Time Lord sends the TARDIS hurtling through time and space.

We also know exactly when the full trailer will be released – 3pm tomorrow, Saturday 23rd November.

Ahead of the new series kicking off, showrunner Chris Chibnall has dispelled rumours that he is set to depart the BBC sci-fi series, while also confirming that another series – the show’s 13th since its 2005 relaunch – is already in the works.

Guest stars already confirmed for series 12 include Stephen Fry and Sir Lenny Henry.

Doctor Who

Two national treasures, Stephen Fry and Sir Lenny Henry CBE, will appear in Series 12 of Doctor Who, broadcasting in early 2020.

With the TARDIS hurtling full throttle on its way back to our screens, it is only right that two British TV legends will be making their Doctor Who debut.

TV icons Stephen Fry and Sir Lenny Henry CBE will both appear in the series opener when the TARDIS lands once more, with Jodie Whittaker reprising her role as the Thirteenth Doctor. Armed with a wealth of acting, comedy and writing credentials both are more than equipped to come face to face with the Time Lord and her friends, but whether they will be friend or foe remains to be seen…

Speaking ahead of his Doctor Who appearance Stephen Fry said:

“Short of being picked for a British space exploration programme and I readily concede that I’m past the age where I’d be considered (if I was ever the right age for such a posting) – then being in an episode of Doctor Who will certainly do as a very sweet second-place excitement.”

Sir Lenny Henry CBE added:

“It was absolutely brilliant to be welcomed into the fantastical world of Doctor Who. The nearest I have been to the TARDIS was when I played the Caribbean Doctor in the Lenny Henry Show, so as a life-long (hiding behind the sofa type) Doctor Who fan this is a very special moment for me.”

Chris Chibnall, showrunner said:

“Doctor Who is coming back with a bang – with two great British icons in major roles. One of the great joys of Doctor Who is getting to work with actors from your wish list. Stephen and Lenny are two of my absolute favourite actors – and to be able to bring them into Doctor Who, in our one of our biggest ever stories to kick off the new series, is an absolute thrill.”

Doctor Who will return with Jodie Whittaker reprising her role as the Thirteenth Doctor alongside Tosin Cole (Ryan), Mandip Gill (Yaz) and Bradley Walsh (Graham) who are all returning for their second series.

Doctor Who makes an explosive return to screens in early 2020 for another action-packed series of thrilling adventures.

THE LUCY WILSON MYSTERIES: A CHRISTMAS CRACKER!

THE LUCY WILSON MYSTERIES: A CHRISTMAS CRACKER!

Candy Jar Books is pleased to announce that The Lucy Wilson Mysteries: Christmas Crackers is now up for pre-order, and will be released just in time for Christmas.

Head of publishing at Candy Jar, Shaun Russell, says:

“We’ve had such good feedback for the series of books. Reviews have been encouraging and fans seem to have embraced the series completely. As a small thank you for all of the support received, we wanted to release something completely unexpected in time for our readers to enjoy over the Christmas period.”

This short story collection entitled contains five stories by a range of different authors. The anthology kicks-off with The Mobile Army, written by popular children’s author Cherry Cobb. She says: “I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to write a Lucy Wilson story, having read the books I fell in love with Lucy as a strong independent character who isn’t afraid to stand up for her beliefs. I hope my daughter grows up to have the same outlook on life.”

The Christmas Cracker Conundrum is the second story in the collection, written by Tim Gambrell, and was initially given away for free in 2018. Tim says:

“It feels very fitting, to me, for The Christmas Cracker Conundrum to make its way into print, now, for a whole new set of readers. Lucy Wilson, Hobo and I have been on something of a wild journey over the last twelve months. It started with Shaun asking me to contribute a Lucy Wilson short story to Candy Jar’s 2018 advent calendar, then it ran through my two 2019 novels, and the journey now comes full circle, back to The Christmas Cracker Conundrum!”

Tim’s two novels are the recently released Lethbridge-Stewart: Lucy Wilson and the Bledoe Cadets and its Lucy Wilson counterpart The Lucy Wilson Mysteries: The Brigadier and the Bledoe Cadets, in which the lives of Brigadier and Lucy Wilson collide.

He continues:

“I love the characters, their energy, their individuality and the world they inhabit. And Lucy doesn’t just speak to kids her own age, either. In the best tradition of children’s literature, there’s always something in her stories for everyone. Shaun gave me pretty much free reign with my short story, only specifying that it had to involve Christmas crackers, somehow. That’s more than enough to get the imagination flowing. We all know where the mystery is with a Christmas cracker, until it’s pulled. And if my story makes the readers pause momentarily before they pull their crackers over Christmas dinner, then I’ll consider my job well done!”

Following Tim’s story is Crimes of Fashion written by Terry Cooper, author of the popular sci-fi series Kangazang! (which featured sixth Doctor Who Colin Baker reading the audio version). This is his first time writing for the Lucy Wilson series and when he was invited to complete a story he jumped at the chance, saying:

“I read some of the previous books and couldn’t wait to jump into Lucy’s adventures. The story takes inspiration from my teenage years as a rapper and break dancer, when the fashions were highly sought after and everyone was looking for the latest trends in shell suits and trainers. Added to the familiar sci-fi genre, it was great fun to write!”

The fourth story in the collection, Imposters is written by Candy Jar’s very own publishing co-ordinator, Keren Williams. She says:

“I joined the Candy Jar team just after the very first book in the Lucy Wilson series, Avatars of the Intelligence, was published. Since then, I have had the greatest pleasure of working through the entire range. Being given the opportunity to become a writer in the series has really made my year, but I just hope I’ve written something that everyone can enjoy.”

The final story in the collection Past, Present and Yet to Come is written by Cardiff-based film and comic writer Chris Lynch. Chris also wrote the highly revered second instalment in The Lucy Wilson Mysteries: Curse of the Mirror Clowns. He says: “I also wrote my story for the Candy Jar Christmas advent calendar last year. This story is a light reworking of A Christmas Carol and explores the future possibilities of the Lucy and Hobo characters.”

Popular Beano artist Steve Beckett continues at the helm of the series’ artwork, providing a front cover filled with intrigue and festive fun.

Blurb for Christmas Crackers:

Ogmore-by-Sea seems to have gone back to its old sleepy way. But adventure never stops for Lucy Wilson and her best friend Hobo, not even at Christmas…

In the run up to the holiday season, Lucy and Hobo help out at the school Christmas Fayre. But what’s inside the Christmas crackers? Why are people going missing? How does everyone seem to be so unlucky? And who is the mysterious Crone?

A collection of five short stories set between Christmas, the New Year and beyond… this book is Christmas Crackers!

The Lucy Wilson Mysteries is a Lethbridge-Stewart spin-off adventure inspired by characters created for Doctor Who by Mervyn Haisman and Henry Lincoln.

CHRIS ACHILLÉOS: DOCTOR WHO VISIONARY

CHRIS ACHILLÉOS: DOCTOR WHO VISIONARY

In his five decades as an illustrator, painter and conceptual artist, Chris Achilléos has four best-selling books of his art, Beauty and the Beast, Syrens, Medusa and Amazona. He worked with the likes of George Lucas, as well as producing the iconic promotional art for the cult film Heavy Metal. But it is probably his work for Doctor Who that is the most enduringly popular.

His covers for the official Target novelisations, which began in the early ‘70s, defined a generation’s image of the Doctor and his adventures – particularly after the show disappeared from British screens in the late ‘80s.

Lavishly detailed, with psychedelic overtones and an unapologetically pulpy sensibility, these covers perfectly captured the eccentric appeal of the classic series. To this day, Doctor Who luminaries tip their hat to the influence of Achilléos’ work. The opening of a 2016 exhibition of Target’s cover artwork at the Cartoon Museum, London, attracted the series’ then-showrunner Steven Moffat, as well as twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi.

With the Doctor long back on our screens, and more popular than ever, it is perhaps surprising that Achilléos’ Whovian oeuvre (or Whoeuvre, if you will) has never been collected in one place.

Kklak: The Doctor Who Art of Chris Achilléos, an upcoming title from award-winning independent publisher Candy Jar Books, aims to address this. For the first time, it collects the entirety of Achilléos’ Doctor Who artwork in chronological order, along with commentary from Achilléos himself (as well as some fans) – presenting the definitive guide to his seminal work. The book also includes a small contribution from twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi and a foreword from Achilléos’ long-time friend and collaborator, the late Terrance Dicks.

Achilléos explains his motivations for compiling the book:

“I go to a lot of conventions, and the enduring affection of the fans for those Target novelisations is such a compliment. As an artist you’re always wary of being pigeonholed – you want all your work to receive the same amount of attention! But Doctor Who is such a phenomenon, and the commitment of the fans so pure, you have to be grateful. I hope they enjoy this special book.”

As the home of the Lethbridge-Stewart series, one of only a handful of fully licensed Doctor Who ranges outside of the BBC, Candy Jar was the natural home for Achilléos’ new title. As Candy Jar’s head of publishing, Shaun Russell, explains:

“The Target novels were a huge part of our childhood. And when it came to our own range of Doctor Who books, they were an inspiration. You could always tell that they were produced by people who cared. There was an attention to detail, and a level of quality, which quite frankly, went above and beyond what was necessary. Doctor Who will sell regardless, but as a series it means so much to people – and to us here at Candy Jar – that you want to do repay that. And from the first moment you picked up a Target title, with one Chris Achilléos’ brilliant designs on the cover, you knew that you were in for something wonderful. His work manages to capture everything that makes Doctor Who special, and stand alone as works of art in their own right. When Chris first spoke with us, I jumped at the chance to work with him.”

Featuring every one of Achilléos’ Doctor Who designs, as well as never before seen material giving insight into his creative process, Kklak: the Doctor Who Art of Chris Achilléos is released in April 2020 by Candy Jar Books www.candyjarbooks.co.uk

http://www.candy-jar.co.uk/books/klakkthedoctorwhoartofchrisachilleos.html

The book will be available as paperback and deluxe hardback edition.

NEW AUTHOR LINE-UP FOR LOOSE ENDS

NEW AUTHOR LINE-UP FOR LOOSE ENDS

Candy Jar Books is pleased to announce its next short story collection is going to the printers this week. The HAVOC Files: Loose Ends features six brand new stories written by Range Editor Andy Frankham-Allen and guest authors Tim Gambrell, Sharon Bidwell and John Peel.

The collection was originally due early in the year but has been delayed by real life events. It was intended to be a collection with only one author, Andy Frankham-Allen, but to ensure it got finished before the end of the year Andy called on the help of a few authors.

Andy explains:

“As ever, real life drama intrudes on the creative process and when it became clear that I wouldn’t have the time to finish the collection, I decided to give two of my story ideas to two other authors, as well as use Sharon’s short story sequel to A Very Private Haunting, as it fit the theme of the book. And that theme is, as the title suggests, tying up loose ends left over throughout the original run of the Lethbridge-Stewart range.”

The collections features three stories written by Andy; Hide No More (which sees the Brigadier reunited with an old friend) and O Brother, Where Art Thou (Owain returns home to discover a family secret that changes everything), and the two-part The Stories We Tell (in which Anne is visited by an old friend and discovers she has one final mission to undertake), which bookends the collection. The Arrival, which brings the Star Maidens of Drahb to Earth, is written by Tim Gambrell, and Tall Tales, written by John Peel, brings back Evans who has some bad news to share. The collection is topped off by Remnant of a Haunting by Sharon Bidwell, which sees Anne returning to the Glencross, the scene of the novel A Very Private Haunting.

Keren Williams, Publishing Co-ordinator, says:

“It’s a great little collection, with a nice mix of sci-fi, ghost stories, and some solid real-world drama. The Stories We Tell is a particularly touching tale, bringing as it does a parallel between the fictional life of Anne Travers and the real life of a Doctor Who fan who died in 2016 at the young age of only sixteen.”

The cover features brand new art by Adrian Salmon. Andy Frankham-Allen explains:

“It was important to me that this book was dedicated to the family of Rhys Rubery, my young friend who died three years ago, and so Adrian did a wonderful little portrait of Rhys for the cover.”

Blurb:

Events in life are rarely tied up in a neat little bow. There are always loose ends. And for Anne Bishop, nee Travers, nearing the end of her life, this is painfully true.

She receives a visit from a friend she thought lost to her and shares stories about loose ends that were tied up at the last minute.

These include a return to Glencross and dealing with fallout of the events of ‘A Very Private Haunting’, the arrival on Earth of the Star Maidens of Drahb who are in search of the Dominators, an unexpected reunion between the Brigadier and a friend he thought dead for nineteen years, a visit home for Owain Vine and the discovery of a family secret that will change his life forever, and an awkward visit for Lance Corporal Evans to the mother of his dead sister.

At the end of all these tales Anne discovers that one more mission awaits her, when she learns the true story of Rhys Rubery… This collection also features an exclusive sample of the forthcoming novel ‘Downtime 2’.

The Doctor Who Cast Join BBC Children In Need

The Doctor Who Cast Join BBC Children In Need

Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker made time (and space) in her busy schedule saving the universe to bring the TARDIS to this year’s Children in Need special.

The Timelord continued building anticipation for the upcoming 12th series of the science fiction series by popping into the BBC’s charity telethon on Friday night (November 15).

The segment told the story of a brave young girl called Anastasia, who’d used drama classes through Children in Need to rebuild her confidence. Talking to Tess Daly in studio, she explained how the CiN-funded programme changed her life.

“It’s very creative and we get to make lots of friends. The adults are very nice and we get to perform a show at the end,” she explained to Tess.

Image

Tess then shared a video with the Doctor Who cast sending best wishes to Anastasia live from America since she’s a massive fan of the show, but signal interruptions cut off the message.

With one blast of her Sonic Screwdriver, the TARDIS materialised behind the Children in Need video screen to surprise Anastasia — as Jodie, Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill arrived on stage!

“You look like someone who is going to need your own Sonic Screwdriver,” Jodie told the beaming girl as she handed off a brand new Screwdriver, adding: “From one Doctor to the next!”

Fans can expect something special next weekend as well, after the show’s official Twitter account encouraged fans to “make space” on Doctor Who Day (November 23).

The BBC did confirm earlier this week that showrunner Chris Chibnall has added three new writers and four new directors to his staff, in addition to bringing back veterans Vinay Patel (‘Demons of the Punjab’), Ed Hime (‘It Takes You Away’) and Pete McTighe (‘Kerblam!’).

Some eagle-eyed fans also recently spotted one of the show’s most iconic monsters during filming of one of the upcoming series 12 episodes, though the BBC has yet to confirm their return.

Don’t forget that you can still donate to Children in Need by visiting the website, or calling 0345 7 33 22 33. To donate £10 text the word DONATE to 70410, to donate £20 text DONATE to 70420 or to donate £30 text DONATE to 70430.

Doctor Who will early next year on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US.

Well that was just lovely, and the true power that Doctor Who still has. The absolute joy on that little girls’ face. Wonderful. Well done Jodie. @MandipGill@TosinCole #DoctorWho
