New Lethbridge-Stewart Novel A New Reality to Explore.

New Lethbridge-Stewart Novel A New Reality to Explore.

Candy Jar Books is proud to announce the second novel in its seventh series of Lethbridge-Stewart novels, released late October 2019!

The second novel in the Bloodlines sequence of novels is The Shadowman, by returning novelist Sharon Bidwell.

The Shadowman is set in an alternative 1978, and serves as a sequel to Sharon’s previous novel, A Very Private Haunting. It picks up a thread left over from that novel, set in a world where Lethbridge-Stewart never took part in the London Event, and was never involved in the creation of UNIT. Instead it’s a world where Anne Travers became a founding member of that august taskforce. It also features a new version of her husband, Bill Bishop, as they head to France to celebrate their wedding anniversary.

Sharon Bidwell is no stranger to the world of Lethbridge-Stewart, having written a couple of short stories and one novel previously. Outside of Lethbridge-Stewart, she’s a multi-genre author with many works to her name. And in January 2020, Sharon has her first foray into Doctor Who proper released, after being introduced to Big Finish by Andy Frankham-Allen. Short Trips: The Infinite Today is available for pre-order from Big Finish productions.

Range Editor Andy Frankham-Allen said:

“I take Sharon wherever I go. She’s worked with me on many projects now, so it was inevitable when I heard that Big Finish were looking for more female authors, that I would put her name forward. I’ve read her story, had some input, and it’s going to be a lot of fun for fans of Jo Grant and the Eleventh Doctor. In terms of The Shadowman, Sharon sent it to me some time ago, at which point it wasn’t part of any particular novel sequence, but rather a continuation of the ongoing narrative began in 2015. But once the Bloodlines concept was developed, it seemed to me that Sharon’s story was a perfect fit, with a few continuity tweaks here and there to place it in an alternative reality in which the events of A Very Private Haunting still happened – more or less as featured in that novel.”

Author Sharon Bidwell said:

“Some stories feel unfinished. When I wrote A Very Private Haunting, I left a few threads I was unsure I would ever pick up again. I already had the title of the book long figured out together with my basic idea when asked to write another novel in the range. My book, to once again feature Anne Travers, couldn’t have come together more perfectly, though with consequences I never imagined at the beginning. The Shadowman features a returning character from A Very Private Haunting, which allowed me to play with someone who comes across as a thoroughly nasty character, though I see a greater depth to him. I’m a multi-genre writer, though I tend to gravitate back to what I call dark fiction, and there’s definitely darkness in The Shadowman. I’m finishing some lighter projects at present intending to work on my first horror novel in the new year after completing some preliminary notes and research, so going through The Shadowman again recently has been very useful in that regard.”

The cover is by a new artist to the Lethbridge-Stewart range, Paul Cowan.

Paul said:

“Joining the team at Candy Jar is quite literally a dream come true. I get to illustrate stories featuring much-loved characters from my childhood. I have the honour of seeing my work adorn the covers of some quite wonderful stories by a very talented team of writers, many of whose works line the bookshelves in my studio. I get to join a list of hugely talented artists I admire and who have been major influences on my life and work. But best of all, I get to finally work with my friend, something that’s been long overdue.”

Shaun Russell, head of publishing at Candy Jar, said:

“I’ve known Paul for thirty years. He’s a great artist with a flair for almost any style. He is particularly well-known for his beautifully illustrated trading cards and TV tie-in comic strips. When the opportunity for him to do a cover came up, I could think of no one better to tackle the Shadowman.”

Paul continues:

“With the cover to The Shadowman, I wanted to evoke the feeling of 1970s Doctor Who. I knew I wanted to homage the Pertwee years, so the illustration of Anne Travers was very much based on the character of Section Leader Shaw from Inferno, whilst the background should be instantly recognisable to any true Doctor Who fan. The Shadowman himself is actually straight out of one of my own nightmares and when Shaun described the character to me, I knew immediately how he should appear. I used pen and ink with a base wash of alcohol marker, embellished with coloured polychromous pencils and white ink for highlights. I then added lighting effects in Paint Shop Pro, which is my go-to software of choice. It’s a relatively new style for me and something I’m still trying to perfect.”

Paul, who has MS, is raising money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. If you visit https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/artrelief and donate £5 your name will go into a hat and the winner, chosen at random, will get a hand-drawn A4 portrait of your chosen subject. This can be a friend, relative, child, pet, favourite animal or celebrity. If you donate £15 (or equivalent) or more, then Paul will draw you an A4 portrait of your choice.

Blurb:

A new reality has been created by the temporal disruption ripping through the causal nexus. Welcome to 1978… with a difference.

Anne Travers, co-founder of UNIT, and her husband, Bill, are celebrating their wedding anniversary in France, which is the perfect opportunity for Anne to catch-up with an old friend; Madeleine Bonnaire.

At the institute owned by Madeleine’s father, one professor is more interested in his own project than any work for which Bonnaire has hired him. His need for secrecy and his attitude irritates his assistant, Paul Larousse, who would prefer to dwell on his feelings for Madeleine. Meanwhile, Victor Bonnaire is not at all happy to hear of Anne’s visit, not least of all because he’s always viewed Anne as a bad influence on his daughter.

What seems like a simple case of familial friction takes a bleak turn when a local unknown threat makes the news. Suspicion abounds and throws Anne and Bill into an unexpected mystery. What is the strange threat, and does it present a direct danger to anybody at the institute? Or to those who ask too many questions? Unable to walk away from her friend, Anne has no option but to investigate, little knowing she’s about to face the darkest shadow of her life so far.

The Shadowman is due out at the end of October 2019, and can be pre-ordered now either on its own or as part of the Bloodlines bundle.

Congratulations are in order for David Tennant and his wife Georgia, who have welcomed their fifth child together.

Georgia revealed the news with an Instagram post showing her husband carrying their newborn in a carrier, alongside a photo of his Good Omens co-star Michael Sheen, who welcomed a child of his own back in September.

“An angel, a demon and a couple of babies,” she captioned. “What could possibly go wrong?”

Plenty of fans (and fellow Doctor Who star Tracy Ann Oberman) sent their congratulations and best wishes to the couple in the comments.

David and Georgia met on the set of Doctor Who series 4 episode ‘The Doctor’s Daughter’, where Georgia (who is the daughter of former Doctor Peter Davison) played The Doctor’s genetic clone/daughter.

David is the father of four of Georgia’s children, while he adopted her older son Ty from a past relationship after they married in 2012.

Recently, the former Doctor opened up about how the fame of the show left him feeling:

“Intimidated” and “scared”. “The way you imagine it’s going to be is not the way it is at all,” David said.

“It’s much more exposing, and the imaginative leap you’ve had that it will give you status or make you invulnerable is all wrong. It makes you very vulnerable, and very raw.”

The Doctor sat in a luxurious anteroom deep in the heart of the Capitol, the governing building of the Time Lords. He was waiting to hear if he would live or die. He had been condemned to death for Time Interference by the High Council according to the strict provisions of Time Lord law. Then a visitor from the mysterious Celestial Intervention Agency had told him of a possible way out. The Council apparently were still undecided.

The Doctor felt tired, as if he’d been waiting here a lifetime.

A guard appeared at the door. ‘Come, Doctor, they are ready for you.’

The Doctor was marched along a corridor and into a larger room. He stood gazing curiously around him. He was in a small audience hall with a circle of benches surrounding the Lord High Chancellor’s chair. Elaborately robed Time Lords occupied the seats.

‘Well, Doctor,’ said the Lord High Chancellor, ‘which is it to be, exile or death?’

‘Exile would suit you best,’ said the Doctor. ‘If I was executed there would be a terrible scandal. Disappearance into exile would give a better chance of hushing the whole thing up.’

‘It would also have the advantage of preserving your life,’ said the Lord High Chancellor.

‘A formidable argument,’ agreed the Doctor. ‘What do you want me to do?’

‘It’s a matter of a mission,’ said the Lord High Chancellor. ‘Several missions in fact. It has come to our notice, Doctor, that while your interference has sometimes run contrary to our interests, on other occasions it has assisted them. We have a number of missions in which, under our guidance and control, you can work for us.’

Oh, do you! thought the Doctor. But he said nothing.

They made an incongruous pair. The High Chancellor stood tall and stately in his owing robes. The Doctor’s check trousers were more than a little baggy. His well-worn black coat had seen better days, and his shirt was definitely wilting. His gently comical face was crowned by a mop of black hair.

‘Now to the first,’ said the Lord High Chancellor. ‘There is an unprepossessing planet called Karn in which we take some interest.’

‘In which you take considerable interest,’ said the Doctor. ‘Karn is the home of the Sacred Flame, which creates the Elixir of Life. Many Time Lords would have died without its restorative effect.’

‘Something we prefer to keep quiet about,’ said the Lord High Chancellor. ‘Now we have received word that Karn has been occupied by a hostile force.’

‘How did you receive word?’ said the Doctor.

The Lord High Chancellor paused. ‘You know, I am sure, that Karn is the home of the Sisterhood, a semi-supernatural cult. Personally, I believe its proceedings are little more than mystic mumbo-jumbo. However, it appears to have occasional erratic glimpses into the future. Recently, one of our telepaths received a message with the news I have given you, insisting that it was of vital importance to the Time Lord race. Whether this is true or not we simply do not know.’

To be continued…

Doctor Who Back For Christmas?

Doctor Who Back For Christmas?

Image result for doctor who christmas special 2019

According to a report by Cult Box today, a Doctor Who Christmas special is currently in production in addition to the ten episodes of Doctor Who Series 12.

The same person who discovered the existence of the extra episode has now discovered who is directing the special and, according to his CV, Lee Haven Jones is directing a Doctor Who Christmas special.

“He has directed a number of drama projects, both series and one-offs, for the BBC, ITV and S4C. Lee was lead director on ITV’s THE BAY and also shot the DOCTOR WHO Christmas special in 2019.”

It should be noted that Haven-Jones’ CV states that he shot the Christmas special in 2019, not that the special airs in 2019.

When it was revealed that there would only be a Doctor Who New Year’s special in 2019, BBC’s entertainment correspondent Lizo Mzimba said:

While there is a recognition that fans might want a series every single year, Doctor Who has almost uniquely complex filming requirements and a lengthy post-production period.

The filming of the special is currently happening with the most recent filming at the Capital Quarter car park in Cardiff on October 9.

With such a “lengthy post-production period” and the previous assertion by BBC News that after the festive special on New Year’s Day, Jodie Whittaker won’t be seen in the TARDIS again next year.if this is a Christmas special, it likely won’t air until Christmas 2020.

Lee Haven-Jones also directed Block 2 of Doctor Who Series 12, currently consisting of Episodes 2 and 3, though the order the episodes air can change as they did for Series 11.

It is worth noting that a previous CV notation on the director of the Doctor Who Series 11 New Year’s special, Wayne Yip initially said, “DOCTOR WHO CHRISTMAS SPECIAL”.

For now, it looks as if the Doctor Who Christmas special is back, unless plans change between now and then.

We will continue to bring you news of Doctor Who production progress as it occurs.
