The missing Doctor Who adventure ‘The Abominable Snowmen’ comes to vinyl

The missing Doctor Who adventure ‘The Abominable Snowmen’ comes to vinyl

3 x 180g heavyweight white vinyl

Demon Music Group presents The Abominable Snowmen, a classic six-part adventure starring Patrick Troughton as the Doctor and introducing one of his most popular enemies, the Yeti.

In this classic ‘lost’ adventure (only one of the six episodes still remains in the BBC archives), first shown between September and November 1967, the TARDIS materialises in the Himalayan mountains circa 1930, where Professor Travers has been trying to track down the legendary abominable snowmen. The Doctor soon discovers that the Yeti do exist, but as the servants of a terrible force – the Great Intelligence.

Presented across 3 x heavyweight 180g pieces of vinyl, this narrated TV soundtrack evokes another classic Doctor Who adventure in all its aural magnificence. The haunting sounds of the windswept Himalayas, the hypnotic chanting of Tibetan monks, the insistent bleeping of the Yeti control devices, and the terrifying roar of the creatures themselves are all accompanied by the eerie sonics of Ron Grainer and Delia Derbyshire’s classic theme tune.

Ben Stanley, Head of Product & Marketing, Demon Music Group said:

The Daleks’ Master Plan and The Evil of the Daleks have proved hugely popular on vinyl and we’re very pleased to be following up these releases with the story of another classic Doctor Who enemy. The Yeti may be fluffier than the Daleks but they’re certainly no less terrifying!”

Written by Mervyn Haisman and Henry Lincoln, this was the Yeti’s debut TV appearance, and they would soon return to menace the Doctor in another adventure. Linking narration is provided by Frazer Hines (Jamie) and the cast includes Deborah Watling as Victoria, Jack Watling as Professor Travers, David Spenser as Thonmi and Wolfe Morris as Padmasambhava.

The records will be released on 27th September 2019 (including a 500-limited run Amazon Exclusive) and are available for pre-order now.

The Seeds of Doom, Resurrection of the Daleks and more come to BBC Audio in August and September 2019

The Seeds of Doom, Resurrection of the Daleks and more come to BBC Audio in August and September 2019

Doctor Who

This August and September see the release of a range of brand new Doctor Who audiobooks, from lost serials from the TV archive to a brand new Dalek novelisation. Here’s a look at what’s available to buy on CD and download from BBC Audio in August and September 2019:

Terry Molloy reads this brand new novelisation of the classic television adventure featuring the Fifth Doctor.

The TARDIS is ensnared in a time corridor, catapulting it into derelict docklands on 20th century Earth. The Doctor and his companions, Tegan and Turlough, stumble on a warehouse harbouring fugitives from the future at the far end of the corridor – and are soon under attack from a Dalek assault force.

The Doctor’s oldest enemies have set in motion an intricate and sinister plot to resurrect their race from the ashes of an interstellar war. For the Daleks’ plans to succeed, they must set free their creator, Davros, from a galactic prison – and force the Doctor to help them achieve total control over time and space. But the embittered Davros has ideas of his own…

35 years after its first TV transmission, Doctor Who fan-favourite Resurrection of the Daleks is novelised at last, by the author of the original script, Eric Saward.

Terry Molloy, who played Davros in the BBC TV series, reads the novelisation, with Dalek voices by Nicholas Briggs.

Doctor Who: Resurrection of the Daleks is available on Amazon and Audible now.

Steven Pacey reads this suspenseful novelisation of a classic TV adventure for the Fifth Doctor.

When the TARDIS is sabotaged and becomes dimensionally unstable, its internal fabric begins to dissolve, and Nyssa is drawn into a junction with a strangely deserted spacecraft. The Doctor, Tegan and Turlough follow in pursuit, and discover the shocking purpose of Terminus.

The Doctor forms an uneasy alliance with two space pirates, whilst Tegan and Turlough become frighteningly enmeshed in the spaceship’s infrastructure. For Nyssa, meanwhile, the nature of a sudden illness which engulfs her will have life changing consequences.

Steven Pacey reads Stephen Gallagher’s novelisation of his 1983 TV serial featuring the Fifth Doctor, as played on screen by Peter Davison.

Doctor Who: Terminus is available on Amazon and Audible now.

Four more thrilling soundtrack adventures from the early days of Doctor Who, featuring serials lost from the TV archive.

The pictures may be lost, but each of these stories survives as a soundtrack recording. Remastered and with additional linking narration, they can be enjoyed once more. In The Daleks’ Master Plan, the Daleks have stolen the Time Destructor and are threatening to destroy the fabric of time itself. Pursued across time and space, the TARDIS crew are in grave danger. In The Massacre, the TARDIS materialises in Paris, 1572, a time of danger and religious strife. When Steven witnesses an execution, he believes the Doctor has been executed in front of his eyes. In The Celestial Toymaker, the travellers arrive in the domain of the Toymaker, where failure to win a series of games could result in them becoming playthings for eternity. In The Savages, the TARDIS arrives on a distant and seemingly idyllic world, but the Doctor, Steven and Dodo discover that it hides a terrible secret.

Special linking narration is provided by Peter Purves, who also recalls his time making the original episodes in a bonus interview. Also included is an edition of BBC Radio’s Archive on 4 from 2009. In ‘Doctor Who — The Lost Episodes’ Shaun Ley investigates what happened to the missing episodes of Doctor Who from the 1960s. The CD editions also feature PDF files featuring high quality scans of the original BBC TV camera scripts.

Doctor Who: The Lost TV Episodes – Collection Two is available on Amazon and Audible now.

Michael Kilgarriff reads this thrilling novelisation of a classic TV adventure for the Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith.

In the snowy wastes of blizzard-swept Antarctica, a strange pod-like object is unearthed, buried deep in the ice. Curiosity turns to alarm as the pod begins to grow – then horror when suddenly it cracks open and a snaking green tendril shoots out, mercilessly seeking the nearest live victim.

In London, botanical experts are bewildered, and the Doctor is called in to fight this unknown horror. But will he be in time to save Earth from the rapidly spreading tentacles of the Krynoid, giant man-eating monster from an alien world?

Michael Kilgarriff, who played several roles in the BBC TV series, reads Philip Hinchcliffe’s novelisation of the TV serial by Robert Banks Stewart, first published by Target Books in 1977.

Doctor Who and the Seeds of Doom is available on Amazon and Audible now.

Doctor Who spin-off from Big Finish will pit the Daleks against the Movellans once more

The New Counter Measures: The Dalek Gambit - Big Finish

The Daleks will be waging war against an old foe, with the inhabitants of planet Earth caught in the middle, in an exciting new Doctor Who spin-off story from Big Finish Productions.

The robotic Movellans, who first battled the tyrannical tanks from Skaro in the 1979 TV story ‘Destiny of the Daleks’, are returning for two special stories – ‘The Movellan Manoeuvre‘ and ‘The Dalek Gambit‘ – also featuring the Counter-Measures team who first appeared in 1988’s ‘Remembrance of the Daleks’.

Big Finish’s Counter-Measures series continues the adventures of Professor Rachel Jensen (Pamela Salem), Group Captain Ian Gilmore (Simon Williams) and Allison Williams (Karen Gledhill) – who now work for Sir Toby Kinsella (Hugh Ross) – as they battle threats to England in the 1960s and 1970s.

They’ll once against battle the Daleks, and meet the Movellans, in a two-parter beginning with ‘The Movellan Manoeuvre‘ by writer John Dorney.

The New Counter-Measures: The Movellan Manoeuvre - Big Finish

In this opening adventure Lady Suzanne Clare, glamorous international arms dealer specialising in alien tech and arch-foe of the Intrusion Counter-Measures Group, is back. And she’s branched out. She’s now moved into household technology and is rolling out a device designed to help out with chores around the house. As the launch date looms, Rachel Jensen and her team are determined to find out what she’s really up to and stop her.

What do these devices actually do? What exactly is her latest plan? And what does it all have to do with an insidious alien menace?

It’s time for a home invasion.

The story continues in ‘The Dalek Gambit’ by Roland Moore: after the Movellan attack, the New Counter Measures team discovers that key scientists who helped the Movellans are being murdered. Rachel Jensen realises that the Daleks are behind it.

Soon, the team finds themselves in the middle of a desperate war between Daleks and Movellans. As casualties mount, the Daleks plan to explode a bomb to wipe out the Movellans. Unfortunately it will also destroy all life on Earth.

Rachel finds herself struggling to defuse the bomb as the clock ticks down. The stakes are high and this time not everyone will make it out alive…

Counter-Measures: ‘The Movellan Manoeuvre‘ and ‘The Dalek Gambit‘ are available from bigfinish.com at £8.99 on download or £10.99 on CD, or in a bundle at £17 on download or £20 on CD.

ONE WORLD, ONE LAST CHANCE: AWARD-WINNNING AUTHOR ARRESTED

ONE WORLD, ONE LAST CHANCE: AWARD-WINNNING AUTHOR ARRESTED

Sue Hampton, the award-winning author of Thinner Than Water (“enjoyable and fascinating” Beverley Knight), Just for One Day (“terrific” – Michael Morpurgo) and Candy Jar Books’ first Lucy Wilson instalment, Avatars of the Intelligence, has been arrested.

On 15th April 2019, Sue peacefully occupied Waterloo Bridge, as part of Extinction Rebellion’s month of protest against the “criminal inactivity” of the government in the face of today’s climate crisis. Their cause is a popular one – its urgency couldn’t be greater, the science any clearer. And yet in April alone, over a thousand protestors were arrested.

The granddaughter of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Lucy Wilson is no stranger to radical action herself. And Sue’s short story sees her in the thick of the action – on the site, in fact, where Sue was herself arrested, Waterloo Bridge.

For figures such as Sue, the repercussions of a criminal record are potentially severe. A one-time primary school teacher, Sue has been a professional author for over a decade, and much of her time is spent touring schools giving talks to students across the country. Her theme, both in her work and her talks, is the importance of love and respect. As a long term sufferer of alopecia universalis, and an ambassador for Alopecia UK, it is a subject close to her heart.

Head of publishing at Candy Jar Books, Shaun Russell, explains why he thought it was important to give Sue this platform:

“We’ve all seen the news – the predictions for the coming decades if we don’t change our ways. Not everyone will agree with Extinction Rebellion’s way of doing things, but everyone has to agree they’re right about one thing: we’re running out of time. I’ve been working with Sue for years; she’s always been tireless in her pursuit of what’s right – whether it’s her work raising money for Alopecia UK, or her tours of the country’s schools talking to school children. The idea that she might be prevented from carrying out her work in schools because of a criminal record is ridiculous. All she’s doing is campaigning for a sane climate policy – for a future for our children. For what it’s worth, we wanted to show that her publisher was behind her.”

Editorial Coordinator in Candy Jar, Will Rees, says:

“Sue wrote the first Lucy Wilson novel, and she was a big part of making Lucy not just a tireless in her fight against extra-terrestrials, but forthright in her social and political views. Like many I’ve been inspired by the speeches of Greta Thunberg; the current wave of climate activism is a fight being led by the next generation. Thanks to Sue, Lucy is a very modern young woman, and we have no doubt that the girl from Ogmore-by-Sea would also be fighting for our planet.”

Doctor Who departure rumours branded “nonsense” by insiders

Doctor Who departure rumours branded “nonsense” by insiders

Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chibnall (Ray Burmiston, BBC)

Rumours have swirled over the last couple of days that Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall has quit the long-running BBC sci-fi series, with unsubstantiated reports also suggesting that lead actor Jodie Whittaker has departed in sympathy.

However, according to RadioTimes.com we now understand that there is no truth in the speculation about Chibnall and/or Whittaker’s departures, with show insiders bewildered by false rumours that they say bear little resemblance to the reality of series 12 filming.

“This is all total nonsense,” a well-placed Doctor Who source told RadioTimes.com.

“This has originated and spread through the online rumour mill.”

Apparently, the new rumours originated on a popular Doctor Who message-board before being spread on social media platforms, with many fans anticipating an official announcement about either Chibnall or Whittaker’s departure imminently, while also speculating about which other regular writers could be stepping in to take over.

However, many others pointed out the unlikely nature of the longtime Doctor Who writer departing the showrunner position mid-series, while some noted that similar rumours relating to Chibnall’s exit had been suggested and disproven on more than one occasion since he took over the top job in 2017.

As it stands, both Chibnall and Whittaker are set to continue filming series 12 in the coming weeks and months, though exactly what they’re shooting is a bit of a mystery – apart from the return of the Rhino-like Judoon and hints of a wartime France episode, little to no information has been shared about where the Thirteenth Doctor and her friends (played by Bradley Walsh, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole) will go in the eagerly-awaited new episodes.

Wherever they do go, though, one thing’s for sure – the team aren’t going their separate ways just yet.

Doctor Who will return to BBC1 in early 2020

David Tennant says it would be “fun” to return for Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary

David Tennant says it would be “fun” to return for Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary

Just weeks after John Barrowman was pushing for a reunion movie of his Doctor Who co-stars, former Tenth Doctor David Tennant has revealed that he’s also open to a return to the sci-fi series.

Speaking in a video interview to promote 10th anniversary screenings of The End of Time (his final two-part episode as time-travelling hero the Doctor), Tennant hinted that he’d be up for popping back for the sci-fi series’ 60th anniversary in 2023, having previously appeared in 2013’s 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor.

“Who knows?,” Tennant said when asked if he’d return to the series again. “People ask me this… like it’s my decision when I’ll just stroll back on set on Doctor Who and go, ‘Right! Turn over! Here I am!’ – it doesn’t really work like that.

“I suppose the opportunity has historically been there for Doctors to return to an extent,” he continued. “There would come a point where I wouldn’t be able to get away with it. I wouldn’t be able to fit in the suit, or get my hair to stand up at the end like I used to.”

“There’s a 60th anniversary in a few years, and the question will inevitably come up. But it won’t be for me to decide.”

“[But] it would be fun to do,” he added, citing his affection for fellow Who incarnations as a possible reason to return.

“Jodie [Whittaker], Peter [Capaldi] and Matt [Smith] are all mates now. It would be wonderful to be on set with them. Chris [Eccleston]… I don’t know as well but I’m a huge admirer of him and I’ve always enjoyed meeting him, so it’d be fun if we were all on set together.”

“It’s not for me to say,” he concluded. “The more I speculate, the more I’ll end up getting myself in trouble…”

So there you have it – the very first sparks of an episode we’re already calling The Other Five Doctors has begun. Now if they can just get John Barrowman and Billie Piper involved too, we’ll really have a new Golden Age on our hands…
