Lost Doctor Who stories return on audio

Lost Doctor Who stories return on audio

Lost Doctor Who stories return on audio

Two classic Doctor Who television stories that didn’t get past the pre-production stage are being resurrected this year as full-cast audio productions. Peter Davison and Colin Baker return as the Fifth and Sixth Doctors in two fantastic releases by Big Finish Productions in association with BBC Studios.

The iconic British science fiction series of Doctor Who has been running for over 55 years, and it has inspired and nurtured numerous writers, directors, performers and creatives. Throughout the process of producing the TV series, however, many stories didn’t make it to our screens for a variety of reasons. Big Finish Productions is now bringing back two of the stories that were previously abandoned in a production office drawer in the 1980s.

The Ultimate Evil by writer Wally K Daly and Nightmare Country by Stephen Gallagher are returning on audio this November. In The Ultimate Evil, Colin Baker’s colourful Sixth Doctor and Nicola Bryant’s Peri are on a holiday gone awry, while Nightmare Country reunites Peter Davison’s Fifth Doctor with companion Tegan played by Janet Fielding and Turlough played by Mark Strickson.

The Ultimate Evil by Wally K Daly
The Doctor and Peri’s holiday plans go awry when they cross paths with the slimy super-salesman Mordant and his scheme to start a war.

Nightmare Country by Stephen Gallagher
The Doctor wakes up on a planet of relics, a dead world, a hostile world… He has no memory of who he is, or how he got to be here.

He’d better remember soon, because the very structure of reality is at risk and it all has something to do with that strange blue tomb with the light on top.

Wally K Daly tells us more: “I wrote The Ultimate Evil for TV in 1984 but sadly it was never made because Michael Grade decided to take Doctor Who off the air. I adapted it as a novel some years later, but am delighted to bring it back now as an audio play. It’s proof that it’s impossible to kill Doctor Who!”

And Stephen Gallagher told us: “Nightmare Country was my detailed pitch for Season 21 and would have been my third story for the show, but for a terse note from the production office that read, ‘You’ve sent us another million-dollar movie and we just can’t do them‘. Some ideas you can recycle, some parts you can reuse; but where do you find another show like Who? So my million dollar movie went into the files and I moved on, until the day my and the Doctor’s paths crossed again. Sometimes, it seems, you just have to stay ready and keep the faith.”

David Richardson, producer of Doctor Who – The Lost Stories adds: “Can it really be 10 years since The Lost Stories range began? It was one of my first commissions as a producer at Big Finish as I’d proposed to Nicholas Briggs and Jason Haigh-Ellery the idea of bringing these missing treasures from Doctor Who’s history to audio. The original intention was to make all of the episodes that would have been Season 23, and although The Nightmare Fair and Mission to Magnus were adapted and released on audio, at the time we were unable to secure The Ultimate Evil.

“Wind forward to 2019 and we now have Wally adapting his own script of The Ultimate Evil, which will be released alongside Stephen Gallagher’s Nightmare Country. The latter was brought to me by Guy Adams who has script edited Stephen’s adaptation, and it’s a wonderful piece of Season 21 mind-blowing fantasy. How brilliant to be able to launch them both in the range’s tenth anniversary year!”

Out for release this November (the month that Doctor Who was first broadcast back in 1963), these two Lost Storiesare available for pre-order now at £14.99 on CD or £12.99 on download each.

Or why not save money and purchase both stories together in a bundle priced at £28 on CD or £25 on download.

** Spoiler Alert ** Judoon to return as Gloucester hosts filming

The Doctor, played by Jodie Whittaker, meeting a Judoon Captain
Jodie Whittaker, who plays the 13th doctor, will be back on screens in 2020

It is definitely not the first place you’d expect to encounter a terrifying monster.

But Gloucester is where one of Doctor Who’s most famous villains, the Judoon, is set to make a return.

Jodie Whittaker, who plays the 13th doctor, is currently involved in filming in places like the city’s cathedral.

The Judoon were last seen terrorising David Tennant, as the 10th doctor, in the 2007 episode Smith and Jones.

Silent Witness and Doctor Foster star Neil Stuke is among the actors set to appear in the series.

‘Taking no prisoners’

Chris Chibnall, Showrunner, said: “No! Sho! Blo! The Judoon are storming back into Doctor Who in full force, and the streets of Gloucester aren’t safe.

“If anyone has anything to hide, confess now. The Judoon are taking no prisoners, and will stop at nothing to fulfil their mission.”

The 11th series of the BBC’s show, and Whittaker’s first as the Time Lord, ended in December and the programme will not be back for a full run until 2020.

The next series is currently being filmed on location in College Street and inside Gloucester Cathedral.

LETHBRIDGE-STEWART SPECIAL EDITION OF HAVOC FILES 3!

LETHBRIDGE-STEWART SPECIAL EDITION OF HAVOC FILES 3!

Candy Jar Books is proud to announce a special edition of The HAVOC Files 3 is now up for pre-order.

Originally published at the start of 2017 as a limited print-run, The HAVOC Files 3 joined its predecessors in selling out quickly. The HAVOC Files 3: Special Edition is a reprint with a difference, containing as it does updated editions of previous stories, and two short stories available for the first time in print.

Head of Publishing Shaun Russell explains:

“With the success of The HAVOC Files 2: Special Edition earlier this year, it was a forgone conclusion that we’d do a special edition reprint of The HAVOC Files 3. As with the previous release, we decided to look at it as an opportunity to revise a few of the stories, fixing continuity errors and the like, as well as bringing to print two short stories only previously available digitally.”

Range Editor Andy Frankham-Allen continues:

“This time around we decided to replace The Lost Skin part two (available as part of the larger whole in The Lost Skin novella) with Steven Walton’s The Case of the Missing Fairy. This was originally released digitally for Christmas 2017. Steven is taking the opportunity to expand it somewhat for the print edition. Joining it will be another previous Christmas free story; this time A Funny Turn by Alyson Leeds. Alyson is a solid writer, who wrote last year’s highly popular Fear of the Web. A Funny Turn is set during the earlier days of Lethbridge-Stewart’s career, and sees him being targeted by the Great Intelligence in a rather unique way.”

Blurb:

Strange fungoid creatures in Hull, a deserted Scottish village at Hallowe’en, wishes coming true, and a special mission for Samson and Evans in Llanfairfach. Young Ali Lethbridge-Stewart and his friends investigate strange happenings in Pengriffen, and Professor Travers returns to Tibet, only to find he’s being followed by enemy agents.

Ten short stories, including two previously only available in digital format, published in print for the first time.

‘A Funny Turn’ by Alyson Leeds. Newly promoted Captain Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart finds himself under attack from a most unlikely adversary!

‘The Case of the Missing Fairy’ by Steven Walton. Christmas 1982 and the Brigadier is asked to investigate a most peculiar crime.

CANDY JAR BOOKS ANNOUNCES LETHBRIDGE-STEWART SHORT STORY COLLECTION WINNER!

CANDY JAR BOOKS ANNOUNCES LETHBRIDGE-STEWART SHORT STORY COLLECTION WINNER!

Candy Jar Books is pleased to announce the winner of the Lethbridge-Stewart Short Story Competition. The winning story, Gone Fishin’, is written by Megan Fizell from Maine, USA.

Shaun Russell, head of publishing at Candy Jar, says:

“All the stories this year have been outstanding and we would like to thank all those that entered, but there can be only one winner. Megan has written a wonderful story that took us all by surprise. Her instinct for characterisation is refreshingly different. In particular, we liked the way she portrayed the burgeoning friendship of the Brig, Sally, Anne and Bill. We look forward to working with her in the future.”

Andy Frankham-Allen, range editor of Lethbridge-Stewart says:

“This year the level of entries was particularly high, both in number and quality. And, although these stories are not part of the Lethbridge-Stewart canon, the entrants didn’t let that stop them exploring their imaginations! Shaun and I split the entries in half; he picked five finalists and I picked four. Our two top picks then went to Keren Williams, so she could pick the winner of the two. I’m delighted that Keren picked Megan’s story, as it’s a touching little tale and it’s always nice to have another female voice brought to the Lethbridge-Stewart range. Which, of course, Megan will as part of her prize for winning the competition.”

Megan Fizell from Maine, USA

Megan Fizell says:

“The inspiration for Gone Fishin’ came as much from Thoreau – ‘simplify, simplify’ – as it did from the desire to give some of the HAVOC crew a well-deserved break. I’m pleased the premise worked as well as it did.”

The book also features eight other exclusive short stories featuring Lethbridge-Stewart at various stages in his life. This is a chance for fans to see the Brigadier like they’ve never seen him before!

The eight stories are:

Day Trip by Alan Darlington

Marooned at Teatime by Ryan Fogarty

Give Me Five Minutes by Mike Warrick

The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by James Connarty

The Eye of the Beholder by Gary J Mack

Summertime Blue by Alexander Whittam

The Mystery of the Locked Room by Beau Waddell

Nightmare at Lavender Lawns by Bedwyr Gullidge

Gone Fishin’ by Megan Fizell

The idea for the Lethbridge-Stewart Short Story Competition came from the company’s commitment to shedding light on fresh writing talent. Since 2015 the Lethbridge-Stewart novels have championed previously unknown authors such as Tim Gambrell and Harry Draper, alongside famous writing names in the Doctor Who universe including John Peel, Nick Walters, Simon A Forward and David A McIntee.
