BBC One viewers were accidentally treated to the next week’s BBC1NI Continuity Announcement toward the end of the premiere airing of the penultimate Doctor Who Series 11 episode It Takes You Away.

“Get a first glimpse of the seasonal special right after this.”

While the voiced announcement was a week early, a trailer for The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos was shown instead.

So a clip or a trailer for the as-yet-untitled Doctor Who New Year’s Day Special will air just after The Battle of Ranskor Av Kolos on Sunday, December 9.

Amazingly, next week’s episode of Doctor Who is already the last of the series, with the show next returning to BBC One for its Christmas special on New Year’s Day.

The finale, titled ‘The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos’, is written by Chris Chibnall and directed by Jamie Childs, who also helmed ‘It Takes You Away’, plus ‘The Woman Who Fell to Earth’ and ‘Demons of the Punjab’.

Check out the trailer below.

The official synopsis reads:

On the planet of Ranskoor Av Kolos lies the remains of a brutal battlefield. But as the Doctor, Graham, Yaz and Ryan answer nine separate distress calls, they discover the planet holds far more secrets. Who is the mysterious commander with no memory? What lies beyond the mists? Who or what are the Ux? The answers will lead the Doctor and her friends towards a deadly reckoning.

The trailer sees a mysterious commander called Paltraki (Games of Thrones‘ Mark Addy) suggest he can’t leave the planet because of “the battle” – whatever that means – and features a harsh and sinister voice that rasps, “You gave me my destiny!” Could this be the voice of the Ux?

Other guest cast members include Downton Abbey‘s Phyllis Logan as Andinio, The Innocents star Percelle Ascott as Delph and Jan Le as Umsang.

The Doctor Who series 11 finale ‘The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos‘ airs on Sunday, December 9 at 6.25pm.

The Doctor Who New Year’s Day special might not actually be about New Year

The decision for Doctor Who to axe its traditional Christmas special in favour of a January 1st episode has proved controversial with fans, but the move to a different festive occasion had some intrigued to see how writer Chris Chibnall could factor the traditions of New Year into the BBC sci-fi series.

But despite the official episode synopsis hinting at a New Year setting, it’s emerged that the story might not take place on that day at all – at least, according to some of the actors in it.

“When we were filming, we didn’t know when it was going to air,” Mandip Gill (who plays Yasmin Khan in Doctor Who) told Radio Times when asked if there were any overt New Year’s themes in the episode.

“We’ve only just found out with you guys.”

This suggests that, unless Gill and her co-star Tosin Cole (who backed up her story) are incredibly unobservant, the story doesn’t really incorporate the episode’s New Year’s Day airdate at all, in contrast to how the Who Christmas specials usually operate.

Generally speaking, the Doctor Who Christmas specials have either been set on or themed around Christmas Day – but from the sounds of it, the unnamed New Year’s special will be a less specific affair.

After all, if it really was playing with the traditional ideas of New Year, all the party poppers, New Year’s resolutions and Auld Lang Syne singalongs would have tipped Gill and Cole off about when the episode was airing. Instead, like us they were left in the dark about the timeslot.

As the New Year begins, a terrifying evil is stirring, from across the centuries of Earth’s history. As the Doctor, Ryan, Graham and Yaz return home, will they be able to overcome the threat to planet Earth?

A synopsis for the New Year’s special

Now, it could be that the some parts of the episode have slipped the pair’s minds – they did shoot it quite a long time ago, after all – and so it’s possible the episode isn’t an entirely standalone story. Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor is definitely gearing up for winter in the first preview pictures, so there does seem to have been some effort to place it in the right time of year.

And who knows? Maybe Gill and Cole are just telling a few white lies in order to keep us in the dark about whatever story Chris Chibnall is plotting for the Tardis team.

“You never know!” Cole teased when we pressed him on some story details.

“You’ve got to wait and see.”

For now, though, we won’t be expecting the Doctor to whip out a sonic party popper on Who Year’s Day. We might just have to make do with a NORMAL hour-long, mysterious Doctor Who episode on top of the full series we just had. Woe is us.

Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker is to be the latest celebrity to read a CBeebies Bedtime Story.

The first female Time Lord will read Ada Twist, Scientist – the third in a series of books by Andrea Beaty and David Roberts – later this month.

“I hope that everyone enjoys it as much as I did,” said the 36-year-old star, calling the experience “an honour”.

Previous Time Lords to read on the show include David Tennant, in 2009, and Christopher Eccleston in 2010.

Whittaker has garnered many positive reviews for her performance as Doctor Who, despite some initial opposition from traditionalist Whovians to having a woman in the role.

Celebrity line-up

The mother-of-one will make her CBeebies debut on 7 December.

Sir Elton John, Dolly Parton and Hollywood stars Orlando Bloom and Ewan McGregor have all read on the show, which airs daily from Monday to Friday.

Last month saw Catastrophe star Rob Delaney become the first celebrity to read a story signed in Makaton, a form of sign language which he used to communicate with his late son Henry who was unable to speak due to a tracheotomy.

“It is such an honour to know that families and friends will be sharing this experience with me,” said Whittaker.

The penultimate episode of the current series of Doctor Who, airs on Sunday at 18:30 GMT.
