Just over a year after he made an unexpected comeback as the Fourth Doctor in a Doctor Who DVD project, iconic star Tom Baker has made another surprise return to the world of the BBC sci-fi series by penning a new novel starring the Time Lord.

Called Scratchman, the book began life in the 1970s during Baker’s tenure as the beloved Fourth Doctor, when between scenes he kicked around ideas for a new story for the series alongside Ian Marter (who played Harry Sullivan in Doctor Who), later writing them up into a script.

Now, after many failed attempts to bring the story to screen over the years (and a few decades where the script languished, forgotten in an archive) Scratchman is finally coming to life in a new novel written by Baker.

“I love the improbability of Doctor Who,” the actor and author said in a release.

“Reason plays no part at all. As in religion, the overriding thing is faith. It may be improbable, but just believe in it and it’ll all come right.”

“When I was approached about the book, I thought, ‘Why not?’” he went on.

“I’m always on the lookout for a novelty. I’m very enthusiastic as I get close to darkness.”

Scratchman is set to be released in hardback in January, as is described by BBC books as “a gripping, white-knuckle thriller almost 40 years in the making.”

A synopsis for the story can also be read below.

What are you afraid of?

The Doctor, Harry and Sarah Jane Smith arrive at a remote Scottish island, when their holiday is cut short by the appearance of strange creatures – hideous scarecrows, preying on the local population. The islanders are living in fear, and the Doctor vows to save them all. But it doesn’t go to plan – the time travellers have fallen into a trap, and Scratchman is coming for them.

With the fate of the universe hanging in the balance, the Doctor must battle an ancient force from another dimension, one who claims to be the Devil.

Scratchman wants to know what the Doctor is most afraid of. And the Doctor’s worst nightmares are coming out to play…

Previous attempts to fund the Scratchman story included Baker accidentally appealing to the British public for money in the newspapers, resulting in the actor receiving young fans’ pocket money that he later returned.

Doctor Who: Scratchman will be released on the 24th January 2019, and is priced at £16.99 (pre-orders £13.88 0n Amazon Prime)

THE LUCY WILSON MYSTERIES: CURSE OF THE MIRROR CLOWNS BOOK LAUNCH

THE LUCY WILSON MYSTERIES: CURSE OF THE MIRROR CLOWNS BOOK LAUNCH

The Lucy Wilson Mysteries novel Curse of the Mirror Clowns.

Candy Jar Books is pleased to announce the official release of The Lucy Wilson Mysteries novel Curse of the Mirror Clowns.

Curse of the Mirror Clowns is written by Cardiff-based film and comic writer Chris Lynch. He feels that this book gives him the opportunity to tackle a personal fear.

The book launch takes place on Saturday the 24th November from 11 until 3 o’clock exclusively at Heroes, Aliens and Monsters Comics in Tonypandy, where a meet and greet with Chris will take place. Supporting the launch, author of Kangazang, Terry Cooper, will be joining Chris.

Chris says of Curse of the Mirror Clowns: “Did you ever think you saw something, just out of the corner of your eye? It happens to me all the time and it freaks me out quite a bit. So, when I got the chance to add my own monster to the Lucy Wilson universe, I knew it had to be a monster that you couldn’t always see. I also wanted it to be a clown because, if there’s something that freaks me out more than things I can’t see then it’s something I can see – clowns. Of course, that’s not all I added – there are plenty of other surprises in there that I hope people will really enjoy. It’s been great fun adding my own strange and spooky elements to Lucy’s world and I hope to back very, very soon.”

Illustrator and fellow author, Terry Cooper, often found impersonating Captain Jack Sparrow all over South Wales, is author of the science fiction trilogy Kangazang!, the third installment of which was recently launched at Cardiff Film and ComicCon. He will be there signing copies of the book and CD (voiced by Sixth Doctor Who Colin Baker).

The final instalment of the Kangazang! trilogy, Kangazang! Small Cosmos continues the adventures of Jeff and Ray as they find half of the galaxy has been taken over by a militaristic army of peanuts. Meanwhile, Jeff’s newborn baby, a highly advanced cyborg, is growing exponentially with terrifying potential. And Marta Vina, the galaxy’s top secret agent is sent on her most important mission of all…

Head of publishing Shaun Russell states that “There will be a range of books for sale on the day, but we also wanted to provide fans with a chance to ask the authors any questions they may have. Whether they’re about the writing process, the worlds they have created or what their favourite colour is!”

Open to all ages, the book launch is a one-time only event that you won’t want to miss!

The Witchfinders leaked on Amazon

The Witchfinders leaked on Amazon

Amazon Prime users who bought the season pass for Doctor Who Series 11  and who attempted to stream the seventh episode of the series, Kerblam! were surprised to find that they were instead given a preview of the eighth episode, The Witchfinders.

The Witchfinders is not due to air until Sunday, November 25th.

Some subscribers posted photos from the the episode on Twitter.

Amazon subscribers who complained that they were not able to view Kerblam! received this message in reply:

I am really sorry for the inconvenience you are facing. It seems the issue is with the content provider, they have uploaded the wrong content.

It is apparently the responsibility of the outfit providing the content, in this case BBC Studios, to upload the content made available to subscribers, not Amazon, itself.

BBC Studios released this statement to io9:

We’re aware that an upcoming episode of Doctor Who was made available to Amazon Prime users in the US in error. We are investigating how this happened and have taken the steps to remove it. BBC Studios would like to apologise if anyone’s enjoyment of the series has been spoiled by this mishap.

Ironically, the episode subscribers were attempting to watch, Kerblam!, features a galactic version of an online retailer and delivery service very similar to Amazon, complete with delivery robots who appear to be an advanced version of the delivery drones Amazon has tested.

The leak has since been fixed and Kerblam! is now available on Amazon Prime instead of The Witchfinders.

Jodie Whittaker defends topical storylines

Jodie Whittaker defends topical storylines

Speaking to the Evening Standard at the Regent Street Christmas lighting, Jodie Whittaker defended Chris Chibnall’s choice of subject matter for Doctor Who Series 11 stories.

“What’s the point of making a show if it doesn’t reflect society today? We have the opportunity with this show like no other to dip to future, to past, to present, to new worlds and time zones. There is never going to be a drought in the stories you can tell. It’s always topical. Chris is a very present-minded person who is very aware of the world he lives in and is passionate about storytelling. It would be wrong of him to not have used the past. He does it in a really beautiful way.”

Whittaker’s mention of the past refers to the episodes of Doctor Who which dealt with the Montgomery Alabama bus boycott in Rosa and Partition in Demons of the Punjab.

A future-set episode, The Tsuranga Conundrum featured a male Gifftan, a species where both genders share equally in childbearing. Another futuristic episode, Kerblam! covered the potential for technology to be used for exploitation.

So far this series, Doctor Who has covered topical social subjects such as blood sport, egotism, deadly competition, racism, autocracy, greed, environmentalism, gender equality, colonialism, religious conflict, the technology revolution, corporate exploitation and terrorism.

Jodie Whittaker’s interview was not entirely weighty, however. She also spoke of her competitiveness with Mandip Gill when it comes to performing stunt work. Whittaker famously performed her own stunt when she jumped from crane to crane in The Woman Who Fell to Earth.

“I’m very competitive — particularly with Mandip — so I thought I need to look cool and thought if Mandip can do it, then I can do it. There are certain moments where [execs] went ‘absolutely not’ because the insurance wouldn’t cover it, but episode one, I did it.”

If you want to see just how competitive the two actresses can be with each other, you need only watch them arm wrestle!
