The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos: “big and explosive”

In a Radio Times interview, Mandip Gill had plenty of praise for the tenth episode of Doctor WhoSeries 11, The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos, written by Chris Chibnall and directed by Jamie Childs.

“It’s a real team effort, showcasing the whole ensemble. I think people are really going to enjoy it.”

Not only does she deem the episode “big and explosive” but Gill also praises the guest stars.

“It’s big and explosive. I’ve worked with Phyllis [Logan] before on Good Karma Hospital, so it’s been really nice. And obviously [Mark Addy is] a brilliant actor. We’re so fortunate that every couple of weeks our guest actors change, and you have four new friends.”

The four new friends Gill refers to are Phyllis Logan as Andinio, Mark Addy as Paltraki, Percelle Ascott as Delph and Jan Le as Umsang.

THE BRIGADIER AND HIS DAUGHTER REUNITE!

THE BRIGADIER AND HIS DAUGHTER REUNITE!

Candy Jar Books is pleased to announce a very special book for 2019, the first of its standalone Lethbridge-Stewart novels. Downtime: Children of the New World by Andy Frankham-Allen.

In co-ordination with Reeltime Pictures, Downtime: Children of the New World is a sequel to their straight-to-video film, Downtime, which introduced the Doctor Who world to the Brigadier’s daughter, Kate Lethbridge-Stewart. Both are reunited in this new novel, appearing together in a full novel for the first time in over twenty years!

Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, as played by Jemma Redgrave, became a semi-regular feature in Doctor Who following her appearance in 2012’s The Power of Three by current-series showrunner, Chris Chibnall. She continued to appear throughout Peter Capaldi’s time as the Doctor, and currently enjoys her own series of UNIT adventures with Big Finish. But she first appeared in Downtime in 1995, played by Beverley Cressman, which was produced under licence from Mervyn Haisman by Reeltime Pictures Ltd, and was written by Marc Platt. Kate went on to make a few minor cameo appearances in Doctor Who novels and short stories through the remainder of the 1990s. Cressman returned to the role in 2003 for another Reeltime Pictures straight-to-video film, Dæmos Rising. Downtime: Children of the New World will be her first starring role in a novel since Marc Platt’s own novelisation of Downtime in 1995.

It’s not only Kate who is returning. Downtime: Children of the New World also features the return of her son, Gordy, who was first introduced in Downtime. Along for the adventure are other alumni from both Downtime and Dæmos Rising, including ex-UNIT captain, Douglas Cavendish. Picking up the story nine years after the defeat of the Great Intelligence in Downtime, Kate, Gordy and the Brigadier will be joined by further members of the Brigadier’s family, including his eldest grandson Conall Wilson, who first appeared in Candy Jar’s Lethbridge-Stewart series.

Range Editor Andy Frankham-Allen, and author of the book, explains how it came to pass:

“When I first heard of Reeltime’s forthcoming film, Anomaly, which would see Beverley returning to the role of Kate, I contacted Keith Barnfather. Initially it was simply to express my interest in Kate’s return, and how I’d be open to us working together to cross-pollinate our two ranges. Keith was very open to the idea, and before we knew it the conversation turned to prose and the idea of doing a sequel to Downtime. It took a while to work out when to set it, and after watching Dæmos Rising it became clear the book needed to be set after that film. The only proviso Keith gave me was that I needed to “set up” Anomaly.”

Set in September 2004, Downtime: Children of the New World picks up the story told in Downtime, which saw the Brigadier and his daughter join forces with Doctor Who companions Sarah Jane Smith and Victoria Waterfield to defeat the Great Intelligence’s plan of world domination through New World University. Although a sequel, the novel is intentionally written to stand on its own.

Andy explains:

“All background details from Downtime will be treated the same way one treats background detail in a normal standalone novel; the reader will be told everything they need to know for the story to work. Of course, further insight can be gained by picking up Downtime, but it won’t be essential. Children of the New World is its own story. The basic idea came to me fairly quickly, but it wasn’t until I rewatched both films and had a chance to look through Marc Platt’s novelisation that the main plot point presented itself. I was determined to write a solid standalone tale, but one that was a logical continuation of Downtime, while at the same time bringing Kate and Gordy fully into the fold with the Brigadier’s extended family. The chance of having the Brigadier’s two grandsons together was too good to pass up, and that quickly became the crux of the plot.”

The striking cover art is by popular Doctor Who artist Adrian Salmon, who has done work for Doctor Who Magazine, Big Finish, the Doctor Who animated DVDs, and Candy Jar previously. He says: “Great to be asked to draw a cover for the new look Lethbridge-Stewart range! Andy and I had a lot of fun with this cover; as soon as he told me what the book was like, I knew the kind of thing I wanted to do. He gave me an open brief to redesign the Yeti, to make it more of a simian creature, and less like the way they’re previous been depicted in Doctor Who. I wanted to incorporate silver into the design, initially as a kind of harness, before we settled on a fearsome face mask, to suggest the controlling intelligence and to make it clear these are not the Yeti fans have previously seen.”

Blurb:

Kate Lethbridge-Stewart joins her father, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, in a mission to save her son’s life!

For the last nine years Kate’s life has been a happy one. Other than a minor blip in 2003, she hasn’t had to worry about aliens bothering her or her son. Indeed, her biggest concern is Gordy’s first girlfriend. But it all changes when a face from her past appears, bringing with him a warning.

Gordy and his cousin Conall are kidnapped by a radical group calling themselves the Followers of Maitreya!

The Brigadier and Kate join forces with Douglas Cavendish and Anne Travers on a mission to save Gordy and Conall, which leads them to the ruins of Det-Sen Monastery in Tibet where deadly Yeti roam, and a prophecy is about to fulfilled!

What connects the Followers of Maitreya to a developing online school, Asteroid 4179 which is heading towards Earth, and the Brigadier’s family?

Billie Piper reprises role as Rose Tyler in new audio series from Big Finish

Billie Piper reprises role as Rose Tyler in new audio series from Big Finish

Billie Piper is returning to the Doctor Who universe in Rose Tyler: The Dimension Cannon, a new audio series from Big Finish coming September 2019. It follows Rose’s journey through dying parallel worlds, and also stars Camille Coduri as Rose’s mum Jackie, Shaun Dingwall as her dad Pete, Mark Benton as alien investigator Clive Finch and Elli Garnett as Caroline Finch. The four episodes follow Rose’s mission to seek out the Doctor, the only person who can save the doomed multiverse…

The four new adventures are:

  • 1.1 The Endless Night by Jonathan Morris
  • 1.2 The Flood by Lisa McMullin
  • 1.3 Ghost Machines by AK Benedict
  • 1.4 The Last Party on Earth by Matt Fitton

Billie Piper commented:

‘I love how normal Rose is, and yet really extraordinary… She lived a normal average life but she is incredibly curious and has an enormous capacity for love and empathy and is really spirited. She is extraordinary.”

Producer David Richardson spoke about former showrunner Russell T Davies’ involvement in the creation of the audio spin-off:

“I approached Russell T Davies with the idea of Big Finish making a Rose Tyler spin-off. He was very enthusiastic – as always – and suggested we followed Rose’s journey that ultimately leads to her finding the Doctor in The Stolen Earth. I found the proposal irresistible, and instantly script editor Matt Fitton and I were throwing around ideas. There is a whole multiverse of possibilities. Russell suggested including Jackie and Pete, and embraced my idea of including a parallel universe version of Clive – who of course was killed off in the TV series (in the 2005 episode Rose).

Russell guided us gently through the development – steering us towards ideas that worked brilliantly, ensuring things that needed improvement were fixed, and also throwing out the ideas that didn’t work. I’m absolutely delighted with what we have – a family drama about the end of worlds. It’s about love and loss and things that might have been – and our brilliant cast have embraced the emotional scripts.”

According to Big Finish, there are no alien threats or villains to defeat but the stories will capture and showcase the beautifully rich human characters of Doctor Who:

“What we have is different to previous iterations,’ says David. ‘It’s rather dark (though never short on wit and charm) but it’s not really about villains. It focuses on the fight to survive against the odds, and on the power of family and love.”

“That’s the great thing about Doctor Who,’ says Billie. ’It challenges new-thinking. It’s progressive and it can be political in amongst these human emotions and relationships. I think that’s its greatest appeal.”

Rose Tyler: The Dimension Cannon will be released in September 2019. Visit Big Finish for more information and pricing.

BBC’s festive TV line-up announced

The BBC have announced a mighty assembly of shows for its festive season, including Doctor WhoCall the MidwifeLuther and Les Misérables

As always there will be a festive – and yup, murderous – edition of EastEnders as the truth about Alfie and Hayley has catastrophic consequences for everyone involved. Additionally, there’ll be a big Christmas show for Michael McIntyre called, uh, Michael McIntyre’s Big Christmas Show as well as a couple of Yuletide episodes of Mrs Brown’s Boys.

In terms of drama we’ve got mega Victor Hugo adaptation, Les Misérables, starring Dominic West, David Oyelowo, Lily Collins, Olivia Colman and more. Watership Down will be turned into a two part feature-length occasion, directed by Noam Murro and featuring the vocal talents of James McAvoy, Jon Boyega, Peter Capaldi, Daniel Kaluuya, Rory Kinnear, Craig Parkinson, Mackenzie Crook, Anne-Marie Duff, Taron Egerton, Jason Watkins, Ben Kingsley, Tom Wilkinson, Rosamund Pike, and Gemma Chan to boot.

Mark Gatiss brought M.R. James’ The Tractate Middoth to life a few years back and this Christmas he’s written and directed his own spooky tale. The Dead Room follows Simon Callow as Aubrey Judd, the radio series’ veteran presenter and national treasure, who finds that he must adapt to changing times and tastes… But whatever happened to the classic ghost stories? The good old days? Aubrey soon discovers that all is not quiet in the eerie radio studio – and that elements of his own past are not as dead and buried as he perhaps hoped. Starring alongside Callow is Anjli Mohindra, Susan Penhaligon and Joshua Oakes-Rogers.

As the Doctor, Ryan, Graham and Yaz return home, will they be able to overcome the threat to planet Earth?

She’s even got a lovely new scarf for the occasion…

Another hotly anticipated show is the return of Luther with not-James Bond Idris Elba returning to the role. The synopsis goes a bit like this…

When the moonless shadows of London give birth to a new nightmare, DCI John Luther played by Idris Elba is once more called to immerse himself in the deepest depths of human depravity.

While the monstrous and seemingly indiscriminate killings become ever more audacious and public, Luther and new recruit D.S. Catherine Halliday played by Wunmi Mosaku are confounded by a complex tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an untouchable corruption. But even as the case brings him closer than ever to the true face of evil, a reluctant Luther is forced to confront the unburied demons of his own recent past. Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect and who to sacrifice.

Whatever his next move, it will have devastating consequences for those around him — and change John Luther forever.

The Doctor and her companions are set for a Norwegian nightmare in the trailer for episode 9

The Doctor and her companions are set for a Norwegian nightmare in the trailer for episode 9

The Doctor and her companions look set for a Norwegian nightmare in next week’s episode of Doctor Who, intriguingly titled ‘It Takes You Away’.

Written by Ed Hime (Skins) and directed by Jamie Childs (‘The Woman Who Fell to Earth’, ‘Demons of the Punjab’), the episode will see The Doctor, Ryan, Graham and Yaz materialise in the Scandinavian country, where they come across a boarded-up cottage and a girl named Hanne who is in need of their help.

The trailer really doesn’t give away much, but you can probably be confident there’s some sort of alien or monster lurking in the woods around the cottage.

The teaser sees our heroes arrive at “a cottage in Norway in winter with a chimney but no smoke”, with a terrified Hanne repeatedly saying, “it takes you away”. Probably not an ideal holiday location, then.

The guest cast in Doctor Who‘s take on Nordic Noir includes Kevin Eldon (as Ribbons), Ellie Wallwork (as Hanne), Christian Rubeck (as Erik) and Lisa Stokke (as Trine).

Here’s the official synopsis: “On the edge of a Norwegian fjord, in the present day, The Doctor, Ryan, Graham and Yaz discover a boarded-up cottage and a girl named Hanne in need of their help.

“What has happened here? What monster lurks in the woods around the cottage – and beyond?”

Doctor Who episode 9 ‘It Takes You Away’ airs on Sunday, December 2 on BBC One.
