Doctor Who screenwriter, author to speak at Festival of Ideas

Doctor Who screenwriter, author to speak at Festival of Ideas

Doctor Who Series 11 screenwriter and author Malorie Blackman and Doctor Who author Juno Dawson are scheduled to join a moderated discussion on taboo topics in Young Adult fiction on Saturday, September 15.

The Royal Academy of Arts is hosting the talk as part of its Festival of Ideas.

Malorie Blackman has written over 60 books for children and young adults, including the Noughts and Crosses series, the novel Thief! and was recently announced as writing one episode of Doctor Who Series 11. Blackman also recently contributed to Doctor Who: Thirteen Doctors 13 Stories, an anthology of short stories featuring each Doctor.

Juno Dawson wrote Spot the Difference, The Gender Games and the best-selling non-fiction guide for young LGBT people This Book is Gay. Dawson has also recently penned thirteenth Doctor spin-off novel Doctor Who: The Good Doctor, to be released on October 25.

One might wonder whether Malorie Blackman might give some information on the Doctor Who episode she wrote, which she described as “heartfelt, thought-provoking, timely” in Doctor Who Magazine. Juno Dawson is certainly curious.

Nevertheless, it should be an interesting talk and give some insight into the types of topics that inform their writing. The Festival of Ideas is a ten-day seminar held in London by the Royal Academy of Arts.

Christopher Eccleston to pen memoir

Christopher Eccleston to pen memoir

Simon & Schuster UK will publish Christopher Eccleston’s memoir, I Love the Bones of You, charting his acting career plus the impact on him and his family of his late father’s struggle with dementia.

The book will explore Eccleston’s life growing up in working-class Salford, his deep-rooted desire to perform on stage, and what developed into an acting career that has included his film debut in Let Him Have It to the BBC’s landmark drama mini-series Our Friends in the North and the Doctor Who television relaunch.

The name of the book comes from a quote from his father, who was in the early stages of dementia, a “sweet spot” where there was a loss of inhibition sufficient to allow Eccleston’s normally reserved father to be able to demonstrably express love for him.

I Love the Bones of You is due to be published in September 2019.

The Thirteenth Doctor Comics: new images released

The Thirteenth Doctor Comics: new images released

Titan Comics has released a preview of Doctor Who: The Thirteenth Doctor No. 0, subtitled The Many Lives of Doctor Who via the Hollywood Reporter.

One of the images shows the thirteenth Doctor, newly regenerated in the TARDIS, with a continuation of the twelfth Doctor’s speech from Twice Upon a Time.

“People are going to call you Thirteen, the thirteenth Doctor. You’re not. But that’s what they’ll call you. Those in the know.”

“Of course thirteen used to be the end, the limit, didn’t it? How times change…”

The issue acts as a prelude to not only Series 11 of Doctor Who, but also Titan’s thirteenth Doctor comic book series, which officially begins in October with an all-female creative team of Jody Houser, Rachel Stott and Enrica Angiolini.

Doctor Who: The Thirteenth Doctor No. 0 will be released in comic book stores and digitally on September 26.

Penguin Books has also provided a plot synopsis:

“The Doctor has never faced a challenge quite like this . . .

In the coldest spot in the universe is the Galactic Seed Vault. For generations it has existed to store and preserve examples of plant seeds from across the galaxy, ensuring that in the event of planetary catastrophe, the seeds will survive.

And at its heart lies a secret. Vault 13.

Unopened for millions of years, no one is sure what it contains. There are rumours of a great treasure, and a terrible weapon.

Now the Doctor and her companions are in a race with an ancient order known as the Gardeners of Tellus to unlock the vault. Whoever gains access first will discover the horrifying secret of the Genesis Seed. ”

The Secret in Vault 13 by David Solomons will be released November 1 and is available for preorder from many merchandisers.
