Doctor Who series 11: concept artist teases “crazy” vision for new TARDIS

Doctor Who series 11: concept artist teases “crazy” vision for new TARDIS

Peter Capaldi’s TARDIS was dismantled after his Doctor regenerated, and now we seem to have confirmation that “crazy” plans are afoot for Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor to have her own redecorated version.

Showrunner Chris Chibnall has been tight-lipped about whether the TARDIS will be getting a complete overhaul, and the iconic police box was notable in its absence from the Doctor Who series 11 trailer.

But now, we’ve had our biggest clue yet that something funky and new will be materialising on our screens in series 11. This news comes from concept artist Darren Fereday, who tagged production designer Arwel Wyn Jones in the following Tweet:

https://twitter.com/DarrenFereday/status/1026408599101349888

Arwel Wyn Jones responded by reminding Fereday – with a winking emoji – that they aren’t meant to be talking about this:

When a fan said “there can’t be something even cooler to do” with the TARDIS, compared to the previous designs, Fereday played it coy and unleashed a few winking emojis of his own:

We can’t wait to see what Arwel Wyn Jones’ crazy vision, which Darren Fereday helped realise, ends up looking like on screen. With any luck, there will be a big unveil between now and Doctor Who series 11’s premiere in October.

We’ll keep you posted as we hear more.

William Hartnell Heritage Plaque

William Hartnell Heritage Plaque

Image result for william hartnell

The Doctor Who Appreciation Society has secured an agreement for a blue heritage plaque honouring William Hartnell to be placed at Ealing Studios in West London. William Hartnell was a respected film and television actor and often worked at Ealing

Before the plaque can be made DWAS needs to raise the funds to do so. In the past, fans have been very generous in their support for the Society’s heritage plaques for Verity Lambert at Riverside Studios in 2014 (due to reopen in 2019) and for Jon Pertwee at New Wimbledon Theatre in 2016. It is hope that fans will again come together to honour William Hartnell in the same way. In the coming weeks DWAS will announce a number of ways that people can join in – they plan that everyone who wants to take part in the fundraising will be able to do so without the need to part with large sums of cash.

Finally, every fan who helps DWAS raise funds will be able to enter a competition to win tickets to the unveiling which will take place in the company of friends, colleagues and family.

More news as we get it – “stay tuned”!

Doctor Who series 11 cast confirm secretive South Africa filming

Doctor Who series 11 cast confirm secretive South Africa filming

It’s fair to say that the filming of Jodie Whittaker’s first Doctor Who series has been kept under wraps, with the BBC working hard to stop any series 11 leaks or photos appearing that might spoil the upcoming adventures for the Thirteenth Doctor and her team.

However, as we get closer to the series 11 air date this autumn, more and more information is being released – and that includes some new details about the filming, with the Doctor Who cast finally confirming the long-running rumours about them shooting in South Africa.

Describing the experience as “absolutely amazing,” Jodie Whittaker explained that it wasn’t her first time shooting in South Africa, though it was probably the most ambitious.

“I played a British backpacker in a film called White Wedding,” she told Doctor Who Magazine.

“It was shot over 18 days. We started in the middle and drove to Cape Town, basically stopping and shooting. It was incredible. But I only spent about two days in Cape Town, whereas the Doctor Who shoot was three weeks.”

“It was warm, so that was good,” she continued.

“The ambition was huge and the landscapes there – you couldn’t have got that here. But it required a lot of focus because we knew we had a lot to do in three weeks.

“We were working with a really great South African crew. They recommended things for us to do on our days off!”

“They were in the middle of a drought,” her co-star Tosin Cole added, also noting that they “had to have two-minute showers” to preserve water supplies.

“But other than the water crisis, we had a really good time out there.”

The interview with Whittaker also confirms that the above picture is from the episode filmed in South Africa, which based on the companions’ outfits matches up with trailer footage of the Tardis team (see main image) facing new threats in mid-20th century America (rumoured to involve the civil rights movement and Rosa Parks).

And hey – if nothing else, it was a good chance for the new TARDIS crew to pick up some rays.

Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor in Doctor Who (BBC, HF)

Remember those days when we struggled for the barest hint of any news about Doctor Who? Hoped against hope for the sliver of a quote from Jodie Whittaker about the new series? Dreamed at the prospect of an out-of-focus, blurry shot of the Thirteenth Doctor?

Truly, it was a different time – because in recent weeks the BBC sci-fi series has been bombarding us with new information, clips and hints about the new episodes, from fancy magazine covers, images and trailers to high-profile panel appearances from the cast and crew.

And now the BBC has released ANOTHER image of Jodie Whittaker’s new Doctor in action, which sees the Time Lord standing astride a cliff, sonic screwdriver in hand, as she looks thoughtfully back at the camera.

Notably, this is one of the first shots we’ve seen of Whittaker with her new screwdriver “in action” – as in, not in specially-made production art – and was possibly taken during rumoured filming in Spain earlier this year.

It’s also an interesting mirror of the very first shot we saw of Whittaker in costume – standing on a seaside cliff in front of the new TARDIS– although it’s unclear whether it’s a still from the new series, or a shot taken when the cameras weren’t rolling.

To sum up, there’s not LOADS that this image can tell us. But frankly, even though we’re now a bit spoilt for choice when it comes to Doctor Who series 11 material, we still can’t help but get pretty excited every time a new image, interview or trailer drops.

In other words, keep them coming, lads – we’ve got room for plenty more.
