Colin Baker, the man who played Doctor Who’s sixth and most colourful Doctor, is an absolute sweetie.

The evidence? Take the message he wrote on the fan art presented by Ingrid Oliver, who played Osgood (and her Zygon duplicate) in the BBC sci-fi show. Showing the made-up photo of herself standing by Colin’s Doctor on Twitter, Oliver revealed his autograph alongside the message: “For Ingrid, the companion I wish I’d had”.

https://twitter.com/ingridoliver100/status/1030059540954406912

An amazing moment for Oliver, but probably a terrible one for Nicola Bryant and Bonnie Langford, who played Sixth Doctor companions Peri and Mel, respectively.

However, fans love the idea of Osgood and the Sixth Doctor pairing up and now want the characters to join forces in a new Big Finish audio adventure.

It’s unclear at the moment if Osgood will return to Dr Who, with the character appearing only in name during 2016 Christmas Special The Return of Doctor Mysterio. But it’s not too likely: the scientist was a character created by former Who boss Steven Moffat, who’s now been replaced by Chris Chibnall. And as it seems like the new head of Who wants to establish a new era of in the show – with a new TARDIS, sonic screwdriver, companions and, of course, Doctor in Jodie Whittaker – don’t expect him to tread on past ground too heavily.

So, for the moment at least, it looks like Osgood won’t be materialising to our screens.

Channel to premiere on 26th October with BAFTA award winning Broken starring Sean Bean and will be the home of the all new series of Doctor Who.

BBC Studios announced today that BBC First, the premium British drama brand from BBC Studios’ portfolio, is to launch as linear channel in Poland on 26th October 2018. The channel, which will be available with full English and Polish subtitles, will replace BBC HD and will be accessible through DTH, cable and IPTV providers alongside BBC Brit, BBC Earth, BBC Lifestyle, CBeebies and BBC World News. The introduction of BBC First will see the full BBC channel portfolio offered to viewers in Poland for the first time.

BBC First, which is also available in Australia, South Africa, Benelux and the Middle East, will now become the destination for Polish audiences seeking original, innovative and premium British drama. With award-winning talent in front of and behind the camera, the channel gives audiences the chance to see unforgettable stories that challenge, immerse and entertain. The finest writers, directors and actors, complex characters, suspense-filled thrillers, stunning design and photography will now be available in one place.

The channel launches with a raft of critically acclaimed series including the territory premiere of BAFTA-award-winning Broken starring Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) as a Catholic priest haunted by his past in a tale of redemption, compassion and forgiveness.

Other programming highlights include Unforgotten, a compelling, BAFTA-nominated crime drama starring Nicola Walker (River, Collateral) as a police detective uncovering long buried secrets while looking for justice for the victim of a cold case.

A territory premiere of three-part psychological thriller Paula will have audiences gripped from start to finish. The drama tells a heart-pounding story of a self-destructive schoolteacher whose one-night stand sends her life spiralling out of control.

The specially chosen launch schedule also includes mini-series In Plain Sight based on the true story of the quest to bring a notorious serial killer and rapist who terrorised Great Britain in the 1950’s to justice. Jacek Koskowski, General Manager and Vice President for Poland, BBC Studios commented: “We’re living through a golden era of British drama with outstanding talent producing some of the very best television in the world. Increasing the drama hours on BBC HD was integral to that channel’s recent growth and now we are going further by bringing viewers even more of what they want. Coupled with the addition of Polish and English subtitles for the first time, I’m delighted to be introducing a dedicated premium drama channel to Poland.

The line-up of the rebranded channel will see the biggest premiering titles sit along new seasons of audiences’ favourite light crime series such as Father Brown and Death in Paradise, as well as more family skewed entertainment like The Durrells, Our Zoo and Sinbad. All programming will be available with Polish and English subtitles from the start.

The BBC is now asking Twitter to help track down who leaked Doctor Who series 11 materials

The BBC is now asking Twitter to help track down who leaked Doctor Who series 11 materials

Earlier this summer, the first footage from Doctor Who series 11 made its way – briefly – online, ahead of the planned official release of it at last month’s San Diego Comic-Con.

The BBC, naturally enough, wasn’t best pleased about this, and has now taken its investigation into what happened to Twitter. Specifically, it’s apparently filed a subpoena against Twitter and Microsoft in the US District Court, in order to reveal “all information that may identify the alleged infringer”.

With Twitter specifically, the BBC has identified two accounts that it presumably feels are key to its investigation. It’s thus asked Twitter to hand over personal information on the two users concerned.

With regards Microsoft, the BBC has zeroed in on a pair of OneDrive links that presumably contained the leaked footage.

More information as we get it. But the BBC is clearly keen to clamp down on any unauthorised leaks surrounding this year’s Who…

Big Finish Celebrate 20 Years Of A TimeLord!

Big Finish Celebrate 20 Years Of A TimeLord!

Big Finish Productions is delighted to announce its first wave of special releases to celebrate 20 years of Doctor Who audio adventures… Two new box sets of audio adventures are coming out soon from Big Finish Productions in arrangement with BBC Worldwide.

As part of our 20th anniversary celebrations, Big Finish is releasing a number of special titles in 2019 and 2020, each focused on an incarnation of the Time Lord. And now we can unveil the first two titles.

Coming out this November, Sylvester McCoy’s calculating and comic Seventh Doctor returns with two companions from the Virgin Books’ New Adventures of Doctor Who: Yasmin Bannerman plays Roz Forrester and Travis Oliver plays Chris Cwej in Doctor Who – Seventh Doctor: The New Adventures.

The Virgin Books’ New Adventures of Doctor Who took the reigns of Doctor Who after the television series finished after its 26th season back in 1989. The novels took a darker, deeper approach to Doctor Who, using longer storylines and ideas that wouldn’t have made it to the television screen.

This new box set includes four stories:

1. The Trial of a Time Machine by Andy Lane
2. Vanguard by Steve Jordan
3. The Jabari Countdown by Alan Flanagan
4. The Dread of Night by Tim Foley

Producer and director Scott Handcock explains: “As a fan who grew up in the era of the New Adventures novels, I was thrilled when David Richardson offered me the opportunity to tackle a new box set featuring the Seventh Doctor, Roz Forrester and Chris Cwej. The feedback for the Novel Adaptations was fantastic, and getting the chance to tell completely new stories with this TARDIS team has been a joy!

“We’ve tried to make the most of the box set format, so we have four original hour-long stories reuniting the Doctor, Roz and Chris – and, of course, Sylvester, Yasmin and Travis, who struck up such a brilliant rapport on the adaptations. The four new tales tackle very different genres, in very different settings and times, with Chris and Roz creator Andy Lane kicking off the box set with his story, The Trial of a Time Machine. There really is something for everyone!”

The New Adventures will be released in November 2018, available as a CD box set for £23 or on download at £20 from www.bigfinish.com

Two new adventures are also being released for the bohemian Fourth Doctor adapted from the comic strip by Pat Mills and Dave Gibbons that featured in Doctor Who Magazine (when it was Doctor Who Weekly).

Doctor Who: The Comic Strip Adaptations will be released in March 2019 comprising of:

1. Doctor Who and the Iron Legion adapted by Alan Barnes
2. Doctor Who and the Star Beast adapted by Alan Barnes

In these two adventures, we find the Fourth Doctor travelling with his famed elongated technicolour scarf for company. He’ll encounter the Iron Legion, an army of robotic Roman legionnaires, and in Doctor Who and the Star Beast, the Fourth Doctor encounters one of the deadliest and most adorable villains ever – Beep the Meep!

Nicholas Briggs, director of the Fourth Doctor audio adventures, explains: “These Fourth Doctor comic strip adaptations have a whole different feel to them. It’s like they’re from a parallel universe vision of Doctor Who. Tom Baker spotted it straight away, emailing me the moment he’d read The Iron Legion, commenting that this was ‘a bit DIFFERENT’ – actually typing ‘different’ in capitals! But he rose manfully to the challenge and entered into the spirit of it all wonderfully. And that spirit is that they are, essentially, wackier.

“There’s a feeling of ‘we could do anything because there are no budget restrictions’ in the original comic strips, and our adaptor, Alan Barnes, has captured this perfectly. Crazy characters, extravagant action sequences. And Alistair Lock has done a superb job with his sound design and music.

“The Star Beast has a slightly different feel. The alien monster craziness is contrasted sharply with a dash of kitchen sink drama and a touch of Grange Hill, which predated the TV series exploring more domestic settings. It’s interesting how the brilliant comics writer of these strips, Pat Mills, kind of anticipated this. Alan has a great love for Pat’s work, and he was absolutely the right fit to adapt these beautiful, bonkers adventures of an extra-eccentric Fourth Doctor.”

These two epic stories will be released in March 2019 as a 5-disc CD box set for £23 or on download at £20 from www.bigfinish.com.

Or you can get both sets together as a pre-order bundle, at £45 on CD or £40 on download.

And in celebration of the return of Chris and Roz we have some special offers for the next 48 hours on Doctor Who – Novel Adaptations. Get up to 50% off our standard edition releases, or snap up the Limited Edition versions at £25 on CD or £20 on download.

The latest Novel Adaptations, featuring Chris and Roz, are available at a reduced price. Get Cold Fusion at £14.50 on CD or £13 on download, or their origin story Original Sin at £12.50 on CD or £11 on download.  Or you can buy a bundle of Damaged GoodsCold Fusion and Original Sin for just £33 on CD, or £30 for the Download.

These special offers only last until 23:59 UK time 15th August 2018, so don’t miss out!

A NEW BEGINNING FOR LETHBRIDGE-STEWART

A NEW BEGINNING FOR LETHBRIDGE-STEWART

The Laughing Gnome: Scary Monsters

A NEW BEGINNING FOR LETHBRIDGE-STEWART

Candy Jar Books are proud to announce a new chapter in the adventures of Lethbridge-Stewart, Anne Travers, Bill Bishop and the men and women of the Fifth Operational Corps!

Beginning at the end of August 2018, the Lethbridge-Stewart range returns with a six-book series celebrating fifty years of the Brigadier. And with it comes a brand-new look for the range.

The new design was the brain child of head of publishing Shaun Russell and Will Brooks, known for his work on Titan Comics’ Doctor Who range, as well merchandise for the latest series of Doctor Who. Shaun says: “Andy (Frankham-Allen, range editor) and I have been discussing rebranding the books for some time now, and it seemed the anniversary range was the perfect time. New cover design, new logo, and I knew just the man for the job. We had worked with Will previously. His covers for Philip Martin’s Gangsters and Peter George’s Pattern of Death were outstanding, and we knew he would create the right look for us. And he didn’t disappoint!”

The artwork for Scary Monsters is by Lethbridge-Stewart artist Richard Young. He says: “This is my ninth cover for the Lethbridge-Stewart books, but the first one I’ve done as the lead book, so the stakes were raised for this. It’s also the first cover to feature the Brig. I’d been pushing to feature him on a cover for years, and with this being the fiftieth anniversary of the character it felt like the time was right.”

Andy Frankham-Allen explains the umbrella-title, The Laughing Gnome. “We took our cue from Life on Mars and its sequel series, Ashes to Ashes, and opted for another David Bowie title for our very first time travel series of books. But we didn’t want it just be a title – we decided that we’d make the Laughing Gnome an integral part of the story, the catalyst for our heroes’ adventures in time. I don’t wish to give away the conceit of the series, but the basic premise is thus: Sir Alistair is nearing the end of his life and has just buried another old friend. Feeling out of sorts, he is somewhat surprised to find himself in 1981. Some mysterious force has pulled him backwards in time, into his own past, an adventure he has only vague memories of! As the series progresses we discover that both Anne Travers and her husband, and popular series regular, Bill Bishop, have also been dragged through time. But why? What, or who, is behind it?”

The first book in the series, Scary Monsters, is by Simon A Forward, who penned the 2016 Lethbridge-Stewart novel, Blood of Atlantis.

Simon says: “To be asked once to write for the Lethbridge-Stewart range is fortunate. To be asked twice seems like – what are they thinking? Letting me loose to play with these favourite characters again. Madness. Initially, I thought, well okay, but only if the right idea struck. And the next day the right idea struck me. To make life more challenging, this time it was more than merely contributing to a range. For the Brigadier’s big anniversary year, Candy Jar outlined an ambitious arc to frame these adventures.”

Not only is it the first of the series, but if forms something of a sequel to Blood of Atlantis, with the return of popular character Grigoriy Bugayev and Señora Sophia Montilla. But Simon is keen to stress there’s more to it than that: “This is more than your average jaunt down memory lane and it’s about much more than introspection and reflection.
My book sees the Brigadier and friends confronting terrorism in an international thriller that, while rooted in the past – and in the Doctor Who universe – should carry some resonance in the 21st century. And not just for the Brigadier.”

Blurb:

1981: London, a bomb detonates in a London pub and Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart is among the injured. Moscow, a hijacked plane sits on the airport runway and Major Grigoriy Bugayev leads the assault against the six gunmen holding the passengers hostage.

These are the triggers that set the two military men on an international manhunt. Their investigations converge and uncover a group of terrorists whose roots reach back to sinister Cold War experiments, and something that was unearthed in ancient ruins in the New Mexico desert by one Sophia Montilla… and Anne Travers.

Terror is a contagion. It means to spread. And humanity is set on doing everything in its power to help it…

NB: IF YOU HAVE A SUBSCRIPTION THE LAUGHING GNOME SERIES IS COVERED BY THIS.

The Laughing Gnome: Scary Monsters is available for pre-order now for £8.99 (+ p&p). The book is released at the end of August.

BBC asks Microsoft for information that could identify Doctor Who leaker

The BBC has gone to a US court in a bid to track down the source of a Doctor Who leak earlier this year and is asking technology giant Microsoft for information.

Footage from Jodie Whittaker’s upcoming debut as the first female Time Lord in the revered sci-fi franchise was leaked online.

The 53-second clip and two still images of Whittaker were shared in June.

According to legal documents lodged in Washington, the footage was stored and shared on Microsoft-operated file-hosting service OneDrive.

The documents say the BBC, referred to as BBC Worldwide Limited t/a BBC Studios (Distribution), is asking the court to subpoena Microsoft under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

The BBC is looking to “identify an alleged infringer or infringers” of its copyright material, which was taken from episode one of Doctor Who season 11.

It means the corporation is asking Microsoft to hand over any information that could identify the user of the OneDrive account which leaked the footage.

In July, the BBC asked a court in California to force a company based in the state to produce records to identify the leaker. The leaked footage was shared on Tapatalk.

Doctor Who season 11 is set to arrive later this year.

The Fourth Doctor Adventures continue until 2021

The Fourth Doctor Adventures continue until 2021

Tom Baker returned to play the Fourth Doctor in January 2012 in an audio series produced by Big Finish Productions. With seven audio series under his belt and an eighth due for release in 2019, he’s not stopping anytime soon! Another two audio series featuring the enigmatic time-travelling bohemian have been confirmed, out for release in 2020 and 2021. And we also have some old friends to re-acquaint ourselves with…

In series nine of The Fourth Doctor Adventures, Tom Baker’s Doctor is reunited with Time-Lady Romanadvoratrelundar II (Romana to us humans), played by Lalla Ward. And joining them will be Adric, played by Matthew Waterhouse, in his first adventures back with Tom since his regeneration in 1981. John Leeson also reprises K-9, the Doctor’s faithful robo-canine companion.

These stories are set in the beginning of Tom Baker’s last television series as the Doctor, season 18, in between the stories State of Decay and Warrior’s Gate. Trapped in E-Space, a pocket universe next to our own (N-Space), the Doctor acquires a new companion Adric, a 15 year old mathematical genius, who begins to travel with the Doctor and Romana.

So hold on tight for four more adventures in E-Space! Volume 1 of Series 9 of The Fourth Doctor Adventures is out for release in January 2020:

9.1 Purgatory 12 by Marc Platt
9.2 Chase the Night by Jonathan Morris

And Volume 2 of Series 9 follows in February 2020:

9.3 The Planet of Witches by Alan Barnes
9.4 The Quest of the Engineer by Andrew Smith

Matthew Waterhouse reveals what it’s like travelling with the Fourth Doctor again:

“I’ve always found that when recording a Doctor Who on audio, it felt like coming home. I absolutely loved it, and this (new series) is another development of that. I love the idea of E-Space with the Fourth Doctor, Romana, Adric and K9 travelling together.”

David Richardson, producer of The Fourth Doctor Adventures on audio, explains what mystical escapades this TARDIS team will encounter in a universe very different to our own:

“We’re returning to another much-loved era in Season 9, as the E-Space trilogy gets a massive extension on audio and we explore strange and wonderful worlds in another universe with the genius team of the Doctor, Romana, Adric and K-9.

It’s been such fun recreating the tone and high-concept style of that era, as the travellers begin the search for a CVE (Charged Vacuum Emboitment) which can take them (or at least most of them) home.”

Big Finish have also announced that in Series 10 the Fourth Doctor will be reunited with Leela (played by Louise Jameson) in four new double-length adventures. David Richardson explains more:

“For Series 10 it’s a joy to welcome back our friends Louise Jameson and John Leeson to reprise Leela and K9. The stories include a prequel to The Sun Makers, a visit to a doomed world, and a group of time-travelling tourists who make a terrible mistake.”

Series 9 will be released in January and February 2020, with Series 10 following in January and February 2021. Each volume is available as a 4-disc CD box set for £25 or on download at £20 here. Or you can get both sets together in a pre-order bundle for £45 on CD or £40 on download. Each of these stories are also available at an individual download price of £12.99.
