Doctor Who casts Sheridan Smith for brand new audio adventures

Doctor Who casts Sheridan Smith for brand new audio adventures

Paul McGann and Sheridan Smith (Big Finish Productions email, EH)

Doctor Who audio drama producers Big Finish have landed another huge star for its latest series: Sheridan Smith.

Smith is reprising her role as Lucie Miller in four new Doctor Who adventures with Paul McGann – the Eighth Doctor – in a new audio series.

The actress first joined the world of Doctor Who as Lucie in 2007 as part of a Big Finish radio series broadcast on the BBC alongside McGann. She featured in four series until her time-travelling journey came to and end in 2011, when Smith’s character died saving Earth from a Dalek invasion.

Producer Nick Briggs explained however that he was keen to return to the much-loved character, even though he didn’t want to re-write her fate.

“I have always been clear that I wouldn’t reverse the finality of Lucie’s departure,” Briggs said. “That would somehow seem like cheating and would lessen the emotional impact of what we did. So my plan was always to revisit Lucie earlier on in her adventures with the Eighth Doctor. It’s pretty much what we do with every classic companion-and-Doctor pairing, so why not do it with Lucie?”

Briggs also spoke of how natural Smith and McGann’s reunion felt in the studio: “The dynamic between Sheridan and Paul was always brilliant so it was genuinely moving to see the two of them working together again. Sheridan walked straight into her old recording booth without any hesitation and without anyone guiding her to it. It was like she and Paul had been recording together only the day before.

“There was a brief moment, when I observed them through the control room window, having their reunion. I couldn’t hear what they were saying, but I just saw them hold each other’s faces in each other’s hands. Big smiles, heartfelt emotions, and then they were straight into their first scene. A truly magical moment.”

The Further Adventures of Lucie Miller box set, arriving in July 2019, is just one part of a celebration of 20 years of Doctor Who on audio from Big Finish Productions. More adventures for each incarnation of the Time Lord will be revealed next year.

The series can be pre-ordered now on the Big Finish website

Doctor Who series 11: third block filming photos appear online

Doctor Who Series 11 Third Block Director of Photography Tim Palmer has a few filming photos and videos on his blog.

His first blog entry is on March 3 which states:

“It’s an honour to be part of the new Dr Who team with the new Doctor. Thank you to director Sallie Aprahamian, producer Alex Mercer, creator Chris Chibnall and everybody at BBC Wales.”

Sallie Aprahamian is the director of the the third filming block, consisting of Episodes 4 and 6, according to Doctor Who Magazine and various actors’ CVs. She had this to say about her filming block in a Doctor Who Magazine interview:

“The weather was not kind to us on one of the episodes – howling rain storms, snow, lots of mud and bright sunshine, sometimes within minutes of each other. The cast and crew were amazing, working on through with good humour and craft. That’s how Doctor Who magic sometimes has to happen.”

So what is in store for these two episodes? The photos in Palmer’s blog give some clues, as well as some quotes

ARACHNOPHOBICS LOOK AWAY NOW” – ‘DR WHO’ 02/03/18

Below the quote is a photo of McQuoid looking through a glass enclosure holding a tarantula.

“PERISCOPE LENS”– ‘DR WHO’ 02/03/18
My old favourite, the Optex Excellence, comes into its own again for a low angle shot from within a freshly dug grave. Key grip John ‘Robbo’ Robinson on the left and camera operator Mark McQuoid at the camera.”

McQuoid is filming from within a grave-sized depression.

“TUNGSTEN FILL OUTSIDE” – ‘DR WHO’ 02/03/18
It’s hot, it’s heavy and it draws a lot of power but there’s an unquantifiable magic about tungsten light outside. No HMI can match the colour quality and broad punch of a Dino.”

You will see two photos of Jodie Whittaker under this quote, one with a female guest star and one with Mandip Gill.

“LAY FLAT SMOKE” – ‘DR WHO’ 02/03/18
Real SFX are doing an outstanding job laying smoke in the large woodland locations we have been filming in. Hundreds of yards of tube, hidden from the eye, surround each set. Even when the wind picks up there are enough sources spread about to provide even smoke coverage. The results are fantastic, especially when the sun comes out.”

“FLICKER BOX” – 31/03/18
A very elegant and naturalistic way to create a realistic flicker. PKE Lighting made up these boxes. The sparks approve – gaffer Mark ‘Hutcho’ Hutchings in front.”

You can spy a glimpse of the set in this video. It is known some filming in this block occurred both inside and outside Treowen Manor House. There are some more photos of this set on Palmer’s blog. One of them is described.

“VERMEER” – 31/03/18
I’m supposed to light scenes to look like a Vermeer not be in them. Photo courtesy of production designer Arwel Jones.”

“MUDDY PUDDLES” – 31/03/18
Peppa Pig would have been in her element. After a night and day of nonstop rain the sun came through for the final slate.”

There was even some underwater photography.

“COLDER THAN IT LOOKS” – 31/03/18
The water does look inviting but don’t be deceived. The Beast from the East had just blown through and the water temp was 3 degrees C. A very tidy splashbag setup. ”

A start date for Doctor Who series 11 is expected imminently.

Doctor Who production designer Michael Pickwoad dies at 73

Doctor Who production designer Michael Pickwoad dies at 73

Michael Pickwoad, who served as Doctor Who production designer from series 7 through to 10, has passed away at the age of 73. His work on the show, which covered an impressive 71 episodes, will last long in the memory.

Michael Pickwoad’s biggest contribution to the world of Who was surely the complete overhaul of the TARDIS design, which he debuted in Matt Smith’s festive outing, A Christmas Carol. This sleek take on the iconic time machine saw Smith through to the end of his tenure, and housed Peter Capaldi for the entirety of his run as the Time Lord.

As well as working on Doctor Who, Pickwoad also worked on Class, Withnail & I, Rules Of Engagement, Kavanagh QC, Murder Most Horrid and Coupling.

Tom Spilsbury, who edited Doctor Who Magazine throughout Pickwoad’s time with Team TARDIS, has released this statement:

“We often hear about ‘unsung heroes’, and while it would be misleading to say Michael Pickwoad’s genius was completely unsung, his brilliant contributions were a massive part of Doctor Who’s success over the past eight years. His sets were simply extraordinary. A wonderful man.”

Indeed, Doctor Who wouldn’t have been the same over the last few years without Pickwoad’s brilliant design work. He was clearly a man with a great deal of talent, and it was a pleasure to see his work on our screens.

Our thoughts go to Pickwoad’s family at this difficult time.

BBC chief on the new Doctor Who: “gone is the daffiness and idiosyncrasy of her predecessors”

BBC chief on the new Doctor Who: “gone is the daffiness and idiosyncrasy of her predecessors”

Jodie Whittaker - Doctor Who
Jodie Whittaker – Doctor Who 13

Piers Wenger – former executive producer of Doctor Who, and incumbent drama controller for the BBC – has given a rather odd statement about Jodie Whittaker’s take on the Doctor.

Speaking to the Radio Times for an article on the 100 hottest TV talents of year, where Whittaker placed 15th, Wenger shared these thoughts on the new Doctor Who star:

“It’s a testament to the energy and focus that Jodie has brought to Doctor Who that it’s hard to distinguish where one ends and the other begins. She said from the start that she could only do it her way and so it has become.

“Gone is the daffiness and idiosyncrasy of her predecessors in favour of a Doctor with energy, spark and relatability.”

Wenger certainly took an interesting approach to his quote. As much as he did compliment Whittaker’s work in Doctor Who, the Beeb’s head honcho also seemed to throw some shade at the daffier Doctors that have come before.

Chris Chibnall
New Doctor Who Executive Producer; Chris Chibnall

The new Doctor Who showrunner, Chris Chibnall, placed at second on the Radio Times TV 100 list. Charlotte Moore, the BBC’s director of content, offered this far more conservative comment:

“Chris is a wonderfully talented multi-award-winning writer whose catalogue of work speaks for itself. I can’t wait to see his passion and vision for Doctor Who come to life on BBC1 this autumn. As a lifelong fan himself, I know he will bring something very special to the hit series to captivate old and new fans across the globe.

Doctor Who is expected to return “by October“, and we’ll now be watching it with daffiness levels in mind.

Doctor Who announces writers and directors for all new series

Doctor Who announces writers and directors for all new series

The BBC today announces the full list of writers and directors for the new series of Doctor Who, launching this autumn on BBC One.

Showrunner Chris Chibnall, says: “We have a team of writers who’ve been working quietly and secretly for a long time now, crafting characters, worlds and stories to excite and move you. A set of directors who stood those scripts up on their feet, bringing those ideas, visuals and emotions into existence with bravura and fun.

“Hailing from a range of backgrounds, tastes and styles, here’s what unites them: they are awesome people as well as brilliant at their job. (It matters!) They love Doctor Who. And they’ve all worked above and beyond the call of duty in an effort to bring audiences something special, later this year.”

Writers

Former Children’s Laureate Malorie Blackman has written over 60 books for children and young adults including the Noughts and Crosses series of novels, and her book Pig-Heart Boy, which was adapted into a Bafta-winning, six-part TV serial.

Malorie says: “I’ve always loved Doctor Who. Getting the chance to write for this series has definitely been a dream come true.”

Ed Hime was nominated for a Craft Bafta for his first episode of Skins, and won the Prix Italia for his radio play The Incomplete Recorded Works of a Dead Body.

Ed says: “Writing for this series comes down to the adventure really, and telling emotionally engaging stories to bring everyone along with you.”

Playwright and screenwriter Vinay Patel’s television debut, Murdered By My Father, won the 2016 Royal Television Society Award for Best Single Drama and was nominated for three Baftas.

Vinay says: “I grew up watching shows like Star Trek and Quantum Leap on the edge of my dad’s bed, and I loved how they managed to capture the imagination of a kid like me as well as acting as a moral compass. I never imagined that I’d get to write for Doctor Who – I was pretty thrilled.”

Pete McTighe is the originating writer of Wentworth, the female prison drama that has sold to over 150 countries. He’s written over a hundred hours of TV drama and been nominated for five Writers Guild Awards.

Pete says: “My entire television career has quite literally been an elaborate plan to get to write Doctor Who – and no one is more shocked than me that it paid off. I’ve been having the time of my life working with Chris, and writing for Jodie and the new team, and can’t wait for everyone to see what we’ve been up to.”

Joy Wilkinson has been selected as a Screen International Star of Tomorrow and has had two screenplays featured on the Brit List. Her TV scripts include the critically-acclaimed BBC five-parter The Life and Adventures of Nick Nickleby, while her theatre work has won prizes including the Verity Bargate Award.

Joy says: “I loved the show and felt like it might be a good fit for me, but I knew it was really hard to get onto. So quite frankly I’m still pinching myself to be here!”

Directors

Sallie Aprahamian has been directing television for over two decades with critically acclaimed shows including: Extremely Dangerous, The Sins, Real Men, The Lakes, Teachers and This Life.

Sallie’s memories of Doctor Who go right back to the 1960s, when William Hartnell created the role. She says: “I watched the First Doctor from behind the sofa through my fingers, frightened and exhilarated. I was really delighted, as a fan and as a director, to be invited to work on the first female Doctor’s series. What a brilliant time to be on the show!”

Jamie Childs, who directed Jodie Whittaker’s reveal as the Thirteenth Doctor, returns for the opening episode of the new series.

Jamie says Doctor Who represents an important part of our television landscape. “We tend to avoid making many shows in Britain that really allow the audience to properly escape, and Doctor Who has been doing this for decades. So yes, sign me up – I’ve always wanted to be part of that! There really aren’t many shows made over here that allow the viewer to travel to another universe.”

Jennifer Perrott wrote, directed, produced and executive produced her award-winning 35mm short film The Ravens. Since finishing Doctor Who she has been directing Gentleman Jack, a forthcoming BBC One/HBO historical drama series created by Sally Wainwright.

Jennifer says: “Doctor Who is an iconic show and one I’d loved as a child, especially when Tom Baker was the Doctor. Space travel has become more a part of modern life and this has opened the door for more human stories to be told amidst the escapist fantasy of saving the world from alien invasion. The aliens are now as emotionally complex as the humans, and I was really excited by that.”

Mark Tonderai went to school in Zimbabwe and architecture school in Kingston, before landing a job at the BBC as a trainee presenter. Mark has directed the full season of The Five, Impulse, Lucifer, Gotham, Black Lightning, George RR Martin’s Nightflyers and Jennifer Lawrence thriller House at the End of the Street.

Mark says: “What was really crucial in my decision to direct the show was Chris Chibnall. I’m a huge fan of his and I like the way he sees the world. He has this ability to entertain and also deliver truths – questions, too – about who we are. And he does it all with a hint of a smile.”

The new series of Doctor Who begins on BBC One this autumn, made by BBC Studios in Wales.

Next year, Big Finish will put out its biggest Doctor Who release ever, to mark 20 years of its popular range of audio plays.

The cast includes: Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Paul McGann, Sylvester McCoy, Alex Kingston, Sophie Aldred, Katy Manning, Jemma Redgrave, Ingrid Oliver and many more!

The release will see Professor River Song (Kingston) meets her predecessor, another time-travelling archaeologist, Professor Bernice Summerfield (Lisa Bowerman), while Kate Stewart (Redgrave) travels back in time to classic UNIT and meets the Third Doctor (voiced by Tim Treloar) and Jo Grant (Manning).
