THE BRIGADIER: FIFTY YEARS OF LETHBRIDGE-STEWART

THE BRIGADIER: FIFTY YEARS OF LETHBRIDGE-STEWART

Candy Jar Books is pleased to announce the latest addition to their Lethbridge-Stewart range of titles, and the first non-fiction instalment in the character’s expanding universe, The Brigadier: Fifty Years of Lethbridge Stewart.

Since acquiring the rights to the character of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart in 2014, as well as other iconic Doctor Who figures such as the Great Intelligence, Candy Jar has published over twenty works of fiction in the Lethbridge-Stewart series, with more titles already in the works. Given the enthusiastic response of Doctor Who fans the world over, it would be fair to say that the series has met a long unfulfilled demand.

Head of Publishing, Shaun Russell, says: “The Brig is one of Doctor Who’s most beloved characters, yet over the years, he became increasingly sidelined in the Doctor Who universe. We thought the character had a lot of untapped potential, so we took a punt and started exploring his origins, with the aim of telling the story of what he was up to in the years between his introduction to Who in The Web of Fear, and the formation of UNIT in The Invasion. From the feedback we’ve received from the fans, it seems this was a story they were waiting to be told.”

But as all fans of Doctor Who know, the story is just the start of the appeal; the legions of fan forums, Meet-up Groups, or a brief glance at social media in the wake of new episodes, attest to the fact that unpicking storylines – why did this character do that? What are the implications of this? How does X relate to Y? – is half the fun.

Andy Frankham-Allen, range editor of the Lethbridge-Stewart range, says: “Fan speculation, theories and fiction, is what kept Doctor Who alive in the sixteen years it was off television. And the engagement of the fans is still what makes the series special; Doctor Who isn’t just a show, it’s a community, and it’s a community that loves nothing more than to explore the Doctor Who universe together. We take our role as the custodians of the Brigadier seriously; that’s why our stories revel in the continuity of the show. But we thought there was still one thing missing from our range, and that was something exploring just who the Brigadier is. Over the years, and across the TV show, miscellaneous book series, comics, audio dramas, and our own range of titles, he’s got a lot done. We thought a book that collected his continuity into one place, that explored his motivations, his effect on the universe, and his relationship with other pivotal figures, was something that the fans would love. This has never been done, and it’s long overdue. But we couldn’t just explore our own range; we had to look at the character as a whole.”

Accordingly one of the centrepieces of the book is a collation of the Brig’s television adventures over the years, establishing the definitive chronology of the character for the first time. Put together by Simon A Forward, a Doctor Who writer for over two decades, the piece takes its place alongside a raft of pieces by established Doctor Who names, not least an exclusive interview with John Levene, who played the Brig’s long-time sidekick John Benton, giving a rare behind the scenes look at the experience of shooting Doctor Who’s golden era.

Other contributors include Darran Jordan, Philip Clarke, and a host of names still to be announced. Between them, they explore topics including the Doctor’s relationship with the Brig (and vice versa), the life of Nicholas Courtney (through thirteen objects of personal significance), as well as tackling the thorny question of whether or not the Brigadier counts as an official companion. With a comprehensive approach encompassing all BBC, Big Finish and Candy Jar media, the book looks set to become the definitive reference for this staple of the Doctor Who universe for years to come.

The Brigadier: Fifty Years of Lethbridge-Stewart is only available to pre-order from Candy Jar.

Footage promoting the next series of the time travel drama will air during the BBC’s half time coverage of the World Cup final.

Even though England are not playing it is still expected to attract viewing figures in excess of 10 million.

Sunday’s footage comes almost exactly a year after Whittaker was revealed to be replacing Peter Capaldi as the Doctor.

She’s the first woman to play the title role in the long running series.

In an interview published this week with US magazine Entertainment Weekly Whittaker said the new series was “hopeful and fizzing with wonder”

On Thursday she and co-stars Cole and Gill will also be appearing at the world’s biggest entertainment event of its kind Comic-Con in San Diego where more details about the series are expected to be revealed.

Earlier this month, BBC Studios which makes the drama took legal action in the US after a short clip of the Whittaker’s first episode was leaked online along with two stills of the actress.

The ten episode new series of Doctor Who will be broadcast on BBC One this autumn.

Torchwood will follow classic Doctor Who and stream on Twitch this month

Torchwood will follow classic Doctor Who and stream on Twitch this month

Following on from the first ever Doctor Who digital broadcasting event kicking off earlier this year, now it’s time for Torchwood to come to Twitch.

For a seven-week period from the end of May, TwitchPresents set about airing over 500 episodes from 26 seasons of the classic series of Doctor Who worldwide and starting this Sunday (July 15), Captain Jack Harkness will be joining in the fun too.

Torchwood originally aired between 2006 and 2011, and all four series of Torchwood will stream on Twitch every Sunday for the next four weeks, airing at 6pm in the UK (10am PDT).

Each of the series will be shown in full, following John Barrowman’s Captain Jack Harkness as the leader of the Torchwood Institute’s Cardiff Branch in the first two series before moving on to the two special event series Children of Earth and Miracle Day.

The full schedule is as follows:

  • July 15 – Torchwood: Series One
  • July 22 – Torchwood: Series Two
  • July 29 – Torchwood: Children of Earth
  • August 5 – Torchwood: Miracle Day

Since the series wrapped up in 2011, the Torchwood story has been continuing in a number of audio plays, and earlier this year Big Finish reunited the full Torchwood team – Captain Jack Harkness, Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Owen Harper and Toshiko Sato – for new play Believe.

Big Finish is also planning an official ‘sixth series’ of Torchwood in a new project that will see John Barrowman reprise his role of Captain Jack for Torchwood God Among Us, a new set of audio plays which pick up where the previous Aliens Among Us left off.

Torchwood: Series 6, Part 1 launches this next set of adventures in October 2018. Part 2 will follow in February 2019, and part 3 will complete the season in June 2019.

And, of course, you can re-live the entire series so far on Twitch from July 15 too.

Jodie Whittaker wants to bring you “hope” with her first series of Doctor Who.

The former Broadchurch star steps into the TARDIS for series 11 to usher in a brand new era as the first-ever female Doctor, having debuted in an explosive final scene in the 2017 Christmas special.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jodie jokes that the dramatic theme of her Doctor’s regeneration will definitely be carrying over into the full series.

“Well, I would say that [the series is] hopeful and fizzing with wonder,” she explained. “I have absolutely shot myself in the foot for any ADR, because I get in there, and realise I speak at a hundred miles an hour. If a plane goes over I’m like, ‘Are you kidding?’

“I’ve got to try and match that speech of ‘Di-didda-di-didda-di-didda’? But essentially I think the big theme is hope!”

Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall described the 13th Doctor as “warm”, “inclusive” and “energetic”, while Jodie’s co-star Mandip Gill — who plays companion Yasmin — compares her performance to another notable Doctor.

“She has a similar energy to Matt Smith’s Doctor,” Gill explained. “Very high energy. Jodie has that about her Doctor.”

Chibnall recently said that there “wasn’t even a question” about picking a female Doctor for his first series as showrunner because “the time was right” for the groundbreaking change.

Doctor Who‘s 11th series will premiere on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US this autumn.

Weeping Angels Doctor Who

While we’re still not completely sure if Jodie Whittaker is getting a Doctor Who Christmas special in 2018, Whovians will definitely still have some exciting festive treats to enjoy thanks to a new short story collection from BBC books.

Called Twelve Angels Weeping (see what they did there?), the book contains 12 short stories written by YA author Dave Rudden (Knights of Borrowed Dark), each featuring one of Doctor Who’s “most famous and frightening” monsters as they face some peculiarly Christmas-themed experiences.

Among the Doctor’s foes getting a Yuletide outing will be the Ood, the Cybermen and (of course), the Daleks, and the book is described in an official release as “perfect for sharing as the wintry nights start drawing in.”

Take a first look at the creepy cover here, then read the official summary below.

Playing on the well-known countdown style of the Twelve Days of Christmas, each self-contained story focuses on a different nemesis in new and imaginative ways, from dark plots to daring heists to the tragedy lurking behind every Cyber-mask.

Perfect for sharing as the wintry nights start drawing in, Twelve Angels Weeping promises to frighten and delight both old and new fans of The Doctor.

“Doctor Who was the show that made me want to be a writer, inspiring and terrifying me in equal measure,” Rudden said of the new project.

Twelve Angels Weeping will be published on 11th October in hardback, and will cost £12.99 – so there’ll be plenty of time if you fancy picking it up for your monster-loving, Doctor Who-obsessed friends and family (as long as they’re over 9 years old – it’s a bit scary) this festive season.

Doctor Who series 11 San Diego Comic-Con panel is earlier than expected

Doctor Who series 11 San Diego Comic-Con panel is earlier than expected

BBC America has officially confirmed details of the upcoming Doctor Who panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con – and it’s not when we were expecting.

We assumed that Doctor Who would take one of the prime panel spots over the weekend of the show. As it happens, though, it’ll be taking place on Thursday July 19th, at 11.45am (US PT time).

As had been previously reported, Jodie Whittaker, Tosin Cole, Mandip Gill, Chris Chibnall and Matt Strevens are all on the panel. And it’s expected that the first trailer, or a chunk of preview footage, will be screened as part of it. Expect that footage to be making its way online shortly afterwards.

By the end of next week, we should be knowing a good chunk more about the brand new Doctor Who

Doctor Who Comic-Con panel details revealed

(BBC/Instagram, JG)

A few weeks ago it was revealed that the upcoming series of Doctor Who would have a pretty significant presence at annual San Diego Comic-con, with the BBC sci-fi series upgrading to a panel in Hall H (the largest venue) to introduce Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor to the world.

And now we finally have some more details about exactly when we can expect to see the panel in action, with BBC America revealing that it’ll take place on Thursday 19th July at 11.45 am local time.

For UK fans this means the panel will kick off at 7.45pm that Thursday evening, which is actually a fairly easy time for us all to be awake for the news! How nice.

Anyway, this scheduling has surprised many fans who expected the panel to take place later over the weekend, perhaps on Saturday or Sunday when the biggest Hall H panels traditionally have their slot, rather than on the very first day of the convention.

Still, we’re not complaining if it means we’ll be seeing the panel (which boasts the presence of Jodie Whittaker alongside companions Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole, writer Chris Chibnall and executive producer Matt Strevens) a few days earlier than expected, especially if it means we get the latest series 11 news (and possible pictures or footage!) sooner.

After all, we’ve got long enough to wait until the series’ autumn airdate. Why make ourselves wait for anything Who-related in between?

Doctor Who’s 2018 Christmas special might have just been confirmed?

Doctor Who’s 2018 Christmas special might have just been confirmed?

The news comes by way of an unofficial leak, with the online CV of television editor Edel McDonnell listing this year’s special as his most recent job.

The credit was originally spotted and posted by @Ruther2 on Twitter.

Doctor Who director Wayne Yip

McDonnell’s page also listed Wayne Yip as director of the special. Yip’s got Doctor Whoprevious, having helmed two series 10 episodes, ‘The Lie of the Land’ and ‘Empress of Mars’.

He also directed two episodes of the spin-off series Class and has worked on PreacherCloak & DaggerMisfits and Utopia.

We did reach out to the BBC, but they’re not officially commenting on the news.

The class of 2018

Filming on the closing episodes of series 11 is reaching its final stages, with this year’s special likely to start filming once Jodie Whittaker and cast return from Comic-Con International in San Diego in late July.

It takes about a month to shoot an hour-long Doctor Who, with previous specials having mostly filmed from August to September.

Doctor Who will return to BBC One in the autumn with 10 new episodes – with, it seems, an 11th to follow at Christmas.
