Doctor Who series 10 enters Emmy race as a TV movie

Doctor Who series 10 enters Emmy race as a TV movie

Doctor Who series 10 is in contention for an Emmy, but the Beeb’s sci-fi show won’t be entering the race as a series. Instead, Doctor Who will be competing in the Best TV Movie category, which is arguably a less hotly-contested field.

The show has been entered into the ballot for consideration from the Emmys academy, with particular focus being put on Twice Upon A Time, the 2017 Christmas special. This episode saw Peter Capaldi’s outgoing Doctor playing opposite David Bradley’s original Doctor, with Jodie Whittaker popping up at the end as the new Doctor.

Sherlock has had some success in years past by deploying the tactic of targetting the Best TV Movie category, so fingers remain crossed that Doctor Who can pick up a gong this time out.

Doctor Who has also submitted for consideration in the following categories: Best Movie/Mini-Series Actor (Peter Capaldi), Best Movie/Mini-Series Actress (Pearl Mackie), Best Movie/Mini-Series Writing (Steven Moffat) and Best Movie/Mini-Series Directing (Rachel Talalay).

On July 12th, we will find out if Doctor Who has been named as one of the nominees by the Emmys’ academy. The awards ceremony itself, where we’ll find out if Doctor Who won, will take place on November 19th, 2018.

We’ll keep you posted as we hear more.

Doctor Who to unveil new Jodie Whittaker secrets at San Diego comic-con

Doctor Who to unveil new Jodie Whittaker secrets at San Diego comic-con

Fans waiting to learn more about Jodie Whittaker’s first Doctor Who series should mark their calendars, because it looks like there could be some revelations about the Thirteenth Doctor next month.

Whittaker will be the star of a panel at San Diego Comic-con this July, where her new incarnation of the Doctor will be introduced to the world alongside other characters and behind-the-scenes figures.

Described as “marking a new era for the legendary Time Lord” and “the cast’s first-ever panel appearance,” the session will also feature new series stars Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole alongside showrunner Chris Chibnall, with executive producer Matt Strevens completing the set.

Notably, Tardis team member Bradley Walsh is not present, which may be due to his filming commitments for ITV gameshow The Chase.

The panel will be hosted by Chris Hardwick, and while there’s no word on when exactly it’ll take place it’s sure to fall within SDCC’s 19th-22nd July runtime.

As for what to expect from the event, well it’s hard to say – we’re crossing our fingers for some Doctor Who preview footage, though it could just be some chat from the cast and crew – but whatever happens, it’s another exciting step on the road to the series’ debut later this year.

BBC to leave iconic Maida Vale studios

BBC to leave iconic Maida Vale studios

BBC Radiophonic Workshop
The BBC Radiophonic Workshop was based at Maida Vale until its closure in 1998

The BBC is to close its iconic Maida Vale Studios, which have played host to generations of pop stars, from The Beatles to Adele.

Director general Tony Hall announced the closure in an email to staff on Tuesday morning, saying the complex would be replaced by a new, state-of-the-art facility in east London.

The move means the BBC will “be able to record and broadcast more live music than ever before,” he added.

It is expected to be ready by 2022.

The BBC hopes to relocate most of Maida Vale’s functions to the Olympic Park in Stratford, alongside other arts organisations including the V&A, Sadler’s Wells and the London College of Fashion.

Built in 1909, Maida Vale Studios was originally the home of the Maida Vale Roller Skating Palace and Club.

In the 1930s, it became home to the BBC Symphony Orchestra, but was also a standby centre for BBC radio news during World War Two.

The orchestra still uses the studios for rehearsals, performances and recordings of classical music – but the complex is perhaps better known for playing host to John Peel’s famous Radio 1 sessions.

The world’s biggest pop stars – from Led Zeppelin to Radiohead and Jay-Z to Little Mix – have all performed there, while artists including The Beatles, David Bowie and The Fall have all released retrospective albums of their BBC performances.

Maida Vale also played host to the BBC’s Radiophonic Workshop, famed for its realisation of the Doctor Who theme tune and incidental music between 1963-1989 while legendary crooner Bing Crosby made his final recording there in 1977, three days before he died of a heart attack on a golf course in Spain.

The studios have been under regular threat of closure – with the BBC announcing in 2007 that the run-down facility, located in a residential area in north London, was “wholly unsuitable for the 21st century”.

However, no viable alternative was found and the studios were given a stay of execution – until today.

“I understand how much our musical heritage at Maida Vale means to us, to artists and to audiences,” said Lord Hall in his note to staff.

“We haven’t taken this decision lightly. But we’re determined to ensure that live music remains at the heart of the BBC and moving to this new development gives us the opportunity to do just that.”

The site will contain recording and rehearsal studios, providing a purpose-built base for the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and the BBC Singers, as well as being used regularly by the BBC Concert Orchestra.

Class now on UK Netflix, Doctor Who series 10 following

Class now on UK Netflix, Doctor Who series 10 following

June 2018 is a good month for Whovians with access to UK Netflix, as both Doctor Who series 10 and the spinoff series Class are coming to the immensely popular streaming service next month.

Class, which ran for 10 episodes on the BBC iPlayer back in 2016, is available right now on Netflix UK in fact. The show focused on the pupils of Coal Hill Academy, with this familiar location from Doctor Who lore playing host to a variety of alien monsters. Class was written by Patrick Ness, and it starred Greg Austin, Fady Elsayed, Sophie Hopkins, Vivian Oparah and Katherine Kelly.

Doctor Who series 10 – which consisted of 12 episodes (including a Christmas special), and originally aired on BBC One in 2017 – will arrive on UK Netflix on June 25th, 2018. This was the last series of Doctor Who with showrunner Steven Moffat and star Peter Capaldi at the helm, with Jodie Whittaker popping up at the end of the Chrimbo special to tease series 11.

All series of Doctor Who since 2005 are now also available on the BBC’s iPlayer service, incidentally.

As always, it’s unclear exactly how long either of these series will stay on Netflix. So, if you’ve been playing to watch/rewatch either Class or Doctor Who series 10, you’ll want to get on it fairly quickly.

In other Doctor Who streaming news,  social video platform Twitch is hosting all of the classic episodes. That started last week too…

Doctor Who returns to BBC iPlayer.

Doctor Who fans excited for the highly-anticipated new series this autumn are in for a treat this summer, as every episode since the 2005 revival will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer from Monday 4 June.

Ahead of Jodie Whittaker taking up the mantle of the Thirteenth Doctor, all ten series will be available to watch as box sets on BBC iPlayer, including every special from the past 13 years of the Doctor’s adventures, including mini-episode The Night Of The Doctor. Whovians can take the TARDIS back to 2005 to enjoy every moment, from Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor first meeting Rose, right up to Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor’s final moments in last Christmas’s Twice Upon A Time.

The series has been one of the BBC’s biggest successes since returning in 2005, and has seen an extraordinary number of big names appear on the show. In addition to Eccleston and Capaldi, David Tennant and Matt Smith both had star-making turns as the Tenth and Eleventh Doctor respectively, and big-name guest stars include Carey Mulligan, Simon Pegg, Derek Jacobi, Kylie Minogue, Andrew Garfield, Felicity Jones and Bill Nighy.

Previous series of Our Girl and The Bridge were recently brought back to BBC iPlayer before the new series aired, providing fans with a chance to remind themselves where things left off and for new viewers to see what all the fuss was about. As well as a busy summer of sport and live events, the returning series of Doctor Who will help to ensure BBC iPlayer is a must-visit destination for viewers this summer.

Dan McGolpin, controller of programming for the BBC, says: “We’re reinventing the BBC for a new generation, and BBC iPlayer is key to that. Bringing back these series of Doctor Who is just part of our offer this summer, giving viewers the chance to uncover or rediscover the Doctor’s previous adventures.
