LETHBRIDGE-STEWART BRAND NEW SHORT STORY

LETHBRIDGE-STEWART BRAND NEW SHORT STORY

Candy Jar Books is pleased to announce its latest free-for-download short story. Piece of Mind by James Middlemitch sees a return to a period of turmoil in the life of Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart, as he is sent to a retreat in Glastonbury.

Blurb:

Following the end of his engagement with Sally Wright, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart is ordered to the Sanctuary by his commanding officer, General Hamilton. The plan is for Lethbridge-Stewart to have “time alone if nothing else. The Sanctuary specialises in mental strength – new techniques, but they take peace and quiet to learn.” Of course, it isn’t only Lethbridge-Stewart that Hamilton sends, but Sally too.

But, naturally enough, the Sanctuary isn’t exactly what it seems and, despite their bruised feelings, Lethbridge-Stewart and Sally find themselves dragged into a new mystery…

Based on characters created and inspired by Mervyn Haisman & Henry Lincoln.

Doctor Who themed comedy show to arrive in Norwich

WHO, ME. is a comedy show with Doctor Who at its heart.

Rob Lloyd, an Australian comedian and actor, will be performing his “hilarious romp” at Norwich Playhouse on July 5 at 8pm.

The show is about Lloyd’s lifelong obsession with the sci-fi hero and spans 54 years of Doctor Who history.

He said: “What I love most about Doctor Who is the freedom of the character. The Doctor can go anywhere through time and space. That was extremely appealing to me when I first got into the show…as a scrawny, nerdy 17-year-old in my first year of university.

“I love that fact that because of doing a show about Doctor Who I can do my version of travelling anywhere with touring.

“This is my first time in Norwich and performing in Norwich. I’m very excited.”

Tickets for WHO, ME. are available to book from Norwich Playhouse box office now. The event is for ages 15+.

DOCTOR WHO STARS WENDY PADBURY, CAROLE ANN FORD AND SOPHIE ALDRED TALK EXCLUSIVELY IN DWM!

Wendy Padbury, who played Second Doctor companion Zoe, recalls how the part she played in Doctor Who was ahead of its time: “She was a strong character for the period. I didn’t quite realise at the time … She thought she was cleverer than the Doctor, brighter. Zoe would never get offended by the Doctor; she knows she’s the brightest and doesn’t see what the problem is. I’ve met two or three people who became astrophysicists because of Zoe, and that’s quite a thing. It’s amazing how the show has that influence. Extraordinary.”

As her character returns for Big Finish’s Class, Sophie Aldred reflects on playing Ace alongside the Seventh Doctor: “I know some Doctor Who assistants weren’t happily served by their characters or by their writers, but I was so well served, at that early age, by everyone around me. I was given a lot of chance for my own input, I was allowed to make my own choices about how to play her, and that was amazing, when I think about being 24 and let loose on one of the most-loved programmes on TV. It gave me a lot of confidence, I think.”

Meanwhile, Carole Ann Ford, who played the First Doctor’s granddaughter Susan, says she would most like to meet… “Jodie Whittaker. I really would like to meet her. Wouldn’t it be fun?! What would I say to her? “Hello grandma!” Jodie’s got a very strong presence. I saw the moment she arrived [in Twice Upon a Time]… The TARDIS is spinning around in space now, but in my time, in the olden days, you could never have the doors of the TARDIS opening in space while it was in flight.

Doctor Who’s iconic theme tune and incidental music will change for Jodie Whittaker’s first series

Doctor Who’s iconic theme tune and incidental music will change for Jodie Whittaker’s first series

(BBC/Instagram, JG)

As we approach the new series of Doctor Who later this year, fans are already excited about all the changes in store. Obviously we’ve already got a new Doctor in Jodie Whittaker, new companions and new writers, but many fans are just as excited to see what Whittaker’s newly-designed TARDIS will have inside, or what the next sonic screwdriver will look like.

And then there’s the iconic series theme tune, which like all those other aspects of the BBC sci-fi series has varied from series to series and from Doctor to Doctor.

Over the years the tune first composed by Ron Grainer and realised by Delia Derbyshire has progressed from its radiophonic roots to full orchestral arrangements, and even since Doctor Who returned to TV in 2005 the theme has been revamped on several occasions, usually to accompany a change in behind-the-scenes management or the casting of a new Doctor.

And so ever since Jodie Whittaker was cast as the first female Doctor last year, fans have been eager to find out whether the music will change again, how it’ll be arranged and who’ll be behind it, with speculation only growing when a short piece of music including parts of the theme (arranged by Matthew Herbert) was released to accompany the new series logo earlier this year.

And happily, today sees some of the fans’ questions about the theme tune answered. You see, the BBC has announced that the series’ new composer (taking over from Murray Gold) will be Segun Akinola, who has worked scoring various documentaries and short films and will now take over the job of writing the music for every episode of Doctor Who’s eleventh series.

And according to a release from the BBC, his duties will also include creating “a fresh take on the legendary theme tune” confirming both that a new version is coming (which isn’t a massive surprise but hey, it’s good to know for sure) and that it’ll probably be fairly different to the most recent version that accompanied Peter Capaldi’s adventures.

As for what the new theme tune will sound like, well, we couldn’t tell you – we’ve included some of Akinola’s other work in this article, which might offer some clues for the musically minded – but we’re it’ll be as big a break from the past as the rest of new showrunner Chris Chibnall’s decisions for series 11.

More Doctor Who lands on Netflix

More Doctor Who lands on Netflix

With lots of Doctor Who now available on BBC iPlayer to download, where it’ll be until the end of the new series in November, Netflix has got in on the act too.

It’s added another episode to its service, the 2016 Christmas special, The Return Of Doctor Mysterio. Helpfully, it’s classified this as a series 10 episode, although it’s more likely to be grouped in series 9 by fans. But that notwithstanding, it’s available on the streaming service to watch now.

Netflix has nine seasons of Doctor Who also available on its service, although as of yet, no classic Doctor Who stories. Given the success that older Who has been enjoying on Twitch, perhaps that might be an opportunity?

Philip Hinchcliffe recalls Tom Baker series that was planned but never filmed

Philip Hinchcliffe recalls Tom Baker series that was planned but never filmed

Former Doctor Who producer Philip Hinchcliffe has revealed some intriguing details about a series of Doctor Who that was planned but never filmed. Hinchcliffe was the boss for Tom Baker’s first three series, but if Hinchcliffe had stuck around for a fourth collaboration with Baker instead of heading off for pastures new, things would have looked very different.

“We did start to plan another season,” Hinchcliffe revealed at a BFI event in London, which Digital Spy reported on. “There was all this musical chairs going on, about whether Bob [Holmes, script editor] and I were going to carry on or not.”

Although the Indiana Jones film franchise hadn’t kicked off yet – this is 1977 we’re talking about – Hinchcliffe recalls tapping into similar ideas for his proposed fourth series for Baker’s Doctor.

“I was ahead of the game,” Hinchcliffe said, before revealing that he wanted “the Doctor [to be] like a colonial explorer, with a pith helmet out in the jungles” in Tom Baker’s fourth series in the role.

“So I was kind of already on the Indiana Jones trail without realising it,” he added. “It was the next thing bubbling up in my head that might somehow take the programme in a slightly different way.

“We started to think of stories like that. In fact, I even wrote one and sent it in after I left the programme, and was told it would be far too expensive, so they couldn’t do it.”

The idea of cutting the Doctor from an Indiana Jones sort of cloth certainly is an intriguing one, and we’d love to slip into a parallel universe for an afternoon to binge the box set of that. Here in our universe, though, Hinchcliffe didn’t stay on and this vision never came to pass. Baker did stick around for four more series, but there wasn’t a pith helmet in sight.
