TARDIS instruction manual goes up for pre-order

TARDIS instruction manual goes up for pre-order

Doctor Who Tardis

Given how many people have struggled to get to grips with controlling the Doctor’s TARDIS on screen – the Doctor included! – the latest Doctor Who book to be revealed might just come in useful.

Replete with new Doctor Who branding comes an official Doctor Who: TARDIS Type Forty Instruction Manual, that’s been penned by Richard Atkinson and Mike Tucker, with illustrations by Gavin Rymill.

The book is set for release on October 18th, with a hardcover asking price of £14.99. There’s a Kindle version coming too, although we’d imagine the book to be quite visual, and thus would benefit from old fashioned pieces of paper.

The synopsis, meanwhile, reads as follows…

All of time and space…where do you want to start?

Governed by Time Lord technology, the TARDIS Type Forty is the most powerful craft in the universe and this comprehensive fully illustrated manual holds the key to its operation.

The appearance of the Doctor’s TARDIS, both inside and out, has changed many times over the years, and this manual features every incarnation – including the latest version for the Thirteenth Doctor. The manual covers the console with fully labelled detailed schematic diagrams for each function, the ship’s famous chameleon circuit, as well as floorplans, specifics of dematerialisation, the use of force fields and tractor beams and much more.

Complete with case studies of the wonder-craft in action, taken from the TARDIS’s many trips through space and time, this manual is an essential guide to the wonders of the Whoniverse.

You can preorder it here.

Doctor Who spin-off Class is being revived by Big Finish

Doctor Who spin-off Class is being revived by Big Finish

As many fans were hoping, the story of Doctor Who spin-off Class is being picked up by the excellent folks over at Big Finish.

Class, created by Patrick Ness, came to an end after one series, leaving things on a cliffhanger too. But the BBC opted not to press ahead with a second series, leaving story threads dangling.

Audio drama specialists Big Finish have now inked a deal, and is working on six new audio adventures for the Class team. These will be spread over two volumes, although it doesn’t look as though Ness himself is involved in them. The cast from the show is returning, though, and Sophie Aldred is set to make an appearance as Ace, too.

The news was broken in the new issue of Doctor Who Magazine, and Class: The Audio Adventures will arrive in August.

Class and Doctor Who series 10 come to UK Netflix in June

Class and Doctor Who series 10 come to UK Netflix in June

June 2018 will be a good month for Whovians with access to UK Netflix, as we’ve just learned that both Doctor Who series 10 and the spinoff series Class are coming to the immensely popular streaming service next month.

Class, which ran for 10 episodes on the BBC iPlayer back in 2016, is coming to Netflix UK on June 3rd, 2018. The show focused on the pupils of Coal Hill Academy, with this familiar location from Doctor Who lore playing host to a variety of alien monsters. Class was written by Patrick Ness, and it starred Greg Austin, Fady Elsayed, Sophie Hopkins, Vivian Oparah and Katherine Kelly.

Doctor Who series 10 – which consisted of 12 episodes (including a Christmas special), and originally aired on BBC One in 2017 – will arrive on UK Netflix on June 25th, 2018. This was the last series of Doctor Who with showrunner Steven Moffat and star Peter Capaldi at the helm, with Jodie Whittaker popping up at the end of the Chrimbo special to tease series 11.

As always, it’s unclear exactly how long either of these series will stay on Netflix. So, if you’ve been playing to watch/rewatch either Class or Doctor Who series 10, you’ll want to get on it fairly quickly.

In other Doctor Who streaming news, we recently learned that the social video platform Twitch is hosting all of the classic episodes with a special event in the near future.

Fans invited to send welcome videos to Jodie Whittaker

Fans invited to send welcome videos to Jodie Whittaker

Doctor Who fans have been invited to send welcome videos to Jodie Whittaker, ahead of her first full series in the show’s lead role. The campaign is being led by BBC America, who are planning to compile the video messages together into one big happy montage to show to Whittaker.

With regards to exactly what they’re after, BBC America released this little paragraph of info:

“We’re looking for videos of you welcoming Jodie to Doctor Who. What that means is entirely up to you. Your message could be as simple as saying, ‘Hello Jodie, welcome to Doctor Who!’ or it could be an explanation of what Doctor Who means to you, how excited you are to meet her, or why you’re a fan of the show. You could bake her a cake, crack open a Christmas cracker, or write something on the sidewalk with chalk. The possibilities are as infinite as the TARDIS!”

If you want to take part, this is what you need to send in:

  • Your full name
  • Your username (for whichever social platform you prefer)
  • A video message that is no longer than 10 seconds, no bigger than 20MB, and as high definition as possible to social@bbcamerica.com (Please do not include background music, though, because the Beeb will add their own.)

Or if you’re not into making videos, you can send anything else that you’d like to welcome Whittaker with to that same email address. Suggestions from the BBC for non-video entries include drawings, graphics, photos, and ‘Anything else you can think of that we couldn’t!”

This sounds like a lovely little project, and a nice way to show Whittaker that the Doctor Who fandom is a happy and welcoming community.

Frazer Hines and Caitlin Blackwood

A short film starring two former Doctor Who companions is to be given its premiere at XpoNorth next month.

Frazer Hines appeared in the TV series playing Jamie McCrimmon, a Highlander from the 18th Century.

Author Diana Gabaldon drew some of her inspiration to set her Outlander books in Scotland after seeing a re-run of a 1960s episode featuring Hines.

Hines appears in the new short drama, Sundown, with Caitlin Blackwood, a cousin of Hollywood star Karen Gillan.

Blackwood appeared in Doctor Who opposite Matt Smith’s Time Lord. She played a young version of Amy Pond, a Doctor Who companion played by Inverness-born Gillan.

After spending her early childhood in Northern Ireland, Blackwood moved with her family to Gillan’s home city.

Sundown was directed and co-written by Bafta-nominated director Ryan Hendrick.

It tells the story of William, played by Hines, a man in his 70s who is taken on “a timeless journey” through the eyes of Blackwood’s Abi to come to terms with his own mortality.

XpoNorth is an annual creative industries festival held in Inverness.

This year it is being held on 27 and 28 June.

Previously…

Earlier this year, we reported that in the US, Tom Baker’s first series in Doctor Who was being released on the Blu-ray format. Given that very little classic Who has made it to Blu-ray, this was notable news. But at the time, there were no plans we knew of to bring the release to the UK.

The set will be available from June 11th 2018, and include a fair wealth of new extra features too. What’s more, the artwork will be the first Doctor Who disc releases to include the brand new Doctor Who branding. Take a look…

David Tennant says Doctor Who’s fan base is “quite scary at first”

David Tennant says Doctor Who’s fan base is “quite scary at first”

Doctor Who‘s David Tennant is heading to The Graham Norton Show tonight (May 18), alongside Solo: A Star Wars Story‘s Emilia Clarke and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Talking about his role in the BBC show, Tennant reveals that the fan base “is quite scary at first”, which figures.

“It’s quite a small club. It does feel like once you’ve been The Doctor, you’re always The Doctor. We do form a small support network,” Tennant tells Norton.

“It’s quite an unusual job and it’s humbling to be at the centre of that. It has such a huge fan base all over the world that it is quite scary at first.”

He also opens up about getting an Emmy for one hour’s voice work on a Star Wars animated film. “I loved doing it but about a year later I got the award in the post,” he said.

“I felt like I should have strived more and it didn’t really feel like I had earned it. It went against my Scottish Presbyterian work ethic just to get one in the post when you didn’t even know you were up for it!”

On being cast in his wife’s new movie – You, Me and Him – he adds: “It went to lots of other actors before it came to me – I thought I would be a shoo-in!”

Elsewhere in the episode, Emilia reveals that Brad Pitt once bid on her as part of a charity auction, while Phoebe admits that she didn’t even know what a droid was before her Star Wars audition.

The Graham Norton Show airs on BBC One tonight (May 18) at 10.35pm.
