Doctor Who: The UNIT Collection

Five classic novelisations of TV adventures featuring the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce, led by Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.

In Doctor Who and the Auton Invasion by Terrance Dicks, the newly regenerated Doctor grapples with murderous waxwork replicas and shop window dummies.

In Doctor Who and the Cave Monsters by Malcolm Hulke, subterranean reptile men wake to find their planet overrun by humans.

In Inferno, a drilling project to penetrate the Earth’s crust has potentially catastrophic consequences.

Doctor Who and the Terror of the Autons finds the Master in league with the Nestenes, whilst in The Three Doctors a crisis for the Time Lords requires the intervention of not one but three incarnations of our hero.

The stories are read by Caroline John (who played companion Liz Shaw), Geoffrey Beevers (The Master) and Katy Manning (Jo Grant).

The Mark of the Rani

By Pip and Jane Baker

En route to Kew Gardens, the Doctor and Peri arrive in Northern England at the time of the Luddite uprisings. Unknown to them, the TARDIS has been dragged of course by the Master, who plans to pervert the course of history and destroy his arch enemy once and for all. But also present is the Rani, another exile from Gallifrey, who is conducting her own evil experiments on the humans of the 19th Century. Soon the Doctor discovers that the female of the species is far, far deadlier than the male…

This is an unabridged reading of the novelisation of the Sixth Doctor adventure by Nicola Bryant, best known for playing companion Peri.

The Second Doctor Who Audio Annual

Take a nostalgic journey through time with these vintage tales from the original Doctor Who Annuals.

Larger than life and twice as colourful, from the 1960s to the 1980s the stories within the Doctor Who Annual were exuberant and charmingly naive. Now, in this second audio volume, Peter Purves (Steven), Anneke Wills (Polly), Geoffrey Beevers (the Master), Matthew Waterhouse (Adric) and Nicola Bryant (Peri) read another selection of these colourful and energetic tales, with atmospheric sound design.

In Peril in Mechanistria, the First Doctor finds primitive humans enslaved to machines in a world of metal. The Second Doctor must rescue Ben in The Sour Note, whilst in Scorched Earth the Third Doctor and Sarah are challenged by a virulent virus on Varium III. The Fourth Doctor has Double Trouble after he and his companions return to UNIT HQ, and then the Fifth Doctor and Adric visit a Planet of Fear. Finally, in The Radio Waves, the Master schemes to turn Londoners against politicians and the Royal Family. Can the Sixth Doctor and Peri stop him?

Also included from 1966 is The Equations of Doctor Who, a vintage essay about the mysteries of the Doctor and his TARDIS.

Series 11 filming is back on location in Cardiff

Series 11 filming is back on location in Cardiff

Production is ongoing on Doctor Who series 11, with the shoot at least three blocks of filming in.

Much of the work has been done within the walls of Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff, as always. What’s surprising though is that despite the extensive location work that’s been undertaken – series 11 has filmed in South Africa, Gosport and Sheffield in the open, amongst other places – so much is still under wraps.

This week, filming has been back in Cardiff, specifically on location gain at Cardiff Bay Barrage, where Jodie Whittaker and Bradley Walsh have been spotted on set.

Filming continues, and as we get more details, we’ll let you know. The show returns to our screens in the autumn

Details of new 13th Doctor books

The BBC’s merchandise arm is set to make the most of Jodie Whittaker’s debut as the Doctor in Doctor Who this autumn, with news of some more books heading our way.

This time, it’s a pair of children’s books that the BBC is releasing, for which the release date for the first has just been announced.

The Secret In Vault 13 is being penned by the brilliant award-winning author David Solomons (author of titles such as My Gym Teacher Is An Alien Overlord). It’s the first in a two book deal for Solomons. The Secret In Vault 13 will be released on November 1st, and will feature the 13th Doctor and her friends in a battle against an old enemy.

The second book in the deal is due out in autumn 2019. No details of that one have been released so far.

Doctor Who (BBC One) – The Thirteenth Doctor is revealed

Jodie Whittaker’s unveiling as the new Doctor Who and the sight of a grieving mother whale in Blue Planet II are among the Bafta nominees for best television moment of 2017.

The six contenders for the Virgin TV Must-See Moment Award at this year’s Baftas have been announced.

All are moments that “truly resonated” with viewers during the past 12 months.

The award is the only Bafta to be chosen by the public, and the winner will be revealed at the Bafta Television Awards on May 13.

The nominated moments are:

Love Island (ITV2) – Stormzy makes a surprise appearance

As Kem, Chris and Marcel rehearsed their rap for the Love Island talent show, the TV screen in the lounge switched over to reveal Stormzy on a live video call.

Game of Thrones (Sky Atlantic) – Viserion is killed by the Night King

A White Walker lieutenant hands a giant ice spear to the Night King. Taking aim, he hurls it skyward, striking Viserion in the throat. Daenerys and Jon both watch as the creature plummets to the earth, crashes into the lake and disappears under the ice.

Doctor Who (BBC One) – The Thirteenth Doctor is revealed

A mysterious hooded figure walks through a wooded glade to the sounds of nature and birdsong. The hood is pulled back to reveal Jodie Whittaker as the thirteenth Doctor.

One Love Manchester (BBC One) – Ariana Grande sings One Last Time

Blue Planet II (BBC One) – Mother pilot whale grieves

A whale was filmed carrying her dead newborn baby around the ocean for days, reluctant to let go. The voiceover from Sir David Attenborough suggested that the calf could have been poisoned by its mother’s milk, contaminated by the flow of plastics and industrial pollution into the ocean.

Line of Duty (BBC One) – Huntley’s narrow escape

DCI Huntley suspects Tim Ifield and turns up at his house at night. A row breaks out and after a scuffle Huntley hits her head on a table and lies unconscious on the floor. Realising Huntley has no pulse, Ifield sets about disposing of the body with a chainsaw.

Members of the public can vote online at virginmedia.com/bafta

The award was launched last year and the winner was the Planet Earth II segment in which racer snakes chased an iguana.

Krishnendu Majumdar, Chair of BAFTA’s Television Committee, said: “The award recognises the most talked about moment on television last year and puts the power of the vote in the hands of the public.”
