Jodie Whittaker has been chatting about filming the show

The brilliant Jodie Whittaker is about to appear on the big screen again in Paddy Considine’s new movie, Journeyman. As such, she’s been doing some interview work to promote the movie. The subject of Doctor Who has come up in the midst of that.

Whittaker is currently filming Doctor Who series 11, of course, and she’s been chatting to the Sunday Times about how things have been going.

“People have been absolutely lovely so far”, she said. “The other week in Cardiff I could see this little lad plucking up the courage to talk to me so I made it easier, ‘you all right, mate?’ So I know it made his morning”, she added, not minding such fan interactions (“I’m actually fine with that”).

She also noted that “people are lovely, but I am very private, which is possible as long as you stick to certain things. I still get the Tube, but I might start wearing a hat”.

In the same interview, Whittaker admitted that she wasn’t a fervent Doctor Who fan growing up, but became much more aware of the show following its revival in 2005. She also admitted that her favourite Doctor is her one-time Broadchurch co-star, David Tennant…!

Michelle Ryan returning for audio drama

Michelle Ryan returning for audio drama

Michelle Ryan is returning to her Doctor Who role for a Big Finish audio drama series. David Tennant will not appear alongside her.

Ryan played a glamorous master thief by the name of Lady Christina de Souza, alongside Tennant’s Doctor, in the 2009 special Planet Of The Dead. At the end of the episode, she evaded the authorities by flying off in a red double-decker bus.

Ryan will now appear in four audio productions, which will pick up where Planet Of The Dead left off: It Takes A Thief by John Dorney, Skin Deep by James Goss, Portrait Of A Lady by Tim Dawson, and Death On The Mile by Donald McLeary.

Ryan herself has said this about the new project:

“Being asked to revisit the role of Lady Christina was a very easy decision. Adventure, a sunny climate and mind-boggling scenarios are included in the scripts, everything I remember of my Doctor Who experience.

“Alas no David Tennant, but there’s a host of new characters to help along the way. I love that we get to see a little more of her heart in the stories, that she does care about the greater good whilst also satisfying her curiosity for life.”

Starring alongside Ryan in these dramas is Luther actor Warren Brown and Who alum Jacqueline King (who is reprising her performance as Donna’s mum, Sylvia Noble).

These Lady Christina de Souza stories are expected to arrive in September 2018.

More as we hear it.

Christopher Eccleston says he “lost faith and trust and belief” in Doctor Who bosses while filming

Christopher Eccleston says he “lost faith and trust and belief” in Doctor Who bosses while filming

The Doctor Dances

After recently claiming he was “blacklisted” by the BBC after leaving Doctor Who, former Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston has now revealed more about the tensions he felt on set during filming for the sci-fi series.

“My relationship with my three immediate superiors – the showrunner, the producer and co-producer – broke down irreparably during the first block of filming and it never recovered,” Eccleston says in the latest issue of Radio Times.

“They lost trust in me, and I lost faith and trust and belief in them,” he continues.

Eccleston starred in the sci-fi series when it first rebooted in 2005 with Russell T Davies as showrunner.

Describing the situation as “very” stressful, Eccleston claims that he felt out of place playing a lighter role, and believes it may have contributed to on-set difficulties.

“Some of my anger about the situation came from my own insecurity,” he says. “They employed somebody [as the Doctor] who was not a natural light comedian.”

He adds, “Billie [Piper], who we know was and is brilliant, was very, very nervous and very, very inexperienced. So, you had that, and then you had me. Very, very experienced, possibly the most experienced on it, but out of my comfort zone.”

In the interview, Eccleston goes on to reveal why he’s only elected to speak on the subject in recent months, with the Salford-born actor suggesting he’d made an agreement not to “damage” the reputation of the series.

“When I left, I gave my word to [then-showrunner] Russell T Davies that I wouldn’t do anything to damage the show,” he says. “But they did things to damage me. I didn’t criticise anybody.”

Asked if Davies was aware of the issues, Eccleston says, “If you’re the showrunner, you know everything. That’s your job,” adding that he “never will have” a working relationship with the screenwriter again.

Eccleston was speaking with Radio Times ahead of the release of his new series, BBC1 drama Come Home.

Doctor Who “almost destroyed my career”, says Christopher Eccleston

Doctor Who “almost destroyed my career”, says Christopher Eccleston

Christopher Eccleston has opened up about his decision to leave Doctor Who after one series back in 2005, and the subsequent ramifications for his career that taking the role had.

In an interview to promote his upcoming appearance as Macbeth in Stratford, that starts at the RSC tomorrow, he candidly revealed that “what happened around Doctor Who almost destroyed my career”.

He went on to explain to The Guardian that “I gave them a hit show and I left with dignity and then they put me on a blacklist. I was carrying my own insecurities as it was something I had never done before and then I was abandoned, vilified in the tabloid press and blacklisted”.

“I was told by my agent at the time ‘the BBC regime is against you. You’re going to have to get out of the country and wait for regime change’”, which is why Eccleston then went off to pursue projects in the US (citing the work ethic instilled in him by his family), before returning in recent times and tackling a bunch of ever-interesting projects.

The full interview is well worth a read, and you can find it here.

David Tennant hints he might return for Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary

David Tennant hints he might return for Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary

We might not have seen the last of the Tenth Doctor just yet. David Tennant, who played the pinstripes-and-Converses Time Lord, has teased that he would return to Doctor Who for its 60th anniversary show in 2023.

While appearing at the Wizard World Cleveland 2018 panel alongside former Who co-star Billie Piper, the former Doctor was asked whether he’d rejoin the sci-fi show for another crossover story. “They are exciting those episodes, but I think you have to be careful not to do them too often. They have to be a novelty. The 50th was a great thing to be a part of,” Tennant replied, before asking, “When’s the 60th? Will we still be upright? Maybe then.”

So, although the 60th anniversary is five and a half years away, it’s at least possible we could see Tennant’s Doctor teaming up again with his future regenerations: Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, Jodie Whittaker, and – unless Whittaker becomes the longest-serving Time Lord of NuWho – the 14th Doctor, too.

Matt Smith has previously said he’d come back to the show if the “timing was right”. And although Capaldi has stated he wouldn’t want to appear on the show again “for a while”, he hasn’t ruled out a return entirely.

Seeing how Tennant came back for the show’s 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor, there’s a good chance his Tardis could materialise again – especially considering the good experience he had on set. “It could have been awful – really awful – because I didn’t really know Matt or Jenna [Coleman] and they could have been proprietorial – ‘get off my land!’,” Luckily they weren’t, they were very fun to be around and we had a really nice time,” Tennant told the Cleveland audience.

“I wanted it to go on a bit longer. It was very short, sweet and lovely and nice to share the load a bit as well. I was thinking ‘oh, I’ve got a morning off today! That didn’t use to happen!”

So, was Tennant merely making a joke about returning or will we see him wielding a sonic screwdriver once again? Only time (about five and a half years’ worth) will tell.

Alan Cumming set to play King James I in Doctor Who

TV and film star Alan Cumming is coming (sorry) to Doctor Who. The actor revealed that he’s set to appear in a future episode of the BBC1 sci-fi series alongside Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor, with the Scottish actor playing a similarly Scottish monarch – James I.

“I’m about to go and do an episode of Doctor Who,” Cumming revealed on Will Young and Chris Sweeney’s podcast Homo Sapiens.

“I’m so excited! I’ve never been in it.”

Asked if he was playing a villain, Cumming replied in the affirmative, adding that he was “like, a nice baddie.

“I’m James I. So I’m kind of like, you know, a kind of dandy, foppy, coward who kind of comes alright in the end. And they said he might come back.”

If true. Cumming’s casting would represent one of the first major casting coups of the new Doctor Who series, which has remained secretive since beginning filming late last year.

And it would also represent the culmination of a long-held ambition for Cumming, who has previously stated that he was approached more than once to play the Doctor him/herself in years past.

Plus, given the character he plays, it seems safe to assume that we might see the Doctor and her Tardis team go on an exciting historical adventure to 17th century England in an upcoming episode, which is exciting information for fans desperate to learn anything about the new series.

And who knows? If Cumming is right, we could see King James return in future episodes for years to come. Assuming he doesn’t get in too much trouble for spilling the beans before then…
